Abstract:Skin effect that all eigenmodes within a frequency range become edge states is dictated by the topological properties of complex eigenvalues unique in non-Hermitian systems. The prevailing attempts to realize such a fascinating effect are confined to either onedimensional or nonreciprocal systems exhibiting asymmetric couplings. Here, inspired by a recent model Hamiltonian theory, we propose a realistic reciprocal two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal (PhC) system that shows the desired skin effect. Specifically, we establish a routine for designing such non-Hermitian systems via revealing the inherent connections between the non-trivial eigenvalue topology of order-2 exceptional points (EPs) and the skin effects. Guided by the proposed strategy, we successfully design a 2D PhC that possesses the EPs with nonzero eigenvalue winding numbers. The spectral area along a specific wavevector direction is then formed by leveraging the symmetry of the macroscopic geometry and the unit cell. The projected-band-structure calculations are performed to demonstrate that the desired skin effect exists at the specific crystalline interfaces. We finally employ time-domain simulations to vividly illustrate this phenomenon by exciting a pulse at the center of a finitesized PhC. Our results form a solid basis for further experimental confirmations and applications of the skin effect.
Non-Hermitian skin effect and delocalized edge states in photonic crystals with anomalous parity-time symmetry

Abstract:Non-Hermitian skin effect denotes the exponential localization of a large number of eigen-states in a non-Hermitian lattice under open boundary conditions. Such a non-Hermiticity-induced skin effect can offset the penetration depth of in-gap edge states, leading to counterintuitive delocalized edge modes, which have not been studied in a realistic photonic system such as photonic crystals. Here, we analytically reveal the non-Hermitian skin effect and the delocalized edge states in Maxwell's equations for non-Hermitian chiral photonic crystals with anomalous parity-time symmetry. Remarkably, we rigorously prove that the penetration depth of the edge states is inversely proportional to the frequency and the real part of the chirality. Our findings pave a way towards exploring novel non-Hermitian phenomena and applications in continuous Maxwell's equations.

Abstract:With the development of non-Hermitian physics, the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) has attracted much attention. Existing research highlights the critical roles of the periodic boundary condition (PBC) spectrum, lattice symmetry, and macroscopic symmetry of the lattice in relation to the geometry-dependent skin effect (GDSE). However, the impact of macroscopic edge geometry is frequently neglected. We find that the GDSE is highly sensitive to the edge and cannot be simply determined by the symmetries. Specifically, the GDSE can emerge at trivial interfaces of rhombus photonic crystals (PhCs) with zigzag edge and bearded edge. Furthermore, we analyze the underlying mechanisms from the perspective of point-gap topology. This work underscores important, yet frequently overlooked, aspects in two-dimensional (2D) reciprocal PhC systems and can be used to enhance design flexibility, allowing the NHSE to have better applications in areas such as lasers and highly sensitive sensors.

Recent theoretical works reveal that the topologically nontrivial exceptional points can give rise to the non-Hermitian skin effect, which is geometry-dependent. However, this kind of novel correspondence between the exceptional points and skin effect remains to be confirmed by experiments. Here, we corroborate the correspondence in a non-Hermitian phononic crystal. The exceptional points connected by the bulk Fermi arcs, and the skin effects with the geometry dependence, are evidenced in simulations and experiments. Our work, building an experimental bridge between the exceptional points and skin effect and uncovering the unconventional geometry-dependent skin effect, expands a horizon in non-Hermitian physics.

Abstract:We show that two-dimensional non-Hermitian photonic crystals made of lossy material can exhibit non-trivial point gap topology in terms of topological winding in its complex frequency band structure. Such crystals can be either made of lossy isotropic media which is reciprocal, or lossy magneto-optical media which is non-reciprocal. We discuss the effects of reciprocity on the properties of the point gap topology. We also show that such a non-trivial point gap topology leads to non-Hermitian skin effect when the photonic crystal is truncated. In contrast to most previous studies on point gap topology which used tight-binding models, our work indicates that such non-Hermitian topology can studied in photonic crystals, which represent a more realistic system that has technological significance.

Abstract:In the area of non-Hermitian physics, there has been increasing research interest in photonics. Recently, this interest has expanded to topological systems in which symmetry and topology intertwine with non-Hermiticity, giving rise to many intriguing physical effects. One of the major tasks in exploring topological systems is unveiling the bulk-boundary correspondence in the presence of non-Hermiticity. Several proposals have been put forward in this vein, including non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence and the non-Hermitian skin effect. However, its practical realization has remained elusive thus far. In this paper, we demonstrate a feasible design of a one-dimensional non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model based on photonic coupled resonant optical waveguides (CROWs). We show that non-Hermitian asymmetric coupling can be realized by the judicious design of optical gain and loss elements into unidirectional coupling link rings. The phase transition points of a technically achievable CROW open chain are different from those of the periodic boundary, thus revealing the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence. Moreover, the field distribution is found to be exponentially localized at the ends of an open-boundary chain, which demonstrates the non-Hermitian skin effect. Our results underpin the fundamental importance as well as potential applications in various optical devices such as optical couplers, beam splitters, lasers, optical trapping, etc.

