Abstract:Using a distributed representation formula of the Gateaux derivative of the Dirichlet to Neumann map with respect to movements of a polygonal conductivity inclusion, [11], we extend the results obtained in [8] proving global Lipschitz stability for the determination of a polygonal conductivity inclusion embedded in a layered medium from knowledge of the Dirichlet to Neumann map.

Abstract:In 1996 Seo proved that two appropriate pairs of current and voltage data measured on the surface of a planar homogeneous object are sufficient to determine a conductive polygonal inclusion with known deviating conductivity. Here we show that the corresponding linearized forward map is injective, and from this we deduce Lipschitz stability of the solution of the original nonlinear inverse problem. We also treat the case of an insulating polygonal inclusion, in which case a single pair of Cauchy data is already sufficient for the same purpose.

Abstract:We consider the inverse problem of determining, the possibly anisotropic, conductivity of a body Ω ⊂ R n , n ≥ 3 , by means of the so-called local Neumann-to-Dirichlet map on a curved portion Σ of its boundary ∂Ω. Motivated by the uniqueness result for piecewise constant anisotropic conductivities proved in Inverse Problems 33 (2018), 125013, we provide a Hölder stability estimate on Σ when the conductivity is a-priori known to be a constant matrix near Σ.

Abstract:We consider the inverse problem of identifying an unknown inclusion contained in an elastic body by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The body is made by linearly elastic, homogeneous and isotropic material. The Lamé moduli of the inclusion are constant and different from those of the surrounding material. Under mild a-priori regularity assumptions on the unknown defect, we establish a logarithmic stability estimate. For the proof, we extend the approach used for electrical and thermal conductors in a novel way. Main tools are propagation of smallness arguments based on three-spheres inequality for solutions to the Lamé system and refined local approximation of the fundamental solution of the Lamé system in presence of an inclusion.

Abstract:In recent years, coupled physics imaging techniques have been developed to produce clearer images than those produced by electrical impedance tomography. This paper focuses on the inverse problem arising in current density impedance imaging and magneto-acousto-electric tomography. We consider the electrostatic equation del center dot (sigma del w(b)) = 0 in a bounded domain Omega subset of R-3 with either the Dirichlet or Neumann boundary condition b, where sigma is a scalar conductivity function. The inverse problem is formulated as recovering sigma from vector fields J(b) = sigma del w(b) with different boundary conditions b. We provide a local Lipschitz stability, stating that near some known sigma(0) and under some regularity assumptions, we can find b(1) and b(2) by constructing complex geometrical optics (CGO) solutions such that parallel to ln sigma((1)) ln sigma((2))parallel to(Cm,alpha((Omega) over bar)) >= C Sigma(2)(j=1) parallel to J(bj)((1)) - J(bj)((2)) parallel to(Cm,alpha((Omega) over bar)). Furthermore, we modify the CGO solutions using the reflection method to make b(1) and b(2) vanish on a portion of a plane, and prove a local Lipschitz stability with partial data.
On the shape derivative of polygonal inclusions in the conductivity problem

Abstract:We consider the conductivity problem for a homogeneous body with an inclusion of a different, but known, conductivity. Our interest concerns the associated shape derivative, i.e., the derivative of the corresponding electrostatic potential with respect to the shape of the inclusion. For a smooth inclusion it is known that the shape derivative is the solution of a specific inhomogeneous transmission problem. We show that this characterization of the shape derivative is also valid when the inclusion is a polygonal domain, but due to singularities at the vertices of the polygon, the shape derivative fails to belong to $H^1$ in this case.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 2, Page 2456-2487, April 2024. We study the stability of an inverse problem for the fractional conductivity equation on bounded smooth domains. We obtain a logarithmic stability estimate for the inverse problem under suitable a priori bounds on the globally defined conductivities. The argument has three main ingredients: 1. the logarithmic stability of the related inverse problem for the fractional Schrödinger equation by Rüland and Salo; 2. the Lipschitz stability of the exterior determination problem; 3. utilizing and identifying nonlocal analogies of Alessandrini's work on the stability of the classical Calderón problem. The main contribution of the article is the resolution of the technical difficulties related to the last mentioned step. Furthermore, we show the optimality of the logarithmic stability estimates, following the earlier works by Mandache on the instability of the inverse conductivity problem, and by Rüland and Salo on the analogous problem for the fractional Schrödinger equation.

