Abstract:We study symmetric and asymmetric optical multi-peak solitons on a continuous wave background in the femtosecond regime of a single-mode fiber. Key characteristics of such multi-peak solitons, as the formation mechanism, propagation stability, and shape-changing collisions, are revealed in detail. Our results show that this multi-peak (symmetric or asymmetric) mode could be regarded as a single pulse formed by a nonlinear superposition of a periodic wave and a single-peak (W-shaped or antidark) soliton. In particular, a phase diagram for different types of nonlinear excitations on a continuous wave background including breather, rogue wave, W-shaped soliton, antidark soliton, periodic wave, and multi-peak soliton is established based on the explicit link between exact nonlinear wave solution and modulation instability analysis. Numerical simulations are performed to confirm the propagation stability of the multi-peak solitons with symmetric and asymmetric structures. Further, we unveil a remarkable shape-changing feature of asymmetric multi-peak solitons. It is interesting that these shape-changing interactions occur not only in the intraspecific collision (soliton mutual collision) but also in the interspecific interaction (soliton-breather interaction). Our results demonstrate that each multi-peak soliton exhibits the coexistence of shape change and conservation of the localized energy of light pulse against the continuous wave background.

Abstract:The discovery of a new type of solitons occuring in periodic systems without photonic bandgaps is reported. Solitons are nonlinear self-trapped wave packets. They have been extensively studied in many branches of physics. Solitons in periodic systems, which have become the mainstream of soliton research in the past decade, are localized states supported by photonic bandgaps. In this Letter, we report the discovery of a new type of solitons located at the Dirac point beyond photonic bandgaps. The Dirac point is a conical singularity of a photonic band structure where wave motion obeys the famous Dirac equation. These new solitons are sustained by the Dirac point rather than photonic bandgaps, thus provides a sort of advance in conceptual understanding over the traditional gap solitons. Apart from their theoretical impact within soliton theory, they have many potential uses because such solitons have dramatic stability characteristics and are possible in both Kerr material and photorefractive crystals that possess self-focusing and self-defocusing nonlinearities. The new results elegantly reveal that traditional photonic bandgaps are not required when Dirac points are accessible. The findings enrich the soliton family and provide valuable information for studies of nonlinear waves in many branches of physics, including hydrodynamics, plasma physics, and Bose Einstein condensates.
Bilinear forms and soliton solutions for a (2 + 1)-dimensional variable-coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation in an optical fiber

Abstract:In this paper, under investigation is a (2 + 1)-dimensional variable-coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which is introduced to the study of an optical fiber, where [Formula: see text] is the temporal variable, variable coefficients [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are related to the group velocity dispersion, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] represent the Kerr nonlinearity and linear term, respectively. Via the Hirota bilinear method, bilinear forms are obtained, and bright one-, two-, three- and N-soliton solutions as well as dark one- and two-soliton solutions are derived, where [Formula: see text] is a positive integer. Velocities and amplitudes of the bright/dark one solitons are obtained via the characteristic-line equations. With the graphical analysis, we investigate the influence of the variable coefficients on the propagation and interaction of the solitons. It is found that [Formula: see text] can only affect the phase shifts of the solitons, while [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] determine the amplitudes and velocities of the bright/dark solitons.

Abstract:Under the current study is the Fokas system that is used to model the nonlinear pulse propagation in monomode optical fibers. By using the extended rational sine-cosine and sinh-cosh methods, eight families of the soliton solutions like trigonometric soliton, singular soliton, bright soliton and dark soliton are constructed. The performances of the solutions are described through the 3-D contours. The results reveal that the proposed methods are effective to construct abundant soliton solutions for the partial differential equations arising in optics.

Highly-Multimode Solitons in Step-Index Optical Fiber

Abstract:We report the generation of multimode solitons in step-index fiber. The solitons are superpositions of 5-10 temporally-aligned transverse modes, they exhibit speckled beam profiles, and the spatio-spectral variation across the soliton can be complex. Greater understanding of multimode solitons should create a foundation for further research into complex multimode nonlinear phenomena in step-index fibers. With energies of tens of nanojoules and durations around 100 fs, the multimode solitons are speckled fields with peak powers that can exceeed 300 kW, parameters which may be valuable in applications.

Abstract:The (2+1)-dimensional two-component nonlocal solitons of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the partially nonlocal nonlinearity are analytically obtained. Two component optical fields exhibit different types of dynamical behaviors. The dark soliton and bright soliton for two field components describe two co-propagating fields at different frequencies and they are both quickly stabilized to propagate parallel to the z-axis after the initial oscillations. Superposed rogue waves in bright soliton and dark soliton are also constructed for two field components.

