Abstract:Sorption plays an important role in controlling the fate and behaviour of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in soils. However, there is no consensus on the influence of key soil properties on sorption of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in the current literature. In particular, the effects of soil mineral components on sorption have not been fully investigated. In this study the sorption isotherms of PFOS under different electrolytes (Na+ and Ca2＋) was investigated using eight contrasting soils that varied in pH, total organic carbon (TOC) content, clay content and other physico-chemical properties. In addition the sorption behaviour of PFOS was studied at different pH values (3–9) and ionic strengths (0.03 and 0.3 M NaNO3) to determine the role of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions on PFOS sorption. The effects of possible co-contaminants, lead (Pb) (20.8 mg/L Pb2+) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC, 11.5 mg/L as humic acid) and perfluorooctanoic acid (114 μg/L PFOA) on sorption of PFOS were also investigated. A strongly significant linear relationship (p<0.01) between TOC and the amount of PFOS sorbed was observed irrespective of the background electrolyte index cation, Na+ or Ca2＋. The presence of DOC, and other common co-contaminants like PFOA, and Pb2+ in solution generally increased PFOS sorption by the soils. Sorption of PFOS at different ionic strengths and pH demonstrated that the sorption was dominated by hydrophobic interactions when the TOC content was high, but electrostatic interactions dominated at lower pH values and in soils with smaller TOC contents. This study demonstrates the role of both organic matter and surface chemical properties of soils as key factors influencing PFOS sorption. The use of multiple soil properties to explain the sorption is required.
Investigation on Thermal Characteristics of Novel Composite Sorbent with Carbon Coated Iron As Additive

Abstract:Carbon coated iron and expanded natural graphite are selected as the additives in developing novel consolidated composite strontium chloride, which is attempted to improve heat and mass transfer performance. Due to anisotropic characteristics, both disk and plate samples are investigated which are parallel and perpendicular to compression direction respectively. It is worth noting that thermal conductivity of composite sorbent increases with the increase of density and the decrease of mass ratio whereas permeability shows a reverse trend. Results demonstrate that the highest thermal conductivity of composite strontium chloride with carbon coated iron could reach 2.95 W m(-1) K-1, which is improved by 14 times when compared with granular salt. Permeability of composite sorbent ranges from 1.2 x 10(-9) m(2) to 4.5 x 10(-14) m(2) when density is in the range between 400 kg m(-1) and 600 kg m(-1). Sorption characteristic of composite sorbent with carbon coated iron is also investigated and compared with that not adding carbon coated iron. Under the condition of -10 degrees C evaporation temperature, sorption reaction rate of composite sorbent with carbon coated iron is better than that without carbon coated iron due to the improved mass transfer performance. Abstract:Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are chemically and thermally stable due to the presence of carbon-fluorine (C-F) bond in their molecular structures, hence have been previously formulated as firefighting in-gredients. During the firefighting process, however, owing to the high temperature, PFAS can be potentially degraded, particularly for PFAS precursors that contain non-C-F bonds, which is studied herein by exposing PFAS-contaminated soil in a muffle furnace oven. Different temperatures and time intervals are applied to the real soil sample to mimic the firing process and to evaluate the degradation and conversion of PFAS. This thermal treatment can not only degrade precursors (e.g. 6:2 fluorotelomer sulphonate), but also degrade perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCA, e.g. perfluorooctanoic acid PFOA) and perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSA, e.g. perfluorooctane sulfonate PFOS). The concentration dependence of the PFAS on temperature and time is fitted using a 2D Gaussian surface to simulate the complex thermal kinetic, and to compare with the traditional approach such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) (1D dependence on temperature only). The 2D simulation can directly visu-alise the thermal kinetic of individual or sum PFAS in the complex temperature-time plane, which depends on the sample background and particularly on the coexist PFAS precursors. Overall, this study provides a simple approach to monitor and optimise the thermal treatment of the PFAS-contaminated soil.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have concerned the public due to their worldwide distribution and the threat they pose to drinking water safety and human health. Temperature and DC field-induced electroosmotic flow (EOF) are powerful tools to regulate organic contaminant adsorption and control PFOS (as a typical PFAS) transport in porous media. However, the co-driven mechanisms of temperature–electrokinetic transport of contaminants are still unclear. Here, we investigated the synergistic mechanisms of temperature–electrokinetic co-driven PFOS adsorption on zeolite and activated carbon as model geo-adsorbents. We found that DC fields increased PFOS adsorption on activated carbon by up to 19.8%, while they decreased PFOS adsorption on zeolite by up to 21.4%. Increasing the temperature decreased the adsorption of PFOS by activated carbon and zeolite. The temperature and electrokinetic synergistically drive EOF velocity to control PFOS adsorption. Synergistic mechanisms of temperature–electrokinetic regulated kinetic and temperature-regulated thermodynamic (the Gibbs free energy change ΔG) and kinetic (liquid viscosity) under various temperatures and DC field situations were analyzed with models. A kinetic approach interlinking viscosity, EOF velocity, and the kinetic adsorption constants was established to interpret the synergistic mechanisms which can be further adopted to estimate temperature–electrokinetic induced PFOS adsorption benefits to mineral and carbonaceous adsorbents. We concluded that such kinetic regulation may provide support for controlling the transmission of PFOS.
Perfluorooctane sulfonate adsorption on powder activated carbon: Effect of phosphate (P) competition, pH, and temperature

