Abstract:Both wood and bamboo are natural green biomaterials with a long application history in human society. A novel bamboo-wood composite fabricated with glued laminated bamboo (glubam) and laminated veneer lumber (LVL) was developed to reduce wood resource demand and to promote bamboo utilization efficiency. Experimental and analytical investigations were conducted to study the mechanical performance of 36 bamboo-wood composite columns with different slenderness ratios under axial compression. The three-layer composite column was composed of glubam as outer layers and LVL as a core layer, with horizontal or vertical configurations respectively. The failure modes, ultimate capacity, load and deformation behaviour were evaluated. Strength failure was the typical failure mode of the short columns while buckling was commonly observed for the longer columns. Columns with vertical LVL core had overall better performed with higher compressive strength than the ones with horizontal LVL core configuration. The ultimate load of the composite columns with thin-strip glubam as outer layers were increased by 31.6 % to 45.3 % than those of thick-strip glubam as outer layers. The compressive capacity of the specimens predicted according to three standards were compared with the experimental results. An improved expression considers the material strength and column slenderness ratio was proposed, which provides a better prediction than the current design standards.

Abstract:This research experimentally investigates the mechanical properties of aged unidirectional engineered bamboo (EB) laminate, pivotal in constructing glued laminated bamboo (glubam) structures. Investigations encompassed both outdoor exposure and artificial accelerated aging tests. In particular, outdoor exposure spanning three six-month intervals from July 2019 to December 2020. Complementarily, the Boil-Test (BT) method, as per the BS EN1087–1 standard, was employed for accelerated aging. The research examined tension, compression, bending, and shear mechanical characteristics of the aged bamboo samples. Notably, failure modes were predominantly influenced by fiber, matrix, and interfacial lamination layers. Findings revealed the superior anti-aging capacity of bamboo fibers compared with than that of bamboo matrix and lamination layer. Bamboo fibers maintaining over 75% of their original tensile strength. The BT accelerated aging method gave conservative estimations compared to outdoor exposure tests. Conclusively, the research yielded a novel tri-linear stress-strain model for analyzing the bending performance of glubam structures under varying aging conditions. This model incorporated strength reduction factors derived from the experimental data obtained from the corresponding compression and tension tests.

Abstract:In order to study the mechanical behavior of glue laminated bamboo I-joists,30 glue laminated bamboo I-joists were designed with three kinds of span,and finger joints were set at different locations of the specimens.The loading experiments were performed by using four-point loading method.The failure modes,failure mechanism,cross section stiffness and load bearing capacity were investigated.It is concluded that the section strain is in linear distribution along the height of section according to the plane section assumption,and cross section stiffness can meet the requirements of specification for wood I-beams.Load bearing capacity of glue laminated bamboo I-joist is mainly limited by the performance of web and the strength of the finger joint of web and flange.Based on the load bearing capacity calculation formula recommended in Canadian standard and stress analysis of finger joints,the calculated load bearing capacities of specimens are reasonably close to experimental results.

Abstract:This paper reports tensile and compressive test results of bolted glubam (glued laminated bamboo) connections. The tensile tests were carried out with two types of specimens designed for tensile loadings in the longitudinal and transverse directions in relevance to the orientations of the bidirectional bamboo strips (fibers). In each direction, the specimens were further divided into nine groups according to different combination conditions of end and edge spacings. Compressive tests were executed for three groups of bolted glubam connections, with varying thickness of the main board and bolting conditions. The tensile experiments show that the failure of the specimens is strongly influenced by the loading directions. Recommended end distance and side distance are provided, whereas the load carrying capacity is analyzed. Based on the compressive testing results, failure modes and load displacement relationships are analyzed, in which the yield bearing capacity is shown to be close to that given by the equations in existing design specifications for timber structure.

