Abstract:In the area of non-Hermitian physics, there has been increasing research interest in photonics. Recently, this interest has expanded to topological systems in which symmetry and topology intertwine with non-Hermiticity, giving rise to many intriguing physical effects. One of the major tasks in exploring topological systems is unveiling the bulk-boundary correspondence in the presence of non-Hermiticity. Several proposals have been put forward in this vein, including non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence and the non-Hermitian skin effect. However, its practical realization has remained elusive thus far. In this paper, we demonstrate a feasible design of a one-dimensional non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model based on photonic coupled resonant optical waveguides (CROWs). We show that non-Hermitian asymmetric coupling can be realized by the judicious design of optical gain and loss elements into unidirectional coupling link rings. The phase transition points of a technically achievable CROW open chain are different from those of the periodic boundary, thus revealing the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence. Moreover, the field distribution is found to be exponentially localized at the ends of an open-boundary chain, which demonstrates the non-Hermitian skin effect. Our results underpin the fundamental importance as well as potential applications in various optical devices such as optical couplers, beam splitters, lasers, optical trapping, etc.

Abstract:Abstract The recently discovered non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) manifests the breakdown of current classification of topological phases in energy-nonconservative systems, and necessitates the introduction of non-Hermitian band topology. So far, all NHSE observations are based on one type of non-Hermitian band topology, in which the complex energy spectrum winds along a closed loop. As recently characterized along a synthetic dimension on a photonic platform, non-Hermitian band topology can exhibit almost arbitrary windings in momentum space, but their actual phenomena in real physical systems remain unclear. Here, we report the experimental realization of NHSE in a one-dimensional (1D) non-reciprocal acoustic crystal. With direct acoustic measurement, we demonstrate that a twisted winding, whose topology consists of two oppositely oriented loops in contact rather than a single loop, will dramatically change the NHSE, following previous predictions of unique features such as the bipolar localization and the Bloch point for a Bloch-wave-like extended state. This work reveals previously unnoticed features of NHSE, and provides the observation of physical phenomena originating from complex non-Hermitian winding topology.

Abstract:This article reviews recent developments in the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE), particularly on its rich interplay with topology. The review starts off with a pedagogical introduction on the modified bulk-boundary correspondence, the synergy and hybridization of NHSE and band topology in higher dimensions, as well as, the associated topology on the complex energy plane such as spectral winding topology and spectral graph topology. Following which, emerging topics are introduced such as non-Hermitian criticality, dynamical NHSE phenomena, and the manifestation of NHSE beyond the traditional linear non-interacting crystal lattices, particularly its interplay with quantum many-body interactions. Finally, we survey the recent demonstrations and experimental proposals of NHSE.

Abstract:The introduction of non-Hermiticity into topological systems has led to a series of novel physical phenomena and produced application prospects. Here, we combine non-Hermitian and topological photonic systems based on a one-dimensional extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, which is composed of the optically coupled cavity array. We found that single on-site gain and loss do not induce the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) in this model. Once the complex next-nearest-neighbor coupling is introduced, which is similar to asymmetric coupling, NHSE exists in the system. Adjusting the parameters of the system, we noted that the behavior of in-gap topological edge modes depends on the competition between non-Hermiticity and band topology. NHSE is featured with two edge modes localized at one end of the array, whereas the latter is characterized by two edge modes distributed at the two ends of the array. In addition, we reveal the conditions is that a system with gain and loss produces the non-Hermitian skin effect. Our research enriches the integration of non-Hermitian and topological photonics.

