Abstract:In this study, the interaction between a diester amide Gemini surfactant (C 12 –E 2 Ph–C 12 ) and the non-ionic polymer polyethylene glycol (PEG) with average molecular weights of 6000 g mol −1 and 10,000 g mol −1 was investigated using the surface tension method. The study showed no discernible interaction between them. Further examinations, using surface tension, micropolarity and turbidity methods were conducted to investigate the interaction between C 12 –E 2 Ph–C 12 and the anionic polymer sodium alginate (NaAlg). C 12 –E 2 Ph–C 12 and NaAlg molecules bind together to form aggregates with a pearl necklace-like structure, driven by electrostatic attraction. This interaction is evident in both the surface tension and micropolarity curves, where double plateaus appear. The inorganic salt NaCl exhibited a dual influence on the interaction between C 12 –E 2 Ph–C 12 and NaAlg, manifesting as either salt enhancement or reduction, depending on their competitive effects. Additionally, the dyeing performance of the different surfactants on two types of dyes was investigated using a colorimeter. C 12 –E 2 Ph–C 12 showed favorable effects on dyeing uniformity, color fastness, and improvement of hair tensile strength. Hair dyeing results were satisfactory when C 12 –E 2 Ph–C 12 was included as a uniform coloring agent and NaAlg was used as a thickening agent in the hair dye formulation.

Abstract:The synthesis of a series of N-mono-and bis-alkylated derivatives of 4,5-diamino-1,-8-dihydroxyanthraquinone is described. These compounds dye synthetic polymer fibres in blue to greenish-blue shades of good fastness properties; bis-alkylation results in decreased substantivity, but excellent dyes result from the use of mixtures of mono-and bis-alkylated derivatives.

Abstract:Melanin exists widely in nature and can afford a variety of colors from black to brown and red according to chemical structure differences and specific mixtures. Inspired by nature, this work reports that tyrosine derivatives with different protecting groups at its N- or C-terminal can be enzymatically oxidized into melanin-like pigments with a wide range of colors. The emergence of colorful pigments can be attributed to the incomplete enzymatic oxidation and polymerization caused by the chemical premodification of the tyrosine molecule. The pigments can be deposited on the surface of the hair to obtain a series of colorful and saturated hair dye effects. Moreover, after the pigments were coated on the hair, we can further deposit silver nanoparticles through in situ reduction, making these coatings have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial potential, thereby expanding their potential use for people with low immunity or those who work in hospitals. Abstract:Degradation of two textile dyes, C.I.Acid Orange 7 (Orange II) and C.I. Reactive Red 2 (Procion Red MX-5B) bound to silica gel and cellulose by hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by Fe (III) complexed to Tetra-Amido Macrocyclic Ligands (Fe-TAML activators) at pH 10 was investigated. The performance of the oxidising system was characterized by conducting batch and column experiments. C.I.Acid Orange 7 and C.I. Reactive Red 2 on solid matrix after the addition of the Fe-TAML/H2O2 decolourize in initial time period of 10-20 minutes. The decolourisation rate of dyes on silica gel or on cellulose respectively was much slower than that in aqueous solution. On the silica gel. the degradation mechanism is the same as observed in aqueous solutions, first step is likely the formation of reactive species and the second step is the interaction of the reactive part with the desorbed dyes structure to release various species. The finding about decolourisation of the dyed cellulose leads to the conclusion that that Fe-TAML molecules must enter into the microfibril of cellulose and approach closely to the dye. Thus, the catalyst is not able to completely degrade the dye while bound to a fabric of structure such as cellulose.

Abstract:Natural colorants could serve as a bio-based alternative for synthetic textile dyes. Most natural colorants exhibit limited affinity to cellulosic fibres. As a result only light shades are obtained and the efficiency in use of the valuable plant extracts is low. By addition of a cationic polymer to the viscose spin dope regenerated cellulose, fibres with incorporated cationic groups are obtained. The presence of accessible cationic sites increases sorption of natural dyes substantially. In dyeing experiments with extracts from canadian goldenrod, green nut shell and ashes bark darker dyeings were obtained the modified viscose fibres compared to results on cotton or viscose fibres. The higher sorption of the natural dyes can be explained with dissociation of the extracted natural dye molecules under dyebath conditions. The formation of negatively charged dye molecules was confirmed with model calculations for species distribution using representative natural dye molecules as examples. The results indicate a strategy for a more economic use of plant based colorants, which is a condition for wider use of this renewable dye source.

