Abstract:The urban heat island (UHI) effect is becoming an influential factor on the city's environment along with the rapid development of urbanization process. This paper uses Landsat-5 TM RS image of the year 1988, 2007 and 2010 based on NDVITEM model and land temperature retrieval method to obtain Beijing land surface temperature distribution map through digital image processing and land surface temperature(LST) retrieval calculating using thermal infrared(TIR) remotely sensed satellite observation. The analysis showcases that urban heat island effect in Beijing has been dramatically intensified since 1988. Especially in recent years, the urban heat island effect has become increasingly apparent and seriously affected human's health in the way of changing temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, wind as well as air.

Abstract:Urban heat island (UHI) is a major urban ecological environment issue, and it requires to be comprehensively understood from the perspective of temporal changes. This study investigated UHI in Beijing by building a monthly land surface temperature (LST) dataset at a fine spatial resolution in the summer from 2003 to 2018 using a data fusion method. First, we generated the monthly Landsat-like LST images. We then analyzed the temporal patterns of UHI in the past 16 years. Finally, we explored the spatial patterns of UHI. We find that UHI in Beijing experienced two phases, including the enhanced UHI concentrated in the urban area from 2003 to 2009, and the mitigated UHI dispersed in the suburban area from 2010 to 2018. The results of temporal trend analysis show that sub-districts with significant decreasing trends of UHI mainly locate in the urban center, while sub-districts with significant increasing trends of UHI mainly locate in the suburban areas. Moreover, the results of spatial clusters analysis demonstrate that the sub-districts with high UHIs concentrate in the urban center, while those with low UHIs disperse in the suburban area. The 16-year fine spatial resolution LSTs from this study offer a reliable dataset for studying the UHI in Beijing. The information on spatiotemporal patterns of UHI is of great help for urban planners to design UHI mitigation strategies for sustainable urban development.

Abstract:This article aims to examine the pathways of urban spatial forms in mitigating urban heat island (UHI) intensity across urban areas in different seasons. By investigating the case of Wuhan, we quantified urban spatial form (USF) factors concerning land use, land cover, and building-group morphology and the land surface temperatures (LST) in summer, autumn and winter of 2,357 block units. The seasonal relationships between USF and LST are explored at the large scale of the whole study area and different zones of block units categorized by floor area ratio. The results suggest that relationships between USF and LST vary spatially and temporally. First, although most urban spatial form factors show significant correlations on LST at the global scale, the correlations vary significantly among low, medium, and high floor-area-ratio zones. Second, USFs largely contribute to the variance of LST in summer and autumn compared with winter. Third, building morphology exerts more impact on LST in relatively highly intensive built-up zones, while land use and land cover factors have more impact in lowintensity areas. Lastly, UHI can be precisely mitigated by optimizing USFs considering the varied relationships between USFs and LST. This study theoretically deepens the understanding of the variation of the relationships between built-up urban areas and UHI at the scale of the basic planning regulation units, which is conducive to formulating down-to-earth regulation measures to cool cities and communities.

Abstract:This paper examines the response of the urban thermal environment to the centrality of urban spatial development. By investigating 27 cases of Chinese megacities, the study quantified the urban form centrality and the spatial pattern of land surface temperature (LST) within built-up areas. Specifically, urban form centrality was measured using the concentric-ring partitioning model, and the landscape metrics and Moran's I were employed to characterize the LST pattern. Then, the correlation between urban form centrality and the LST pattern was examined through ordinary least squares models and global and local bivariate Moran's I. There are three significant findings. First, the urban form centrality dominates the LST centrality along the urban-rural gradient. Second, stably concentric urban forms were inclined toward shape agglomerative and autocorrelated hot areas. Third, enhancing the intensity and reducing the stability of the urban form centrality are preferable to mitigate the urban thermal environment. Fourth, the green space should be embedded around the edge of the built-up area to increase the energy exchange surface. In general, this study has developed a nuanced understanding of the urban form and urban thermal environment and provide climate change adoption strategies for urban planning and public health policies.
Effects of Land Use on Land Surface Temperature: A Case Study of Wuhan, China

