Abstract:Unlike inorganic crystals, metal-organic frameworks do not have a well-developed nanostructure library, and establishing their appropriately diverse and complex architectures remains a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate a general route to control metal-organic framework structure by a solvent-assisted ligand exchange approach. Thirteen different types of metal-organic framework structures have been prepared successfully. To demonstrate a proof of concept application, we used the obtained metal-organic framework materials as precursors for synthesizing nanoporous carbons and investigated their electrochemical Na + storage properties. Due to the unique architecture, the one-dimensional nanoporous carbon derived from double-shelled ZnCo bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework nanotubes exhibits high specific capacity as well as superior rate capability and cycling stability. Our study offers an avenue for the controllable preparation of well-designed meta-organic framework structures and their derivatives, which would further broaden the application opportunities of metal-organic framework materials.

Abstract:Five new metal organic frameworks incorporating the angular tetratopic ligand with different transition metal ions and bent coligands have been synthesized: [Zn-4(L)(2)(4,4'-sdb)(4)(H2O)(2)]center dot 3H(2)O (1), [Zn-2(L)(2)(hfipbb)(2)(H2O)(3)] (2), [Zn(L)(oba)]center dot H2O (3), [Cd-2(L)(2)(4,4'-sdb)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O (4), [Cd-2(L)(hfipbb)-(H2O)(3)]center dot 2H(2)O (5), [L = 1,1'-oxybis[3,5-dipyridine-benzene, 4,4',-H(2)sdb = 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoate, H(2)hfipbb = 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)bis(benzoic acid), H(2)oba = 4,4'-oxybis(benzoate)]. Structural analysis reveals that the mixed ligands display versatile coordination modes to manage the metal ions to form homochiral, inclined polycatenation (1D -> 2D), 3-fold interpenetrating nets. However, the different coordinated modes, geometry, and flexibility of ligands around metal ions result in subtle differences in the final architecture. Bulk materials for 1 and 3 have a second-harmonic generation activity, approximately 0.4 and 0.8 times that of urea.

Abstract:Two flexible exo-bidentate ligands, 2,2'-bis(3-pyridylmethyleneoxy)-1,1'-biphenylene (3,3'-bpp) and 2,2'-bis(4-pyridylmethyleneoxy)-1,1'-biphenylene (4,4'-bpp), were synthesized and employed for the preparation of coordination polymers. Seven metal-organic complexes, [Zn-2(3,3'-bpp)(2)Cl-4] (1), [Zn-2(3,3'-bpp)(2)Br-4] (2), [Zn(4,4'-bpp)Cl-2](n) (3), [Zn(4,4'bpp)Br-2](n) (4). [Co(4,4'-bpp)(2)(SCN)(2)](n) (5), {[Cd(4,4'bpp)(2)(SCN)(2)].2H(2)O}(n) (6) and [Cd(4,4'-bpp)(dca)(2)](n) (7) (dca(-) = dicyanamide), have been obtained through self-assembly reactions of 3,3'-bpp or 4,4'-bpp with the divalent metal ions Zn-II, Co-II and Cd-II. Crystal structure analyses reveal that 1 and 2 are dinuclear metallomacrocycles, are isomorphous and possess a layer network built from metallomacrocycles through pi-pi interactions. In drastic contrast, 3 and 4 exhibit a three-dimensional structure consisting of one-dimensional polymeric chains held together through pi-pi interactions between adjacent pyridyl rings. The metal-organic frameworks of 5, 6, and 7 possess unusual topologies: Complex 5 is a two-dimensional polymer based on folded rectangular boxes and zigzag chains, whereas 6 is a polycatenated species consisting of inclined interpenetrating two-dimensional layers, and each layer is constructed by the alternating assembly of left-hand (M) and right-hand (P) cylindrical 2(1) helices. In 7, dca(-) connects Cd-II centers forming a two-dimensional {Cd(dca)(2)}, layer, which is fused with (M)- and (P)-Cd-(4,4'-bpp) helical chains into a three-dimensional structure. The results suggest that the nature of organic ligands and the coordination preferences of transitional metal ions have a great influence on the structures of metal-organic complexes. Abstract:Taking advantage of a basic ligand (BPCH=2,6-bis(4-pyridyl methylidene)cyclohexanone) and three acid ligands (H2TP=terephthalic acid, H2IP=isophthalic acid, H(3)TMA=1, 3, 5 - benzenetricarboxylic acid), seven metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) 1-7 have been achieved by using this acid-base mixed-ligand synthetic strategy. These complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectra, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. Diverse 3D structural characters of MOFs 1-3 or 2D structural characters of MOFs 4-7 have been observed. The fluorescence properties of these complexes have been explored, indicating that they had selectivity towards Fe3+ ions. Several complexes had shown certain performance for adsorbing dye molecules.

