Abstract:The fractionated crystallization and self-nucleation behavior of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) component in the miscible PEO/poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) binary blends were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXS) under different crystallization conditions. The distribution of PEO component in the PEO/PHB blend greatly influences its fractionated crystallization behavior. The active heterogeneities, on which the semicrystalline components in the molten state can nucleate at a small supercooling, are favored to locate out of the interlamellar regions of PHB crystals during the crystallization of PHB component. The PEO component confined in the interlamellar regions of PHB crystals crystallizes at an extremely large supercooling, which is induced by the homogeneous nucleation or less active heterogeneities, while the PEO component expelled out of the interlamellar regions of PHB crystals can crystallize at a small supercooling due to the nucleation induced by active heterogeneities. In addition, the self-nucleation behavior of PEO component in the PEO/PHB blend is also affected by the active heterogeneities and the distribution of PEO phase in the blend. Different from the block copolymer systems, the PEO component confined into the interlamellar regions of PHB crystals can not be self-nucleated in the PEO/PHB blend without a nucleating agent (NA). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Aggregation–Dispersion Transition for Nanoparticles in Semiflexible Ring Polymer Nanocomposite Melts

Abstract:By employing molecular dynamics simulations, we explored the conformation transition of nanoparticles (NPs) in semiflexible ring polymer nanocomposite melts. A novel aggregation–dispersion transition for NPs in ring polymer nanocomposites occurs when the bending energy of ring chains increases. The conformations of flexible ring chains near NPs are radial distribution, and the entropic depletion interactions between a pair of NPs in flexible ring polymer nanocomposite melts are attractive, however, the rod-like ring chains wrap around the NPs and the entropic depletion interactions between NPs in rod-like ring polymer melts are repulsive. The aggregation-dispersion transition for NPs induced by chain topology in polymer nanocomposites can provide a new access to achieve miscibility in producing high-performance polymer–nanoparticle composites by simply varying the topological structure of polymers.
Heterogeneous Distribution of Entanglements in a Nonequilibrium Polymer Melt of UHMWPE: Influence on Crystallization Without and with Graphene Oxide

Abstract:In the past, studies have been performed to follow chain dynamics in an equilibrium polymer melt using low molar mass polymers. Here we show that in linear ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene entanglements formed during or after polymerization are influencing differently the overall chain topology of the polymer melt. When a disentangled UHMWPE sample is crystallized under isothermal conditions after melting, two endothermic peaks are observed. The high temperature peak is related to the melting of crystals obtained on crystallization from the disentangled domains of the heterogeneous (nonequilibrium) polymer melt, whereas the low melting temperature peak is related to the melting of crystals formed from entangled domains of the melt. On increasing the annealing time in melt, the enthalpy of the lower melting temperature peak increases at the expense of the high melting temperature peak due to the transformation of the disentangled nonequilibrium melt into the entangled equilibrium one. However, independent of the equilibrium or nonequilibrium melt state, the high melting temperature peak is observed when the disentangled samples are left to isothermally crystallize at a specific temperature, although with a decrease in bulk crystallinity. A commercial (entangled) sample, instead, shows both shift in the position of the melting temperature peak and drop in crystallinity. To ascertain that entanglements are the cause for the observed difference, experiments are performed in the presence of reduced graphene oxide (rGON): the melting response of disentangled UHMWPE crystallized from its heterogeneous melt state remains nearly independent of the: annealing time in melt.,This observation strengthens the concept that in the presence of a suitable filler, chain dynamics is arrested to an extent that the nonequilibrium melt state having lower entanglement density is retained.

Abstract:The melting mechanism at medium heating rates is unclear, owing to the lack of accurate characterizations of structural changes in poly-directional melting conditions. Here, a particular multilayered nanostructure was selected to control the propagation of melting in a single direction. We predicted the heterogeneous to homogeneous melting (HeM to HoM) transition during a single melting process at medium heating rates of 10‒400 K/ps by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, without a change in heating rates. The information on structural changes for the HeM to HoM transition, including the loss of crystallinity and long- and short-range order, are clearly provided by both a single direction and the radial distribution functions. These results contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the HeM to HoM transition induced by heating rates.

