Abstract:Multicomponent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) promise the precise placement of synergistic functional groups with atomic-level precision, capable of promoting fascinating developments in basic sciences and applications. However, the complexity of multicomponent systems poses a challenge to their structural design and synthesis. Herein, we show that linkers of low symmetry can bring new opportunities to the construction of multicomponent MOFs. A carbazole-tetracarboxylate linker of C-s point group symmetry was designed and combined with an 8-connected Zr-6 cluster to generate a low-symmetry MOF, PCN-609. PCN-609 contains coordinatively unsaturated Zr sites arranged within a lattice with three crystallographically distinct pockets, which can accommodate linear linkers of different lengths. Sequential linker installation was carried out to postsynthetically insert three linear linkers into PCN-609, giving rise to a quinary MOF. Functionalization of each linker from the quinary MOF system creates multivariate pore environments with unprecedented complexity.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of crystalline porous polymers in which organic building blocks are covalently and topologically linked to form extended crystalline polygon structures, constituting a new platform for designing π-electronic porous materials. However, COFs are currently synthesised by a few chemical reactions, limiting the access to and exploration of new structures and properties. The development of new reaction systems that avoid such limitations to expand structural diversity is highly desired. Here we report that COFs can be synthesised via a double-stage connection that polymerises various different building blocks into crystalline polygon architectures, leading to the development of a new type of COFs with enhanced structural complexity and diversity. We show that the double-stage approach not only controls the sequence of building blocks but also allows fine engineering of pore size and shape. This strategy is widely applicable to different polymerisation systems to yield hexagonal, tetragonal and rhombus COFs with predesigned pores and π-arrays.

Abstract:The marriage of dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC) and coordination chemistry is a powerful tool for assembling complex architectures from simple building units. Recently, the synthesis of woven covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with topologically fascinating structures has been achieved using this approach. However, the scope is highly limited and there is a need to discover new pathways that can assemble covalently linked organic threads into crystalline frameworks. Herein, we have identified branching pathways leading to the assembly of three-dimensional (3D) woven COFs or one-dimensional (1D) metallo-COFs (mCOFs), where the mechanism is underpinned by the absence or presence of ligand exchange.

Abstract:Unlike inorganic crystals, metal-organic frameworks do not have a well-developed nanostructure library, and establishing their appropriately diverse and complex architectures remains a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate a general route to control metal-organic framework structure by a solvent-assisted ligand exchange approach. Thirteen different types of metal-organic framework structures have been prepared successfully. To demonstrate a proof of concept application, we used the obtained metal-organic framework materials as precursors for synthesizing nanoporous carbons and investigated their electrochemical Na + storage properties. Due to the unique architecture, the one-dimensional nanoporous carbon derived from double-shelled ZnCo bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework nanotubes exhibits high specific capacity as well as superior rate capability and cycling stability. Our study offers an avenue for the controllable preparation of well-designed meta-organic framework structures and their derivatives, which would further broaden the application opportunities of metal-organic framework materials.

Abstract:A very rare structurally characterized CO2-coordinated metal-organic framework was synthesized by a solvothermal reaction. The CO2 ligand links two open Zn metal centers in a linear and symmetrical μ(O,O') coordination mode with a C[double bond, length as m-dash]O distance of 1.107(4) Å. The new complex reported here is stable under ambient conditions and may provide a new strategy for CO2 fixation.

Abstract:A procedure for making covalently linked organometallic complexes within the pores of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) has been described. An N-heterocyclic carbene precursor containing link L0 was prepared and then constructed into a MOF-5-type structure (IRMOF-76). Attempts to produce covalently bound organometallic complexes in IRMOF-76 were unsuccessful. An alternative way of linking the first metalated link, L1, into the desired metalated MOF structure, IRMOF-77, was successful. IRMOF-76 and -77 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray studies. Demonstration of permanent porosity and successful substitution of the pyridine coligand in IRMOF-77 are also described.