Abstract:Non-Hermiticity is revolutionizing the common understanding in the Hermitian scope by interfacing with topological physics. A single non-Hermitian band can host nontrivial topology that is defined over the nonzero windings of the system's eigenvalues, but not the eigenvectors, as opposed to the Hermitian topological systems. This unique non-Hermitian band topology is responsible for the intriguing non-Hermitian skin effect. Here, we show that the band topology of non-Hermitian one-band models can experience multiple phase transitions. Each transition is identified by a change of the eigenvalue winding. Such an interesting phenomenon is enabled by strategically manipulating the long-range couplings. Associated with the multiple phase transitions, the non-Hermitian skin effect exhibits anomalous behaviors, i.e., in different phases, the skin modes take on different forms of wave localizations. At the transition points, the skin modes evolve into Bloch-wavelike extended states, as if the Hermiticity is restored. For demonstration, we consider a modified Hatano-Nelson model with nonrecip-rocal next-nearest neighbor couplings. Therein, two phase transitions are identified, corresponding to a stationary and a dynamic one (with respect to the reciprocal nearest-neighbor coupling). Exact analytical derivations are performed to analyze the phase transitions and the associated anomalous non-Hermitian skin effect, which show consistency with the numerical results based on the generalized Brillouin zone method. Our work reveals rich non-Hermitian topological physics in one-band systems, which are considered to be topologically trivial in Hermitian systems. By further showing the anomalous non-Hermitian skin effect, intriguing wave manipulations may inspire experiments in classical realms such as photonics and phononics where versatile non-Hermitian controls are feasible.

Abstract:We show that two-dimensional non-Hermitian photonic crystals made of lossy material can exhibit non-trivial point gap topology in terms of topological winding in its complex frequency band structure. Such crystals can be either made of lossy isotropic media which is reciprocal, or lossy magneto-optical media which is non-reciprocal. We discuss the effects of reciprocity on the properties of the point gap topology. We also show that such a non-trivial point gap topology leads to non-Hermitian skin effect when the photonic crystal is truncated. In contrast to most previous studies on point gap topology which used tight-binding models, our work indicates that such non-Hermitian topology can studied in photonic crystals, which represent a more realistic system that has technological significance.

Abstract:The non-Hermitian skin effect is one of the most striking features in non-Hermitian physics. It reveals a novel phenomenon in a non-Hermitian system that the bulk wave function and energy spectrum are sensitively dependent on the boundary conditions. The concept of generalized Brillouin zones has been proposed to characterize bulk wave functions in such systems . Based on generalized Brillouin zones, non-Bloch topological invariants can reconstruct the non-Hermitian bulk-edge correspondence. Previous discussion of the non-Hermitian skin effect mainly focused on open boundary conditions, and the calculation of generalized Brillouin zones needs to be reconsidered under domain-wall boundary conditions. The paper introduces the related researches of the non-Hermitian skin effect in domain-wall systems, including the general form of the generalized Brillouin zone equation in a one-dimensional single-band model, non-Bloch topological invariants in non-Hermitian SSH (Su-Schieffer-Heeger) model, and the experimental realization of the non-Hermitian skin effect in one-dimensional quantum walk system.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems can exhibit extraordinary sensitivity to boundary conditions. Given that topological boundary modes and non-Hermitian skin effects can either coexist or individually appear in non-Hermitian systems, it is of great value to present a comprehensive non-Hermitian phase diagram, for further flexible control in realistic non-Hermitian systems. Here, we reveal four-fold non-Hermitian phase transitions at a mathematically level, where phase I exhibits only topological boundary modes, phase II displays both topological boundary modes and skin modes, phase III exhibits only skin modes, and phase IV cannot manifest any boundary modes. By deriving non-Hermitian winding numbers, the existence or non-existence condition of topological boundary modes are analytically expressed, consistent with the numerical results obtained through the iterative Green's function method. Combining with the study on non-Hermitian skin effects, we rigorously establish the four-fold phase diagram. We also design an array of coupled resonator optical waveguides. The introduction of non-Hermiticity in the photonic structure induces a phenomenon similar to band inversion in topological insulators, indicating the presence of topological boundary modes in the photonic bands.

