Abstract:We report on transient reflectivity and magneto-optical Kerr measurements from the colossal magnetoresistance compounds La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO), La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO), and Sr2FeMoO6 (SFMO) as a function of temperature and magnetic field. In LCMO and LSMO, an unusually slow (similar to 1 mu s) carrier relaxation component is revealed in the transient reflectivity traces. The component disappears as the transition temperature is approached from below. This slow decay process is attributed to spin-lattice relaxation of carriers in localized states and shows a close relationship with the spectral weight near the Fermi surface. The attribution is further supported by our pump-probe magneto-optical Kerr measurements. In addition to the clear observation of magnetic precessions, a long-lived exponentially decaying background reflects the spin-related relaxation of photoexcited electrons. In contrast to manganites, the temperature dependence of transient reflectivity is negligible, although there is a significant change in transient Kerr rotation in SFMO. Our results show that the dynamics of charge, spin, and lattice are strongly correlated with each other in the manganites, but the spin degree of freedom is thermally insulated from the electron and lattice systems.

Abstract:The spin-states of cobalt based perovskite compounds depend sensitively on the valence state and local crystal environment of Co ions and the rich physical properties arise from strong coupling among charge, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom. While extensive studies have been carried out in the past, most of them concentrated on the isotropic compound LaCoO3. In this paper, using the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation and the real-space recursion method, we have investigated the competition of various magnetically ordered spin-states of anisotropic double-layered perovskite Sr2Y0.5Ca0.5Co2O7. The energy comparison among these states shows that the nearest-neighbor high-spin-intermediate-spin ferromagnetically ordered state is the relevant magnetic ground state of the compound. The magnetic structure and sizes of magnetic moments are consistent with the recent experimental observation.
Doping Tuned Spin Reorientation and Spin Switching in Praseodymium-Samarium Orthoferrite Single Crystals.

Abstract:We investigate the detailed analysis of the magnetic properties in a series of Pr1- xSmxFeO3 single crystals from x = 0 to 1 with an interval of 0.1. Doping controlled spin reorientation transition temperature TSR G4 (Gx, Ay, Fz) to G2 (Fx, Cy, Gz) covers a wide temperature range including room temperature. A `butterfly'-shape type-I spin switching with 180. magnetization reversal occurs below and above the magnetization compensation points in x = 0.4 to 0.8 compounds. Interestingly, in Pr0.6Sm0.4FeO3 single crystal, we find an inadequate spin reorientation transition accompanied by uncompleted type-I spin switching in the temperature region from 138 to 174 K. Furthermore, a type-II spin switching appears at 23 K, as evidenced from the magnetization curve in field-cooled-cooling (FCC) mode initially bifurcate from zero-field-cooled (ZFC) magnetization curve at 40 K and finally drops back to coincide the ZFC magnetization value at 23 K. Our current research reveals a strong and complex competition between Pr3+- Fe3+ and Sm3+-Fe3+ exchange interactions and more importantly renders a window to design spintronic device materials for future potential applications.

Abstract:We report results of magnetization, specific heat, and muon spin relaxation ($\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{SR}$) measurements on single crystals of disorder-free ${\mathrm{Yb}}^{3+}$ triangular lattice $\mathrm{Yb}{({\mathrm{BaBO}}_{3})}_{3}$. The magnetization experiments show anisotropic magnetic properties with Curie-Weiss temperatures ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}=\ensuremath{-}1.40\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ ($H\ensuremath{\perp}c$) and ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}=\ensuremath{-}1.16\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ ($H\ensuremath{\parallel}c$) determined from low-temperature data. The absence of both long-range antiferromagnetic order and spin freezing is confirmed down to 0.27 K at zero field. A two-level Schottky anomaly due to the opening of the ground-state Kramers doublet is observed from the low-temperature specific heat measurements when the applied magnetic fields ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}H>0.7\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{T}$. At zero field, the increase of both ${C}_{\mathrm{mag}}/T$ and the muon spin relaxation rate $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ below 1 K is due to the electronic spin excitations, which often exist in quantum magnets where dipole-dipole interactions create an anisotropy of magnetic properties. The spin excitation is also supported by the unusual maximum of the field dependence of $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ due to the field-induced increase in the density of excitations. We argue that dipolar interaction is dominant and induces the spin dynamics in the quantum magnet $\mathrm{Yb}{({\mathrm{BaBO}}_{3})}_{3}$.
Spin Switching and Magnetization Reversal in Single-Crystal NdFeO$_3$