Abstract:Since the emergence of the concept of chemical topology, interlocked molecular assemblies have graduated from academic curiosities and poorly defined species to become synthetic realities. Coordination-directed synthesis provides powerful, diverse, and increasingly sophisticated protocols for accessing interlocked molecules. Originally, metal ions were employed solely as templates to gather and position building blocks in entwined or threaded arrangements. Recently, metal centers have increasingly featured within the backbones of the integral structural elements, which in turn use noncovalent interactions to self-assemble into intricate topologies. By outlining ingenious recent examples as well as seminal classic cases, this Review focuses on the role of metal-ligand paradigms in assembling molecular links. In addition, the ever-evolving approaches to efficient assembly, the structural features of the resulting architectures, and their prospects for the future are also presented.

Abstract:A porous metal-organic framework [Co(SCN)(2)(EDPC)(2)(H2O)(3)](n) (1; EDPC = 1,2-ethanediyl di-3-pyridinecarboxylate) has been synthesized and structurally characterized. Immersing the crystals of 1 in THF solution led to the dynamic framework of 1 undergoing a crystal-to-crystal guest-exchange process to afford the helical metallacyclic polymer [Co(SCN)(2)(EDPC)(2)(THF)](n) [1 subset of THF]. The guest THF molecules were accommodated in the cavities of the metallacyclic chains and showed the handness of the helical chains by their oxygen atoms as probes.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of crystalline porous polymers with tailor-made structures and functionalities. To facilitate their utilization for advanced applications, it is crucial to develop a systematic approach to control the properties of COFs, including the crystallinity, stability, and functionalities. However, such an integrated design is challenging to achieve. Herein, we report supramolecular strategy-based linkage engineering to fabricate a versatile 2D hydrazone-linked COF platform for the coordination of different transition metal ions. Intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonding as well as electrostatic interactions in the antiparallel stacking mode were first utilized to obtain two isoreticular COFs, namely COF–DB and COF–DT. On account of suitable nitrogen sites in COF–DB, the further metalation of COF–DB was accomplished upon the complexation with seven divalent transition metal ions M(II) (M = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pd, and Cd) under mild conditions. The resultant M/COF–DB exhibited extended π-conjugation, improved crystallinity, enhanced stability, and additional functionalities as compared to the parent COF–DB. Furthermore, the dynamic nature of the coordination bonding in M/COF–DB allows for the easy replacement of metal ions through a postsynthetic exchange. In particular, the coordination mode in Pd/COF–DB endows it with excellent catalytic activity and cyclic stability as a heterogeneous catalyst for the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction, outperforming its amorphous counterparts and Pd/COF–DT. Abstract:Yolk–shell composites offer a promising platform for integrating cores into hollow shells to create unique structures and properties. However, the concomitant functionality and tunability of yolk–shell nanocomposites is still a great challenge but highly desirable. Herein, we demonstrate a rational design for the fabrication of yolk–shell-structured covalent organic framework (COF)@metal–organic framework (MOF) () nanocomposites with COF as the external shell and MOF as the inner yolk. Series of the composites with different MOF cores and COF shells were readily synthesized via a template-free solvothermal method. Control experiments showed that the formation of the hollow cavity between the core and the shell originated from the amorphous-to-crystalline transformation and the simultaneous shrinkage of the shell under the pyrrolidine-catalyzed conditions. The resultant merges the inherent structure tunability and functionality of both COFs and MOFs. The functions of can be regulated and optimized by judicious selections of metal ions and organic building blocks. Abstract:The incorporation of new coordinate bonds and the development of universal methods for new structures have always been of major interest in metal-organic framework (MOF) research. The poor reversibility makes metal-carbon (M-C) bonds a great challenge to adopt as linkages to construct crystalline MOFs. Herein, three isoreticular microcrystalline MOFs connected by silver-carbon (Ag-C) bonds are presented for the first time and named AgC-MOFs. Their structures contain a double coordination mode (σ and π) between Ag(I) and alkynyl. The three AgC-MOFs all exhibit three-dimensional (3D) frameworks with uniform one-dimensional (1D) hexagonal channels, and the pore width could be tuned from 1.1 to 1.8 nm. The construction of crystalline MOFs using poorly reversible Ag-C coordinate bonds extends the nexuses for the MOF structure and lights up more possibilities for the systematic design of MOFs.