Abstract:Four new metal-organic frameworks based on a new star-like ligand tri(4-pyridylphenyl)amine (TPPA), namely, {[Cd(TPPA)(trans-chdc)]}(n) (1), {[Co(TPPA)2(D-ca)(2)]center dot(H2O)}(n) (2), {[Ni(TPPA)(bdc)(H2O)]-(H2O)(4)}(n) (3), {[Ni(TPPA)(trans-chdc)-(H2O)center dot(H2O)(4)}(n) (4), (trans-H(2)chdc = trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid, D-H(2)ca. = D-camphor acid, acid, H(2)bdc = benzene-p-dicarboxylic acid), have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Compound 1 represents the first example of a 4-fold interpenetrating 3D metal-organic polyrotaxane framework, with {4(2).6(5).8(3)}{4(2).6} AFUQOH topology. In 2, each D-ca(2-) anion links adjacent Co2+ atoms to a 2D framework, and only one N atom from each TPPA ligand is involved in coordination, which should be partly attributed to the weak flexibility of the TPPA ligand. Both 3 and 4 reveal 3-fold interpenetrating 3D frameworks bridged by TPPA ligands and bdc(2-) (or trans-chdc(2-)) anions, with {4.6(2)}{4(3).6(7)} crs topology. In addition, photophysical properties of 1 and the TPPA ligand in the solid state have also been studied.

Abstract:Three novel metal organic frameworks, namely, {[(Zn4O)(1/2)-(Zn3-OH)(1/2)L3/2O1/4(H2O)(5/2)(NO2)(1/2)] center dot (H2O)(4)}(n) (1), [Cd3L2(H2O)(4)] center dot (H2O)(9)center dot DMA}(n) (2), and {[Co(HL)(4,4'-bibp)]}(n) (3; H3L = 5'-carboxyl-[1,1':3',1 ''-terphenyl]-4,4 ''-dicarboxylic acid, 4,4'-bibp = 4,4'-bisimidazolylbiphenyl, DMA = N,N-dimethylacetamide), have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Compound 1 reveals an unusual 3D structure with {4 . 5(2)} {4 . 6(2)} (4(2) . 5(2) . 6(8) . 8(3)}{5(2) . 6}{5(3) . 6(5) . 8(2)} topology based on Zn4O and Zn-3-OH clusters. In compound 2, the H3L ligand assembles with Cd(NO3)(2) to a 3D framework with sqc27 {4 . 6(2)}(2){4(2) . 6(10) . 8(3)} topology. They are both three-dimensional frameworks containing one-dimensional channels. In compound 3, the HL 2 anion and 4,4'-bibp both act as bidentate ligands and coordinate to Co cations to form a three-dimensional 4-connected uninodal network. In addition, the thermal stabilities for 1-3 and luminescent properties for 1 and 2 are also discussed in detail.

The structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and further characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. 1 and 2 feature a similar three-fold interpenetrating network combined with interdigitation which extends the structure into a three-dimensional framework. 3 is a two-fold interpenetrating framework showing intralayer porosity and interdigitation. Compounds 1 and 3 represent a pair of supramolecular isomers where structural motifs and different interpenetration modes exist; compounds 4 and 5 are isostructural and display the same three-fold interpenetrating framework where two types of interlaced triple-stranded helices A and B can be found. The triple-stranded helices with opposite chirality for each type are distributed in adjacent layers. Compound 6 exhibiting a unique simultaneous threading fashion of adjacent polymeric motifs gives the novel (2D -> 3D) polythreaded array where coordinated NO3- anions act as the dangling ligands. Compound 7 is a 6-connected 3D self-penetrating network where right-and left-handed single-stranded helical chains (A(R) and A(L)) and interlaced triple-stranded helices (B-R and B-L) coexist. The luminescence properties of compounds 1-7 were also measured and discussed.

Abstract:Reported here are three previously unobserved acylamide ligands used in the preparation of metalorganic frameworks. Interestingly, in this work these acylamide ligands are formed in situ, rather than pre-prepared and three novel metal-organic frameworks are obtained. Their formulae are listed as follows: {Cd(H2O)(bpy)(ip)(2)Cd(bpy)(HL)(ip)(2)}(n) (1, H(2)ip = isophthalic acid, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, HL = 4-(pyridin-3-ylcarbamoyl)benzoic acid), {Zn(L1)(2)}(n) (2, HL1 = 4-(pyridin-3-ylcarbamoyl)-1-naphthoic acid), {Cd(L2)(bdc)(0.5)(L3)}(n) (3, H(2)bdc = terephthalic acid, L2 = N4,N4'-di(pyridin-3-yl)[1,19-biphenyl]-4,4'-dicarboxamide, HL3 = 4'-(pyridin-3-ylcarbamoyl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carboxylic acid). Their structures can be described as a 2D supramolecular net, a 3D CdSO4 net with two-fold interpenetration, and a 3D dia or alternatively alpha-Po net, respectively. Notably, in the cases of polymers 1 and 3, three distinct organic ligands coexist and coordinate with one metal center, where such concordant coordination competition around one metal center among three distinct organic ligands, to the best of our knowledge, is rare. Moreover, as observed in the literature, the spontaneous resolution producing chiral compounds from achiral source is also observed in polymer 2. Furthermore, we also explored their thermostability and luminescence properties.

Abstract:Three microporous coordination polymers, namely, [Co2L(DPE)]center dot 2DMF center dot 5H(2)O (1), [Zn2L(DPE)]center dot 2.5DMF center dot 2H(2)O (2) and [Cd(H2L)]center dot 3DMF center dot 3.5H(2)O (3), were solvothermally prepared in the presence of the flexible tetrahedral carboxylate ligand tetrakis[(4-carboxyphenyl)oxamethyl] methane acid (H4L) and a secondary bidentate linker (E)-1,2-di(pyridin-4-yl) ethane (DPE). Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and possess a 2-fold interpenetrating (4,4)-pts network. Compound 3 has a 3D structure with a uninodal 4-connected {4.8(5)} topology. All the three compounds consist of large solvent-accessible voids, but only compounds 1 and 2 possess permanent porosity as confirmed by N-2, CO2 and CH4 gas adsorption measurements. In addition, compounds 2 and 3 exhibited strong photoluminescent emissions at room temperature with a peak at 495 and 440 nm, respectively, owing to a ligand-centered excited state. The emission intensities of 2 varied upon contact with different solvents or analytes.
Synthesis, Structures, and Properties of Two Three-Dimensional Metal-Organic Frameworks, Based on Concurrent Ligand Extension