Abstract:We discuss a generalization of the non-Hermitian skin effect to finite-size photonic structures with neither gain nor loss in the bulk and purely real energy spectrum under periodic boundary conditions (PBC). We show that such systems can still have significant portions of eigenmodes concentrated at the edges and that this edge concentration can be linked to the non-trivial point-gap topology of the size-dependent regularized PBC spectrum, accounting for the radiative losses. As an example, we consider the chiral waveguide quantum electrodynamics platform with an array of atoms coupled to the waveguide. The proposed mesoscopic analogue of the non-Hermitian skin effect could be potentially applied to other seemingly lossless photonic structures, such as chiral resonant all-dielectric metamaterials.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian skin effects (NHSEs) enrich the traditional band theories and give rise to unique non-Hermitian topological properties. Here, we reveal a different type of NHSE, termed the V-shaped NHSE, and explore an on-chip optical ring resonator platform to demonstrate the NHSE in telecommunication wavelength. By tuning the hopping and loss modulation, we work out a phase diagram that reveals the phase transition of the NHSE. Besides the conventional NHSE and the frequency-dependent bipolar NHSE, another type of NHSE is observed featuring an interesting V shape in its special skin states distribution. We further design a silicon ring resonator array with loss-assisted antiresonating coupling as the link resonators to demonstrate the nontrivial NHSE. The simulations show that one can tune the number of states piled up at different ends by switching the NHSE from conventional, bipolar to V-shaped types continuously. Our work enriches the NHSE phase transitions and implies potential in on-chip light modulation by the NHSE.
Incoherent non-Hermitian skin effect in photonic quantum walks

Abstract:The non-Hermitian skin effect describes the concentration of an extensive number of eigenstates near the boundaries of certain dissipative systems. This phenomenon has raised a huge interest in different areas of physics, including photonics, deeply expanding our understanding of non-Hermitian systems and opening up new avenues in both fundamental and applied aspects of topological phenomena. The skin effect has been associated to a nontrivial point-gap spectral topology and has been experimentally demonstrated in a variety of synthetic matter systems, including photonic lattices. In most of physical models exhibiting the non-Hermitian skin effect full or partial wave coherence is generally assumed. Here we push the concept of skin effect into the fully incoherent regime and show that rather generally (but not universally) the non-Hermitian skin effect persists under dephasing dynamics. The results are illustrated by considering incoherent light dynamics in non-Hermitian photonic quantum walks.

Abstract:The past decades have witnessed the flourishing of non-Hermitian physics in non-conservative systems, leading to unprecedented phenomena of unidirectional invisibility, enhanced sensitivity and more recently the novel topological features such as bulk Fermi arcs. Among them, growing efforts have been invested to an intriguing phenomenon, known as the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE). Here, we review the recent progress in this emerging field. By starting from the one-dimensional (1D) case, the fundamental concepts of NHSE, its minimal model, the physical meanings and consequences are elaborated in details. In particular, we discuss the NHSE enriched by lattice symmetries, which gives rise to unique non-Hermitian topological properties with revised bulk-boundary correspondence (BBC) and new definitions of topological invariants. Then we extend the discussions to two and higher dimensions, where dimensional surprises enable even more versatile NHSE phenomena. Extensions of NHSE assisted with extra degrees of freedom such as long-range coupling, pseudospins, magnetism, non-linearity and crystal defects are also reviewed. This is followed by the contemporary experimental progress for NHSE. Finally, we provide the outlooks to possible future directions and developments.
Manipulating Spectral Windings and Skin Modes through Nonconservative Couplings

Abstract:The discovery of the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) has revolutionized our understanding of wave propagation in non-Hermitian systems, highlighting unexpected localization effects beyond conventional theories. Here, we discover that NHSE, accompanied by multi-type spectral phases, can be induced by manipulating nonconservative couplings. By characterizing the spectrum through the windings of the energy bands, we demonstrate that band structures with identical, opposite, and even twisted windings can be achieved. These inequivalent types of spectra originate from the multi-channel interference resulting from the interplay between conservative and nonconservative couplings. Associated with the multi-type spectra, unipolar and bipolar NHSE with different eigenmode localizations can be observed. Additionally, our findings link the nonreciprocal transmission properties of the system to multiple spectral phases, indicating a connection with the skin modes. This work paves new pathways for investigating non-Hermitian topological effects and manipulating nonreciprocal energy flow.

