Abstract:Using a distributed representation formula of the Gateaux derivative of the Dirichlet to Neumann map with respect to movements of a polygonal conductivity inclusion, [11], we extend the results obtained in [8] proving global Lipschitz stability for the determination of a polygonal conductivity inclusion embedded in a layered medium from knowledge of the Dirichlet to Neumann map.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the stable reconstruction of polygonal conductivity inclusions in layered media. Specifically, the authors focus on how to stably determine the polygonal conductivity inclusions embedded in layered media from the known Dirichlet - to - Neumann map (DN map for short). They prove the global Lipschitz stability estimate for this determination, which is an extension of previous research. Previous studies dealt with the Lipschitz stability problem of one or more well - separated polygonal inclusions in a homogeneous medium. One of the key challenges mentioned in the paper lies in the study of the gradient explosion rate of the solution near the vertices of the polygon for any polygon - regular partitioned domain, and the derivation of the boundary representation of the directional derivative. By using the domain representation (also known as the distribution derivative), the authors overcome this challenge and finally derive the continuity properties and lower bounds of the derivative. These results lead to a quantitative Lipschitz stability estimate based on the DN map. The innovation of this work lies in the use of the concept of distribution derivative and the derivation of the continuity and lower bounds of the derivative from it, which finally enables the acquisition of a quantitative Lipschitz stability estimate for polygonal conductivity inclusions from the DN map. This not only extends previous research in homogeneous media, but also has important significance for practical applications, such as the detection of irregular finite sub - regions such as underground salt bodies with different conductivity characteristics in geophysical exploration.
