Abstract:Using bordered Floer theory, we construct an invariant $\widehat{\mathit{HFO}}(Y^{\text{orb}})$ for $3$-orbifolds $Y^{\text{orb}}$ with singular set a knot that generalizes the hat flavor $\widehat{\mathit{HF}}(Y)$ of Heegaard Floer homology for closed $3$-manifolds $Y$. We show that for a large class of $3$-orbifolds, $\widehat{\mathit{HFO}}$ behaves like $\widehat{\mathit{HF}}$ in that $\widehat{\mathit{HFO}}$, together with a relative $\mathbb{Z}_2$-grading, categorifies the order of $H_1^{\text{orb}}$. When $Y^{\text{orb}}$ arises as Dehn surgery on an integer-framed knot in $S^3$, we use the $\{-1,0,1\}$-valued knot invariant $\varepsilon$ to determine the relationship between $\widehat{\mathit{HFO}}(Y^{\text{orb}})$ and $\widehat{\mathit{HF}}(Y)$ of the $3$-manifold $Y$ underlying $Y^{\text{orb}}$.

Abstract:We extend Perutz's Lagrangian matching invariants to 3-manifolds which are not necessarily fibred using the technology of holomorphic quilts. We prove an isomorphism of these invariants with Ozsvath-Szabo's Heegaard Floer invariants for certain extremal spin^c structures. As applications, we give new calculations of Heegaard Floer homology of certain classes of 3-manifolds, and a characterization of Juhasz's sutured Floer homology.

We describe what are known about their relationship, what are expected, and raise some questions along the way.

Abstract:Recently Auckly-Kim-Melvin-Ruberman showed that for any finite subgroup G of SO(4) there exists a contractible 4-manifold with an effective G-action on its boundary so that the twists associated to the non-trivial elements of G do not extend to diffeomorphisms of the entire manifold. We use a Heegaard Floer theoretic argument originating in work of Akbulut-Karakurt to give a different proof of this phenomenon.

Abstract:Let L be a link in an integral homology three-sphere. We give a description of the Heegaard Floer homology of integral surgeries on L in terms of some data associated to L, which we call a complete system of hyperboxes for L. Roughly, a complete systems of hyperboxes consists of chain complexes for (some versions of) the link Floer homology of L and all its sublinks, together with several chain maps between these complexes. Further, we introduce a way of presenting closed four-manifolds with b_2^+ > 1 by four-colored framed links in the three-sphere. Given a link presentation of this kind for a four-manifold X, we then describe the Ozsvath-Szabo mixed invariants of X in terms of a complete system of hyperboxes for the link. Finally, we explain how a grid diagram produces a particular complete system of hyperboxes for the corresponding link.

Abstract:Suppose that X is an orbifold. In general, KX is an orbifold vector bundle or a Q-divisor only. When the X is so called Gorenstein, KX is a bundle or a divisor. For Gorenstein orbifold, a resolution π : Y → X is called a crepant resolution if πKX = KY . Here, ”crepant” can be viewed as a minimality condition with respect to canonical bundle. Crepant resolution always exists when dimension is two or three. A nice way to construct it is to use Hilbert scheme of points. However, the crepant resolution in dimension three is not unique. Different crepant resolutions are connected by flops. When the dimension is bigger than four, the crepant resolution does not always exist. It is an extremely interesting problem in algebraic geometry to find out when it does exist. One of famous example is Hilbert scheme of points of algebraic surfaces, which is a crepant resolution of the symmetry product of an algebraic surface. It has long been an interesting problem to compute cohomology of Hilbert scheme of points of algebraic surfaces. A great deal of works has been done by algebraic geometors. As far as the author’s knowledge, everything has been computed except its ring structure. Among all the progress, a less known but crucial ingredient is the link to the orbifold cohomology of the symmetry product. Suppose that M is an algebraic surface. We use M [n] to denote the Hilbert scheme of points of length n of M . In 1994, in order to explain the modularity of the generating function ∑∞ n=1 χ(M [n])qn computed by Göttsche [G], Vafa-Witten [VW] computed ⊕nH (M/Sn,C). Motivated by orbifold conformal field theory, they directly wrote ⊕nH (M/Sn,C) as a ”Fock space” or a representation of Heisenberg algebra. Then, the generating function of Euler characteristic is interpreted as the correlation function of an elliptic curve. Therefore, it should be invariant under modular transformations of the elliptic curve. Orbifold string theory conjecture predicates that ⊕nH ∗(M [n],C) should also admit a representation of Heisenberg algebra. This conjecture was verified by a beautiful work of Nakajima [N] and others. One of theme of this short note is that the orbifold M/Sn will continue to play a crucial role to compute ring structure of H∗(M [n],C). During last two years, there was a surge of activities to study mathematics of the orbifold string theory, which author called the stringy orbifolds. A few curious physical concepts such as the orbifold Euler-Hodge numbers of global quotients found their places in a much broader and deeper theory. For example, a new cohomology (orbifold cohomology) was constructed [CR1]. The growth was so explosive that the author believes that there is an emerging new subject of mathematics. He learned in graduate school that the test of the relevance of a new theory has been the progress it made from old problems. Therefore, it is particularly significant to revisit the problem of computing the ring structure of M [n] and a crepant resolution in general. In [R2], the author proposed a conjecture in the case of a hyperkahler resolution.

