Abstract:The nature of particle and entropy flow between two superfluids is often understood in terms of reversible flow carried by an entropy-free, macroscopic wavefunction. While this wavefunction is responsible for many intriguing properties of superfluids and superconductors, its interplay with excitations in non-equilibrium situations is less understood. Here we observe large concurrent flows of both particles and entropy through a ballistic channel connecting two strongly interacting fermionic superfluids. Both currents respond nonlinearly to chemical potential and temperature biases. We find that the entropy transported per particle is much larger than the prediction of superfluid hydrodynamics in the linear regime and largely independent of changes in the channel's geometry. By contrast, the timescales of advective and diffusive entropy transport vary significantly with the channel geometry. In our setting, superfluidity counterintuitively increases the speed of entropy transport. Moreover, we develop a phenomenological model describing the nonlinear dynamics within the framework of generalized gradient dynamics. Our approach for measuring entropy currents may help elucidate mechanisms of heat transfer in superfluids and superconducting devices.

Abstract:We study the effect of disorder on the propagation of collective excitations in a disordered Bose superfluid. We incorporate local density depletion induced by strong disorder at the meanfield level, and formulate the transport of the excitations in terms of a screened scattering problem. We show that the competition of disorder, screening, and density depletion induces a strongly non-monotonic energy dependence of the disorder parameter. In three dimensions, it results in a rich localization diagram with four different classes of mobility spectra, characterized by either no or up to three mobility edges. Implications on experiments with disordered ultracold atoms are discussed.

Abstract:The transport properties of strongly interacting fermionic systems can reveal exotic states of matter, but experiments and theory have predominantly focused on bulk systems in the hydrodynamic limit describable with linear response coefficients such as electrical and thermal conductivity. In a ballistic channel connecting two superfluid reservoirs, recent experiments revealed a far-from-equilibrium regime beyond linear hydrodynamics where particle and entropy currents respond nonlinearly to biases of chemical potential and temperature, and their ratio is robust to the channel geometry. However, the origin of this robustness and its relation to the strong interparticle interactions remain unknown. Here, we study the coupled transport of particles and entropy tuning the interaction across the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer to Bose-Einstein condensate (BCS-BEC) crossover, the reservoir degeneracy across the superfluid phase transition, as well as the local potentials and confinement of the channel. Surprisingly, the entropy advectively transported per particle depends only on the interactions and reservoir degeneracy and not on the details of the channel, suggesting that this property has its origin in the universal equilibrium properties of the reservoirs. In contrast, the magnitudes of the advective and diffusive entropy currents vary significantly with the channel details. The advective current increases monotonically towards the BEC side, which can be largely explained by the estimated superfluid gap in the channel. The Wiedemann-Franz law that links the advective and diffusive currents in Fermi liquids is most egregiously violated at unitarity, suggesting a change in the nature of the excitations responsible for entropy diffusion near unitarity. These observations pose fundamental questions regarding transport phenomena in strongly interacting Fermi systems far from equilibrium.

Abstract:Using the laws of thermodynamics together with empirical data, we present a qualitative geometric construction of the fundamental relation of a pure substance $S = S(E,N,V)$, with $S$ entropy, $E$ energy, $N$ number of particles and $V$ volume. We analyze two very general type of substances, a "normal" and a "quantum" one, the main difference between them being that the latter presents superfluid phases. It is found that the constant entropy level curves are completely different in both cases, in the normal substances being obtuse while acute in quantum ones. A concomitant signature of the previous result is that the chemical potential can be both positive and negative in quantum substances, but only negative in normal ones. Our results suggest the existence of a region in the quantum substances that may be identified as a supersolid phase. We also make emphasis on the relevance of the present study within the context of superfluidity in ultracold gases.

Abstract:We consider the superfluid phase of a specific renormalizable relativistic quantum field theory. We prove that, within the regime of validity of perturbation theory and of the superfluid effective theory, there are consistent and regular vortex solutions where the superfluid's velocity field as traditionally defined smoothly interpolates between zero and arbitrarily large superluminal values. We show that this solution is free of instabilities and of superluminal excitations. We show that, in contrast, a generic vortex solution for an ordinary fluid does develop an instability if the velocity field becomes superluminal. All this questions the characterization of a superfluid velocity field as the actual velocity of ``something".