Abstract:In this study, we aim to understand the impact of land use on the urban heat island (UHI) effect across an urban area. Considering the case study of Wuhan, China, land use factors and land surface temperatures (LSTs) of 589 planning management units were quantified in order to identify the spatial autocorrelation of LST, which indicated that a traditional regression would be invalid. By investigating the relationships between land use factors and the LST in summer, based on spatial regression models including the spatial lag model and the spatial error model, four conclusions were derived. First, the spatial error model effectively explains the relationships between LST and land use factors. Second, the impact on LST of the percentage of industrial areas is significant even though the impacts of land cover and building-group morphology indicators are combined, indicating that anthropogenic heat emission of industrial production contributes to high LSTs. Third, the relationship between the percentage of commercial area and LST is significant in the Pearson correlation analysis and traditional regression models, while not significant in spatial error model, suggesting that the urban heat environment of a commercial area is determined by the land use factors of the surrounding area. Fourth, the UHI effect in industrial and commercial areas could be precisely mitigated by not locating industrial areas beside residential areas, and setting up buffer zones between commercial areas and surrounding traditional residential areas. Overall, the results of this study innovatively deepen the understanding of the impact of the percentage of different urban land use types on the urban heat environment at the scale of planning management units, which is conducive to formulating precise regulation measures for mitigating UHI effects and improving public health.

Abstract:Abstract This article is a quantitative study of the urban expansion of Beijing in the past two decades and its impact on the city’s heat island effect. The overall idea of this paper is a ‘basic fact description to phenomenon and law reveal-basic cause analysis-mechanism analysis-model simulation’. In this paper, the effects of urbanisation on warming in Beijing are deduced by nonlinear fitting method. Based on Google Earth Engine remote sensing image data within Beijing Inner Sixth Ring Road and using ArcGIS to retrieve Beijing’s surface temperature, the heat island effect intensity index is calculated. This paper quantitatively analyses the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics and development trends of Beijing’s urban heat island effect, combined with land use cover change (LUCC), Land Surface Temperature (LST), Normalised difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalised difference Building Index (NDBI), which can explore the impact of surface vegetation distribution and building density on the urban heat island effect.

Exploring the Configurational Relationships between Urban Heat Island Patterns and the Built Environment: A Case Study of Beijing

Abstract:The spatial heterogeneity of land surface temperature (LST) within cities is profoundly influenced by the built environment. Although significant progress has been made in the study of the urban thermal environment, there is still a lack of research on how the pattern and structural layout of the built environment affects the thermal environment. In this study, we take the Fifth Ring Road of Beijing as an example, invert the urban LST on the basis of multisource spatial data, characterize the built environment, and use k-means cluster analysis to investigate the main influencing factors of the LST in different functional areas and building patterns within the city, as well as the spatial relationship between the built environment and the urban LST. The results show the following: (1) The urban heat island (UHI) effect occurs to varying degrees over a large part of the study area, and these UHI areas are mainly concentrated in the southwestern part of the city, forming a large contiguous area between the second and fifth ring roads. (2) Class 1 is dominated by transport blocks, Class 3 is dominated by commercial blocks, and Class 5 is dominated by green space blocks, with a clustering index of 0.38. (3) The high-density, high-height class (HH-Class 2) has a greater number of blocks distributed in a ring shape around the periphery of the second ring road. The high-density, low-height class (HL-Class 2) has a relatively small number of blocks but a relatively large area, and the largest blocks are located in the western part of the study area. (4) In the HH and HL building patterns, extreme heat scenarios often occur; from the perspective of functional areas, the probability of extreme heat in the transport block is much higher than that of other functional areas, and except for the HH scenario, the green space functional area plays a very important role in reducing the temperature. This study explores the characteristics of the built environment that influence the urban LST from the perspective of different urban functional zones in cities to provide decision support for quantitative territorial spatial planning, optimization, and management.

Abstract:Urbanization has eco-environmental consequences; among which are effects on the urban thermal environment, which have drawn extensive attention especially in metropolitan regions having intensive population and high building density. In this study, the variation of the thermal environment during the urbanization process from 2001 to 2009 in the Beijing metropolitan region was evaluated using the spatial Lorenz curve and distribution index. In addition, the effects of landscape composition and spatial configuration on the thermal environment were investigated using correlation analysis and piecewise linear regression. The urban heat island (UHI) was found to be much more significant in summer than in spring, autumn and winter. Furthermore, the magnitude of the urban thermal environment in Beijing has increased during the process of urbanization. The suburban areas of Beijing, including the new urban development zone and ecological conservation zone, have increased the magnitude of the thermal environment. However, the opposite effect has occurred in the center of Beijing, including the core functional zone and urban function extended zone. Landscape types such as built-up areas and barren land make the most significant contribution to the thermal environment, whereas ecological land plays a significant role in mitigating the UHI. When the coverage of ecological land exceeded 70% (25km2) of the total land area, the cooling efficiency of this landscape type was relatively obvious, and the shape index and fragmentation index of landscape configuration both had a significantly positive correlation (0.594 and 0.510 Pearson's coefficients, respectively) with average land surface temperature. The Pearson's coefficient between the ecological land proportion and the average land surface temperature was 0.614 (P<0.01); this value was higher than that for the effects of the spatial configuration, indicating that landscape composition affects the thermal environment more than does spatial configuration.

