Abstract:Supramolecular assembly utilizing noncovalent interaction to construct ordered molecular charge-transfer solids has led to significant advancement and breakthrough in energy-efficient molecular electronics, memories and solar cells. However, to exploit the coupling across these different energy regimes, the method that is capable of manipulating charge-spinlattice interactions is indispensable. Here, by rational chemical design of the supramolecular assembled charge-transfer networks, opto-ferroic properties can be coupled, in which a collective electron transfer and ordering strongly influence the dipole and spin orders, as well as their coupling. The supramolecular charge-transfer crystal presented here opens up a new route for the development of multifunctional organics that can lead to significant advancement in molecular ferronics.

Abstract:Organic charge-transfer superstructures are enabling new interfacial electronics, such as organic thermoelectrics, spin-charge converters, and solar cells. These carbon-based materials could also play an important role in spin-based electronics due to their exceptionally long spin lifetime. However, to explore these potentials a coherent design strategy to control interfacial charge-transfer interaction is indispensable. Here we report that the control of organic crystallization and interfacial electron coupling are keys to dictate external stimuli responsive behaviors in organic charge-transfer superstructures. The integrated experimental and computational study reveals the importance of chemically driven interfacial coupling in organic charge-transfer superstructures. Such degree of engineering opens up a new route to develop a new generation of functional charge-transfer materials, enabling important advance in all organic interfacial electronics.
Transforming Porous Organic Cages into Porous Ionic Liquids Via a Supramolecular Complexation Strategy

Abstract:Porous liquids are a type of porous materials that engineer permanent porosity into unique flowing liquids, exhibiting promising functionalities for a variety of applications. Here a Type I porous liquid is synthesized by transforming porous organic cages into porous ionic liquids via a supramolecular complexation strategy. Simple physical mixing of 18-crown-6 with task-specific anionic porous organic cages affords a porous ionic liquid with anionic porous organic cages as the anionic parts and 18-crown-6/potassium ion complexes as the cationic parts. In contrast, mixing of 15-crown-5 and anionic porous organic cages in a 2:1 ratio gives only solids, while the addition of excess 15-crown-5 affords a Type II porous liquid. The permanent porosity in the cage-based porous liquids has been also confirmed by molecular simulation, positron (e(+)) annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, and enhanced gas sorption capacity compared with pure crown ethers.

Abstract:Herein, we present an exceptional structural transformation from a porous supramolecular network to a porous coordination polymer. The transformation involves a change of interpenetrating dimensionality from 6-fold to 5-fold. Simultaneously, the spin state of nickel(ii) is altered from S = 0 to S = 1, which is concomitant with the formation of the Ni-O(carboxylate) coordination bonds.

Abstract:Functional nanosized cage complexes with an octahedral framework have been synthesized by the facile self-assembly reactions of six 90 PdII-containing compounds {[Pd(dppf)(OTf)(2)] or [Pd(PPh3)(OTf)(2)], dppf = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphanyl) ferrocene, OTf = trifluoromethylsulfonate} and four 120 degrees functional tritopic ligands [2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine] in acetone. Diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) and AFM images clarify the formation of 3-4 nm nanoparticles. These highly symmetrical cage complexes are discrete, face-directed, functional nanoparticles with symmetrical octahedral structures. The self-assembled functional cage complexes exhibit interesting electrochemical activities, and thus will potentially be useful in the catalysis of redox reactions, the encapsulation of sizeable guest molecules and the control of organic synthetic reactions.

Abstract:Shape‐persistent organic cages are an intriguing class of molecular porous materials. Through hierarchical molecular design, size and shape of the intrinsic molecular voids are controlled by dynamic covalent chemistry, while pore structure and topology are governed by noncovalent alignment in the solid state. However, the predictable and reliable crystallization of organic cages is still challenging since long‐range superstructures are solely based on weak and rather unidirectional supramolecular interactions. In this tutorial review, we provide a general classification of porous solid‐state materials and discuss specific design principles regarding the dynamic covalent reactions, the small‐molecule building blocks and solid‐state engineering. Furthermore, we introduce the most important analytical techniques for porous materials with a special focus on organic cages.

Abstract:A novel class of crystalline porous materials has been developed utilizing multilevel dynamic linkages, including covalent B-O, dative B←N and hydrogen bonds. Typically, boronic acids undergo in situ condensation to afford B3O3-based units, which further extend to molecular complexes or chains via B←N bonds. The obtained superstructures are subsequently interconnected via hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions, producing crystalline porous organic frameworks (CPOFs). The CPOFs display excellent solution processability, allowing dissolution and subsequent crystallization to their original structures, independent of recrystallization conditions, possibly due to the diverse bond energies of the involved interactions. Significantly, the CPOFs can be synthesized on a gram-scale using cost-effective monomers. In addition, the numerous acidic sites endow the CPOFs with high NH3 capacity, surpassing most porous organic materials and commercial materials.