Abstract:We explore absorbing open-boundary modes in non-Hermitian photonic systems. The modes have a continuum spectrum in the infinite system-size limit and can exhibit the non-Hermitian skin effect. In contrast to the conventional non-Hermitian skin modes under the fixed-end open-boundary condition, the modes concerned exhibit a strongly size-dependent spectrum that gradually converges to the non-Bloch-band dispersion. The modes correspond to the poles of the $S$ matrix, and are closely related to the lasing. We demonstrate these properties in a two-dimensional non-Hermitian photonic crystal with gain having a point-(pseudo)gap topology.

Abstract:Photonic crystals including gain and loss materials show numerous intriguing features than the ordinary photonic crystals. In this work, using the full wave simulation, we numerically investigate the photonic crystals with gain and loss which are satisfying the Parity-Time symmetry condition to reveal the effect of Parity-Time symmetry on the optical properties of photonic crystals, including the Exceptional Point (EP), distribution of electromagnetic fields and edge states. This work reveals novel mechanism of coexistence and competition between topological states and non-Hermiticity in all-dielectric photonic crystals and provides innovative understanding of non-Hermiticity in topological photonic systems.

Abstract:The introduction of non-Hermiticity into topological systems has led to a series of novel physical phenomena and produced application prospects. Here, we combine non-Hermitian and topological photonic systems based on a one-dimensional extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, which is composed of the optically coupled cavity array. We found that single on-site gain and loss do not induce the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) in this model. Once the complex next-nearest-neighbor coupling is introduced, which is similar to asymmetric coupling, NHSE exists in the system. Adjusting the parameters of the system, we noted that the behavior of in-gap topological edge modes depends on the competition between non-Hermiticity and band topology. NHSE is featured with two edge modes localized at one end of the array, whereas the latter is characterized by two edge modes distributed at the two ends of the array. In addition, we reveal the conditions is that a system with gain and loss produces the non-Hermitian skin effect. Our research enriches the integration of non-Hermitian and topological photonics.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) has led to interesting physics and sophisticated applications beyond the conventional framework. However, NHSE studies have been limited to an individual dimension due to the difficulty of constructing nonreciprocal coupling in higher-dimensional systems. With the concept of synthetic dimension, we realize two-dimensional (2D) NHSE in a synthetic photonic lattice. The synthetic photonic lattice is composed of a spatial dimension and a synthetic frequency dimension, which is constructed by introducing gain and loss and dynamically modulating the complex refractive index in a one-dimensional ring-resonator array. In the synthetic 2D NHSE system, we can manipulate the spatial position and frequency mode of the light in real time, thus enabling programmable light propagation and frequency conversion. Specifically, the incident light can be localized in the spatial dimension and the frequency dimension simultaneously, leading to second-order corner modes in the synthetic 2D NHSE lattice. Besides, the 2D NHSE system exhibits an excellent robustness for the disorder and point defect in the lattice. This work generalizes the non-Hermitian skin effect in synthetic dimension to control the light in different dimensions, which shows great promise for potential applications in on-chip light manipulation, frequency synthesis, and information processing.

Abstract:Applied Physics Letters, Volume 121, Issue 2, July 2022. Non-Hermitian systems have gained a great deal of interest in various wave problems due their ability of exhibiting unprecedented phenomena such as invisibility, cloaking, enhanced sensing, or the skin effect. The latter manifests itself by the localization of all bulk modes in a specific frequency range at a given boundary, with an unconventional bulk-boundary correspondence. In this work, we propose to realize the skin effect for flexural waves in a non-Hermitian piezoelectric phononic beam with feedback control between a sensor and an actuator in each unit cell. By implementing a non-Hermitian parameter, effective gain and loss can be achieved in the phononic beam characterized by complex eigen frequencies, and non-reciprocal pass bands are obtained. We highlight that the split point separating the gain and loss areas can occur not only at the edges of the Brillouin zones but also inside the same Brillouin zone. We further analyze the influence of the geometric and non-Hermitian parameters on the complex dispersions and the split point. The topology of the complex bands is characterized by the winding number, which supports the skin effect together with the non-reciprocity. The localization degree of the skin mode manifested by the enhanced beam's vibration energy at one boundary is related to the strength of the non-reciprocity, and the skin mode can be always excited regardless of the source position. Our results provide a potential platform to introduce non-Hermiticity into phononic or metamaterial systems with novel functions for elastic waves such as topological insulators, vibration attenuation or amplification, and energy harvesting.