Abstract:Powdered activated carbon (PAC), as an adsorbent, was applied to remove perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) from aqueous solution. Laboratory batch experiments were performed to investigate the influences of phosphate (P) competition, temperature, and pH for PFOS adsorption onto PAC. The results showed that higher temperature favored PFOS adsorption in single and binary systems. The kinetic data fitted very well to the pseudo second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamically, the endothermic enthalpy of the PFOS adsorption in single and binary systems were 125.07 and 21.25 kJ mol-1, respectively. The entropy of the PFOS adsorption in single and binary systems were 0.479 and 0.092 kJ mol-1 K-1, respectively. And the Gibbs constants were negative. These results indicated that the adsorption processes were spontaneous. The adsorption isotherms of PFOS agreed well with the Langmuir model. In the single system, PFOS adsorption decreased with increased pH value. The difference in the amount of PFOS adsorption between the single and binary systems increased at higher pH. Frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) demonstrated that P competition increased the hydrophilicity of the PAC and the electrostatic repulsion between PFOS and PAC, then the PFOS adsorption amount decreased. It also demonstrated that, at higher temperature, increased PFOS adsorption was mainly due to the higher diffusion rate of PFOS molecules and greater number of active sites opened on the PAC surface.

Abstract:Effect of effluent organic matter (EfOM) on the adsorption of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) onto powdered activated carbon (PAC) was quantitatively investigated at environmentally relevant concentration levels. The adsorption of both perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) onto PAC followed pseudo-second order kinetics and fitted the Freundlich model well under the given conditions. Intraparticle diffusion was found to be the rate-controlling step in the PFC adsorption process onto PAC in the absence and presence of EfOM. The presence of EfOM, either in PFC-EfOM simultaneous adsorption onto fresh PAC or in PFC adsorption onto EfOM-preloaded PAC. significantly reduced the adsorption capacities and sorption rates of PFCs. The pH of zero point of charge was found to be 7.5 for fresh PAC and 4.2 for EfOM-preloaded PAC, suggesting that the adsorbed EfOM imparted a negative charge on PAC surface. The effect of molecular weight distribution of EfOM on the adsorption of PFCs was investigated with two EfOM fractions obtained by ultrafiltration. The low-molecular-weight compounds (<1 kDa) were found to be the major contributors to the significant reduction in PFC adsorption capacity, while large-molecular-weight compounds (>30 kDa) had much less effect on PFC adsorption capacity. Abstract:Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) have increasingly attracted global concerns in recent years due to their global distribution, persistence, strong bioaccumulation and potential toxicity. The feasibility of using powder activated carbon (PAC), granular activated carbon (GAC) and anion-exchange resin (AI400) to remove PFOS and PFOA from water was investigated with regard to their sorption kinetics and isotherms. Sorption kinetic results show that the adsorbent size influenced greatly the sorption velocity, and both the GAC and AI400 required over 168h to achieve the equilibrium, much longer than 4h for the PAC. Two kinetic models were adopted to describe the experimental data, and the pseudo-second-order model well described the sorption of PFOS and PFOA on the three adsorbents. The sorption isotherms show that the GAC had the lowest sorption capacity both for PFOS and PFOA among the three adsorbents, while the PAC and AI400 possessed the highest sorption capacity of 1.04mmolg−1 for PFOS and 2.92mmolg−1 for PFOA according to the Langmuir fitting. Based on the sorption behaviors and the characteristics of the adsorbents and adsorbates, ion exchange and electrostatic interaction as well as hydrophobic interaction were deduced to be involved in the sorption, and some hemi-micelles and micelles possibly formed in the intraparticle pores.