Abstract:Applying bamboo in construction is expected to reduce carbon footprint and promote environmental protection. Very limited information is available in the literature about the shear behavior of glued laminated bamboo (glubam, i.e., a type of engineered bamboo) beams. To this end, this paper presents an experimental investigation of shear behavior for full-scale glubam beams using three-point loading test. Fourteen specimens were tested, considering the effect of shear span-depth ratio (a/d) and beam depth on the shear response of glubam beams. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique was conducted to measure the strain fields on two specimens with different shear span-depth ratios. The test results show that the glubam beams with a/d= 1.0 occurred local compressive damage at the loading region and the mixed local compression-flexure damage; and beams with a/ d= 2.0 exhibited flexure-dominated damage together with a minor local compressive settlement at the loading region. Specifically, increasing the shear span-depth ratio reduces the load capacity but improves the ductility and minimizes the global damage in the glubam beam. Larger shear area of the beam has a smaller shear stress, which demonstates the scale effect on the shear behavior of the glubam beam. DIC technique is feasible for monitoring the shear behavior of glubam beams with a small shear span-depth ratio. Meanwhile, this technique can also be employed for the beams with a relatively large shear span-depth ratio to monitor the shear behavior at a relatively small deformation.

Abstract:Glued laminated bamboo (glubam) moment-resisting connections, in the forms of bamboo-steel-bamboo (BSB) and steel-bamboo-steel (SBS) connections, were studied in this research. The monotonic and cyclic loading experiments with two types of bamboo panels, unidirectional and multidirectional laminated bamboo, were performed. Test results demonstrated that the off-axis embedment behaviors of bamboo panels significantly influence the mechanical properties of glubam moment-resisting connections. The brittle splitting/shear failure modes can be avoided by using multidirectional laminated bamboo panels. The ultimate bearing strength of the multidirectional laminated bamboo connections was 2.5 times that of the unidirectional one. The application of multidirectional laminated bamboo rather than the unidirectional one in moment-resisting connections significantly improved the energy dissipated ability and ductility ratios from 1.5 to 1.9. Thus, the multidirectional panels were suggested to be used for the structural components with complex stress fields. Methods were also suggested to determine the test curves' initial stiffness and yield moment points. A simplified calculation method of moment-resisting capacities based on the European yield model (EYM), considering the off-axis embedment strength of glubam boards, was suggested for design purposes at the end of this research.
Thickness Variation Effect on Compressive Properties of Ultra-Thick CFRP Laminates

Abstract:As ultra-thick laminates are widely used in the field of aerospace and marine as the main load-bearing structure, extreme service conditions lead to increasing thickness of composite structures. However, the effect of the increase in thickness on the compressive properties of ultra-thick laminates is still unclear. Herein parameters including fiber volume fraction, fiber waviness, void content and free edge effect that affect the compressive strength with increasing thickness are studied. The results show that the fiber volume fraction of ultra-thick laminates does not change significantly with the increase of thickness due to the adoption of the zerobleeding process, while the fiber waviness and void contribute to the thickness effect on compressive strength. On the other hand, the high interlaminar stress of the free edge contributes to the premature delamination of the specimen, which dominates the compressive strength of the ultra-thick laminate. Finally, compared with the thin laminate (2 mm), the compressive strength of ultra-thick laminate drops sharply (nearly 28%), but when the thickness increases from 30 to 70 mm, the drop of compressive strength is not obvious (only 10%). When the material and curing process are consistent, the weak interlaminar properties of ultra-thick laminates does not change significantly with the increase of thickness, which leads to the insignificant decrease in compression strength of ultra-thick laminates with the increase of thickness. The proposed empirical relationship between the compressive strength and thickness of quasi-isotropic laminates can provide important theoretical basis and experimental reference for the design of ultra-thick composite structures.