Abstract:The contributions of the dynamic fluctuations and the frozen-in inhomogeneities to the total light scattering intensity observed in poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)/clay nanocomposite hydrogels were analyzed by applying the nonergodic method proposed by Pusey and van Megen. Approximately 90% of the total scattering intensity corresponds to the frozen-in component. The scattering intensity of the fluctuating component is smaller by far than that of a pure clay suspension, indicating that the thermal fluctuations of the clay particles are largely suppressed upon network formation. Accordingly, the fluctuating component consists of two contributions: one due to the polymer chains and the other, smaller one representing the residual mobility of the clay particles. The latter depends on how tightly the clay particles are fixed in the network. The dynamic features of the nanocomposite hydrogels are described by two relaxation modes. The fast one is purely diffusive and can be related to a dynamic correlation length of 6-8 nm, which is similar to that of a corresponding polymer solution. The relaxation time of the slow mode varies appreciably with sample position even though the data had been treated with the nonergodic method.
Effect of PEO Molecular Weight on the Miscibility and Dynamics in Epoxy/peo Blends.

Abstract:In this work, the effect of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) molecular weight in blends of epoxy (ER) and PEO on the miscibility, inter-chain weak interactions and local dynamics were systematically investigated by multi-frequency temperature modulation DSC and solid-state NMR techniques. We found that the molecular weight (M(w)) of PEO was a crucial factor in controlling the miscibility, chain dynamics and hydrogen bonding interactions between PEO and ER. A critical PEO molecular weight (M(crit)) around 4.5k was found. PEO was well miscible with ER when the molecular weight was below M(crit), where the chain motion of PEO was restricted due to strong inter-chain hydrogen bonding interactions. However, for the blends with high molecular weight PEO (M(w) > M(crit)), the miscibility between PEO and ER was poor, and most of PEO chains were considerably mobile. Finally, polarization inversion spin exchange at magic angle (PISEMA) solid-state NMR experiment further revealed the different mobility of the PEO in ER/PEO blends with different molecular weight of PEO at molecular level. Based on the DSC and NMR results, a tentative model was proposed to illustrate the miscibility in ER/PEO blends.

Abstract:Compatibility between polymers with different glass transition temperatures controls the thermomechanical properties of blends. This work explores the segmental dynamics of poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) chains when they are blended with polymers of different rigidities and miscibility. Inspired by the intriguing dynamic asymmetry of chains within the interfacial layer of nanoparticles, this study aims to understand dynamic heterogeneity in dynamically asymmetric blends of PMA/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), PMA/polystyrene (PS), and PMA/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) using the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and quasi‐elastic neutron scattering (QENS) measurements below and above the glass transition temperature of PMMA or PS. Results revealed that the segmental jump distance of PMA increased on blending due to volume enhancement. The reduced effective diffusivity of PMA in PMMA is attributed to PMMA's enhanced flexibility (lower characteristic ratio, C∞ ) and superior interaction (lower χ ) when compared with the PS environment. The results demonstrate that the chain rigidity and miscibility affect the free volume, interchain cooperativity, and segmental dynamics in dynamically asymmetric blends.

Effect of Dispersity on Dynamic Properties of Polymer Melts: Insights from Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Abstract:Synthetic polymers have a distribution of chain lengths which can be characterized by dispersity, D. Macroscopic properties of polymers are influenced by chain mobility in the melt and manipulating D can significantly impact these properties. n this work, we present a detailed study of the static and dynamic behavior of fully flexible polymer chains that follow Schulz Zimm molecular weight distribution of up to dispersity two using molecular dynamics simulation. Static analysis shows that global conformation of test chains that are equal to the average molecular weight remain ideal. At small length scales, we observe systematic deviation from Gaussian statistics as D increases, given by the structure factor plots, indicating an increased stiffness of chains in disperse melts due to contributions from longer chains. We find that the average entanglement time of chains decreases with dispersity, however, this is only seen in systems with high D and MW, for systems with low MW and D, there is no change in the entanglement time. The mobility of entangled chains is considerably enhanced due to the interplay of different dynamic mechanisms, resulting in accelerated reptation as dispersity increases. Short chains offer constraint release to the longer chains, contributing to faster dynamics and early onset of disentanglement. We capture this relaxation mechanism by the coherent dynamic structure factor for entangled probe chains in the melt, which corresponds to the weakening of tube confinement. These findings provide insights into the rich dynamic heterogeneities of highly disperse polymer melts.

