Abstract:The thermoelectric performance of materials is dependent on the interplay or competition among three key components, the electrical conductivity, thermopower, and thermal conductivity, which can be written as integrals of a single function, the transport distribution function (TDF). Mahan and Sofo [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 93, 7436 (1996)] found that, mathematically, the thermoelectric properties could be maximized by a delta-shaped transport distribution, which was associated with a narrow distribution of the energy of the electrons participating in the transport process. In this work, we revisited the shape effect of TDF on thermoelectric figure of merit. It is confirmed both heuristically and numerically that among all the normalized TDF the Dirac delta function leads to the largest thermoelectric figure of merit. Whereas, for the case of TDF being bounded, a rectangular-shape distribution is instead found to be the most favorable one, which could be achieved through nanoroute. Our results also indicate that high thermoelectric figure of merit is associated with appropriate violations of the Wiedemann Franz law. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. Abstract:The bottleneck in modern thermoelectric power generation and cooling is the low energy conversion efficiency of thermoelectric materials. The detrimental effects of lattice phonons on performance can be mitigated, but achieving a high thermoelectric power factor remains a major problem because the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity cannot be jointly increased. The conducting electron gas in thermoelectric materials is the actual working fluid that performs the energy conversion, so its properties determine the maximum efficiency that can theoretically be achieved. By relating the thermoelastic properties of the electronic working fluid to its transport properties (considering noninteracting electron systems), we show why the performance of conventional semiconductor materials is doomed to remain low. Analyzing the temperature dependence of the power factor theoretically in 2D systems and experimentally in a thin film, we find that in the fluctuation regimes of an electronic phase transition, the thermoelectric power factor can significantly increase owing to the increased compressibility of the electron gas. We also calculate the ideal thermoelectric conversion efficiency in noninteracting electron systems across a wide temperature range neglecting phonon effects and dissipative coupling to the heat source and sink. Our results show that driving the electronic system to the vicinity of a phase transition can indeed be an innovative route to strong efficiency enhancement, but at the cost of an extremely narrow temperature range for the use of such materials, which in turn precludes potential development for the desired wide range of thermoelectric energy conversion applications.

Abstract:High‐performance thermoelectric materials have attracted immense interest due to the capability of directly converting thermal energy into electrical energy. The correlation and inherent complexity between the thermoelectric parameters pose serious challenges to improving the materials’ thermoelectric performance. Herein, the emerging novel theories in the field of thermoelectrics are summarized, such as the coherent phonon, nanophononic metamaterial, rattling effect, topological phonon, and topological electron. The impacts of these new concepts on thermoelectric performance are then reviewed. Finally, a number of promising thermoelectric materials such as one‐dimensional nanowires, two‐dimensional layered materials, and nanomesh structures are discussed. The advanced understanding of thermal and electrical transport properties in thermoelectric materials is presented herein, providing new opportunities for improving thermoelectric performance.

Abstract:Thermoelectric materials can be potentially employed in solid-state devices that harvest waste heat and convert it to electrical power, thereby improving the efficiency of fuel utilization. The spectacular increases in the efficiencies of these materials achieved over the past decade have raised expectations regarding the use of thermoelectric generators in various energy saving and energy management applications, especially at mid to high temperature (400–900 °C). However, several important issues that prevent successful thermoelectric generator commercialization remain unresolved, in good part because of the lack of a research roadmap.

Abstract:Thermoelectric (TE) materials are prominent candidates for energy converting applications due to their excellent performance and reliability. Extensive efforts for improving their efficiency in single-/multi-phase composites comprising nano/micro-scale second phases are being made. The artificial decoration of second phases into the thermoelectric matrix in multi-phase composites, which is distinguished from the second-phase precipitation occurring during the thermally equilibrated synthesis of TE materials, can effectively enhance their performance. Theoretically, the interfacial manipulation of phase boundaries can be extended to a wide range of materials. High interface densities decrease thermal conductivity when nano/micro-scale grain boundaries are obtained and certain electronic structure modifications may increase the power factor of TE materials. Based on the distribution of second phases on the interface boundaries, the strategies can be divided into discontinuous and continuous interfacial modifications. The discontinuous interfacial modifications section in this review discusses five parts chosen according to their dispersion forms, including metals, oxides, semiconductors, carbonic compounds, and MXenes. Alternatively, gas- and solution-phase process techniques are adopted for realizing continuous surface changes, like the core–shell structure. This review offers a detailed analysis of the current state-of-the-art in the field, while identifying possibilities and obstacles for improving the performance of TE materials.