Abstract:This study investigates the dynamic characteristics of the dual-mode resonant non-linear Schrodinger equation with a Bhom potential. Hydrodynamics, nonlinear optical fibre communication, elastic media, and plasma physics are just a few of the mathematical physics and engineering applications for this model. The study aims to achieve two main objectives: first, to discuss bifurcation analysis, and second, to extract optical soliton solutions using the extended hyperbolic function method. The study successfully derives various wave solutions, including bright, singular, periodic singular and dark solitons, based on the governing model. The findings conferred in this article show a crucial advancement in understanding the propagation of waves in non-linear media. Additionally, bifurcation of phase portraits of ordinary differential equation consistent with the partial differential equation under consideration is conducted. We also highlight specific constraint conditions that ensure the presence of these obtained solutions. The existing literature shows that these methods are first time applied on this model.

Abstract:Dissipative Kerr solitons are self-sustaining optical wavepackets in resonators. They use the Kerr nonlinearity to both compensate dispersion and offset optical loss. Besides providing insights into nonlinear resonator physics, they can be applied in frequency metrology, precision clocks, and spectroscopy. Like other optical solitons, the dissipative Kerr soliton can radiate power as a dispersive wave through a process that is the optical analogue of Cherenkov radiation. Dispersive waves typically consist of an ensemble of optical modes. Here, a limiting case is studied in which the dispersive wave is concentrated into a single cavity mode. In this limit, its interaction with the soliton induces hysteresis behaviour in the soliton's spectral and temporal properties. Also, an operating point of enhanced repetition-rate stability occurs through balance of dispersive-wave recoil and Raman-induced soliton-self-frequency shift. The single-mode dispersive wave can therefore provide quiet states of soliton comb operation useful in many applications.

Abstract:Investigations on nonlinear optics are active, with the applications in the modulators, fiber lasers, optical sensors, etc. In this paper, we focus our attention on a system for the ultra-short pulses in an inhomogeneous multi-component nonlinear optical medium. Starting from the existing Lax pair and one-fold Darboux transformation (DT), we construct the N -fold DT of that system, which involves N distinct spectral parameters, where N is a positive integer. The N -fold generalized DT with one spectral parameter is obtained through resorting to the Taylor-series-expansion coefficients of a special solution to that Lax pair. Double-pole soliton solutions of that system are derived via that N -fold generalized DT with N=2 . With the aid of the N -fold DT, an N -fold Darboux matrix is constructed, based on which the multi-pole soliton solutions in the determinant form with respect to the electromagnetic field E are determined. Graphically, we find that those double-pole soliton solutions are a kind of the bound-state soliton solutions which represent the elastic interactions between the two solitons. Effects of the coefficients in that system on the double-pole soliton are shown via choosing the trigonometric, linear and quadratic functions. Furthermore, we present the triple-pole soliton and quadruple-pole soliton with respect to E . Our results might be useful in understanding the ultra-short pulses in the nonlinear optical media.

Abstract:In this work, we study an extended (2+1)-dimensional perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger equation (P-NLS) with Kerr law nonlinearity in a nano optical fiber. The extended model includes fourth-order spatial derivatives. We study the influence of the nonlinearity and spatial dispersions effects given in spatial directions x and y . Various types of optical soliton solutions, that describe different structures of optical solutions, such as bright solitons, dark solitons, exponential, rational, and others as well, are extracted. The study is carried out by means of useful soliton ansatzes to retrieve this variety of optical soliton solutions. The obtained findings demonstrate that the implemented techniques are capable of identifying the exact solutions of other nonlinear evolution equations that arise in a range of scientific and engineering fields.

Abstract:The primary objective of this study is to examine the behavior of the nonlinear Kaup-Newell equation. By employing the modified Kudryashov method and extended tanh function method, we have successfully derived novel solitary wave and periodic solutions. These new solutions are presented in trigonometric, hyperbolic and exponential function types. The proposed two approaches are efficient, direct and fascinating. These newly discovered solutions are illustrated using two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphs, incorporating suitable parameters values. These graphs are crucial for elucidating the dynamic properties of optical fibers.