Emergent Anomalous Hydrodynamics at Infinite Temperature in a Long-Range XXZ Model

Abstract:The conventional wisdom suggests that transports of conserved quantities in non-integrable quantum many-body systems at high temperatures are diffusive. However, we discover a counterexample of this paradigm by uncovering anomalous hydrodynamics in a spin-1/2 XXZ chain with power-law couplings. This model, classified as non-integrable due to its Wigner-Dyson level-spacing statistics in the random matrix theory, exhibits a surprising superdiffusive-ballistic-superdiffusive transport transition by varying the power-law exponent of couplings for a fixed anisotropy. Our findings are verified by multiple observables, including the spin-spin autocorrelator, mean-square displacement, and spin conductivity. Interestingly, we further quantify the degree of quantum chaos using the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the entanglement entropy distributions of the model's eigenstates and a random state. Remarkably, an observed local maximum in the divergence near the transition boundary suggests a link between anomalous hydrodynamics and a suppression of quantum chaos. This work offers another deep understanding of emergent anomalous transport phenomena in a wider range of non-integrable quantum many-body systems

Abstract:Low-temperature thermal fluctuations offer an essential window in characterizing the true nature of a quantum state of matter, a quintessential example being Fermi liquid theory. Here, we examine the leading thermal fluctuation of the superfluid density across numerous families ranging from relatively conventional to highly unconventional superconductors (MgB$_2$, bismuthates, doped buckyballs, heavy fermions, UTe$_2$, doped SrTiO$_3$, Chevrel clusters, intermetallics, organic superconductors, transition metal dichalcogenides, ruthenates, iron-pnictides, cuprates, and kagome metals). Amazingly, in all of them an unprecedented universal $T^3$ depletion materializes in the low-temperature superfluid density, even in the believed-to-be-conventional MgB$_2$. This reveals a new quantum superfluid state of matter and requires a necessary change of paradigm in describing modern superconductors. We demonstrate that such unorthodox yet generic behavior can be described by a strictly Galilean consistent theory of bosonic superfluidity hosting a long-lived 'true condensate'.

Abstract:The dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate is studied theoretically in a combined periodic plus harmonic external potential. Different dynamical regimes of stable and unstable collective dipole and Bloch oscillations are analysed in terms of a quantum mechanical pendulum model. Nonlinear interactions are shown to counteract quantum-mechanical dephasing and lead to phase-coherent, superfluid transport.

Borromean supercounterfluids at finite temperatures

Abstract:While the properties of standard (single-component) superfluids are well understood, principal differences arise in a special type of multicomponent systems -- the so-called Borromean supercounterfluids -- in which (i) supertransport is possible only in the counterflow regime and (ii) there are three or more counterflowing components. Borromean supercounterfluids's correlation and topological properties distinguish them from their single- and two-component counterparts. The component-symmetric case characterized by a distinctively different universality class of the supercounterfluid-to-normal phase transition is especially interesting. Using the recently introduced concept of compact-gauge invariance as the guiding principle, we develop the finite-temperature description of Borromean supercounterfluids in terms of an asymptotically exact long-wave effective action. We formulate and study Borromean XY and loop statistical models, capturing the universal long-range properties and allowing us to perform efficient worm algorithm simulations. Numeric results demonstrate perfect agreement with analytic predictions. Particularly instructive is the two-dimensional case, where the Borromean nature of the system is strongly manifested while allowing for an asymptotically exact analytic description.

Superfluidity from correlations in driven boson systems

Abstract:We investigate theoretically the superfluidity of a one-dimensional boson system whose hopping energy is periodically modulated with a zero time average, which results in the suppression of first-order single-particle hopping processes. The dynamics of this flat band system is entirely driven by correlations and described by exotic Hamiltonian and current operators. We employ exact diagonalization and compare our results with those of the conventional, undriven Bose-Hubbard system. We focus on the two main manifestations of superfluidity, the Hess-Fairbank effect and the metastability of supercurrents, with explicit inclusion of an impurity when relevant. Among the novel superfluid features, we highlight the presence of a cat-like ground state, with branches that have opposite crystal momentum but carry the same flux-dependent current, and the essential role of the interference between the collective components of the ground-state wave function. Calculation of the dynamic form factor reveals the presence of an acoustic mode that guarantees superfluidity in the thermodynamic limit.

Abstract:A "supersolid" -- a crystal that exhibits an off-diagonal long-range order and a superflow -- has been a subject of much research since its first proposal [Andreev and Lifshitz 1969], but has not been realized as a ground state of short-range interacting bosons in a continuum. In this note I point out a simple and generic mechanism for a thermally-driven reentrant supersolidity, and discuss challenges of experimental realization of this idea. In the limit of bosons in a periodic potential, this mechanism reduces to a {\em reentrant} low-temperature normal-superfluid transition, that should be accessible to simulations and in current experiments on bosonic atoms in an optical periodic potential.