Abstract:Due to the damage of scalp because of chemical dyes, increasing attention had been paid to the ecological dyeing of human hair. To address the need for ecological restoration and dyeing of human hair, herein, a novel approach has been proposed via laccase-mediated in situ oxidation of dihydroxy phenylalanine (dopamine). As laccase can catalyze dopamine oxidation and then polymerization to produce strongly colored polymers, different biological coloration processes of human hair based on this process were investigated: (i) Human hair was treated with laccase alone; (ii) The absorption of human hair with dopamine, followed by further catalysis of air; (iii) The absorption of human hair with dopamine, followed by further catalysis of laccase; (iv) Simultaneous laccase-mediated polymerization and dyeing of human hair; and (v) Polymerization of Dopamine with laccase and then dyeing human hair. The surface properties of dyed hair were evaluated in terms of ultraviolet (UV)-protection, color fastness, Fourier transforming infrared spectrum (FT-IR), optical microscope, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that best hair dyeing effect was achieved via simultaneous laccase-mediated polymerization and dyeing. The dyed hair obtained K/S values of 28, light fastness of level 5, and UPF of 100+. The optical microscope and SEM observations show that the surface of colored hair fibers was covered with thin burrs, which can be attributed to polydopamine attached with physical adhesive force and covalent reaction. FT-IR analysis shows that functional groups were present on the surface of the dyed hair which can be considered as introduction of hydroxyl radical groups. This biological stain technique may be widely used in dyeing of hair with black color.

Abstract:Human hair is naturally colored by melanin pigments, which afford myriad colors from black, to brown, to red depending on the chemical structures and specific blends. In recent decades, synthetic efforts have centered on dopamine oxidation to polydopamine, an effective eumelanin similar to the one found in humans. To date, only a few attempts at polydopamine deposition on human hair have been reported, and their translation to widespread usage and potential commercialization is still hampered by the harsh conditions employed. We reasoned that novel, mild, biocompatible approaches could be developed to establish a metal-free route to tunable, nature-inspired, long-lasting coloration of human hair. Herein, we describe synthetic and formulation routes to achieving this goal and show efficacy on a variety of human hair samples via multiple spectroscopic and imaging techniques. Owing to the mild and inexpensive conditions employed, this novel approach has the potential to replace classical harsh hair dyeing conditions that have raised concerns for several decades due to their potential toxicity.Synthetic melanin nanoparticle coatings on hair surfaces successfully reverse the appearance of melanin loss and hair whitening and provides a novel biomimetic and nontoxic approach to hair dyeing.

Abstract:Sorption thermodynamics and kinetics of 100 % artificial keratin fibers with acid dyes have been studied to understand the surface properties, dyeability, and suitability for industrial applications. For a sustainable textile fiber industry, affordable biobased fibers with good dyeability and performance properties are essential for commercial acceptance. Artificial keratin fibers developed from waste feathers have already demonstrated excellent strength and wet stability due to their high degree of disulfide crosslinkages and can be cost-effective as well. However, their dyeability and related dyeing characteristics compared to conventional protein fibers need to be evaluated before they can be used in everyday textiles. To characterize the dye sorption chemistry, there are many thermodynamic and kinetic equations used in the literature some of which can lead to erroneous conclusions. In this study appropriate formulas based on fundamental principles are used to understand the physicochemical interactions between dyes and fibers. Essential thermodynamic and kinetic parameters were determined using Acid Orange 10 and Acid Blue 25 as dye precursors. The calculated standard affinity and equilibrium sorption capacity of artificial keratin fibers were found to be 1.84–4.24 kJ/mol and 57.95–178.37 mg/g which are lower than wool but higher than silk. Using multiple terms from Crank's equation non-linear regression fitting was performed to obtain the diffusion coefficient values ranging 1.6–4.2 × 10 −13 m 2 /s in artificial keratin fibers. Kinetic study revealed that the sorption rates of acid dyes are higher in artificial keratin fibers compared to wool and silk. With comparable colorfastness to common protein fibers and >95 % strength retention after dyeing, artificial keratin fibers demonstrate its suitability for various textile applications.