Abstract:Climate change incurred by the increasing amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere has become a global priority, and triggers the development of carbon capture, utilization, and storage. Low energy requirement and cost by employing moisture swing process make quaternary ammonium-based materials applicable for CO2 capture. The moisture-sensitive sorbents suffer decreased CO2 affinity and cyclic capacities with moderate or high humidity, while water vapor ubiquitously exists in flue gas or ambient air. The effect of applying electric field on CO2 adsorption, especially the water-involved proton transfer step, by quaternary ammonium-based sorbents in the existence of water, is analyzed. The discrepancy in the hydrophilicity between reactant and product species is enhanced by the electric field, which indicates more favorable chemisorption. Thermodynamics of CO2 adsorption coupling interfacial water evaporation under the electric field are depicted with changes of enthalpy and free energy calculated. Therefore, the rationality of electric field enhanced CO2 capture of quaternary ammonium-based sorbents in moist circumstance is theoretically validated, providing the methodology of optimizing moisture swing adsorption from process intensification apart from material design.

Role of pH in the Transformation of Perfluoroalkyl Carboxylic Acids by Activated Persulfate: Implications from the Determination of Absolute Electron-Transfer Rates and Chemical Computations

Abstract:Perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) are ubiquitous contaminants known for their bioaccumulation, toxicological harm, and resistance to degradation. Remediating PFCAs in water is an ongoing challenge with existing technologies being insufficient or requiring additional disposal. An emergent approach is using activated persulfate, which degrades PFCAs through sequential scission of CF2 equivalents yielding shorter-chain homologues, CO2 and F-. This transformation is thought to be initiated by single electron transfer (SET) from the PFCA to the activate oxidant, SO4•-. A pronounced pH effect has been observed for thermally activated persulfate PFCA transformation. To evaluate the role of pH during SET, we directly determined absolute rate constants for perfluorobutanoic acid and trifluoroacetic acid oxidation by SO4•- in the pH range of 0.5-4.0 using laser flash photolysis. The average of the rate constants for both substrates across all pH values was 9 ± 2 × 103 M-1 s-1 (±2σ), implying that acid catalysis of thermal persulfate activation may be the primary culprit of the observed pH effect, instead of pH influencing the SET step. In addition, density functional theory was used to investigate if SO4•-protonation might enhance PFCA transformation kinetics. We found that when calculations include explicit water molecules, direct SO4•- protonation does not occur.
Effects of different factors on photodefluorination of perfluorinated compounds by hydrated electrons in organo-montmorillonite system

Abstract:Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are considered as the most recalcitrant organic contaminants. Our previous research has shown that PFCs can be completely defluorinated in the UV/organoclay/3-indole acetic acid system, however, the factors that could affect the degradation of PFCs, are still not clear. In this study, we further investigated the effect of different indole derivatives and organo-modified montmorillonite on the degradation of perfluooctanoic acid (PFOA). Based on multiple linear regression analysis, our results clearly indicate that hydrated electron yields of indole derivatives, adsorption of PFOA and indole derivatives on organo-montmorillonite contributed independently to the degradation of PFOA. In addition, the results also show that the presence of humic substance (even at 10 mg C L-1) would not significantly suppress the degradation process due to the strong adsorption of humic substance on the organo-montmorillonite surface. This study would provide more information to design an efficient and environment-friendly system for degradation of PFCs, and this technique will have great potential for treatment of persistent contaminants under mild reaction conditions.
Competing Kinetic Consequences of CO2 on the Oxidative Degradation of Branched Poly(ethylenimine)

Abstract:Amine-functionalized porous solid materials are effective sorbents for direct air capture (DAC) of CO2. However, they are prone to oxidative degradation in service, increasing the materials cost for widespread implementation. While the identification of oxidation products has given insights into degradation pathways, the roles of some species, like CO2 itself, remain unresolved, with conflicting information in the literature. Here, we investigate the impact of CO2 on the oxidative degradation of poly(ethylenimine)-alumina (PEI/Al2O3) sorbents under conditions encompassing a wide range of CO2-air mixture compositions and temperatures relevant to DAC conditions, thereby reconciling the conflicting data in the literature. Degradation profiles characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, in situ ATR-FTIR, and CO2 capacity measurements reveal nonmonotonic effects of CO2 concentrations and temperatures on oxidation kinetics. Specifically, 0.04% CO2 accelerates PEI/Al2O3 oxidation more at low temperatures (<90 °C) compared to 1% and 5% CO2, but this trend reverses at high temperatures (>90 °C). First-principles metadynamics, machine learning accelerated molecular dynamics simulations, and 1H relaxometry experiments show that chemisorbed CO2 acid-catalyzes critical oxidation reactions, while extensive CO2 uptake reduces PEI branch mobility, slowing radical propagation. These contrasting kinetic effects of CO2 explain the complex degradation profiles observed in this work and in prior literature. Collectively, this work highlights the importance of considering atmospheric components in the design of DAC sorbents and processes. Additionally, it identifies the unconstrained branch mobility and local acid environment as two of the major culprits in the oxidation of amine-based sorbents, suggesting potential strategies to mitigate sorbent degradation.
Carbon Adsorbent Properties Impact Hydrated Electron Activity and Perfluorocarboxylic Acid (PFCA) Destruction