Abstract:Quasinormal modes (QNMs) are essential for understanding the stability and resonances of open systems, with increasing prominence in black hole physics. We present here the first study of QNMs of optical potentials. We show that solitons can support QNMs, deriving a soliton perturbation equation and giving exact analytical expressions for the QNMs of fiber solitons. We discuss the boundary conditions in this intrinsically dispersive system and identify novel signatures of dispersion. From here, we discover a new analogy with black holes and describe a regime in which the soliton is a robust black hole simulator for light-ring phenomena. Our results invite a range of applications, from the description of optical pulse propagation with QNMs to the use of state-of-the-art technology from fiber optics to address questions in black hole physics, such as QNM spectral instabilities and the role of nonlinearities in ringdown. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.053802 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:The (2+1)-dimensional generalized coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the four-wave mixing (FWM) term is studied in this paper, which describes the optical solitons in a birefringent fiber. By virtue of the Hirota method, the one- and two-soliton solutions are derived. On the basis of solutions obtained, we discuss how the values of the FWM and some free parameters affect the solitons’ peformance. The FWM parameter can help to control the amplitude of the solitons. Meanwhile, by setting the values of certain free parameters, we can control the solitons’ propagation direction and speed, and reduce the interactions between them as well. In addition, the energy transfer of solitons during elastic collision and separation is also discussed. The conclusions here may be useful in improving the communication quality in multi-mode fibers.

Abstract:We show a new class of complex solitary wave that exists in a nonlinear optical cavity with appropriate dispersion characteristics. The cavity soliton consists of multiple soliton-like spectro-temporal components that exhibit distinctive colors but coincide in time and share a common phase, formed together via strong inter-soliton four-wave mixing and Cherenkov radiation. The multicolor cavity soliton shows intriguing spectral locking characteristics and remarkable capability of spectrum management to tailor soliton frequencies, which would be very useful for versatile generation and manipulation of multi-octave spanning phase-locked Kerr frequency combs, with great potential for applications in frequency metrology, optical frequency synthesis, and spectroscopy.

Abstract:Under investigation in this paper is a complex modified Korteweg-de Vries equation, which describes the propagation of short pulses in optical fibers. Bilinear forms and multi-soliton solutions are obtained through the Hirota method and symbolic computation. Breather-like and bound-state solitons are constructed in which the signs of the imaginary parts of the complex wave numbers and the initial separations of the two parallel solitons are important factors for the interaction patterns. The periodic structures and position-induced phase shift of some solutions are introduced.

Abstract:Dark solitons feature local dips on a modulationally stable continuous-wave background. Compared with bright solitons, the dark solitons in fiber lasers are more stable in noise circumstances and not much susceptible to loss. Thus, dark solitons have been widely applied in optics communication, optics sensing, and nonlinear optics fields. Although the mechanism of generation of dark solitons in fiber lasers has been numerically studied in the last almost five decades, the experimental observation of dark solitons from a fiber laser system just started since 2009, and it has attracted much attention. This review mainly describes the generation and propagation of nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE) dark soliton in fiber lasers from both experimental and simulation perspectives, and then summarizes a detailed recent progress of the NLSE dark soliton, domain-wall dark soliton, and cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (CQNLSE) dark soliton. At the end of this review, the practical applications and perspectives of dark soliton fiber laser are also provided.

Abstract:Transitional operations of multiple dissipative solitons in a long-cavity normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser are experimentally investigated. Multiple dissipative solitons, including a stable soliton pair and a soliton triplet are observed by increasing the pump power or adjusting the polarization controllers. Two main boundaries of the stable asymmetric soliton and oscillating soliton are found between steady mode-locking. Moreover, multiple dissipative solitons with greater quantities of solitons are observed with pump power increasing. The experimental results agree well with a previous numerical study of multiple dissipative solitons.

Abstract:The multi-soliton solutions and breathers to the coupled higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger (CH-NLS) equation are derived in this work via the Riemann–Hilbert approach. Firstly, the spectral structure of the CH-NLS equation is investigated and then a matrix Riemann–Hilbert problem on the real axis is strictly formulated. Secondly, by solving the special Riemann–Hilbert problem with no reflection where a jump matrix is taken to be the identity matrix, the formula of N-soliton solutions can be computed. Thirdly, we prove that the higher-order linear and nonlinear term r has important impact on the velocity, phase, period and wavewidth of wave dynamics. Besides, the localized waves characteristics together with collision dynamic behaviors of these explicit soliton solutions and breathers are shown graphically and discussed in detail. Interestingly, three solitons display different dynamics which demonstrate amplitudes of the right-direction waves gradually become larger during the propagation process.