Abstract:The structure of chain entanglements in the solid state is important for revealing the relationship of structure and properties of polyolefin. In this work, low-field solid-state 1 H NMR is used to study the chain dynamics of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) in the solid state. It has been found that the relaxation distribution, analyzed by a multi-exponential inversion program, is an effective method to characterize the heterogeneous chain mobility. It is evidenced from the results that the UHMWPE in a less entangled state presents an obviously heterogeneous distribution of chain mobility in the non-crystalline phase, corresponding to its heterogeneous distribution of entangled points. In comparison, the commercial UHMWPE with a large number of entanglements shows a much more uniform mobility of the non-crystalline components. This heterogeneous distribution of chain mobility becomes even more critical after annealing the samples below the melting point, especially for the less entangled UHMWPE.

Abstract:The memory effect of semi-crystalline polymers is usually related to the heterogeneity in self-nucleated (SN) melts. In this study, the strong memory effects of syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP) and the heterogeneity in SN melts were systematically investigated in a wide temperature range even above its equilibrium melting temperature (T-m(o)). The rheological measurements revealed that the SN melts exhibited thermorheologically complex behaviors, indicating that the presence of the heterogeneity in the SN melts. From the rheological plots of phase angle (delta) with the complex modulus (G*), the parameter Delta In G*(delta=45). values were determined and used to compare the change of the degree of thermorheological complexity in the SN melts during the heating process. It was found that the memory effect's efficiency to promote the crystallization process improved as the increase of Delta In G*(delta=45). values, which suggested that the memory effect depended on the heterogeneity in the SN melts. After purifying the sample, the strong memory effect still existed, which indicated that it was not caused by the stabilization effect of impurities. The results of wide/small-angle X-ray scattering and infrared spectroscopy revealed that there were no partial residual crystallites or regular chain conformation in our investigated SN melts. Based on the complex chain structure of our investigated sPP, we speculated that the heterogeneity in sPP melts was caused by the separation between the long crystallizable sequence and the atactic sequence.
Miscibility of Poly(ethyl Oxazoline)/poly(4-Vinylphenol) Blends As Investigated by the High-Resolution Solid-State 13C NMR

Abstract:The miscibility of poly(ethyl oxazoline) (PEOx) and poly(4-vinylphenol) (PVPh) blends were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and high-resolution solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. It was found that PEOx was miscible with PVPh as shown by the existence of single composition-dependent glass transition temperature (Tg) in the whole composition range. FTIR results revealed strong hydrogen bonding between the carbonyl groups of PEOx and the hydroxyl groups of PVPh. 13C cross-polarization (CP)/magic angle spinning (MAS)/dipolar decoupling (DD) spectra of the blends showed significant chemical shift changes, which support the FTIR results. The proton spin–lattice relaxation times in both the laboratory frame, T1(H), and the rotating frame, T1ρ(H), were studied as a function of blend composition, and blends gave values longer than pure polymers. The T1(H) results are in good agreement with the thermal analysis; i.e. the blends are completely homogenous on the scale of 30–40nm. The T1ρ(H) results further indicate that the blends were homogenous on the scale of 2–3nm.

Abstract:The knowledge of chain entanglement is key to our understanding of the relation between the viscoelastic properties of polymeric material and their microscopic structure and dynamics. This work conducted a detailed study on the role of short chains in the entangled polymer network. A series of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) mixtures with bimodal molecular weight distribution were selected for this study. <sup>1</sup>H double-quantum (DQ) NMR combined with the rheology measurement was used to investigate the entangled polymer network. We found that short-chain polymers have the potential to significantly alter the entangled polymer network formed by long-chain polymers. Additionally, both the amount of chain ends and the size of the short-chain polymer were found to have clear disentanglement influences on the entangled polymer network. Moreover, adding low molecular weight PEO to the entangle framework formed by the high molecular weight PEO, resulted in the formation of inhomogeneous entangled polymer networks. The effect of low molecular weight polymers on the entangled polymer networks in PEO melts provides a perspective on the molecular level effect of molecular weight distribution (MWD) on entanglement polymer networks.

