Abstract:Obtaining bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic crystals gives rise to the realization of resonances with high quality factors for lasing and nonlinear applications. For BIC cavities in finite-size photonic crystals, the bulk resonance band turns into discrete modes with different mode profiles and radiation patterns. Here, photonic-crystal BIC cavities encircled by the photonic bandgap of lateral heterostructures are designed. The mirror-like photonic bandgap exhibits strong side leakage suppression to confine the mode profile in the designed cavity. Multiple bulk quantized modes are observed both in simulation and experiment. After exciting the BIC cavity at different positions, different resonance peaks are observed. The physical origin of the dependence between the resonance peak and the illuminating position is explained by analyzing the mode profile distribution and further verified by numerical simulations. Our findings have potential applications regarding the mode selectivity in BIC devices to manipulate the lasing mode in photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers or the radiation pattern in nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Polarization singularities including bound states in the continuum (BICs) and circularly polarized states have provided promising opportunities in the manipulation of light waves. Previous studies show that BICs in photonic crystal slabs are protected by $C_{2}T$ symmetry and hence normally exist on the high-symmetry lines of momentum space. Here, we propose an approach based on graph theory to study these polarization singularities in momentum space, especially in the region off the high-symmetry lines. With a polarization graph, it is demonstrated for the first time that BICs can stably exist off the high-symmetry lines of momentum space for both one-dimensional and two-dimensional photonic crystal slabs. Furthermore, two kinds of interesting processes, including the merging involved with this newly found BICs both on and off the high-symmetry lines, are observed by merely changing the thickness of photonic crystal slab. Our findings provide a new perspective to explore polarization singularities in momentum space and render their further applications in light-matter interaction and light manipulation.

Abstract:A photonic-crystal slab can support bound states in the continuum(BICs)that have infinite lifetimes but are embedded into the continuous spectrum of optical modes in free space.The formation of BICs requires a total internal reflection(TIR)condition at both interfaces between the slab and the free space.Here,we show that the TIR of Bloch waves can be directly obtained based on the generalized Fresnel equations proposed.If each of these Bloch waves picks up a phase with integer multiples of 2π for traveling a round trip,light can be perfectly guided in the slab,namely forming a BIC.A BIC solver with low computational complexity and fast convergence speed is developed,which can also work efficiently at high frequencies beyond the diffraction limit where multiple radiation channels exist.Two examples of multi-channel BICs are shown and their topological nature in momentum space is also revealed.Both can be attributed to the coincidence of the topological charges of far-field radiations from different radiation channels.The concept of the generalized TIR and the TIR-based BIC solver developed offer highly effective approaches for explorations of BICs that could have many potential applications in guided-wave optics and enhanced light-matter interactions.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BIC) have garnered considerable attention recently for their unique capacity to confine electromagnetic waves within an open or non-Hermitian system. Utilizing a variety of light confinement mechanisms, nanostructures can achieve ultra-high quality factors and intense field localization with BIC, offering advantages such as long-living resonance modes, adaptable light control, and enhanced light-matter interactions, paving the way for innovative developments in photonics. This review outlines novel functionality and performance enhancements by synergizing optical BIC with diverse nanostructures, delivering an in-depth analysis of BIC designs in gratings, photonic crystals, waveguides, and metasurfaces. Additionally, we showcase the latest advancements of BIC in 2D material platforms and suggest potential trajectories for future research.

We design a type of bilayer photonic crystal and study the influence of symmetry and coupling between TE and TM polarizations on BICs. Abstract:Abstract Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are localized states despite in a radiation continuum, rendering the ultra-high quality factor for enhanced light–matter interactions and supporting exotic topological properties. So far, most of studied BICs in photonic crystal (PhC) slabs are only vertically localized, i.e. allowing propagations in the plane of slab therein but forbidding radiations, and the density of optical states (DOS) at their frequencies is limited due to the steep dispersion characteristics. Here, we report a BIC existing on a flatband of symmetry-broken PhC slab. The flatband, associated with largely reduced group velocity, significantly sharpens the DOS at the frequency of BIC, which can be realized via finely controlling broken vertical symmetry in the PhC slab. The effect of broken symmetry is revealed in a simple effective Hamiltonian near the second-order Γ point of such system. Our results show the simultaneous engineering of dispersion and leaky characteristics of modes, offering new opportunities to boost light–matter interactions and to enhance the performance of photonic devices.