Abstract:Hair dyeing has become a prevalent lifestyle trend, especially within the fashion industry. However, it possesses disadvantages, such as containing carcinogenic and toxic materials. In this study, we developed a biocompatible hair-dyeing technology using a shampoo with a dark polyphenol complex (DPC), referred to as S-DPC. The DPC was formed from a mixture of gallic acid and [1,1′-biphenyl]-2,2′,4,4′,5,5′-hexol and used to enhance both the stability of the hair coating and its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS). Colloidal DPC particles play a pivotal role in the coating process of various hair dyes, ensuring the uniform coloring of human hair through intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding. Owing to the effect of a polyphenol complex on hair coating, we observed improved antistatic performance and enhanced mechanical strength, resulting in a substantial increase in elongation at the breaking point from 33.74% to 48.85%. The multicolor S-DPC exhibited antioxidant properties, as indicated by its ROS-scavenging ability, including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl inhibition (87–89%), superoxide radical scavenging (84–87%), and hydroxyl radical scavenging (95–98%). Moreover, the in vitro analysis of the DPC revealed nearly 100% cell viability in live and dead assays, highlighting the remarkable biocompatibility of the DPC. Therefore, considering its effectiveness and safety, this biomaterial has considerable potential for applications in hair dyeing.
Chromophores in spinning dopes of cellulose and imidazolium ionic liquids

Abstract:Spinning of cellulose dissolved in 3-alkyl-1-methylimidazolium ionic liquids is a current approach to manmade cellulosic fibers. To curb cellulose degradation in the dope, stabilizers have to be used. Generation of chromophores in the dope and the resulting fibers is unavoidable, with most of the discoloration resulting from the employed antioxidants. In the present work, the chemical structures of the chromophores derived from the most common "green" stabilizers currently used, namely propyl gallate (a gallic acid derivative), hydroxytyrosol (and antioxidant from olives), and tocopheramines (vitamin E derivatives), were elucidated by a combination of analytical techniques and final confirmation by comparison with independently synthesized samples. While most compounds are oxidation and rearrangement products of the antioxidants themselves, coupling products with the ionic liquid ́s imidazolium cations were also found. Identification of the colored compounds is a critical issue for both the optimization of fiber bleaching steps and solvent purification/recovery in the spinning process. Now that the nature of the generated chromophores is known, milder yet more effective bleaching treatments can be developed and solvent purification/recycling can be specifically optimized.

Abstract:There is a growing interest in using naturally-occurring plant colorants as alternative to the toxic synthetic colors for hair coloration. However, poor color reproducibility and color fastness on the human hair remain a constant problem for natural hair dyeing. This study presents a systematic investigation into the dyeing performances of dye extracts of four hair dye plants (henna, walnut husks, sappanwood and Chinese gallnuts) for hair coloration with the focus on their photostability on the dyed human hair and the underlying mechanisms. First, the optimal dyeing conditions for each of the four plant colorants were obtained on yak hairs by assessing the effects of different dyeing variables ( i.e. metallic mordants, mordant concentrations, mordanting methods and pHs) on color strength and CIE coordinates. Then, the plant colorants with ferrous mordant as the most influential metallic mordant to produce dark colors were investigated in terms of dyeability and photostability on human bleached hairs and natural gray hairs. The results demonstrated that the photosensitivity of naturally dyed human hairs is related to the nature of both hair dye colorant and the dyeing substrate. ESR measurement and fluoresce probing of hydroxyl radicals in hair fibers revealed that dyeing human hairs with natural plant colorants can inhibit, to varying extents, the photogeneration of oxidative radicals in human hairs, which may in turn provide the dyed human hairs with certain photo-protecting effects.

Abstract:Some heteropolyfunctional reactive dyes (5a-5n) containing poly(monochlorotriazine and sulfatoethylsulfone) reactive systems have been synthesized by coupling of tetrazotized 4,4'-methylene bis(2-carboxy aniline) with various 4-(ethylsulfurate sulfonyl)anilino cyanurated coupling components (4a-4n) such as H-acid, Gamma acid, J-acid, N-methyl J-acid, N-phenyl J-acid, Chicago acid, S-acid, K-acid, Bronner acid, Peri acid, Laurent acid, Koch acid, Naphthionic acid, and Tobias acid. The synthesized dyes were characterized by nitrogen elemental analysis, IR, and 1H-NMR spectra. They were applied on wool, silk, and cotton fibers. Their dyeing properties, fastness properties, and colorimetric data (L*, a*, b*, C*, H*, and K/S) have also been investigated.

