Abstract:The dimensionality of a correlated many-body system has a large impact on its electronic properties. When electrons are confined to one-dimensional chains of atoms their behavior is very different than in higher dimensional systems because they become strongly correlated, even in the case of vanishingly small interactions. The chains consisting of copper and oxygen atoms are particularly interesting, because the CuO orbitals are constituents of all known high temperature superconductors. Most of previous spectroscopic studies of CuO chain systems indicated insulating behavior[23-25]. Here we report the discovery of momentum dependent superconducting gap and hump-peak-dip structure in the spectra of the CuO chains. We demonstrate that superconductivity in the chains arises due to proximity effects and the peculiar momentum dependence of the superconducting gap shows how three dimensional coherence emerges in a layered superconductor. The presence of the hump-dip-peak structure in the spectra of the CuO chains is very unexpected as it was thought to only occur in the CuO2 planes and is frequently considered to be a signature of the d-wave pairing and the pairing boson itself.

Abstract:Recently, superconductivity has been reported in copper oxides (Sr,Ca)14Cu24O41 with ladders and edge-sharing chains under pressure. In order to understand the mechanism of superconductivity, it is crucial to clarify the distribution of self-doped holes. From the analysis of the optical conductivity using the ionic model and the exact diagonalization method, we confirm that with substituting Ca for Sr the self-doped holes are transferred from the chains to the ladders. We also examine the electronic states of edge-sharing chains in a variety of copper oxides and derive the effective Hamiltonian. The dependences of the magnetic interactions between Cu ions and of the hopping energies of the Zhang–Rice singlet on the bond angle of Cu–O–Cu are discussed.

Electron-Spin Excitation Coupling in an Electron-Doped Copper Oxide Superconductor

Abstract:High-temperature (high- Tc) superconductivity in the copper oxides arises from electron or hole doping of their antiferromagnetic (AF) insulating parent compounds. The evolution of the AF phase with doping and its spatial coexistence with superconductivity are governed by the nature of charge and spin correlations, which provides clues to the mechanism of high- Tc superconductivity. Here we use neutron scattering and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) to study the evolution of the bosonic excitations in electron-doped superconductor Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4−δ with different transition temperatures (Tc) obtained through the oxygen annealing process. We find that spin excitations detected by neutron scattering have two distinct modes that evolve with Tc in a remarkably similar fashion to the low-energy electron tunnelling modes detected by STS. These results demonstrate that antiferromagnetism and superconductivity compete locally and coexist spatially on nanometre length scales, and the dominant electron–boson coupling at low energies originates from the electron-spin excitations. The combination of bulk momentum-space and local real-space probes shows that superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in an electron-doped copper oxide superconductor coexist and compete on a nanometre scale, with electronic spin excitations that are probably involved in the superconducting pairing mechanism.

Abstract:A major unsolved puzzle in cuprate superconductivity is that, despite accumulated evidence of more conventional normal state properties over the last 30 years, the superconducting $T_c$ of the overdoped cuprates seems to be still controlled by phase coherence rather than the Cooper pair formation. So far, a microscopic understanding of this unexpected behavior is lacking. Here we report angle-resolved photoemission, magnetic and thermodynamic evidence that Cooper pairs form at temperatures more than 30% above $T_c$ in overdoped metallic Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ (Bi-2212). More importantly, our data lead to a microscopic understanding where the phase fluctuation is enhanced by the flat dispersion near the Brillouin zone boundary. This proposal is tested by a sign-problem free quantum Monte Carlo simulation. Such a microscopic mechanism is likely to find applications in other flat band superconductors, such as twisted bilayer-bilayer graphene and NdNiO$_2$

Abstract:Bulk charge density waves are now reported in nearly all high-temperature superconducting cuprates, with the noticeable exception of one particular family: the copper oxychlorides. Here, we used resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to reveal a bulk charge density waves in these materials. Combining resonant inelastic X-ray scattering with non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, we investigate the interplay between the lattice excitations and the charge density wave, and evidence the phonon anomalies of the Cu-O bond-stretching mode at the charge density wave wave-vector. We propose that such electron-phonon anomalies occur in the presence of dispersive charge excitations emanating from the charge density wave and interacting with the Cu-O bond-stretching phonon. Our results pave the way for future studies, combining both bulk and surface probes, to investigate the static and dynamical properties of the charge density wave in the copper oxychloride family.