Abstract:Beijing has experienced rapid urbanization and associated urban heat island (UHI) effects. This study aimed at analyzing the impact of urban form on UHI in Beijing using TM/ETM images between 1989 and 2010. Spatial analysis was proposed to explore the relationships between area, compactness ratio, the gravity centers of urban land, and UHI. The UHI in Beijing spatially represented a “NE-SW” spindle. The land surface temperature (LST) was higher in south than in north. Urban Heat Island Ratio Index (URI) was well interrelated with urban land area in different zones. Under the similar urban land area condition, UHI and compactness ratio of urban land were in positive correlation. The moving direction of the UHI gravity center was basically in agreement with urban land sprawl. The encroachment of urban land on suburban land is the leading source of UHI effect. The results suggest that urban design based on urban form would be effective for regulating the thermal environment.

Impacts of Urban Configuration on Urban Heat Island: an Empirical Study in China Mega-Cities

Abstract:Urban configuration can influence the local thermal environment by altering energy balances. However, previous studies have found that either sprawling urban or compact urban development could intensify urban heat island (UHI) intensity. How urban configurations can mitigate the UHI intensity has drawn full attention. In this study, we quantified the diurnal and seasonal UHI intensities in 36 cities in China and investigated their response to urban configurations. In each city, urban land cover maps were classified from Landsat 8 and UHIs were quantified using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land surface temperature (LST). Results show that the average UHI intensities of 36 cities vary temporally with a sequence of summer day > summer night > winter night > winter day. Moreover, whether the daytime UHI is higher or lower than the nighttime UHI significantly depends on climatic zones and seasons. Besides, we found that UHIs significantly correlate with urban configurations in two ways. First, for the spatial structure among built-up patches, a lower UHI located in the smaller built-up area with dispersed distribution when compared to the larger built-up patches, if the total built-up area holds constant. Second, for the spatial structure of a single patch, the single patch with more complex shape would mitigate the UHI intensities. Overall, urban configuration and other control variables (e.g., urban characteristics and climatic condition) can explain 41% and 51% of the variance in UHI in summer day and night, respectively. Therefore, the design of urban configuration can serve as an essential practice to mitigate UHI intensity. Considering the difficulties of altering the urban configuration in the urbanized area, planting vegetation might be a great choice to change the urban contiguity and shape complexity with providing an extra cooling effect. Abstract:The increasing degree of urbanization has continuously aggravated the surface urban heat island (sUHI) effect in China. To investigate the correlation between spatiotemporal changes of sUHI and urbanization in Beijing, land surface temperature in summer from 2000 to 2017 and the distribution of local climate zones (LCZs) in 2003, 2005, 2010, and 2017 was retrieved using remote sensing data and used to analyze the sUHI area and intensity change. The statistical method GeoDetector was utilized to investigate the explanatory ability of LCZs and population as the driving factors. The year of 2006 was identified as the main turning year for sUHI evolution. The variation the sUHI from 2000 showed first an increasing trend, and then a decreasing one. The sUHI pattern changed before and after 2009. Before 2009, the sUHI mainly increased in the suburbs, and then, the enhancement area moved to the central area. The sUHI intensity change under different LCZ conversion conditions showed that the LCZ conversion influences the sUHI intensity significantly. Based on population distribution data, we found that the relationship between population density and sUHI gets weaker with increasing population density. The result of GeoDetector indicated that the LCZ is the main factor influencing the sUHI, but population density is an important auxiliary factor. This research reveals the sUHI variation pattern in Beijing from 2000 and could help city managers plan thermally comfortable urban environments with a better understanding of the effect of urban spatial form and population density on sUHIs.

Abstract:With the increased urbanization in most countries worldwide, the urban heat island (UHI) effect, referring to the phenomenon that an urban area has higher ambient temperature than the surrounding rural area, has gained much attention in recent years. Given that Beijing is developing rapidly both in urban population and economically, the UHI effect can be significant. A long-term measured weather dataset from 1961 to 2014 for ten rural stations and seven urban stations in Beijing, was analyzed in this study, to understand the detailed temporal and spatial characteristics of the UHI in Beijing. The UHI effect in Beijing is significant, with an urban-to-rural temperature difference of up to 8 °C during the winter nighttime. Furthermore, the impacts of UHIs on building design and energy performance were also investigated. The UHI in Beijing led to an approximately 11% increase in cooling load and 16% decrease in heating load in the urban area compared with the rural area, whereas the urban heating peak load decreased 9% and the cooling peak load increased 7% because of the UHI effect. This study provides insights into the UHI in Beijing and recommendations to improve building design and decision-making while considering the urban microclimate.