Abstract:Carbon-based adsorbents used to remove recalcitrant water contaminants, including perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are often regenerated using energy-intensive treatments that can form harmful byproducts. We explore mechanisms for sorbent regeneration using hydrated electrons (eaq -) from sulfite ultraviolet photolysis (UV/sulfite) in water. We studied the UV/sulfite treatment on three carbon-based sorbents with varying material properties: granular activated carbon (GAC), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and polyethylenimine-modified lignin (lignin). Reaction rates and defluorination of dissolved and adsorbed model perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), were measured. Monochloroacetic acid (MCAA) was employed to empirically quantify eaq - formation rates in heterogeneous suspensions. Results show that dissolved PFCAs react rapidly compared to adsorbed ones. Carbon particles in solution decreased aqueous reaction rates by inducing light attenuation, eaq - scavenging, and sulfite consumption. The magnitude of these effects depended on adsorbent properties and surface chemistry. GAC lowered PFOA destruction due to strong adsorption. CNT and lignin suspensions decreased eaq - formation rates by attenuating light. Lignin showed high eaq - quenching, likely due to its oxygenated functional groups. These results indicate that desorbing PFAS and separating the adsorbent before initiating PFAS degradation reactions will be the best engineering approach for adsorbent regeneration using UV/sulfite.
Cationic surfactants influencing the enhancement of energy efficiency for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) removal in the electrocoagulation-flotation (ECF) system

Abstract:From an environmental perspective, approaching sustainability requires a fundamental conceptual shift from the wastewater treatment process toward integrated treatment systems that consider efficient and effective utilization. This study aims to investigate the effects of different surfactants on the removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). We used cationic surfactants as both frothers and collectors in the electrocoagulation-flotation (ECF) method to improve the removal efficiency of PFOA. The results showed that, under a monopolar aluminum electrode and with an initial PFOA concentration of 0.25 mM, the ECF method with decyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide (DTAB) was able to remove over 98% of PFOA within 10 min. Cationic surfactants with a similar linear alkyl chain shape to PFOA, but a longer chain length, are more effective at removing PFOA through the ECF process. The removal mechanism is thought to involve co-precipitation with aluminum hydroxides through Al–F bonding, co-flotation with cationic surfactants, and mixed micelle formation with cationic surfactants. The optimal conditions were tested in both synthetic and realistic wastewater matrices and produced similar results. It has the potential for real wastewater application. The energy yield (G 50 ) of ECF with 5 mM DTAB is 497 g·kWh −1 , superior to other treatments, and is an extremely energy-effective method for separating PFOA from wastewater.

The major findings are: (i) When theta(rel)>or= 0.53 (theta(CO) is the relative CO(ad) coverage), CO(ad) desorption takes place at T > 40 degrees C (as confirmed by the decrease in both of the C-O(L) stretching frequency as well as the CO(ad) stripping charge), and when theta(rel) is below 0.39, no CO(ad) desorption is observed at temperatures up to 70 degrees C; (ii) A slight increase in CO(ad) desorption rate with electrode potential from 0.1 to 0.3 V and fast adsorption/desorption equilibrium in solution saturated with CO are observed; (iii) From the temperature-dependent changes in CO(ad) surface coverage, the activation energies for CO(ad) desorption are determined to be in the range of 104 and 117 kJ mol(-1), which increases with decreasing CO(ad) coverage.