Abstract:We report an experimental and computational study of single-crystal NdFeO3, which features two inequivalent magnetic sublattices, namely, Fe and Nd sublattices that are coupled in an antiparallel fashion. This paper reveals that a strong interaction between 3d and 4f electrons of the two sublattices along with a spin-lattice coupling drives an extremely interesting magnetic state that is highly sensitive to the orientation and history of weak magnetic field. The following phenomena are particularly remarkable: (1) sharply contrasting magnetization M(T) along the a and c axes; (2) a first-order spin switching along the a axis below 29 K when the system is zero-field-cooled; and (3) a progressive magnetization reversal when the system is field-cooled. The intriguing magnetic behavior is captured in our first-principles density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:The isothermal magnetoresistance (MR) with magnetic field $(H)$ parallel and perpendicular to the $ab$ plane is systematically studied on the single crystal ${\mathrm{Na}}_{0.52}\mathrm{Co}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ with charge ordering at $\ensuremath{\sim}50\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ and an in-plane ferromagnetism below $25\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$. The isothermal MR behavior with $H\ensuremath{\Vert}ab$ plane and that with $H\ensuremath{\perp}ab$ plane are quite different. When $H\ensuremath{\Vert}ab$ plane, the MR is always negative and the in-plane ferromagnetic behavior is enhanced, while the MR with $H\ensuremath{\perp}ab$ plane changes from negative to positive with decreasing temperature or increasing $H$, and the in-plane ferromagnetic behavior is suppressed. A striking feature is that the MR with $H\ensuremath{\perp}ab$ plane shows a hysteresis behavior below $25\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$, which is absent for the case of $H\ensuremath{\Vert}ab$ plane. These results provide strong evidence for a spin-flop transition of small moments of ${\mathrm{Co}}^{3.5\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\delta}}$ sites induced by $H\ensuremath{\perp}ab$ plane, leading to a metamagnetic transition for small moments of ${\mathrm{Co}}^{3.5\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\delta}}$ sites. Such complex magnetism suggests an unconventional superconductivity in ${\mathrm{Na}}_{x}\mathrm{Co}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ system because the charge-ordering ${\mathrm{Na}}_{x}\mathrm{Co}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ around $x=0.5$ has been considered to be the parent compound of superconductivity.

Abstract:The effect of spin states on the spin entropy has been studied in La0.7−xYxCa0.3CoO3 (x=0.0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.15). Magnetothermopower results reveal that Y-doping improves the spin entropy of La0.7Ca0.3CoO3. The magnetic results indicate that the Co3+ ions undergo a transition from an intermediate spin state (t52ge1g; S=1) to a low spin state (t62ge0g; S=0), which results in the enhancement of the spin entropy. A suitable theoretical model is suggested to explain well the enhancement of the spin entropy induced by spin state transition. This investigation gives strong evidence that the enhanced spin entropy contribution to the thermopower is tuned by the spin state transition.
Spin-Transfer-Torque Induced Spatially Nonuniform Switching in Ferrimagnets

Abstract:Ferrimagnet (FiM), (FeCo)1-xGdx, attracts research attention due to its ultrafast magnetic dynamics and finite net magnetization. Incorporating FiM into the magnetic tunnel junction will be beneficial to further improve the writing speed of magnetic random access memory (MRAM). It is commonly assumed that the FeCo and Gd atoms are switched together due to the strong exchange coupling, which remains valid even if one performs the two-sublattice macrospin simulation. Interestingly, using the atomistic model developed by our group, it is clearly seen that different atoms are not switched together. In addition, our study reveals that the nature of switching is spatially nonuniform even in the small sample with the dimension of 20 nm-20 nm. Furthermore, the characteristics of nonuniformity are completely different for samples with different Gd composition (x). When x is close to the magnetization compensation point, successful switching cannot be obtained, but is accompanied by the stable oscillation. The atom type that dominates the oscillation is different from that predicted by the two-sublattice macrospin model. In addition, the size of singular region is a non-monotonic function of current density. All these results can only be understood by considering the spatial nonuniform magnetization dynamics.

Abstract:The first-principles band calculations for the oxygen-deficient double perovskite ${\mathrm{YBaCo}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{5}$ show that the Co ions see a weak crystal field and remain in a high-spin state. A ${\mathrm{Co}}^{2+}/{\mathrm{Co}}^{3+}$ charge-ordering (CO) state with a structure distortion appears at low temperature, and it exhibits a weak orbital ordering. The CO transition results in a variance of the Co spin moments, which is not ascribed to a low- to high-spin-state transition. In addition, the effect of oxygen doping is qualitatively accounted for.

Abstract:The structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of the YCr0.88Fe0.12O3 single crystals were studied. Detailed magnetic studies demonstrate that the crystal is antiferromagnetic with weak canted ferromagnetism and experiences three sequential magnetic transitions around T-N1 similar to 127.3K, T-N2 similar to 115.2 K, and T-SR similar to 99.0 K. Interestingly, a temperature induced spin reorientation (SR) near TSR and magnetic field induced SR below TSR were observed. The H-T phase diagram was revealed to be quite different from both parent compounds YFeO3 and YCrO3. A dielectric relaxation around T-N1 was found to be associated with electron hopping. An intrinsic magnetoelectric effect was also observed at low temperatures. These results are helpful for understanding the exotic magnetic and magnetoelectric properties in the orthochromite and orthoferrite related systems. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:We report the spin reorientation transition and spin switching transition in perovskite structure YbFeO3 single crystal. A spin reorientation transition of type Gamma(4) -> Gamma(2) occurs in the temperature range of 6 similar to 8 K, and a type-II spin switching along c-axis is found at temperature about 20 K under an applied magnetic field of 100 Oe. In field-cooled-cooling (FCC) process, due to the spin reversal of Yb3+ magnetic moments, the magnetic moments coupling of Yb3+ and Fe3+ change from parallel to antiparallel, which leads to a significant drop in magnetization at the transition temperature. Interestingly, the Magnetization vs. magnetic field curves at various temperatures above 8 K-200 K show magnetic field induced spin switching, for which the magnetization switches from negative/positive value to positive/negative value but without change of magnitude at a magnetic field induced spin switching point. The intriguing interaction between the two magnetic sublattices of rare earth (Yb3+) and iron (Fe3+) ions is controllable by the applied magnetic field to regulate the spin switching transition temperature in YbFeO3 single crystal and make it possible as one of low field potential materials for future application in spin devices.