Abstract:Even when ideal solids are insulating, their states with crystallographic defects may have superfluid properties. It became clear recently that edge dislocations in $^4$He featuring a combination of microscopic quantum roughness and superfluidity of their cores may represent a new paradigmatic class of quasi-one-dimensional superfluids. The new state of matter, termed transverse quantum fluid (TQF), is found in a variety of physical setups. The key ingredient defining the class of TQF systems is infinite compressibility, which is responsible for all other unusual properties such as the quadratic spectrum (or even the absence) of normal modes, irrelevance of the Landau criterion, off-diagonal long-range order at $T = 0$, and the exponential dependence of the phase slip probability on the inverse flow velocity. From a conceptual point of view, the TQF state is a striking demonstration of the conditional character of many dogmas associated with superfluidity, including the necessity of elementary excitations, in general, and the ones obeying Landau criterion in particular.

Excess entropy of strongly coupled Yukawa fluids

Abstract:The entropy of strongly coupled Yukawa fluids is discussed from several perspectives. First, it is demonstrated that a vibrational paradigm of atomic dynamics in dense fluids can be used to obtain a simple and accurate estimate of the entropy without any adjustable parameters. Second, it is explained why a quasiuniversal value of the excess entropy of simple fluids at the freezing point should be expected, and it is demonstrated that a remaining very weak dependence of the freezing point entropy on the screening parameter in the Yukawa fluid can be described by a simple linear function. Third, a scaling of the excess entropy with the freezing temperature is examined, a modified form of the Rosenfeld-Tarazona scaling is put forward, and some consequences are briefly discussed. Fourth, the location of the Frenkel line on the phase diagram of Yukawa systems is discussed in terms of the excess entropy and compared with some predictions made in the literature. Fifth, the excess entropy scaling of the transport coefficients (self-diffusion, viscosity, and thermal conductivity) is reexamined using the contemporary datasets for the transport properties of Yukawa fluids. The results could be of particular interest in the context of complex (dusty) plasmas, colloidal suspensions, electrolytes, and other related systems with soft pairwise interactions.

Abstract:Understanding the interface dynamics in nonequilibrium quantum systems remains a challenge. We study the interface dynamics of strongly coupled immiscible binary superfluids by using holographic duality. The full nonlinear evolution of the binary superfluids with a relative velocity shows rich nonlinear patterns toward quantum turbulence, which is reminiscent of the quantum Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. The wave number of the fastest growing modes k0 extracted from the interface pattern yields a nonmonotonic dependence of the relative velocity, independent of the temperature and interaction. The value of k0 first increases with the velocity difference and then decreases, which stands in sharp contrast to the results of mean-field theory described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and is confirmed by using the linear analyses on top of the stationary configuration. We uncover that the critical velocity associated with the maximum corresponds to the case when the mean separation of vortices generated by interface instabilities becomes comparable to the vortex size, which could be a universal physical mechanism at strongly interacting superfluids and is directly testable in laboratory experiments. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.106022 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:By analyzing two Kinetically Constrained Models of supercooled liquids we show that the anomalous transport of a driven tracer observed in supercooled liquids is another facet of the phenomenon of dynamical heterogeneity. We focus on the Fredrickson-Andersen and the Bertin-Bouchaud-Lequeux models. By numerical simulations and analytical arguments we demonstrate that the violation of the Stokes-Einstein relation and the observed field-induced superdiffusion have the same physical origin: while a fraction of probes do not move, others jump repeatedly because they are close to local mobile regions. The anomalous fluctuations observed out of equilibrium in presence of a pulling force $\epsilon$, $\sigma_x^2(t) = \langle x_\epsilon^2(t) \rangle - \langle x_\epsilon(t) \rangle^2 \sim t^{3/2}$, which are accompanied by the asymptotic decay $\alpha_\epsilon(t)\sim t^{-1/2}$ of the non-Gaussian parameter from non-trivial values to zero, are due to the splitting of the probes population in the two (mobile and immobile) groups and to dynamical correlations, a mechanism expected to happen generically in supercooled liquids.

Superfluid Edge Dislocation: Transverse Quantum Fluid

Abstract:Recently, it has been argued by Kuklov et al., that unusual features associated with the superflow-through-solid effect observed in solid He4 can be explained by unique properties of dilute distribution of superfluid edge dislocations. We demonstrate that stability of supercurrents controlled by quantum phase slips (instantons), and other exotic infrared properties of the superfluid dislocations readily follow from a one-dimensional quantum liquid distinguished by an effectively infinite compressibility (in the absence of Peierls potential) associated with the edge dislocation's ability to climb. This establishes a new class of quasi-one-dimensional superfluid states that remain stable and long-range ordered despite their low dimensionality. We propose an experiment to test our mass-current--pressure characteristic prediction.

Abstract:Finding the breaking point A superfluid can flow without viscosity but only if the speed of the flow is lower than the so-called critical velocity. Sobirey et al. measured the critical velocity of a system of ultracold fermionic atoms confined to two dimensions. The researchers trapped a gas of lithium-6 atoms in a box-shaped potential and then moved another, periodic potential through the trap.