Abstract:Here, we describe surface functionalized, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanocrystals (IONCs) for ultra-high PFAS sorption and precise, low energy (magnetic) separation, considering perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). As a function of surface coating, sorption capacities described are considerably higher than previous studies using activated carbon, polymers, and unmodified metal/metal oxides, among others. In particular, positively charged polyethyleneimine (PEI) coated IONCs demonstrate extreme sorption capacities for both PFOA and PFOS due to electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, along with high polymer grafting densities, while remaining stable in water, thus maintaining available surface area. Further, through a newly developed method using a quart crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D), we present real-time, interfacial observations (e.g., sorption kinetics). Through this method, we explore underpinning mechanism(s) for differential PFAS (PFOA vs PFOS) sorption behavior(s), demonstrating that PFAS functional head group strongly influence molecular orientation on/at the sorbent interface. The effects of water chemistry, including pH, ionic composition of water, and natural organic matter on sorption behavior are also evaluated and along with material (treatment) demonstration via bench-scale column studies.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance geometry (FTIR-ATR), combined with a 2D correlation analysis, was here employed to investigate temperature-induced spectral changes occurring in a particular type of novel cellulosic-based nano-material prepared using 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidized and ultra-sonicated cellulose nano-fibers (TOUS-CNFs) as three-dimensional scaffolds, and branched polyethyleneimine (bPEI) as cross-linking agent. The aim was to highlight the complex sequential events involving the different functional groups of the polymeric network, as well as to gain insight into the interplay between the amount of bPEI and the resulting sponge-like material, upon increasing temperature. In this framework, synchronous and asynchronous 2D spectra were computed and analyzed in three wavenumber regions (900–1200 cm−1, 1500–1700 cm−1 and 2680–3780 cm−1), where specific vibrational modes of the cellulosic structure fall, and over a T-range between 250 K and 340 K. A step-by-step evolution of the different arrangements of the polymer functional groups was proposed, with particular regard to how the cooperativity degree of inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs) changes upon heating. Information acquired can be useful, in principle, in order to develop a next-generation, T-sensitive novel material to be used for water remediation applications or for drug-delivery nano-vectors.

Revealing the Molecular-Level Interactions between Cationic Fluorinated Polymer Sorbents and the Major PFAS Pollutant PFOA

Abstract:The development of new technologies for the removal of a family of manufactured chemicals, the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), from the environment is urgently needed to safeguard public and environmental health. Here we report a fundamental study of the binding mechanisms driven by fluorine–fluorine and electrostatic interactions between perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), an important PFAS molecule, and three types of block copolymer sorbents containing individually perfluoropolyether (PFPE) or quaternized ammonium groups, or both functional segments in combination. The results show that both the fluorine–fluorine interactions between the PFPE segment of the block copolymer and the fluorinated tail of the PFOA as well as electrostatic attraction between the quaternized ammonium group and the anionic PFOA headgroup are crucial to achieve effective PFOA sorption from aqueous solutions. The fluorine–fluorine interactions contribute to recognition of PFOA molecules via fluorophilicity, with fast exchange between bound and free PFOA being observed, while the electrostatic interactions can tightly bind PFOA, thus precluding such exchange. Both types of interaction are observed to be rapidly established within 5 min. We show that the sorbents containing both fluorinated and cationic groups have a higher PFOA removal efficiency with potentially improved sorption capacity compared with the sorbents with a single functional group and that the electrostatic attraction is stronger and dominates the fluorine–fluorine interactions when the sorbent is highly charged. Overall, these results provide important insights into designing novel sorbents for rapid and efficient PFAS removal from contaminated environments.

Abstract:The characterization of fluorinated carbon fibers by water sorption has been broadly investigated in this work. In brief, a pitch-based activated carbon fiber (ACF) was submitted to a fluorination process under different conditions of partial pressure (F 2 :N 2 ratio) and temperature. This led to samples with varied fluorine content and C-F type bonding. The effect of the fluorination treatment on the textural properties of the ACF was studied by means of nitrogen and carbon dioxide adsorption at −196 and 0°C, respectively, while the changes induced in the surface chemistry of the materials were analyzed by XPS. Also, the affinity and stability of the materials toward water was evaluated by single and cycling isotherms. The obtained results show that a mild fluorination not only can preserve most of the textural properties of the parent ACF, but enhance the water uptake at the first stages of the water sorption process, together with a shift in the upswing of the water isotherms toward lower relative humidities. This indicates that fluorination under certain conditions can actually enhance the surface hydrophilicity of carbon materials with specific properties. On the contrary, higher partial pressures led to highly fluorinated fibers with lower porosity and more hydrophobic character. Moreover, they presented a lower chemical stability as demonstrated by a change in the shape of the water isotherms after two consecutive measurements. The kinetics of water sorption in the ACFs provided further insights into the different sorption phenomena involved. Hence, water sorption can definitely help to tailor the water affinity, stability and performance of fluorinated porous carbon materials under humid conditions.