Abstract:By converting waste heat into electricity through the thermoelectric power of solids without producing greenhouse gas emissions, thermoelectric generators could be an important part of the solution to today's energy challenge. There has been a resurgence in the search for new materials for advanced thermoelectric energy conversion applications. In this paper, we will review recent efforts on improving thermoelectric efficiency. Particularly, several novel proof-of-principle approaches such as phonon disorder in phonon-glasselectron crystals, low dimensionality in nanostructured materials and charge-spin-orbital degeneracy in strongly correlated systems on thermoelectric performance will be discussed.

Abstract:Thermoelectricity, green technology which can convert huge free thermal energy to electricity without time and geography limitations, is vital for bright future energy to alleviate global warming. In recent decades, numerous efforts have been made in the development of thermoelectric (TE) materials and their devices for various applications. Here, the latest progress of TE materials and devices is summarized. Multiple strategies for improving the performance of TE materials via regulating carriers and phonons are discussed. Besides the common heat source from industrial, natural, radioisotope, human and solar energy harvesting in various approaches, the attractive radiative cooling technology can provide a cold source for TE devices to generate electricity. Furthermore, TE devices are utilized to develop self-powered temperature/optical/chemical/biological sensors as well as temperature controllers and desalination. Especially, it is proposed that thermoelectric devices can be used to detect chemical endothermic reactions and the heat released by cell activity. In addition, it is expected that an uninterrupted power generation could be realized by integrating radiative cooling emitters and photothermal materials with thermoelectric devices. The future tendency is to further enhance material performance, optimize device design and develop adaptive circuit units while looking for exclusive broad application scenarios. There is plenty of room for thermoelectricity.
Thermal-inert and ohmic-contact interface for high performance half-Heusler based thermoelectric generator

Abstract:Unsatisfied electrode bonding in half-Heusler devices renders thermal damage and large efficiency loss, which limits their practical service at high temperatures. Here, we develop a thermodynamic strategy to screen barrier layer elements. Theoretically, we found that the interface between VIIB elements and half-Heuslers possesses near-zero interfacial reaction energy and large atomic diffusion barrier. Experimentally, such an interphase proves to be the atomic direct bonding and has high thermal stability at 1073 K, leading to ideal ohmic contact. Such thermally inert and ohmic contact interface enable modules stably to work at elevated temperature up to 1100 K, which releases the peak performance of half-Heuslers and in turn boosts the energy conversion efficiencies to the records of 11.1% and 13.3% for half-Heusler single-stage and half-Heusler/Bi 2 Te 3 segmented modules. This design strategy provides a feasible solution for the high-temperature half-Heusler generators and gives enlightenment for other package interconnection design of electronic devices.

Abstract:<p>How to produce electricity safely and without pollution is an important issue to our world. The solar thermoelectric generator can realize direct solarelectric energy conversion. However, the output power of the traditional solar thermoelectric generator is instability because of the instantaneity of the solar energy. In this paper, the paraffin/expanded graphite phase change materials were used in the solar thermoelectric generator to realize the thermal management of the solar energy. Expanded graphite improves the thermal conductivity and the anti-leakage ability of the paraffin; therefore, the prepared phase change materials have higher thermal response speed and wider application than the pure paraffin. As a result, when the temperatures of the phase change materials with different melting points (50 °C, 60 °C, 70 °C, and 80 °C) enter their own phase transition regions, the open circuit voltages of the corresponding systems also enter the stable output platforms. This verifies the excellent thermal management performance of the phase change materials on solar thermoelectric generator. In addition, the output voltage is considerable and the maximum value is 2.697 V for 80 °C PCMs. When the solar irradiation disappears, the latent heat of paraffin can still keep the system operating. Meanwhile, a mathematical model with high accuracy was also proposed.</p>