Abstract:In recent years, bound states in continuum (BICs) have gained significant value for practitioners in both theoretical and applied photonics. This paper focuses on devices that utilize non-homogeneous thin patterned laminae. The properties, design principles, and behavior of BICs for this class of devices are frequently explained through a variety of models, ranging from numerical or semi-analytical solutions for the Maxwell equations to heuristic approaches that rely on fitting functions to provide phenomenological descriptions. The field of devices under study has given less attention to approaches that integrate exact analytical solutions of the transfer matrix with numerical data. In this vein, this paper aims to adopt an approach where exact analytical formulas, detailed in our previous manuscript <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2303.06765" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.06765">arXiv:2303.06765</a> (2023), are translated into equations to explore the origins and properties of the bound states in continuum, as well as their practical implementation. The geometric parameters of the device and its operating frequency band emerge from the null space of the transfer matrix.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are perfectly confined resonances within the radiation continuum. The novel characteristics of single BICs have been studied in great detail in various wave systems, including electromagnetic waves, acoustic waves, water waves, and elastic waves in solids. In practice, the performance of BICs is limited by the finite size of the structure, while the combination of multiple BICs can further improve the localization of resonances. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate the combination of Fabry-Perot and symmetry-protected BICs at near infrared wavelengths by employing a compound photonic crystal system composed of a photonic crystal slab and a distributed Bragg reflector, resulting in an enhanced high quality factor. Abstract:Avoided crossing of resonances and merging multiple bound states in the continuum (BICs) are parallel means for tailoring the physical properties of BICs. Herein, we introduce a concept of super quasi-BIC for photonic crystal (PhC) systems where its quality (Q) factor is boosted in both parametric and momentum spaces. A super quasi-BIC with substantial enhancement of Q factor can be achieved in a finite PhC by combining avoided crossing of two symmetry-protected (SP) quasi-BICs in parametric space and merging BICs in momentum space simultaneously. Of note, analytical theory shows that the proposed mechanism results in the transition of asymptotic behavior of the Q factor over the numbers of resonators from N-2 to exclusive N-3 for SP BICs, which is highly significant for realizing quasi-BICs in a compact PhC. Microwave experiments are performed to validate the theoretical results. Our results provide a paradigm shift for manipulating the physical properties quasi-BICs in finite PhC structures, which can also be generalized to the two-dimensional PhC slab case. It would facilitate various applications, including but not limited to low-threshold lasing and high figure-of-merit sensing, etc.

Abstract:Arbitrary polarized vortex beam induced by polarization singularity offers a new platform for both classical optics and quantum entanglement applications. Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have been demonstrated to be associated with topological charge and vortex polarization singularities in momentum space. For conventional symmetric photonic crystal slabs (PhCSs), BIC is enclosed by linearly polarized far fields with winding angle of 2π, which is unfavorable for high-capacity and multi-functionality integration-optics applications. Here, we show that by breaking σz-symmetry of the PhCS, asymmetry in upward and downward directions and arbitrarily polarized BIC can be realized with a bilayer-twisted PhCS. It exhibits elliptical polarization states with constant ellipticity angle at every point in momentum space within the vicinity of BIC. The topological nature of BIC reflects on the orientation angle of polarization state, with a topological charge of 1 for any value of ellipticity angle. Full coverage of Poincaré sphere (i.e., [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]) and higher-order Poincaré sphere can be realized by tailoring the twist angles. Our findings may open up new avenues for applications in structured light, quantum optics, and twistronics for photons.

Abstract:We develop a formalism, based on the mode expansion method, to describe the guided resonances and bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic crystal slabs with one-dimensional periodicity. This approach provides analytic insights to the formation mechanisms of these states: the guided resonances arise from the transverse Fabry–Pérot condition and the divergence of the resonance lifetimes at the BICs is explained by a destructive interference of radiation from different propagating components inside the slab. We show BICs at the center and on the edge of the Brillouin zone protected by symmetry, BICs at generic wave vectors not protected by symmetry and the annihilation of BICs at low-symmetry wave vectors.

Perturbation theory for resonant states near a bound state in the continuum

Abstract:In this work, we develop a perturbation theory to analyze resonant states near a bound state in the continuum (BIC) in photonic crystal slabs. The theory allows us to rigorously determine the asymptotic behavior of $Q$-factor and the far-field polarization. We show that the resonant states near a BIC can be nearly circularly polarized if the scattering matrix is subject to a certain condition. Moreover, our theory offers a novel perspective on super-BICs and provides a clear and precise condition to efficiently identify them in both symmetric and asymmetric structures without requiring a merging process. For practical applications, we find a super-BIC in a square lattice of cylinders on a dielectric substrate. Our theory addresses the non-Hermitian nature of the system, can be generalized to treat other structures that support BICs, and has potential applications in resonance and chiral optics.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) defy conventional wisdom that assumes a spectral separation between propagating waves, that carry energy away, and spatially localized waves corresponding to discrete frequencies. They can be described as resonance states with infinite lifetime, i.e., leaky modes with zero leakage. The advent of metamaterials and nanophotonics allowed the creation of BICs in a variety of systems. Mainly, BICs have been realized by destructive interference between outgoing resonant modes or exploiting engineered global symmetries that enforce the decoupling of a symmetry-incompatible bound mode from the surrounding radiation modes. Here, we introduce theoretically BICs relying on a different mechanism, namely local symmetries that enforce a field concentration on a part of a complex system without implying any global symmetry. We experimentally implement such BICs using microwaves in a compact one-dimensional photonic network and show that they emerge from the annihilation of two topological singularities, a zero and a pole, of the measured scattering matrix. Our alternative for achieving BICs in complex wave systems may be useful for applications like sensing, lasing, and enhancement of nonlinear interactions that require high-$Q$ modes.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) provide an important way for creating photonic devices reliant upon optical modes with high Q-factors. However, current experimental implementations of BICs in photonic crystal (PhC) slabs only possess a certain polarization, which fundamentally restricts their use to surface-enhanced applications assisted by scalar-polarized near fields. In this work, vector BICs in PhC slabs are theoretically designed and experimentally realized. In theory, the symmetry-protected vector BICs can be constructed by tuning geometric parameters of the PhC slab, where the coalescence of eigenfrequencies for a pair of TE- and TM-like modes appears. It is found that the homogeneous superchiral fields with three orders of magnitude larger than circular polarized lights can be achieved, assisted by vector quasi-BICs. Furthermore, Si3N4 PhC slabs are experimentally fabricated and their band structures are measured. It is shown that a pair of symmetry-protected BICs with TE- and TM-like polarizations can coalesce with each other at a suitable value for the diameter of array holes, indicating the realization of vector BICs. This work can possess important applications in the field of ultrasensitive detections of molecular chirality.