Abstract:Urban heat island (UHI) shows thermal intensification in urban areas compared to surrounding areas. Land surface temperature (LST) has been widely applied in assessing UHI. However, due to limitations of the LST retrieval method, few researchers attempted to track the long-term dynamics of UHI and their responses to progressive urbanization process based on Landsat series data. In this study, we improved the retrieval method to extract the average UHI intensity of Hangzhou city core in 1990–2010, and explored the dynamics of UHI composition and configuration in response to urbanization. Google Earth Engine (GEE) was applied to calculate the average UHI intensity in the study area. Hangzhou city core was heating up in study period with extensive conversions from neutral and cool area to heated area. The expansion of heated area initially radiated from the original urban core in linear configuration, and subsequently expanded to infill areas away from the core by replacing neutral and cool area. The significant differences in average UHI intensity between different land use and land cover (LULC) types can be observed: urban land had the highest value whereas forest and water body registered the lowest. The expansion of urban land at the expense of natural land had exceeded a threshold to induce spillover of heat energy from the former to the latter. The findings can inform nature-based solutions to optimize the thermal environment and livability of fast-growing subtropical cities.
Spatiotemporal Evolution of the Urban Thermal Environment Effect and Its Influencing Factors: A Case Study of Beijing, China

Abstract:Rapid urbanization has led to significant changes in land surface temperature (LST), which in turn affect the urban thermal environment effect and the health of residents. Exploring the causes of the urban thermal environment effect will provide guidance for promoting sustainable urban development. The spatiotemporal evolution of the urban thermal environment effect within the sixth ring road of Beijing was analyzed by inversion of remote sensing data to obtain the LST in 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019. In addition, based on multivariate spatial data, we applied the standard deviation ellipse (SDE), spatial principal component analysis (PCA), and other methods to analyze and identify the relationships between the urban thermal environment effect and its influencing factors. The results show that from 2004 to 2019, the spatial distribution of urban development and LST within the sixth ring road of Beijing were closely related, the heat island area showed a small increasing trend, and differences in the thermal environment effect between different administrative regions in different periods were obvious. The main factors affecting the urban thermal environment effect were urban construction intensity, vegetation and water bodies, socioeconomic activities, and geomorphology. It is noteworthy that human factors had a greater impact than natural factors. Among them, the positive effect of the normalized difference impervious surface index (NDBBI) and the negative effect of the fractional vegetation cover (FVC) were the most prominent. This study provides theoretical support for mitigating the urban thermal environment effect and promoting sustainable urban development.
Influence of Urban Scale and Urban Expansion on the Urban Heat Island Effect in Metropolitan Areas: Case Study of Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei Urban Agglomeration

Abstract:Global large-scale urbanization has a deep impact on climate change and has brought great challenges to sustainable development, especially in urban agglomerations. At present, there is still a lack of research on the quantitative assessment of the relationship between urban scale and urban expansion and the degree of the urban heat island (UHI) effect, as well as a discussion on mitigation and adaptation of the UHI effect from the perspective of planning. This paper analyzes the regional urbanization process, average surface temperature variation characteristics, surface urban heat island (SUHI), which reflects the intensity of UHI, and the relationship between urban expansion, urban scale, and the UHI in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) urban agglomeration using multi-source analysis of data from 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015. The results show that the UHI effect in the study area was significant. The average surface temperature of central areas was the highest, and decreased from central areas to suburbs in the order of central areas > expanding areas > rural residential areas. From the perspective of spatial distribution, in Beijing, the southern part of the study area, the junction of Tianjin, Langfang, and Cangzhou are areas with intense SUHI. The scale and pace of expansion of urban land in Beijing were more than in other cities, the influencing range of SUHI in Beijing increased obviously, and the SUHI of central areas was most intense. The results indicate that due to the larger urban scale of the BTH urban agglomeration, it will face a greater UHI effect. The UHI effect was also more significant in areas of dense distribution in cities within the urban agglomeration. Based on results and existing research, planning suggestions are proposed for central areas with regard to expanding urban areas and suburbs to alleviate the urban heat island effect and improve the resilience of cities to climate change.