Exciton polariton critical non-Hermitian skin effect with spin-momentum-locked gains

Abstract:The critical skin effect, an intriguing phenomenon in non-Hermitian systems, displays sensitivity to system size and manifests distinct dynamical behaviors. In this work, we propose a novel scheme to achieve the critical non-Hermitian skin effect of exciton polaritons in an elongated microcavity system. We show that by utilising longitudinal-transverse spin splitting and spin-momentum-locked gain, a critical non-Hermitian skin effect can be achieved in a continuous system without the need of an underlying lattice. We find that a phase transition can be induced by changing the cavity detuning with respect to the exciton energy. We identify a measurable order parameter associated with this phase transition and demonstrate the corresponding critical behavior. Our work offers a flexible approach to manipulate non-Hermitian phases of exciton polaritons, thereby expanding the potential applications of polaritonic devices.

Abstract:Recent studies of non-Hermitian periodic lattices unveiled the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE), in which the bulk modes under the periodic boundary conditions (PBC) become skin modes under open boundary conditions. The NHSE is a topological effect owing to the nontrivial spectral winding, and such spectral behaviors appear naturally in nonreciprocal systems. Hence prevailing approaches rely on nonreciprocity to achieve the NHSE. Here, we report the experimental realization of the geometrydependent skin effect in a two-dimensional reciprocal system, in which the skin effect occurs only at boundaries whose macroscopic symmetry mismatches with the lattice symmetry. The role of spectral reciprocity and symmetry is revealed by connecting reflective channels at given boundaries with the spectral topology of the PBC spectrum. Our work highlights the vital role of reciprocity, symmetry, and macroscopic geometry on the NHSE in dimensionality larger than one and opens new routes for wave structuring using non-Hermitian effects.

Abstract:Crystal symmetries play an essential role in band structures of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. In this paper, we propose a non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) enforced by nonsymmorphic symmetries. We show that the NHSE inevitably occurs if a two-dimensional non-Hermitian system satisfies conditions derived from the nonsymmorphic symmetry of the doubled Hermitian Hamiltonian. This NHSE occurs in symmetry classes with and without time-reversal symmetry. The NHSE enforced by nonsymmorphic symmetries always occurs simultaneously with the closing of the point gap at zero energy. We also show that such a NHSE can occur in specific three-dimensional space groups with nonsymmorphic symmetries.

Abstract:The non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) refers to that an extensive number of eigenstates of a non-Hermitian system are localized in open boundaries. Here we predict a universal phenomenon that with local particle-hole(-like) symmetry (PHS) the skin modes must be equally distributed on different boundaries, manifesting a novel nonlocalization of the local PHS, which is unique to non-Hermitian systems. We develop a generic theory for the emergent nonlocal symmetry-protected NHSE by connecting the non-Hermitian system to an extended Hermitian Hamiltonian in a quadruplicate Hilbert space, which maps the skin modes to the topological zero modes and the PHS to an emergent nonlocal symmetry in the perspective of many body physics. The predicted NHSE is robust against perturbations. We propose optical Raman lattice models to observe the predicted phenomena in all physical dimensions, which are accessible with cold-atom experiments.

Abstract:We discuss a generalization of the non-Hermitian skin effect to finite-size photonic structures with neither gain nor loss in the bulk and purely real energy spectrum under periodic boundary conditions (PBC). We show that such systems can still have significant portions of eigenmodes concentrated at the edges and that this edge concentration can be linked to the non-trivial point-gap topology of the size-dependent regularized PBC spectrum, accounting for the radiative losses. As an example, we consider the chiral waveguide quantum electrodynamics platform with an array of atoms coupled to the waveguide. The proposed mesoscopic analogue of the non-Hermitian skin effect could be potentially applied to other seemingly lossless photonic structures, such as chiral resonant all-dielectric metamaterials.

Abstract:As a distinctive feature unique to non-Hermitian systems, non-Hermitian skin effect displays fruitful exotic phenomena in one or higher dimensions, especially when conventional topological phases are involved. Among them, hybrid skin-topological effect is theoretically proposed recently, which exhibits anomalous localization of topological boundary states at lower-dimensional boundaries accompanied by extended bulk states. Here we experimentally realize the hybrid skin-topological effect in a non-Hermitian phononic crystal. The phononic crystal, before tuning to be non-Hermitian, is an ideal acoustic realization of the Kane-Mele model, which hosts gapless helical edge states at the boundaries. By introducing a staggered distribution of loss, the spin-dependent edge modes pile up to opposite corners, leading to a direct observation of the spin-dependent hybrid skin-topological effect. Our work highlights the interplay between topology and non-Hermiticity and opens new routes to non-Hermitian wave manipulations.