Abstract:A tritopic carboxylate ligand, tris(4'-carboxybiphenyl)amine (L-H(3)), has been synthesized and applied in the construction of microporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Two novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), {[Zn(2)(L)(OH)]·2DMF·H(2)O}(∞) (1) and {[Cu(L-H)(DMA)]·DMA·2H(2)O}(∞) (2), have been constructed out of L-H(3), Zn(2+), and Cu(2+), respectively. 1 has a 2-fold interpenetrating three-dimensional framework formed by L connectors and the [Zn(2)(CO(2))(3)] secondary building units (SBUs). As for 1, it is worth pointing out that one μ(2)-OH group links two Zn atoms between two neighboring SBUs to produce interesting Zn-O-Zn zigzag chains in the structure. 2 has a two-dimensional grid sheet formed by L-H connectors and the typical paddle-wheel [Cu(2)(CO(2))(4)] SBUs. Two-dimensional (2D) sheets nest with each other, which finally forms a three-dimensional (3D) nested framework. Two MOFs are characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, single-crystal and elemental analyses, and powder X-ray diffraction methods. Framework 1' exhibits high permanent porosity (Langmuir surface area = 848 m(2)/g), high thermal stability (up to 450 °C), highly active properties for Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction, as well as the potential application for the CO(2) gas storage and luminescent material. The catalytic results reveal that 2' is indeed an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for olefin epoxidation reactions.
Heterogeneity Within a Mesoporous Metal-Organic Framework with Three Distinct Metal-Containing Building Units.

Abstract:Materials built from multiple constituents have revealed emerging properties that are beyond linear integration of those from single components. We report a mesoporous metal-organic framework made from three geometrically distinct metal-containing secondary building units (SBUs) as a result of topological induction. The combinations of the Cu-based triangular, Zn-based octahedral, and Zn-based square pyramidal SBUs have created four types of cages in the network, despite that only one organic linker pyrazolecarboxylate was used. The longest distance for molecules maneuvering inside the largest cage is 5.2 nm. Furthermore, the complex and diversified pore environments allow the installation of various new functionalities in the framework as well as the expedited Ag nanoparticle formation in the pores. As presented in the molecule movement diagram, the crystal has provided specific arrangements of cages and apertures with distinct chemical features for guests transporting between the pores.

Even though the compositions of 4-6 are almost same, they generate different structures. Compound 4 shows a 2D -> 3D framework with parallel polycatenation of undulated square layers. Compound 5 reveals 3-fold interpenetrating 3D frameworks with {4.6(2)}{4(3).6(7)} crs topology. Compound 6 shows a 4-fold interpenetrating 3D metal-organic polyrotaxane framework. In addition, photophysical properties of 1-3 and the TPPA ligand in the solid state have also been studied.

Abstract:An investigation into the molecular tectonics of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is reported on the basis of N-donor ligand modulated polynuclear zinc clusters and different aromatic polycarboxylic ligands. A series of three-dimensional (3D) coordination frameworks, [Zn2(BDC)1.5(L)(OH)]·H2O (1), [Zn2(BOABA)(L)(OH)]·2H2O (2), [Zn2(BOABA)(L)(OH)]·4H2O (3), [Zn3(BTC)2(OH)]·0.25H2O·[N(C4H9)4] (4) and [Zn2(BTEC)0.5(L)(OH)2] (5), were synthesized by self-assembly of zinc ions with a new N-donor ligand 4,5-diazafluoren-9-oxime (L) and the aromatic polycarboxylic ligands 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (H2BDC), 3,5-bis-oxyacetate-benzoic acid (H3BOABA), 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC), and 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (H4BTEC). Compound 1 exhibits a twofold interpenetrated α-polonium-type network based on tetranuclear Zn clusters as six-connected vertices and BDC ligands as linkers. Compound 2 also consists of tetranuclear units, it shows a (3,6)-connected rutile network, where tetranuclear zinc clusters act as six-connected nodes and BOABA ligands act as three-connected nodes. Compound 3 is an isomer of compound 2, due to the different configuration of tetranuclear zinc, it displays a novel (3,6)-connected network with a complex (4·62)2(42·69·84) topology. In 4, the connection between the trinuclear zinc clusters and the BTC ligands results in an infinite 3D (3,6)-connected network with point symbol (4·62)(63)(4·611·83). Compound 5 constitutes a lvt net, which is built from tetranuclear clusters and BTEC as four-connected nodes, respectively. The results indicate that various polynuclear zinc clusters are modulated by L ligands combining with Zn atoms via chelation or monodentate coordination, or acting as a structure-directing agent. Meanwhile, aromatic multicarboxylic acids also play important roles in the construction of the compounds with various structures.