Abstract:Magnetization reversal and magnetic state regulation are the basis of application for magnetic materials in information processing. Here, twofold spin reorientation transitions (SRT) and field-induced multi-step spin switching phenomena were observed in NdMn0.2Fe0.8O3 (NMFO) single crystals grown via the optical floating zone method. Magnetic anisotropy was systematically investigated in both Zero-Field-Cooled (ZFC) and Field- Cooled (FC) modes. The NMFO single crystal exhibited twofold SRTs: from Gamma 4 (Gx, A y , F z ) to Gamma 1 (Ax, G y , C z ) and from Gamma 1 (Ax, G y , C z ) to Gamma 2 (Fx, C y , G z ). Furthermore, a magnetic field-induced spin reorientation transition was identified along the c-axis. Additionally, closer proximity to the SRT temperature corresponded to a reduced magnetic field requirement for inducing the spin reorientation transition. These findings contribute to our comprehension of spin dynamics in NMFO, presenting possibilities for future device applications.

Abstract:Transport efficiency of pure spin current across the ferromagnetic films adjacent with a nonmagnetic metal is strongly dependent on the spin mixing conductance, which is very sensitive to atomic-level interface conditions. Here, by the means of advanced electron microscopy techniques, atomic structure, electronic structure, and magnetic properties at Y3Fe5O12 (YIG)/Pt interface are detailed characterized to correlate the microstructure and magnetic properties with interfacial transport properties. It is found that the order-disorder structure transformation at the interface is accompanied with oxygen deficiency, thus the reduced iron valence and the break of magnetic atom-O-magnetic atom bridges, which is responsible for superexchange interaction and magnetic order. It is also found that the magnetic moment of interfacial iron ions is decreased. The disorder interfacial layer with suppressed magnetism finally contributes to the declined spin transport efficiency. Our results provide the knowledge to control and manipulate the interfacial structure and properties in order to obtain higher spin transport efficiency. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.
Quantum phase transitions in magnetism and superconductivity: emergent spin topology seen with neutrons

Abstract:Magnetic spins and charges interact strongly in high-temperature superconductors. New physics emerges as layers of copper oxide are tuned towards the boundary of the superconducting phase. As the pseudogap increases the characteristic spin excitation energy decreases. We show that our well-annealed YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO6+x) single crystals are orthorhombic and superconducting but not antiferromagnetically ordered. Near the critical concentration for superconductivity for x = 0.35 the spins fluctuate on two energy scales, one a relaxational spin response at ~2 meV and the other a slow central mode that is resolution-limited in energy (<0.08 meV) but broad in momentum. The gradual formation on cooling of a central mode over a range of momenta suggests that the spin ground state from which coherent superconducting pairing emerges may be quantum disordered. We show that YBCO6.35 adopts a homogeneous state that consists of highly-organized frozen sub-critical three-dimensional spin correlations. The continuous spin evolution indicates that a single quantum state occurs in contrast to claims from site-based probes that lightly doped YBCO undergoes a transition to antiferromagnetic Bragg order followed by a sharp transition to a cluster glass phase. For x = 0.35, where Tc = 18 K is reduced to 1/5 of Tcmax, the spin ground state is reached without a sharp transition and consists of short correlations extending over only 8 Angstrom between cells and 42 Angstrom within the planes. Polarized neutrons show the angular spin distribution to be isotropic unlike the AF insulator. Since moment is conserved we interpret this as evidence for hole-induced spin rotations rather than decay.

Abstract:We use inelastic neutron scattering to study energy and wave vector dependence of spin fluctuations in SrCo_{2}As_{2}, derived from SrFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_{2} iron pnictide superconductors. Our data reveal the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations at wave vectors Q_{AF}=(1,0) and Q_{FM}=(0,0)/(2,0), respectively. By comparing neutron scattering results with those of dynamic mean field theory calculation and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, we conclude that both AF and FM spin fluctuations in SrCo_{2}As_{2} are closely associated with a flatband of the e_{g} orbitals near the Fermi level, different from the t_{2g} orbitals in superconducting SrFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_{2}. Therefore, Co substitution in SrFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_{2} induces a t_{2g} to e_{g} orbital switching, and is responsible for FM spin fluctuations detrimental to the singlet pairing superconductivity.