Abstract:In order to promote the application of bamboo materials in construction industry,this paper reports lateral loading test results of lightweight woodframe shear walls with ply-bamboo sheathing panels.ASTM E2126-09 was selected as the experimental guideline for the monotonic and cyclic tests of eight shear walls.Two types of shear walls were made using two different nails,51 mm long nail-gun driven nails and 51 mm long nail staples.The bearing capacity is 5.2 kN / m and 6.2 kN / m respectively.Shear walls keep its integrity and most of its bearing capacity when the lateral displacement is below 100 mm.Test results show that the application of ply-bamboo sheathing panel can satisfy the bearing capacity requirements of shear walls designed as structural elements,according to current codes for timber structures.

Abstract:This study focused on the mechanical performance of toothed metal-plate connected (MPC) laminated bamboo lumber (LBL) joints aiming to apply this metal-plate connection to the design and manufacturing of engineered bamboo trusses, due to the merits of the cost-effective and easy installation. A total of 212 MPC LBL and SPF (spruce-pine-fir) joints connected by the domestic toothed metal plates were tested in accordance with Chinese standards. Particular emphasis was placed on the load-slip behavior of metal plate teeth embedded in LBL with varied load direction related to the major axis of the toothed metal plate. Design values of the tensile and shear strength of the net section cross metal plate connector, and the anchorage and anti-slip strengths of the metal plate teeth embedded in LBL were presented in accordance with the existing timber design specification. Test results reveal that the metal plate orientation has a significant effect on the mechanical performance of MPC LBL joints. A new angular equation, expressed as the metal plate orientation, was proposed for evaluating the anchorage and anti-slip strengths of MPC LBL joints, which shows an obvious reduction in predicting error compared with the existing method. Design strength values of LBL joints are higher than those of the corresponding SPF joints, mainly due to the relatively smaller dispersion of LBL compared with SPF, indicating that the MPC LBL is expected to replace MPC timber in truss systems. The results of the comparison of MPC LBL and glubam (glued laminated bamboo) joints also suggest that arranging transverse bamboo strips is an available option for improving the anchoring mechanical performance of MPC LBL joints.

Abstract:Prefabricated light-frame bamboo trusses are widely used in light-frame construction as the main vertical load-carrying elements in roof and floor systems because of their long-span capabilities, ease of use, versatile configuration, rapid installation, and competitive cost. This paper presents experimental studies on glue-laminated bamboo trusses. Six full-scale model trusses with two types of configuration and sizes were tested to failure under gradually increased vertical load. The failure of the model trusses was caused by lateral buckling of the top chords. Tests show that the modern glue-laminated bamboo trusses have adequate stiffness and strength.

Abstract:To investigate the mechanical performance of short laminated bamboo column (LBC) with different cross-section morphology and vascular bundle content, three groups of specimens were axially compressed to investigate their elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, load capacity and failure mode. The cross-section morphology of bamboo column has little influence on the ultimate bearing capacity of bamboo column, but it has a certain effect on the ductility. The vascular bundle content of LBC has great influence on the mechanical properties, as the mean peak load of group C is 25.16% higher than that of group B1. It is also found that the strength of the LBC depends on the global fiber buckling while the delamination of the fibers results in the complete failure of the LBC.

Abstract:Mechanical properties of laminated bamboo lumber (LBL) units with and without nodes were experimentally studied under various loading conditions such as compression along parallel and perpendicular to the grain as well as tension and shear along parallel to the grain direction. Small specimens were carefully manufactured from Moso bamboo investigate to the effect of nodes on key mechanical properties including strength, ductility, elastic modulus and failure modes under considered loading cases. Results showed that nodes clearly have some beneficial effect on compression resistance of LBL units, albeit the effect is dependent on grain direction. On the other hand, the presence of nodes showed an adverse effect on the tensile resistance but did not have any meaningful effect on shear resistance. Elastic modulus under different loading conditions was also affected due to the presence of nodes. The behavior of LBL units under compression and shear were nonlinear and showed good agreement with Ramberg-Osgood type analytical models when calibrated using obtained results. In addition, the microstructure of LBL units was scanned using an electron microscope and it was obvious that those units are a two-phase composite material like natural bamboo.