Abstract:Two novel metal-organic frameworks [Cd2(hdb)2(1,4-ndc)2]n (1) and [Ni3(Hhdb)2(1,4-ndc)4(H2O)2]n (2) have been synthesized under the similar hydrothermal conditions (hdb=1,1′-(1,6-hexanediyl)bis(imidazole) and 1,4-ndc=1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylate). The polymers (1) and (2) show 2D parallel interpenetration and 3D CsCl-type topology, respectively, which are mainly affected by the differences of the metal centers.

Abstract:Through use of an irregular pentacarboxylate ligand, 2,2'-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)diterephthalic acid (H4L), two Cu(II)-based metal-organic frameworks, {[(Me2NH2)(0.5)][Cu-0.75(L)(0.5)(DMA)(0.375)]center dot H2O}(n) (1) and {[Cu-4(L)(2)(H2O)(4)]center dot 4DMF center dot 8H(2)O}(n) (2), have been synthesized. A structural analysis demonstrates that 1 is a 2D layer and 2 shows a 3D framework, which exhibit hopeful possibilities for the selective separations of C2H2/CH4 and CO2/CH4. To enhance the adsorption properties, 5-amino-1H-tetrazole (HAT) has been introduced in the synthesis system, and a new framework, {[Cu-4(L)(2)(ATZ)(2)(H2O)]center dot 5DMF center dot 5H(2)O}(n) (3), has been obtained. 3 is a 3D framework. Especially, 3 is constructed from multiple SBUs and displays an unusual (3,4,6)-connected topology. Furthermore, especially 3 performs better than 1 and 2 in terms of uptake capacity as well as adsorption selectivity, which might be ascribed to the more proper pore space of 3.

Abstract:New tetracarboxylate ligands with dihydroxy (L-1) and crown ether functionalities (L-2) have been synthesized and treated with Cull and Zn-II ions to generate three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the compositions of [Cu-2(L-1)(H2O)(2)]center dot 14DMF center dot 10H(2)O, 5, [Cu-2(L-2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 12DMF, 6, [Zn-6(mu(4)-O)(L-1)(2)(L-1-H-2)center dot 35DMF center dot 27H(2)O, 7, and [Zn3Na2(L-2)(2)(DMF)(2)]center dot 7DMF center dot 14H(2)O, 8. The four compounds show different framework structures with different connectivities. Compound 5 exhibits the PtS topology whereas compound 6 has a [6(4).8(2)](3)[6(6)] topology. Compound 7 adopts a new [4.6(5)] [4(2).6(8)][4(4).6(2)][4(5).6][4(8).6(10).8(3)] topology while compound 8 exhibits the Flu topology. The porosity and H-2 uptake were studied by gas sorption experiments and grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations. Compound 5 shows a high H2 uptake of up to 1.11 wt % at 77 K.

Abstract:Three metal-organic frameworks, [Mn(bpydc)]center dot DMA (JLU-Liu11), [Co(bpydc)DMSO]center dot(DMSO)(H2O) (JLU-Liu12) and [Co(bpydc)H2O]center dot H2O (JLU-Liu13), were solvothermally synthesized by reacting a T-shaped linker, 2,2'-bipyridyl-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid (H(2)bpydc) ligand with transition metals. These compounds exhibit three different types of structures. In JLU-Liu11, two oxygen atoms and two nitrogen atoms of the H(2)bpydc ligand coordinate to five manganese centers to form an ant net, and JLU-Liu11 displays two types of helical chains with opposite helical directions, which are composed of vertex-sharing 4-rings propagating along the [100] direction. In JLU-Liu12, H(2)bpydc ligands coordinate to cobalt centers to form a new (3,3)-connected net with two different tiles (6.12(4)) and (6(2).12(6)). In JLU-Liu13, H(2)bpydc ligands coordinate to cobalt centers to form a two-dimensional layer which then interacts with terminal water molecules via hydrogen bonds to construct a three-dimensional supramolecular structure, JLU-Liu13 shows exceptional stability in water. Additionally, the magnetic properties of all the compounds were studied.