Abstract:We construct a combinatorial invariant of 3-orbifolds with singular set a link that generalizes the Turaev torsion invariant of 3-manifolds. We give several gluing formulas from which we derive two consequences. The first is an understanding of how the components of the invariant change when we remove a curve from the singular set. The second is a formula relating the invariant of the 3-orbifold to the Turaev torsion invariant of the underlying 3-manifold in the case when the singular set is a nullhomologous knot.

Abstract:This is a companion paper to earlier work of the authors (Preprint, arXiv:1604.03466, 2016), which interprets the Heegaard Floer homology for a manifold with torus boundary in terms of immersed curves in a punctured torus. We establish a variety of properties of this invariant, paying particular attention to its relation to knot Floer homology, the Thurston norm, and the Turaev torsion. We also give a geometric description of the gradings package from bordered Heegaard Floer homology and establish a symmetry under Spin c conjugation; this symmetry gives rise to genus one mutation invariance in Heegaard Floer homology for closed three-manifolds. Finally, we include more speculative discussions on relationships with Seiberg-Witten theory, Khovanov homology, and HF ± . Many examples are included.

Abstract:This is a survey article about knot Floer homology. We present three constructions of this invariant: the original one using holomorphic disks, a combinatorial description using grid diagrams, and a combinatorial description in terms of the cube of resolutions. We discuss the geometric information carried by knot Floer homology, and the connection to three- and four-dimensional topology via surgery formulas. We also describe some conjectural relations to Khovanov-Rozansky homology.

Abstract:We define relative Gromov-Witten invariants and establish a general gluing theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves for symplectic cutting and contact surgery. Then, we use our general gluing theory to study the change of GW-invariants of Calabi-Yau 3-folds tranform under flops and extremal transitions. We prove a complete formula for the change of GW-invariants of any genus transform under flop and a general type I extremal transition. Other extremal transition will be handled in a subsequent paper.
A sheaf-theoretic model for SL(2,C) Floer homology

Abstract:Given a Heegaard splitting of a three-manifold Y, we consider the SL(2,C) character variety of the Heegaard surface, and two complex Lagrangians associated to the handlebodies. We focus on the smooth open subset corresponding to irreducible representations. On that subset, the intersection of the Lagrangians is an oriented d-critical locus in the sense of Joyce. Bussi associates to such an intersection a perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles. We prove that in our setting, the perverse sheaf is an invariant of Y, i.e., it is independent of the Heegaard splitting. The hypercohomology of this sheaf can be viewed as a model for (the dual of) SL(2,C) instanton Floer homology. We also present a framed version of this construction, which takes into account reducible representations. We give explicit computations for lens spaces and Brieskorn spheres, and discuss the connection to the Kapustin-Witten equations and Khovanov homology.

Abstract:We compute the connected Heegaard Floer homology (defined by Hendricks, Hom, and Lidman) for a large class of 3-manifolds, including all linear combinations of Seifert fibered homology spheres. We show that for such manifolds, the connected Floer homology completely determines the local equivalence class of the associated $\iota$-complex. Some identities relating the rank of the connected Floer homology to the Rokhlin invariant and the Neumann-Siebenmann invariant are also derived. Our computations are based on combinatorial models inspired by the work of Némethi on lattice homology.

Abstract:These are the notes for a lecture series on Heegaard Floer homology, given by the first author at the Rényi Institute in January 2023, as part of a special semester titled ``Singularities and Low Dimensional Topology''. Familiarity with Heegaard diagrams and Morse theory is assumed. We first illustrate the relevant algebraic structures via grid homology, and then highlight the geometric rather than combinatorial nature of the general theory. We then define Heegaard Floer homology in the context of Lagrangian Floer homology, and describe some key properties.

New invariants of involutions from Seiberg-Witten Floer theory

Abstract:We study equivariant Seiberg-Witten Floer theory of rational homology $3$-spheres in the special case where the group action is given by an involution. The case of involutions deserves special attention because we can couple the involution to the charge conjugation symmetry of Seiberg-Witten theory. This leads to new Floer-theoretic invariants which we study and apply in a variety of applications. In particular, we construct a series of delta-invariants $\delta^E_*, \delta^R_*, \delta^S_*$ which are the equivariant equivalents of the Ozsváth-Szabó $d$-invariant. The delta-invariants come in three types: equivariant, Real and spin depending on the type of the spin$^c$-structure involved. The delta-invariants satisfy many useful properties, including a Froyshov-type inequality for equivariant cobordisms. We compute the delta-invariants in a wide range of examples including: equivariant plumbings, branched double covers of knots and equivariant Dehn surgery. We also consider various applications including obstructions to extending involutions over bounding $4$-manifolds, non-smoothable involutions on $4$-manifolds with boundary, equivariant embeddings of $3$-manifolds in $4$-manifolds and non-orientable surfaces bounding knots.