Abstract:Fluctuating superconductivity—vestigial Cooper pairing in the resistive state of a material—is usually associated with low dimensionality, strong disorder, or low carrier density. Here, we report single-particle spectroscopic, thermodynamic and magnetic evidence for persistent superconducting fluctuations in the heavily hole-doped cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Tc=66 K) despite the high carrier density. With a sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo calculation, we show how a partially flat band at (π,0) can help enhance superconducting phase fluctuations. On the Electron Pairing Mechanism of Copper-Oxide High Temperature Superconductivity

Abstract:The elementary CuO2 plane sustaining cuprate high-temperature superconductivity occurs typically at the base of a periodic array of edge-sharing CuO5 pyramids. Virtual transitions of electrons between adjacent planar Cu and O atoms, occurring at a rate $t/{\hbar}$ and across the charge-transfer energy gap E, generate 'superexchange' spin-spin interactions of energy $J\approx4t^4/E^3$ in an antiferromagnetic correlated-insulator state. However, Hole doping the CuO2 plane converts this into a very high temperature superconducting state whose electron-pairing is exceptional. A leading proposal for the mechanism of this intense electron-pairing is that, while hole doping destroys magnetic order it preserves pair-forming superexchange interactions governed by the charge-transfer energy scale E. To explore this hypothesis directly at atomic-scale, we combine single-electron and electron-pair (Josephson) scanning tunneling microscopy to visualize the interplay of E and the electron-pair density nP in ${Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x}}$. The responses of both E and nP to alterations in the distance {\delta} between planar Cu and apical O atoms are then determined. These data reveal the empirical crux of strongly correlated superconductivity in CuO2, the response of the electron-pair condensate to varying the charge transfer energy. Concurrence of predictions from strong-correlation theory for hole-doped charge-transfer insulators with these observations, indicates that charge-transfer superexchange is the electron-pairing mechanism of superconductive ${Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x}}$.

Abstract:Iron-chalcogenide superconductors FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ possess unique electronic properties such as non-magnetic nematic order and its quantum critical point. The nature of superconductivity with such nematicity is important for understanding the mechanism of unconventional superconductivity. A recent theory suggested the possible emergence of a fundamentally new class of superconductivity with the so-called Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces (BFSs) in this system. However, such an {\em ultranodal} pair state requires broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in the superconducting state, which has not been observed experimentally. Here we report muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ superconductors for $0\le x \le 0.22$ covering both orthorhombic (nematic) and tetragonal phases. We find that the zero-field muon relaxation rate is enhanced below the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ for all compositions, indicating that the superconducting state breaks TRS both in the nematic and tetragonal phases. Moreover, the transverse-field $\mu$SR measurements reveal that the superfluid density shows an unexpected and substantial reduction in the tetragonal phase ($x>0.17$). This implies that a significant fraction of electrons remain unpaired in the zero-temperature limit, which cannot be explained by the known unconventional superconducting states with point or line nodes. The time-reversal symmetry breaking and the suppressed superfluid density in the tetragonal phase, together with the reported enhanced zero-energy excitations, are consistent with the ultranodal pair state with BFSs. The present results reveal two different superconducting states with broken TRS separated by the nematic critical point in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$, which calls for the theory of microscopic origins that account for the relation between the nematicity and superconductivity.