Abstract:An important principle in rational manufacturing design is matching the properties of composites to their intended uses. Herein, six laminated composites (LCs) were manufactured using fibrous moso bamboo and poplar veneer units, and their pore structure, water resistance, and mechanical properties were evaluated. The LC density (640–1290 kg/m3) increased significantly with increasing bamboo veneer unit content. The LC surface texture and roughness depended on the density and type of surface layer. With increasing LC density, the water absorption rate (WAR), width swelling rate (WSR), and thickness swelling rate (TSR) decreased exponentially and the mechanical properties increased linearly. This behavior was closely related to the changes in pore structure caused by density. Notably, the water resistance and mechanical properties of the LCs with densities higher than 910 kg/m3 were superior to the highest levels specified in GB/T 20241–2006 for ''laminated veneer lumber'' and GB/T 30364–2013 for "bamboo scrimber flooring". Thus, these engineered materials are promising for outdoor structures and flooring.

Abstract:In this study, the tensile mechanical properties of bolted laminated bamboo lumber (LBL) loaded parallel to the grain were investigated under the influence of end distance and bolt spacing according to ASTM D5652-95. A total of 32 specimens were tested and the bearing capacity was calculated based on the 5% D offset method. The test results showed that: end distance and bolt spacing both regularly affected the initial stiffness and bearing capacity of the specimens, while there was no significant effect on the yield stiffness; with the enlargement of end distance and bolt spacing, the ductility ratio gradually increased and tended to stabilize, and the failure mode shifted from brittle failure to ductile failure, resulting in the recommended minimum size requirements for bolted LBL as follows: 8 times the bolt diameter for the end distance and 7 times the bolt diameter for the bolt spacing. The bolted connection bearing capacity of different materials as well as that obtained by different calculation methods were compared with the experimental results, allowing the empirical equations for predicting the yield load of bolted LBL to be put forward.

Abstract:To improve the utilization rate of raw bamboo and reduce the amount of adhesive, this paper studied a new type of laminated bamboo lumber, that is, laminated flattened bamboo lumber. The monotonic pull-out tests were carried out on 56 specimens with glued-in steel rods of three different diameters (12 mm, 16 mm, and 20 mm, respectively; the thickness of the adhesive layer was 3 mm) of laminated flattened bamboo lumber, and the effect of anchorage length and diameter of the steel bar on the mechanical properties of bond anchorage were studied. In addition, the specimens with a diameter of 12 mm and an anchorage length of 100 mm were selected to study the effect of different thicknesses of the adhesive layer (between 2 mm and 4 mm) on the mechanical properties of bonded anchorage. The results showed that the failure modes could be divided into three types. For the specimens with the same anchorage length, the larger the diameter of the glued-in steel bar was, the larger the ultimate pullout load would be; when the diameter of the steel bar was the same, the ultimate pullout load of the specimens increased with the increase of the anchorage length. When the diameter of the glued-in steel bar was 12 mm, the average bond strength decreased with the increase in slenderness ratio. When the diameter of the glued-in steel bar was 16 mm and 20 mm, the average bond strength first increased and then decreased with the increase of the slenderness ratio, and the turning slenderness ratio points were 8.75 and 5, respectively. The ANOVA analysis with parameters revealed that the rebar's diameter and length significantly impacted the bond-anchorage characteristics of the glued-in rod connection in laminated flattened bamboo lumber.

