Abstract:We solve a longstanding stability problem for the Kuramoto model of coupled oscillators. This system has attracted mathematical attention, in part because of its applications in fields ranging from neuroscience to condensed-matter physics, and also because it provides a beautiful connection between nonlinear dynamics and statistical mechanics. The model consists of a large population of phase oscillators with all-to-all sinusoidal coupling. The oscillators’ intrinsic frequencies are randomly distributed across the population according to a prescribed probability density, here taken to be unimodal and symmetric about its mean. As the coupling between the oscillators is increased, the system spontaneously synchronizes: the oscillators near the center of the frequency distribution lock their phases together and run at the same frequency, while those in the tails remain unlocked and drift at different frequencies. Although this “partially locked” state has been observed in simulations for decades, its stability has never been analyzed mathematically. Part of the difficulty is in formulating a reasonable infinite-N limit of the model. Here we describe such a continuum limit, and prove that the corresponding partially locked state is, in fact, neutrally stable, contrary to what one might have expected. The possible implications of this result are discussed.

Abstract:We analyze the linear stability of the phase-locked state in the Kuramoto model of coupled oscillators. The main result is the first rigorous characterization of the spectrum and its associated eigenvectors, for any finite number of oscillators. All but two of the eigenvalues are negative, and merge into a continuous spectrum as the number of oscillators tends to infinity. One eigenvalue is always zero, by rotational invariance. The final eigenvalue, corresponding to a collective mode, determines the stability of the locked state.

Abstract:We study phase locking in the Kuramoto model of coupled oscillators in the special case where the number of oscillators, , is large but finite, and the oscillators' natural frequencies are evenly spaced on a given interval. In this case, stable phase-locked solutions are known to exist if and only if the frequency interval is narrower than a certain critical width, called the locking threshold. For infinite , the exact value of the locking threshold was calculated 30 years ago; however, the leading corrections to it for finite have remained unsolved analytically. Here we derive an asymptotic formula for the locking threshold when . The leading correction to the infinite- result scales like either or , depending on whether the frequencies are evenly spaced according to a midpoint rule or an end-point rule. Abstract:The circuit equations for certain series arrays of Josephson junctions can be mapped onto a simple model originally introduced by Kuramoto [in Proceedings of the International Symposium on Mathematical Problems in Theoretical Physics, edited by H. Araki, Lecture Notes in Physics Vol. 39 (Springer, Berlin, 1975)] to study fundamental aspects of frequency locking in large populations of nonlinear oscillators. This correspondence makes it possible to derive accurate theoretical predictions of transitions signaling the onset of partial and complete locking, respectively. We calculate that both transitions should be observable experimentally using present fabrication tolerances.

Abstract:A generalization of the Kuramoto model in which oscillators are coupled to the mean field with random signs is investigated in this work. We focus on a situation in which the natural frequencies of oscillators follow a uniform probability density. By numerically simulating the model, we find that the model supports a modulated travelling wave state except for already reported π state and travelling wave state in the one with natural frequencies followingLorenztian probability density or a delta function. The dependence of the observed dynamics on the parameters of the model is explored and we find that the onset of synchronization in the model displays a non-monotonic dependence on both positive and negative coupling strength.

Abstract:We present the finite-size Kuramoto model analytically continued from real to complex variables and analyze its collective dynamics. For strong coupling, synchrony appears through locked states that constitute attractors, as for the real-variable system. However, synchrony persists in the form of \textit{complex locked states} for coupling strengths $K$ below the transition $K^{(\text{pl})}$ to classical \textit{phase locking}. Stable complex locked states indicate a locked sub-population of zero mean frequency in the real-variable model and their imaginary parts help identifying which units comprise that sub-population. We uncover a second transition at $K'<K^{(\text{pl})}$ below which complex locked states become linearly unstable yet still exist for arbitrarily small coupling strengths.

Abstract:We generalize the Kuramoto model of coupled oscillators to allow time-delayed interactions. New phenomena include bistability between synchronized and incoherent states, and unsteady solutions with time-dependent order parameters. We derive exact formulas for the stability boundaries of the incoherent and synchronized states, as a function of the delay, in the special case where the oscillators are identical. The experimental implications of the model are discussed for populations of chirping crickets, where the finite speed of sound causes communication delays, and for physical systems such as coupled phase-locked loops or lasers.

Abstract:We compute the spectrum for a class of quantum Markov semigroups describing systems of $N$ particle interacting through a binary collision mechanism. These quantum Markov semgroups are associated to a novel kind of quantum random walk on graphs, with the graph structure arising naturally in the quantization of the classical Kac model, and we show that the spectrum of the generator of the quantum Markov semigroup is closely related to the spectrum of the Laplacian on the corresponding graph. For the direct analog of the original classical Kac model, we determine the exact spectral gap for the quantum generator. We also give a new and simple method for studying the spectrum of certain graph Laplacians.