Abstract:Electronic Raman scattering measurements have been performed on hole doped copper oxide superconductors as a function of temperature and doping level. In the superconducting state coherent Bogoliubov quasiparticles develop preferentially over the nodal region in the underdoped regime. We can then define the fraction of coherent Fermi surface, $f_c$ around the nodes for which quasiparticles are well defined and superconductivity sets in. We find that $f_c$ is doping dependent and leads to the emergence of two energy scales. We then establish in a one single gap shem, that the critical temperature $T_{c} \propto f_{c}\Delta_{max}$ where $\Delta_{max}$ is the maximum amplitude of the d-wave superconducting gap. In the normal state, the loss of antinodal quasiparticles spectral weight detected in the superconducting state persists and the spectral weight is only restored above the pseudogap temperature $T*$. Such a dichotomy in the quasiparticles dynamics is then responsible for the emergence of the two energy scales in the superconducting state and the appearance of the pseudogap in the normal state. We propose a 3D phase diagram where both the temperature and the energy phase diagrams have been plotted together. We anticipate that the development of coherent excitations on a restricted part of the Fermi surface only is a general feature in high $T_c$ cuprate superconductors as the Mott insulating is approaching.

Abstract:Bulk crystals of electron-doped cuprates with the T'-type structure require both Ce substitutions and reduction annealing for the emergence of superconductivity while the reduction annealing alone can induce superconductivity in thin films of the T'-type cuprates. In order to reveal low-energy electronic states which are responsible for the superconductivity, we have conducted angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on thin films of the superconducting Ce-free T'-type cuprate Pr$_2$CuO$_4$. The results indicate that the overall band structure and the Fermi surface area of the superconducting Pr$_2$CuO$_4$ are similar to those of superconducting Ce-doped bulk single crystals, highlighting the importance of the actual electron concentration rather than the Ce concentration when discussing the physical properties of the T'-type cuprates.

Abstract:This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to some experimental mistakes. In this paper, we reported that C66, C44 and (C11-C12)/2 show remarkable softening toward the structural transition temperature TS. The data reported in this paper were acquired using the ultrasonic frequency lower than 25 MHz. Recently, we performed high-frequency measurements for the same system. We found that the anomaly of C44 and (C11-C12)/2 tend to disappear rapidly with increasing the frequency. On the other hand, C66 anomaly is still there at high frequencies. Therefore, we concluded that the observed anomalies in C44 and (C11-C12)/2 are not true. They would be ascribed to certain influence by the large softening of C66. So, we have checked our data through careful measurements by using ultrasonic frequency higher than 60 MHz, so far. Then, it has been found that C66 shows still nice softening toward TS, but that its temperature dependence is slightly different from the results of this paper. We have accumulated reliable data now. They will be reported in near future.

Abstract:High-temperature copper oxide superconductors consist of stacked CuO 2 planes, with electronic band structures and magnetic excitations that are primarily two-dimensional 1 , 2 , but with superconducting coherence that is three-dimensional. This dichotomy highlights the importance of out-of-plane charge dynamics, which has been found to be incoherent in the normal state 3 , 4 within the limited range of momenta accessible by optics. Here we use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to explore the charge dynamics across all three dimensions of the Brillouin zone. Polarization analysis of recently discovered collective excitations (modes) in electron-doped copper oxides 5 – 7 reveals their charge origin, that is, without mixing with magnetic components 5 – 7 . The excitations disperse along both the in-plane and out-of-plane directions, revealing its three-dimensional nature. The periodicity of the out-of-plane dispersion corresponds to the distance between neighbouring CuO 2 planes rather than to the crystallographic c -axis lattice constant, suggesting that the interplane Coulomb interaction is responsible for the coherent out-of-plane charge dynamics. The observed properties are hallmarks of the long-sought ‘acoustic plasmon’, which is a branch of distinct charge collective modes predicted for layered systems 8 – 12 and argued to play a substantial part in mediating high-temperature superconductivity 10 – 12 .
Theoretical analysis of the origin of the double-well band dispersion in the CuO double chains of Pr$_2$Ba$_4$Cu$_7$O$_{15-δ}$ and its impact on superconductivity