Abstract:The dowel-bearing properties of a newly laminated flattened-bamboo (LFB) composite for engineering use was studied in this research by using the 5% bolt diameter offset method. The effects of specimen dimensions, bolt diameter, density, and bolt placed direction were included. Computed tomography (CT) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to identify the failure type. The test results indicate that the parallel-to-grain dowel-bearing strength of LFB generally increased with an increasing density. When the bolt was placed along the LFB's radial direction, the parallel-to-grain dowel-bearing strength approximately remained a constant (52 MPa) with the change of specimen dimensions and bolt diameter, while when the bolt was along the tangential direction, the dowel-bearing strength increased with the raising ratio of specimen thickness and bolt diameter. The first failure type was a crushing failure of bamboo fiber underneath the bolt, it happened when bolt diameter was small (12 mm and 14 mm) and placed along LFB's radial direction. The second type was a splitting failure due to the lateral force generated by the bolt embedded into specimen, bamboo fiber splitting failure dominated for specimens with bolt along radial direction, while when bolt along tangential direction, glue layer splitting happened. The measured dowel-bearing strength was compared to the predictions obtained from equations in current wood specifications and articles. The results indicated that, except for the predicted values from the NDS equation (max error = 36%), which showed relatively reasonable agreement with the test values, the remaining predicted values exhibited discrepancies with the test values. To obtain proper predicted values, equations include density and ratio of specimen thickness and bolt diameter were proposed for calculation of LFB's parallel-to-grain dowel-bearing strength.

Abstract:Based on the current national test standard of wood structures (China), tensile specimens with different section thickness and effective length were designed to investigate the size design on the tensile property of the parallel bamboo strand lumber (PBSL). At the same time, compression components with different length were designed to study the effect of slenderness ratio on the compression performance of the PBSL. Four nonlinear constitutive models were applied to model the compressive stress-strain curves. The results show that the tensile property of the PBSL is tightly related to the section thickness. It is recommended that section thickness of 10 mm and effective length of 60 mm might be the most appropriate specimen size for the tensile experiment. The compressive strength increases with reducing the slenderness ratio. Among the four nonlinear constitutive models, the Ramberg-Osgood relationship could most consistently fit the compres-sion stress-strain relationship of the PBSL.

Abstract:Bamboo is a fast-growing biobased building material with a high strength-to-weight ratio, and the combination of bamboo and wood provides an environmentally friendly alternative for building construction. A new type of laminated bamboo–timber composite column was proposed to improve the compressive performance of timber columns, which was expected to obtain better mechanical performance. Bamboo scrimber and Douglas fir were combined to form laminated bamboo–timber composite columns for the experimental study. Axial compression tests were carried out on 5 groups of 15 composite columns. The failure modes of the composite columns were assessed. The laws of axial displacement, lateral displacement, axial strain, ultimate bearing capacity and stiffness were analyzed. Finally, the bearing capacity of the composite columns was calculated by referring to the design specification for timber structures. The results indicated that the composite columns exhibited three failure characteristics. The ultimate bearing capacity and stiffness of the bamboo–timber composite columns increased with increasing amount of bamboo scrimber. The ultimate load of the bamboo–timber composite columns was increased by 23.0–94.6%, while the stiffness was increased by 9.1–38.4%. In addition, the bearing capacity of composite columns was calculated according to two standards. The experimental values of the bamboo–timber composite columns are in good agreement with the theoretical values, and the errors are within 8%.

Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics

Abstract:To study the fracture characteristics of laminated flattened-bamboo lumber (LFBL), a transverse mode I fracture test was carried out on a single-edge notched (SEN) specimen. The failure of the specimen was analyzed at the macroscopic and microscopic levels. According to the analysis of P-CMOD curves, it was found that the entire fracture process could be divided into a linear stage, a softening stage and a failure stage, showing nonlinear elastic characteristics. Therefore, the fracture toughness K IC and tensile strength f t of the specimens were calculated by the boundary effect model (BEM) based on the nonlinear elastic fracture mechanism (non-LEFM). According to the calculation results, the influence of size change on fracture toughness K IC was analyzed. On this basis, this paper recommended the specimen size conditions for testing the mode I fracture toughness K IC of SEN specimens of LFBL in LT plane, i.e., S/W ≥ 4 and B ≥ 25 mm, thereby reducing the data dispersion caused by the change of specimen size. Finally, the mode I fracture toughness was obtained: K IC = 429.490 MPa·mm1/2.