Quantitatively Connecting Experimental Time-Temperature-Superposition-Breakdown of Polymers near the Glass Transition to Dynamic Heterogeneity via the Heterogeneous Rouse Model

Abstract:Polymers near the glass transition temperature Tg often exhibit a breakdown of time-temperature-superposition (TTS), with chain relaxation times and viscosity exhibiting a weaker temperature dependence than segmental relaxation times. The origin of this onset of thermorheological complexity has remained unsettled and a matter of debate. Here we extend the Heterogeneous Rouse Model (HRM), which generalizes the Rouse model to account for dynamic heterogeneity, to make predictions for the relaxation modulus G(t) and complex modulus G*($\omega$) of unentangled polymers near Tg. The HRM predicts that G(t) and G*($\omega$) exhibit enhanced effective scaling exponents in the Rouse regime in the presence of dynamic heterogeneity, with a more rapid decay from the glassy plateau emerging as the system becomes more dynamically heterogeneous on cooling. This behavior is predicted to emerge from a strand-length dependence of the moment of the segmental mobility distribution probed by chain dynamics. We show that the HRM predictions are in good accord with experimental complex modulus data for polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), and poly(2-vinyl pyridine). The HRM also predicts the onset of distinct temperature dependences among chain scale quantities such as terminal relaxation time and viscosity in our experimental systems, apparently resolving one of the most significant standing objections to a heterogeneity-based origin of TTS-breakdown. The HRM thus provides a generalized theory of the chain-scale linear rheological response of unentangled polymers near Tg, accounting for the origin of TTS-breakdown at a molecular mechanistic level. It also points towards a new strategy of inferring the dynamic heterogeneity of glass-forming polymeric systems based on the temperature-evolution of modified scaling in the Rouse regime.

PEO Temporary Network in PEO/PMMA Blends: NMR Approach

Abstract:Transverse magnetic relaxation properties of protons attached to PEO chains were investigated in compatible blends of hydrogenated PEO and deuterated PMMA by varying the PEO concentration and the temperature. The onset of segmental fluctuations is observed for samples that do not crystallize (φ ≤ 0.31); it occurs above T g(PEO) but below the blend glass transition temperature, T g(φ). At higher temperatures, for all concentrations, relaxation curves exhibit a solid-like behavior typical of a residual dipolar interaction due to the presence of a temporary network. The associated relaxation time obeys a linear temperature dependence with a reference at T g(φ) + T 0 and a linear variation with the mean segmental spacing between two consecutive entanglements along PEO chains, as calculated from the model proposed by Tsenoglou. This study extends the relationship between NMR properties and the network mesh size already observed in permanent gels and entangled homopolymers to miscible heteropolymers.
Dynamic Rheology and Dielectric Relaxation of Poly(vinylidene Fluoride)/poly(methyl Methacrylate) Blends

Abstract:The molecular relaxations in melt-extruded poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends with less than 40wt% PMMA were investigated using dynamic rheological measurement and broadband dielectric spectroscopy. According to dynamic rheology, the total chain entanglement density of the blend melts increased with adding PMMA, and the dissimilar chains were more likely to entangle with each other than similar ones. Furthermore, PMMA facilitated the relaxation process. The dielectric temperature spectra revealed strong structural heterogeneity in the semicrystalline blends whose αa and αc relaxations were accelerated by increasing PMMA content. The αa and αc relaxations were shown to follow the Vogel–Fulcher–Tamman and Arrhenius equations, which allows assigning their molecular origins clearly to amorphous PVDF interphase and the amorphous portions within the crystalline PVDF phase, respectively. However, there exist structural heterogeneities in amorphous PVDF/PMMA mixture phase associated to intermolecular entanglement between dissimilar chains, giving rise to one or two αm relaxations in the dielectric temperature spectra depending on the PMMA content.
Dynamics and order–disorder transitions in bidisperse diblock copolymer blends

Abstract:We employ the dynamic extension of self-consistent field theory (DSCFT) to study dynamics and order–disorder transitions (ODT) in AB diblock copolymer binary mixtures of two different monodisperse chain lengths by imitating the dynamic storage modulus G′ corresponding to any given morphology in the oscillatory shear measurements. The different polydispersity index (PDI) is introduced by binary blending AB diblock copolymers with variations in chain lengths and chain number fractions. The simulation results show that the increase of polydispersity in the minority or symmetric block introduces a decrease in the segregation strength at the ODT, (χN)ODT, whereas the increase of polydispersity in the majority block results in a decrease, then increase and final decrease again in (χN)ODT. To the best of our knowledge, our DSCFT simulations, for the first time, predict an increase in (χN)ODT with the PDI in the majority block, which produces the experimental results. The simulations by previous SCFT, which generally speaking, is capable of describing equilibrium morphologies, however, contradict the experimental data. The polydispersity acquired by properly tuning the chain lengths and number fractions of binary diblock copolymer blends should be a convenient and efficient way to control the microphase separation strength at the ODT.
Intermediate states in the melting process of low molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide)