Abstract:We consider the inverse problem of determining an inclusion contained in a body for a Schrödinger type equation by means of local Cauchy data. Both the body and the inclusion are made by inhomogeneous and anisotropic materials. Under mild a priori assumptions on the unknown inclusion, we establish a logarithmic stability estimate in terms of the local Cauchy data. In view of possible applications, we also provide a stability estimate in terms of an ad-hoc misfit functional.

Abstract:We study approximate solutions to a differential inclusion associated to a certain system of pdes in dimension three. The only datum is a set of three positive numbers identified with a positive definite diagonal matrix $S$. The average fields naturally belong to the convex hull of the set of points obtained by the triple $S$ and its permutations. We find a set of attainable average fields strictly contained in the convex hull and stable under lamination. The corresponding microgeometries are laminates of infinite rank which have an algebraic characterization that may be of independent interest. The original motivation comes from polycrystalline linearly conducting composites. As a by-product, our result establishes the optimality of a large class of microgeometries for the effective conductivity of such materials.

Abstract:We determine the conductivity of the interior of a body using electrical measurements on its surface. We assume only that the conductivity is bounded below by a positive constant and that the conductivity and surface are Lipschitz continuous. To determine the conductivity we first solve an associated integral equation locally, finding solutions in $H^1(B)$, where $B$ is a ball that properly contains the body. A key ingredient is to equip this Sobolev space with an equivalent norm which depends on two auxiliary parameters that can be chosen to yield a contraction.

Abstract:We consider a transmission problem on a polygonal partition for the two-dimensional conductivity equation. For suitable classes of partitions we establish the exact behaviour of the gradient of solutions in a neighbourhood of the vertexes of the partition. This allows to prove shape differentiability of solutions and to establish an explicit formula for the shape derivative.

Abstract:We derive bounds on the volume of an inclusion in a body in two or three dimensions when the conductivities of the inclusion and the surrounding body are complex and assumed to be known. The bounds are derived in terms of average values of the electric field, current, and certain products of the electric field and current. All of these average values are computed from a single electrical impedance tomography measurement of the voltage and current on the boundary of the body. Additionally, the bounds are tight in the sense that at least one of the bounds gives the exact volume of the inclusion for certain geometries and boundary conditions.

Abstract:We derive asymptotic expansions for the displacement at the boundary of a smooth, elastic body in the presence of small inhomogeneities. Both the body and the inclusions are allowed to be anisotropic. This work extends prior work of CapdeBoscq and Vogelius ({\em Math. Modelling Num. Anal.} 37, 2003) for the conductivity case. In particular, we obtain an asymptotic expansion of the difference between the displacements at the boundary with and without inclusions, under Neumann boundary conditions, to first order in the measure of the inclusions. We impose no geometric conditions on the inclusions, which need only be measurable sets. The first-order correction contains an elastic moment tensor $\MM$ that encodes the effect of the inclusions. In the case of thin, strip-like, planar inhomogeneities we obtain a formula for $\MM$ only in terms of the elasticity tensors, which we assume strongly convex, their inverses, and a frame on the curve that supports the inclusion. We prove uniqueness of $\MM$ in this setting and recover the formula previously obtained by Beretta and Francini ({\em SIAM J. Math. Anal.}, 38, 2006).

Abstract:We consider the problem of determining the unknown boundary values of a solution of an elliptic equation outside a bounded open set $B$ from the knowledge of the values of this solution on a boundary of an arbitrary Lipschitz bounded domain surrounding $B$.