Abstract:Thermoelectric materials, which can convert waste heat into electricity or act as solid-state Peltier coolers, are emerging as key technologies to address global energy shortages and environmental sustainability. However, discovering materials with high thermoelectric conversion efficiency is a complex and slow process. The emerging field of high-throughput material discovery demonstrates its potential to accelerate the development of new thermoelectric materials combining high efficiency and low cost. The synergistic integration of high-throughput material processing and characterization techniques with machine learning algorithms can form an efficient closed-loop process to generate and analyze broad data sets to discover new thermoelectric materials with unprecedented performances. Meanwhile, the recent development of advanced manufacturing methods provides exciting opportunities to realize scalable, low-cost, and energy-efficient fabrication of thermoelectric devices. This review provides an overview of recent advances in discovering thermoelectric materials using high-throughput methods, including processing, characterization, and screening. Advanced manufacturing methods of thermoelectric devices are also introduced to realize the broad impacts of thermoelectric materials in power generation and solid-state cooling. In the end, this paper also discusses the future research prospects and directions.

Optimization Design and Performance Study of Wearable Thermoelectric Device Using Phase Change Material as Heat Sink

Abstract:Wearable thermoelectric generators have great potential to provide power for smart electronic wearable devices and miniature sensors by harnessing the temperature difference between the human body and the environment. However, the Thomson effect, the Joule effect, and heat conduction can cause a decrease in the temperature difference across the thermoelectric generator during operation. In this paper, phase change materials (PCMs) were employed as the heat sink for the thermoelectric generator, and the COMSOL software 6.1 was utilized to simulate and optimize the power generation processes within the heat sink. The results indicated that with a PCM height of 40 mm, phase transition temperature of 293 K, latent heat of 200 kJ/kg, phase transition temperature interval of 5 K, thermal conductivity of 50 W/(m·K), isobaric heat capacity of 2000 J/(Kg·K), density of 1000 kg/m3, and convective heat transfer coefficient of 10 W/(m·K), the device can maintain a temperature difference of 18-10 K for 1930 s when the thermoelectric leg height is 1.6 mm, and 3760 s when the thermoelectric leg height is 2.7 mm. These results demonstrate the correlation between the device's output performance and the dimensions and performance parameters of the PCM heat sink, thereby validating the feasibility of employing the PCM heat sink and the necessity for systematic investigations.

Abstract:Thermoelectrics interconvert heat to electricity and are of great interest in waste heat recovery, solid-state cooling and so on. The efficiency of thermoelectric materials depends directly on the average ZT (dimensionless figure of merit) over a certain temperature range, which historically has been challenging to increase. Here we report that 2.5% K-doped PbTe 0.7 S 0.3 achieves a ZT of >2 for a very wide temperature range from 673 to 923 K and has a record high average ZT of 1.56 (corresponding to a theoretical energy conversion efficiency of ~20.7% at the temperature gradient from 300 to 900 K). The PbTe 0.7 S 0.3 composition shows spinodal decomposition with large PbTe-rich and PbS-rich regions where each region exhibits dissimilar types of nanostructures. Such high average ZT is obtained by synergistically optimized electrical- and thermal-transport properties via carrier concentration tuning, band structure engineering and hierarchical architecturing, and highlights a realistic prospect of wide applications of thermoelectrics.

Abstract:The thermoelectric effect can convert waste heat into electricity. The present work presents an integrated system of Thermoelectric Generators (TEG) and Phase Change Materials (PCMs) for thermal insulation of high-speed vehicles, where high heat fluxes of large fluctuations make thermal protection and energy harvest challenging. A single-stage thermoelectric generator is prepared with phase-change materials embedded to absorb and convert excessive heat. The performance is evaluated experimentally and numerically, between which a reasonable agreement is observed. The maximum temperature at the outside surface is reduced by 200 K, and the temperature curves are flattered. Furthermore, two-stage and two-segment integrated systems are numerically evaluated, generating a data set of thermoelectric performance. An artificial neural network is developed for prediction and a genetic algorithm is employed for optimization. The maximum specific power can be improved to 570 W/m 2 in the two-segment system, while the temperature variation at the hot side of TEG in the two-stage system can be reduced to 230 K. Finally, a discussion on the effects of PCMs parameters is performed. Overall, the present work not only demonstrates the feasibility of such an integrated system but also illustrates the whole procedure of the predictions and optimizations. This could inspire more development for advanced integrated systems for thermal management.