Abstract:A microporous metal organic framework (MOF), PCN-922 [Cu-4(ETTB)], containing a dendritic octatopic organic linker and a Cu-2-paddlewheel structural motif, has been synthesized by using a Zn-2-paddlewheel-based MOP as a template to prearrange the linkers for the Cu-2-based MOF target. Abstract:Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) exhibiting kagome (kgm) structures are promising crystalline porous materials with two distinct pores. However, the challenge arises from the potential formation of the polymorphic square-lattice (sql) structure, which is undesired in some cases. To this, we introduce a novel linker design strategy featuring bulky functional groups, enforcing the preferred kgm structure, while hindering sql network formation. Implementing this design, we synthesized a terphenyl core-based tetraaldehyde linker (4A2E) incorporating a bulky methoxycarbonyl-terminated phenyl group. By varying the diamine linker lengths, using phenylenediamine (PDA) and benzidine (Bz), the steric interaction was tuned leading to the formation of different topologies. Structural analysis revealed the formation of a kgm network formation with an unusual ABC stacking for the 4A2E-PDA-COF with the short PDA linker, in contrast to the sql network in 4A2E-Bz-COF with the longer benzidine. This steric interaction-driven design enhances control over COF structures, expanding the design toolbox, but also provides valuable insights into network formation and polymorphism.

Abstract:A major goal of metal-organic framework (MOF) research is the expansion of pore size and volume. Although many approaches have been attempted to increase the pore size of MOF materials, it is still a challenge to construct MOFs with precisely customized pore apertures for specific applications. Herein, we present a new method, namely linker labilization, to increase the MOF porosity and pore size, giving rise to hierarchical-pore architectures. Microporous MOFs with robust metal nodes and pro-labile linkers were initially synthesized. The mesopores were subsequently created as crystal defects through the splitting of a pro-labile-linker and the removal of the linker fragments by acid treatment. We demonstrate that linker labilization method can create controllable hierarchical porous structures in stable MOFs, which facilitates the diffusion and adsorption process of guest molecules to improve the performances of MOFs in adsorption and catalysis.

Abstract:The solvothermal reaction of two new neutral tetradentate ligands with different bivalent metal salts gave seven metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): [Co-2(L1) (trans-chdc)(2)]center dot 5H(2)O (1), [Zn-2(L1)(trans-chdc)(NO2)(2)]center dot DMF (2), [Cd-2(L1)(trans-chdc)(2)]center dot 4H(2)O (3), [Zn-2(L1)(1,4-bdc)(2)]center dot(H2O)(3) (4), [Cd-2(L1)(1,4-bdc)(2)]center dot DMF center dot(solvent)(x) (5), [Co(L2) (trans-chdc)(H2O)]center dot 1.5H(2)O (6), [Co(L2) (1,4-bdc) (H2O)]center dot 2H(2)O (7), (L1 = 1,1'-oxybis[3,5-diimidazole]-benzene, L2 = 1,1'-oxybis[3,5-dipyridine]-benzene, trans-chdc = trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid, 1,4-bdc = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate). These MOFs were prepared to examine the effects of the core metal ion or organic ligand on the topology and interpenetration form. The results show that the imidazole ligand can rotate easily to coordinate to metal ions, while pyridine ligand exhibits the weaker coordinative abilities, which may influence the self-assembly. Compounds 1, 3, and 5 are three-dimensional (3D) frameworks with 2-fold interpenetrated forms, whereas complex 4 shows a 3-fold interpenetrated structure. Interestingly, compound 2 exhibits a 4-fold interpenetration. Compound 6 features a two-dimensional polymeric layer structure which exhibits a rare 2-fold interpenetrating 3D hms array if H-bonds are taken into account. For compound 7, the dinuclear cobalt secondary building unit (SBU) assembles with mixed ligands L2 and 1,4-bdc to construct a 3D alpha-Po structure.