Abstract:Our laboratory has a strong interest in the Maillard reaction, a food coloring reaction, and has successfully used the Maillard reaction to color not only protein materials such as wool, silk, and leather, but also polyamide fiber with amino groups. However, it also became clear that very long reaction times, such as several days, are required to color theses fibers in dark colors. Interestingly, when the glucose oxides obtained by the Fenton reaction, one of chemical oxidations, was used instead of glucose, the coloring time was greatly reduced, and it became possible to color wool dark brown in a reaction time of about 2 hours. Since the Fenton reaction is highly reactive and cannot selectively oxidize the hydroxyl group of reducing sugars, it is assumed that the reaction solution also contains oxidized products of reducing sugars that are not involved in pigment formation. If the oxidized products of reducing sugars not involved in pigmentation can be reduced, further darkening of the wool can be expected. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the coloration of wool using inositol, a cyclic sugar alcohol. Since the hydroxyl groups of inositol are each present in a close chemical environment, the amount of byproducts from the Fenton reaction is expected to be suppressed. In fact, when wool was colored with inositol oxides obtained by the Fenton reaction, it was colored darker than the oxides of glucose having the same carbon number, and it was possible to color wool with a color close to black in about 2 hours of reaction time.

Abstract:Continuous growth in textile, paper, rubber, and plastic industries has promoted a significant amount of pollutant dye emanations from wastewater streams, increasing the demand for a sustainable approach to dye removal. In this study, cellulose-incorporated sodium alginate and kaolin hydrogels were used as an adsorbent for the decolorization of carcinogenic Congo red dye. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) data of prepared hydrogel suggested that the surface consisted (N–H, C = O, C≡N, C = C) bonds and according to the Point of Zero Charge (PZC) study at 7.783 pH, the surface charge became zero and the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data suggested maximum decomposition at 336.083 °C and the residual hydrogel remained was 64.545% of the initial. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was done to study the surface morphology properly. The removal efficiency was properly examined with the help of batch study by varying parameters such as adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of pollutant dye, temperature, pH of the dye solution, and agitation speed. The experimental data of the batch study suggested the highest removal of 98.437% for 20 g/L adsorbent dosage at 303 K with dye solution of initial concentration 20 mg/L and at pH 6 after adsorption. The adsorption data revealed more similarity for the Freundlich model ( ) than the Langmuir model. The temperature data seem to be more inclined towards pseudo-second-order kinetics ( ) than pseudo-first-order kinetics. Thermodynamic analysis data gave a negative Gibbs free energy value with a positive value of Enthalpy. The isosteric heat was found to be 24.025 kJ/mole. The above-mentioned studies established the fact that the prepared hydrogels are effective, environment-friendly adsorbents for Congo red dye removal due to their high affinity towards the pollutants present in wastewater. A regeneration study using salt and base established the adsorbents to be efficient enough to run batch experiments multiple times effectively.

Abstract:Spinning of cellulosic fibers requires the prior dissolution of cellulose. 3-Alkyl-1-methylimidazolium ionic liquids have proven to be suitable solvents for that purpose, but the degradation of cellulose in the spinning dope can be severe. Suitable stabilizers are therefore required that prevent cellulose degradation, but do not adversely affect spinnability or the long-term yellowing behavior of the fibers. A group of twelve renewables-based antioxidants was selected for stabilizing 5% cellulose solutions in the ionic liquids and their effects on cellulose integrity, dope discoloration, and aging behavior were tested by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and ISO brightness measurements. Propyl gallate (a gallic acid derivative), hydroxytyrosol (from olives), and tocopheramines (a vitamin E derivative) performed best in the three test categories, minimizing both cellulose degradation, chromophore formation in the spinning dope, and yellowing upon accelerating aging of the spun fibers. The use of these stabilizers for cellulose solutions in the imidazolium-based solvent system can therefore be recommended from the point of view of both performance and sustainability.