An Excision Theorem in Heegaard Floer Theory

Abstract:Let $Y_1$ be a closed, oriented 3-manifold and $\Sigma$ denote a non-separating closed, orientable surface in $Y_1$ which consists of two connected components of the same genus. By cutting $Y_1$ along $\Sigma$ and re-gluing it using an orientation-preserving diffeomorphism of $\Sigma$ we obtain another closed, oriented 3-manifold $Y_2$. When the excision surface $\Sigma$ is of genus one, we show that twisted Heegaard Floer homology groups of $Y_1$ and $Y_2$ (twisted with coefficients in the universal Novikov ring) are isomorphic. We use this excision theorem to demonstrate that certain manifolds are not related by the excision construction on a genus one surface. Additionally, we apply the excision formula to compute twisted Heegaard Floer homology groups of 0-surgery on certain two-component links, including some families of 2-bridge links.

Abstract:Hypertoric varieties are hyperkähler analogues of toric varieties, and are constructed as abelian hyperkähler quotients of a quaternionic affine space. Just as symplectic toric orbifolds are determined by labelled polytopes, orbifold hypertoric varieties are intimately related to the combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements. By developing hyperkähler analogues of symplectic techniques developed by Goldin, Holm, and Knutson, we give an explicit combinatorial description of the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology of an orbifold hypertoric variety in terms of the combinatorial data of a rational cooriented weighted hyperplane arrangement. We detail several explicit examples, including some computations of orbifold Betti numbers (and Euler characteristics).

Abstract:We compute the Heegaard Floer homology of $S^3_1(K)$ (the (+1) surgery on the torus knot $T_{p,q}$) in terms of the semigroup generated by $p$ and $q$, and we find a compact formula (involving Dedekind sums) for the corresponding Ozsvath--Szabo d-invariant. We relate the result to known knot invariants of $T_{p,q}$ as the genus and the Levine--Tristram signatures. Furthermore, we emphasize the striking resemblance between Heegaard Floer homologies of (+1) and (-1) surgeries on torus knots. This relation is best seen at the level of $\tau$ functions.

Abstract:We define Hamiltonian Floer homology with differential graded (DG) local coefficients for symplectically aspherical manifolds. The differential of the underlying complex involves chain representatives of the fundamental classes of the moduli spaces of Floer trajectories of arbitrary dimension. This setup allows in particular to define and compute Floer homology with coefficients in chains on fibers of fibrations over the free loop space of the underlying symplectic manifold. We develop the DG Floer toolset, including continuation maps and homotopies, and we also define and study symplectic homology groups with DG local coefficients. We define spectral invariants and establish general criteria for almost existence of contractible periodic orbits on regular energy levels of Hamiltonian systems inside Liouville domains. In the case of cotangent bundles, we prove a Viterbo isomorphism theorem with DG local coefficients. This serves as a stepping stone for applications to the almost existence of contractible closed characteristics on closed smooth hypersurfaces. In this context, our methods allow to access for the first time the dichotomy between closed manifolds that are aspherical and those that are not.

Abstract: In this paper the author discuss the relation between Lagrangian Floer homology and Gauge-theory (Donaldson theory) Floer homology. It can be regarded as a version of Atiyah-Floer type conjecture in the case of $SO(3)$-bundle with non-trivial second Stiefel-Whitney class. This is a first of a series of papers, where we describe the main results and geometric and algebraic parts of the proof. The half of analytic detail was in [Fu5] which was published in 1998. The other half will appear in subsequent papers.
Equivariant aspects of singular instanton Floer homology

Abstract:We associate several invariants to a knot in an integer homology 3-sphere using $SU(2)$ singular instanton gauge theory. There is a space of framed singular connections for such a knot, equipped with a circle action and an equivariant Chern-Simons functional, and our constructions are morally derived from the associated equivariant Morse chain complexes. In particular, we construct a triad of groups analogous to the knot Floer homology package in Heegaard Floer homology, several Frøyshov-type invariants which are concordance invariants, and more. The behavior of our constructions under connected sums are determined. We recover most of Kronheimer and Mrowka's singular instanton homology constructions from our invariants. Finally, the ADHM description of the moduli space of instantons on the 4-sphere can be used to give a concrete characterization of the moduli spaces involved in the invariants of spherical knots, and we demonstrate this point in several examples.