Abstract:Pr$_2$Ba$_4$Cu$_7$O$_{15-\delta}$ is a unique member of cuprate superconductors where many studies suggest that CuO double chains are responsible for superconductivity. One characteristic and non-trivial feature of its electronic structure is a relatively large electron hopping $t$ between nearest neighbor Cu sites with a Cu-O-Cu angle of around 90 degrees. In this study, we have theoretically pinned down the origin of a large $|t|$ in the double-chain structure of Pr$_2$Ba$_4$Cu$_7$O$_{15-\delta}$ using first-principles calculation and tight-binding-model analysis. We have found that, in the nearest neighbor hopping $t$, $d$-$d$ and $d$-$p$-$p$-$d$ contributions roughly cancel each other out and the $d$-$p$-$d$ hopping path enhanced by the local distortion of the double chain is a key to get the large $|t|$. Double-well band dispersion arising from the relatively large $|t/t'|$ allows the enhancement of spin-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity by the incipient-band mechanism, where the one band bottom plays a role of the incipient valley. Our study provides the important knowledge to understand the unique superconductivity in Pr$_2$Ba$_4$Cu$_7$O$_{15-\delta}$.

Abstract:The parent compound of the copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors is a Mott insulator. Superconductivity is realized by doping an appropriate amount of charge carriers. How a Mott insulator transforms into a superconductor is crucial in understanding the unusual physical properties of high-temperature superconductors and the superconductivity mechanism. Here we report high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurement on heavily underdoped Bi2Sr2–xLaxCuO6+δ system. The electronic structure of the lightly doped samples exhibit a number of characteristics: existence of an energy gap along the nodal direction, d-wave-like anisotropic energy gap along the underlying Fermi surface, and coexistence of a coherence peak and a broad hump in the photoemission spectra. Our results reveal a clear insulator–superconductor transition at a critical doping level of ~0.10 where the nodal energy gap approaches zero, the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic order disappears, and superconductivity starts to emerge. These observations clearly signal a close connection between the nodal gap, antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. How superconductivity emerges out of the antiferromagnetic insulating state of the cuprates is unclear. High-resolution ARPES measurements reported by Zhouet al.suggest that this emerges at the point where antiferromagnetic order disappears and the nodal gap of its electronic structure falls to zero.

Abstract:We present an analysis of a system of weakly coupled Hubbard chains based on combining an exact study of spectral functions of the uncoupled-chain system with a renormalization group method for the coupled chains. For low values of the onsite repulsion U and of the doping δ, the leading instability is towards a superconducting state. The process includes excited states above a small correlation pseudogap. Similar features appear in extended Hubbard models in the vicinity of commensurate fillings. Our theoretical predictions are consistent with the phase diagram observed in the (TMTTF)2X and (TMTSF)2X series of organic compounds.

Abstract:Superconductivity in the cuprate oxide is studied by Kondo-lattice theory based on the t – J model with the electron–phonon interaction arising from the modulation of the superexchange interaction by phonons. The self-energy of electrons is decomposed into the single-site and multisite self-energies. It is proved by using the mapping of the single-site self-energy in the t – J model to its corresponding one in the Anderson model that the single-site self-energy is simply that of a conventional Fermi liquid, even if a superconducting order parameter appears or the multisite self-energy is anomalous. The electron liquid characterized by the single-site self-energy is a conventional Fermi liquid. The Fermi liquid is further stabilized by the resonating-valence-bond (RVB) mechanism. The stabilized Fermi liquid is a relevant unperturbed state that can be used to study superconductivity and anomalous Fermi-liquid behaviors. The so-called spin-fluctuation-mediated exchange interaction, which includes the superexchange interaction as a part, is the attractive interaction that binds d x 2 - y 2 -wave Cooper pairs. An analysis of the spin susceptibility implies that, because of the electron–phonon interaction, the imaginary part of the exchange interaction has a sharp peak or dip at ±ω * , where ω * ≃ω ph in the normal state and $(1/2)\epsilon_{\text{G}} \lesssim \omega^{*}\lesssim (1/2)\epsilon_{\text{G}} + \omega_{\text{ph}}$ in the superconducting state, where ω ph is the energy of relevant phonons and ε G is the superconducting gap. If the imaginary part has a sharp peak or dip at ±ω * , then the dispersion relation of quasi-particles has kink structures near ±ω * above and below the chemical potential, the density of states has dip-and-hump structures near ±ω * outside the coherence peaks in the superconducting state, and the anisotropy of the gap deviates from the simple d x 2 - y 2 -wave anisotropy.