Abstract:Cyanine-based cationic dyes with different substituents in the donor unit were easily synthesized using readily available starting materials. The prepared dye molecules were spectroscopically characterized by NMR, FT-IR, and HR-Mass, and their thermal stability was measured by TGA, DSC, and XRD. Based on the TGA and DSC measurements, it was concluded that all the dyes are thermally stable up to 200 °C. Also, powder XRD was studied for all dyes to identify the explicit crystallinity and morphological nature of the dyes. A dye dispersion solution was prepared for the proper dyeing of modacrylic fabric and the dyed fabric showed good color strength K/S for dyes R1 , R2, and R6 and fragile color strength for R3, R4 ,and R5 . These dyes are also used for printing on substrates like paper and fabric using ink-jet printing. These dyes were also used for transferability printing applications on various fabrics.

Abstract:In the present study, an extracellular alkali stable laccase (Lac DS) from Bacillus subtilis DS which has pH optima at 8.5 using p-phenylenediamine (PPD) as substrate has been reported. Lac DS retained 70% activity for 4 h at pH 8.5 and 90% activity for 24 h at 55 °C. The enzyme yield was enhanced by optimization of fermentation conditions. A 746-fold increase in yield was observed under optimized conditions using 150 µM MgSO4, 1.2% yeast extract, 0.35% tryptone, and 150 µM vanillic acid. Lac DS was used to polymerize natural dye precursor catechol, pyrogallol, syringaldehyde, syringic acid, ferulic acid and gallic acid to develop a range of natural hair colors such as black, golden yellow, and reddish brown. The results indicate that alkaline Lac DS is a suitable candidate to develop a user-friendly and commercially applicable hair dyeing process in the area of cosmetic industry.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The interest toward dyeing hairs with plant colorants has grown in popularity considering its low-toxic nature. However, researches reporting plant hair dyes are limited and the potential adverse effects of irritation are unclear.OBJECTIVES: This study is aimed to provide an avenue by which to more accurately assess the dyeing efficiency and irritation potentials of plant hair dyes.METHODS: Four extracted plant colorants were incorporated in hydrogel hair dyes that were directly applied on unbleached gray human hairs. Their dyeing performances and the effect of an iron (Ⅱ) mordant were photometrically measured in CIELab coordinates and color strength. The eye and skin irritancy was assessed by combining various in vitro methods, including bovine corneal opacity and permeability (BCOP) assay in combination with histopathological analysis, Hen's egg test on chick chorioallantoic membrane (HET-CAM) and a test on reconstructed human epidermis models.RESULTS: The investigated hair dyes exhibited desirable dyeing efficiency on human hairs. Post-treatment with the iron (Ⅱ) mordant caused a significant increase in color strength with subtle changes to the hue of dyed color. In the irritation testing, the four hair dyes were categorized as slight-to-mild eye irritants but possessed no skin irritation potential, while the mordant was determined as a non-irritant.CONCLUSIONS: The results demonstrate the efficacy of a multi-analytical approach for in vitro assessment of various plant colorants for hair dyeing. The investigated plant extracts are suitable for producing viable colors on human hairs and may serve as a low-irritating alternative to the synthetic hair dyes.

Abstract:Azo dyes are widely used for dyeing polyester fabrics but require optimization of properties like color strength and fastness. Fourteen novel disperse azo dyes were synthesized from 2,3-naphthalenediol and aniline derivatives to examine their potential for polyester dyeing. The dyes were prepared via diazotization and coupling reactions and characterized using FT-IR, UV-Vis, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and elemental analysis. Furthermore, several techniques were employed to study the azo-hydrazone tautomerism, including UV-Vis spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and computational methods. DFT computations revealed hydrazone tautomers were more stable than azo tautomers. The prepared azo dyes were applied on polyester fabrics at 2% depth using a high temperature pressure technique in water utilizing DYEWELL-002 as a dispersing agent. The color shading of dyed polyester samples ranged from peach amber to apple of my eye, depending on the coupler moieties. The fastness properties, assessed using a grey scale of dyed polyester fabrics, indicated very good to excellent grades for most dyes. Additionally, measurements of color strength (K/S), dye exhaustion (%E), as well as colorimetric colors CILAB of dyed polyester fabrics values, were measured and discussed in terms of the effect of substituents. The findings provide new insights into structure-performance relationships to design optimized disperse dyes for polyester coloration. Overall, the synthesized aryldiazenyl dyes are promising candidates for dyeing polyester fabrics across a spectrum of shades with good fastness properties.