Abstract:The concept of non-Hermiticity has expanded the understanding of band topology leading to the emergence of counter-intuitive phenomena. One example is the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE), which involves the concentration of eigenstates at the boundary. However, despite the potential insights that can be gained from high-dimensional non-Hermitian quantum systems in areas like curved space, high-order topological phases, and black holes, the realization of this effect in high dimensions remains unexplored. Here, we create a two-dimensional (2D) non-Hermitian topological band for ultracold fermions in spin-orbit-coupled optical lattices with tunable dissipation, which exhibits the NHSE. We first experimentally demonstrate pronounced nonzero spectral winding numbers in the complex energy plane with non-zero dissipation, which establishes the existence of 2D skin effect. Further, we observe the real-space dynamical signature of NHSE in real space by monitoring the center of mass motion of atoms. Finally, we also demonstrate that a pair of exceptional points (EPs) are created in the momentum space, connected by an open-ended bulk Fermi arc, in contrast to closed loops found in Hermitian systems. The associated EPs emerge and shift with increasing dissipation, leading to the formation of the Fermi arc. Our work sets the stage for further investigation into simulating non-Hermitian physics in high dimensions and paves the way for understanding the interplay of quantum statistics with NHSE.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian skin effect denotes the exponential localization of a large number of eigen-states in a non-Hermitian lattice under open boundary conditions. Such a non-Hermiticity-induced skin effect can offset the penetration depth of in-gap edge states, leading to counterintuitive delocalized edge modes, which have not been studied in a realistic photonic system such as photonic crystals. Here, we analytically reveal the non-Hermitian skin effect and the delocalized edge states in Maxwell's equations for non-Hermitian chiral photonic crystals with anomalous parity-time symmetry. Remarkably, we rigorously prove that the penetration depth of the edge states is inversely proportional to the frequency and the real part of the chirality. Our findings pave a way towards exploring novel non-Hermitian phenomena and applications in continuous Maxwell's equations.

Abstract:We study the skin effect in a one-dimensional system of finitely many subwavelength resonators with a non-Hermitian imaginary gauge potential. Using Toeplitz matrix theory, we prove the condensation of bulk eigenmodes at one of the edges of the system. By introducing a generalised (complex) Brillouin zone, we can compute spectral bands of the associated infinitely periodic structure and prove that this is the limit of the spectra of the finite structures with arbitrarily large size. Finally, we contrast the non-Hermitian systems with imaginary gauge potentials considered here with systems where the non-Hermiticity arises due to complex material parameters, showing that the two systems are fundamentally distinct.

Abstract:Abstract Beyond the scope of Hermitian physics, non-Hermiticity fundamentally changes the topological band theory, leading to interesting phenomena, e.g., non-Hermitian skin effect, as confirmed in one-dimensional systems. However, in higher dimensions, these effects remain elusive. Here, we demonstrate the spin-polarized, higher-order non-Hermitian skin effect in two-dimensional acoustic higher-order topological insulators. We find that non-Hermiticity drives wave localizations toward opposite edges upon different spin polarizations. More interestingly, for finite systems with both edges and corners, the higher-order non-Hermitian skin effect leads to wave localizations toward two opposite corners for all the bulk, edge and corner states in a spin-dependent manner. We further show that such a skin effect enables rich wave manipulation by configuring the non-Hermiticity. Our study reveals the intriguing interplay between higher-order topology and non-Hermiticity, which is further enriched by the pseudospin degree of freedom, unveiling a horizon in the study of non-Hermitian physics.