Abstract:The melting behavior of low molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) fractions has been studied via generalized two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) correlation spectroscopy and a new stochastic-pulse-based temperature modulation differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique (TOPEM). 2D-IR correlation analysis of the melting of PEO shows that nu(s)(CH2) and gamma(a)(CH2) vary prior to nu(s)(COC). Moreover, the TOPEM experiments show that reversible melting and crystallization is occurring during the melting of PEO. These suggest that the melting of PEO is possibly a process passing over intermediate states. Based on our results, a model of the melting process of PEO lamellae is presented: the intermediate states containing the distorted helical conformation are formed first at the front of the lamellae during the melting process.
"High-entropy polymers": A new route of polymer mixing with suppressed phase separation

Abstract:Alloys and ceramics of multi-component compositions and hence having high entropy at random solution states recently received focused attentions. The present work emulates the "high-entropy" concept by using a common solvent to prepare polymer blends from a number of polymers, which shows interesting unique phenomena and promising properties. By investigating the heterogeneous domain size (Lambda) of thin solid films prepared by spin coating, we found that de-mixing, commonly observed in polymer blends, can be suppressed when the number of polymer species (n) in the blend increased. In binary blends (n = 2), de-mixing occurred, manifesting a wide spread of Lambda strongly influenced by the inter-segmental enthalpy and chain length. However, as n increased, the Lambda distribution shrank sharply by a declining upper edge, indicating significant de-mixing suppression. The suppression is attributable to high mixing entropy and a kinetic steric effect blocking like-polymer aggregation during film formation. The de-mixing suppression was found effective in dispersing poly(9,9'-dioctylfluorene), a conjugated polymer (CP), in the optically inert n = 5 blend where the CP molecules remained well separated, as shown spectroscopically, for CP fractions up to 50 wt.%, manifesting excellent efficiency performance.
Unraveling the glass-like dynamic heterogeneity in ring polymer melts: From semi-flexible to stiff chain

Abstract:Ring polymers are an intriguing class of polymers with unique physical properties, and understanding their behavior is important for developing accurate theoretical models. In this study, we investigate the effect of chain stiffness and monomer density on static and dynamic behaviors of ring polymer melts using molecular dynamics simulations. Our first focus is on the non-Gaussian parameter of center of mass displacement as a measure of dynamic heterogeneity, which is commonly observed in glass-forming liquids. We find that the non-Gaussianity in the displacement distribution increases with the monomer density and stiffness of the polymer chains, suggesting that excluded volume interactions between centers of mass have a stronger effect on the dynamics of ring polymers. We then analyze the relationship between the radius of gyration and monomer density for semi-flexible and stiff ring polymers. Our results indicate that the relationship between the two varies with chain stiffness, which can be attributed to the competition between repulsive forces inside the ring and from adjacent rings. Finally, we study the dynamics of bond-breakage virtually connected between the centers of mass of rings to analyze the exchanges of inter-molecular networks of bonds. Our results demonstrate that the dynamic heterogeneity of bond-breakage is coupled with the non-Gaussianity in ring polymer melts, highlighting the importance of bond-breaking method in determining the inter-molecular dynamics of ring polymer melts. Overall, our study provides insights into the fundamental mechanism of ring polymers and sheds light on the factors that govern their dynamic behavior.

Abstract:<p>In this work, the dynamic behavior of glass transition in a miscible blend of Poly (vinyl phenol) (PVPh)/ Poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) with a mass ratio of 3:1 (PVPh/PEO 75/25) were studied within a joint way of experimental and theoretical methods. The results showed the evidence for the influence of hydrogen bonding (HB) and Van der Waals (VdW) interaction between PVPh and PEO on the dynamic behavior in glass transition. The results reported here allows the opportunities for finding new blend dependent on this kind of interaction or design of special polymers to enhance such interactions.</p>