Spatial-temporal patterns of summer urban islands and their economic implications in Beijing

Abstract:Urban heat island (UHI) has a great influence on human wellbeing in urban areas. Previous studies have investigated impact on environment, ecosystem, and human health of UHI. To investigate economic impact of UHI is a lack of research. In this study, spatial-econometric hedonic housing price models are developed for estimating the marginal value of summer UHI in Beijing, China. The results showed that UHI effects in Beijing became severe from 2015 to 2017. The heat islands showed a mix of high and sub-high land surface temperature (LST). The spatial Durbin model estimates that one-unit increase of UHI intensity (UHII) would lower the housing value by 3.91%. Regarding the different districts, households had different attitudes to the UHI effect. Specifically, households regarded UHI effect as amenity in the four suburban districts with hills and relatively low LSTs; however, in most urban districts and their surroundings, households were willing to pay to avoid UHI effects with 13.0 dollars to 826.3 dollars for one-degree UHII decrease. This study highlights the urgent need for planners and decision-makers to consider urban expansion, UHI effect, and their economic impact in future urban planning.

Abstract:To quantitatively investigate the process of urbanization in Beijing and its influence on the warming effect, DMSP-OLS Nighttime Lights products, land use statistical data and meteorological station routine observation data combined with MODIS land surface temperature (LST) products and MODIS land cover products have been exploited. It turned out that from 2000 to 2010 the urban area in Beijing has expanded rapidly in an area pattern; the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect's contribution to the area climate tendency is positively correlated with the index of urbanization as well as the logarithm of the permanent residential population of the city which means during this period the expansion of the construction land area is forming the thermal environment of this area and the warming trend is significant.
The influences of 2D/3D urban morphology on land surface temperature at the block scale in Chinese megacities

Abstract:Urban heat island (UHI) effects in core areas of megacities pose significant challenges to human health, energy consumption, and air quality. Investigating the relationship between urban morphology indicators and land surface temperature (LST) at the block scale is crucial for targeted urban planning strategies. This study examines the impact of morphology indicators on LST in central Beijing and Shanghai from 2000 to 2020 using the boosted region trees (BTR) model. Results showed: (1) LST increased in both cities in winter and summer, with high-value areas expanding spatially; (2) Comprehensive average impact degree of Beijing and Shanghai in winter and summer, Building density (BD) was the most important factor affecting LST, with 3D building forms being significant; (3) Impact hierarchy on LST: building form > landscape type > land cover type > social development; (4) The relationship between BD, ISA, and LST shifted from negative to positive with increasing values, while SHDI, GS, FAI, AI, and BH relationships with LST turned from positive to negative as values rose. This study highlights addressing UHI effects at the block scale in core urban areas, providing insights for urban planning and sustainable development.

Abstract:Ongoing urban expansion has accelerated the explosive growth of urban populations and has led to a dramatic increase in the impervious surface area within urban areas. This, in turn, has exacerbated the surface heat island effect within cities. However, the importance of the surface heat island effect within urban areas, scilicet the intra-SUHI effect, has attracted less concern. The aim of this study was to quantitatively explore the relationship between the spatial heterogeneity of a built environment and the intra-urban surface heat island (intra-SUHI) effect using the thermally sharpened land surface temperature (LST) and high-resolution land-use classification products. The results show that at the land parcel scale, the parcel-based relative intensity of intra-SUHI should be attributed to the land parcels featured with differential land developmental intensity. Furthermore, the partial least squares regression (PLSR) modeling quantified the relative importance of the spatial heterogeneity indices of the built environment that exhibit a negative contribution to decreasing the parcel-based intra-SUHI effect or a positive contribution to increasing the intra-SUHI effect. Finally, based on the findings of this study, some practical countermeasures towards mitigating the adverse intra-SUHI effect and improving urban climatic adaption are discussed.

Abstract:Taking effective measures to solve thermal environment problems in summer and reduce their impacts on citizens requires a more comprehensive understanding of urban heat islands (UHI) morphology and exposure. Therefore, selecting Beijing as the study area, a framework was created to portray UHI morphology evolution in terms of distribution, expansion type, and topological structure from 2000 to 2020. Then, using the population-weighted model and relative exposure risk model, the UHI exposure was explored at the city and raster scales. The results showed that the longtime-series and multi-perspective analysis on morphology can provide a deeper understanding of UHI evolution characteristics and help propose targeted mitigation strategies. Specifically, the UHI scale in Beijing grew significantly, dominated by the edge-expansion type, and the topological structure of the main heat island performed more complicated from single-core to multi-core. Moreover, the cross-scale assessment of UHI exposure can derive the overall exposure conditions and the local heat risk levels. The overall UHI exposure in Beijing deteriorated significantly from 2005 to 2010, with a slight improvement after 2010, and the higher risk areas were mainly concentrated within the urban center region. Our study can provide governments and planners important insights and help propose scientific UHI mitigation measures.