Readily Accessible Shape-Memory Effect in a Porous Interpenetrated Coordination Network

Abstract:Shape-memory effects are quite well-studied in general, but there is only one reported example in the context of porous materials. We report the second example of a porous coordination network that exhibits a sorbate-induced shape-memory effect and the first in which multiple sorbates, N2, CO2 and CO promote this effect. The material, a new threefold interpenetrated pcu network, [Zn2(4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylate)2(1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)benzene)]n (X-pcu-3-Zn-3i), exhibits three distinct phases: the as-synthesized α phase; a denser-activated β phase; and a shape-memory γ phase, which is intermediate in density between the α and β phases. The γ phase is kinetically stable over multiple adsorption/desorption cycles and only reverts to the β phase when heated at >400 K under vacuum. The α phase can be regenerated by soaking the γ phase in N,N'-dimethylformamide. Single-crystal x-ray crystallography studies of all three phases provide insight into the shape-memory phenomenon by revealing the nature of interactions between interpenetrated networks. The β and γ phases were further investigated by in situ coincidence powder x-ray diffraction, and their sorption isotherms were replicated by density functional theory calculations. Analysis of the structural information concerning the three phases of X-pcu-3-Zn-3i enabled us to understand structure-function relationships and propose crystal engineering principles for the design of more examples of shape-memory porous materials.
Responsive Supramolecular Polymer Metallogel Constructed by Orthogonal Coordination-Driven Self-Assembly and Host/guest Interactions.

Abstract:An emerging strategy for the fabrication of advanced supramolecular materials is the use of hierarchical self-assembly techniques wherein multiple orthogonal interactions between molecular precursors can produce new species with attractive properties. Herein, we unify the spontaneous formation of metal-ligand bonds with the host/guest chemistry of crown ethers to deliver a 3D supramolecular polymer network (SPN). Specifically, we have prepared a highly directional dipyridyl donor decorated with a benzo-21-crown-7 moiety that undergoes coordination-driven self-assembly with a complementary organoplatinum acceptor to furnish hexagonal metallacycles. These hexagons subsequently polymerize into a supramolecular network upon the addition of a bisammonium salt due to the formation of [2]pseudorotaxane linkages between the crown ether and ammonium moieties. At high concentrations, the resulting 3D SPN becomes a gel comprising many cross-linked metallohexagons. Notably, thermo- and cation-induced gel-sol transitions are found to be completely reversible, reflecting the dynamic and tunable nature of such supramolecular materials. As such, these results demonstrate the structural complexity that can be obtained when carefully controlling multiple interactions in a hierarchical fashion, in this case coordination and host/guest chemistry, and the interesting dynamic properties associated with the materials thus obtained.

Abstract:The popular design of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) from the chain relaxation of polymers faces the trade-offs among ion conductivity, stability, and processability. Herein, 2 nm inorganic cryptand molecules with the capability to carry different types of cations, including Ag+, Na+, K+, and Ca2+, are complexed with cationic polymers via ionic interaction, respectively, and the hybrid materials further phase separate into lamellar or hexagonal columnar structures. The successful establishment of ordered structures with ion channels from the packing of inorganic cryptands confers SSEs' excellent ionic conductivity to versatile types of cations. Meanwhile, suggested from the combination of broad dielectric spectroscopy, rheology, and thermal analysis, the fast chain relaxation can activate the dynamics of inorganic cryptand molecules and facilitate the ion hopping process in ion channels. The supramolecular interaction in the complex enables the highly flexible physical appearance for defect-free contact with electrodes as well as cost-effective processability and recyclability.

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed the rapid progress in synthesizing nanoporous organic networks or polymer frameworks for various potential applications. Generally speaking, functionalization of porous networks to add extra properties and enhance materials performance could be achieved either during the pore formation (thus a concurrent approach) or post-synthetic modification (a sequential approach). Nanoporous organic networks which include ion pairs in a covalent manner are of special importance and possess extreme application profiles. Within these nanoporous ionic organic networks (NIONs), here with a pore size in the range from sub-1 nm to 100 nm, we observe a synergistic coupling of the electrostatic interaction of charges, the nanoconfinement within pores and the addressable functional units in soft matter resulting in a wide variety of functions and applications, above all catalysis, energy storage and conversion, as well as environmental operations. This review aims to highlight the recent progress in this area, and seeks to raise original perspectives that will stimulate future advancements at both the fundamental and applied level.
