Abstract:Solitons are self-reinforcing localized wave packets arising from a balance of linear and nonlinear effects. This definition encompasses the interplay of nonlinear gain and loss, leading to the concept of dissipative solitons that has been instrumental in understanding the wide variety of mode locking phenomena in ultrafast optics. To date, most studies have involved the group velocity dispersion as a key ingredient for soliton generation. Here, we report on a novel kind of soliton, both theoretically and experimentally, which builds up in spectrally confined cavities when dispersion is practically absent. Precisely, the interplay between the Kerr nonlinearity and spectral filtering results in an infinite hierarchy of eigenfunctions which, combined with optical gain, allow for the generation of stable dispersion-less dissipative solitons in a previously uncharted regime. When the filter order tends to be infinite, we find an unexpected link between dissipative and conservative solitons, in the form of Nyquist-pulse-like solitons endowed with an ultra-flat spectrum. In contrast to the dispersion-enabled solitons, these dispersion-less Nyquist solitons build on a fully confined spectrum and their energy scaling is not constrained by the pulse duration. This study broadens the fundamental scope of dissipative soliton physics and opens new avenues for engineering optical solitons endowed with superior temporal and spectral features.

Abstract:Dissipative Kerr cavity solitons (DKSs) are localized particle-like wave packets that have attracted people’s great interests in the past decades. Besides being an excellent candidate for studying nonlinear physics, DKSs can also enable the generation of broadband frequency combs which have revolutionized a wide range of applications. The formation of DKSs are generally explained by a double balance mechanism. The group velocity dispersion is balanced by the Kerr effect; and the cavity loss is compensated by the parametric gain. Here, we show that DKSs can emerge through the interplay between dispersive loss and Kerr gain, without the participation of group velocity dispersion. By incorporating rectangular gate spectral filtering in a zero-dispersion coherently driven Kerr cavity, we demonstrate the generation of Nyquistpulse-like solitons with unprecedented ultra-flat spectra in the frequency domain. The discovery of pure dissipation enabled solitons reveals new insights into the cavity soliton dynamics, and provides a useful tool for spectral tailoring of Kerr frequency combs.

Abstract:We show a new class of complex solitary wave that exists in a nonlinear optical cavity with appropriate dispersion characteristics. The cavity soliton consists of multiple soliton-like spectro-temporal components that exhibit distinctive colors but coincide in time and share a common phase, formed together via strong inter-soliton four-wave mixing and Cherenkov radiation. The multicolor cavity soliton shows intriguing spectral locking characteristics and remarkable capability of spectrum management to tailor soliton frequencies, which would be very useful for versatile generation and manipulation of multi-octave spanning phase-locked Kerr frequency combs, with great potential for applications in frequency metrology, optical frequency synthesis, and spectroscopy.
Parametrically-driven temporal cavity solitons in a bichromatically-driven pure Kerr resonator

Abstract:Temporal cavity solitons (CSs) are pulses of light that can persist endlessly in dispersive, nonlinear optical resonators. They have been extensively studied in the context of resonators with purely cubic (Kerr-type) nonlinearity that are externally-driven with a monochromatic continuous wave laser -- in such systems, the solitons manifest themselves as unique attractors whose carrier frequency coincides with that of the external driving field. Recent experiments have, however, shown that a qualitatively different type of temporal CS can arise via parametric down-conversion in resonators with simultaneous quadratic and cubic nonlinearity. In contrast to conventional CSs in pure-Kerr resonators, these \emph{parametrically-driven cavity solitons} come in two different flavours with opposite phases, and they are spectrally centred at half of the frequency of the driving field. Here, we theoretically and numerically show that, under conditions of bichromatic driving, such parametrically-driven CSs can also arise in dispersive resonators with pure Kerr nonlinearity. In this case, the solitons arise through parametric four-wave mixing, come with two distinct phases, and have a carrier frequency in between the two external driving fields. We show that, when all waves are resonant, the solitons can experience long-range interactions due to their back-action on the intracavity fields at the pump frequencies, and we discuss the parameter requirements for the solitons' existence. Besides underlining the possibility of exciting a new type of cavity soliton in dispersive Kerr cavities, our work advances the theoretical modeling of resonators that are coherently-driven with polychromatic fields.

Abstract:Optical solitons are wavepackets that can sustain the shape via a nonlinear refractive index potential well. They exist in a wide range of optical systems spanning optical fibers, fiber lasers and parametric oscillators. Recently, a new type optical solitons have been observed in coherently pumped high-Q microcavities. The observation of microcavity optical solitons provides a well-controlled experimental platform to study soliton physics. Microcavity optical solitons also endow an array of highly stable spectral lines in the frequency domain, which advance the miniaturization of frequency comb systems. These soliton microcombs have been self-reference stabilized and could enable many chip-based applications including optical frequency synthesizers, optical atomic clocks, data transmission, spectrometer and LiDAR in the near future. Here, the fundamental of microcavity optical solitons was introduced, with a special focus on soliton interaction dynamics. The microcavity dual-comb measurement based applications in fast imaging and mid-infrared gas spectroscopy were also discussed.

Abstract:Quasinormal modes (QNMs) are essential for understanding the stability and resonances of open systems, with increasing prominence in black hole physics. We present here the first study of QNMs of optical potentials. We show that solitons can support QNMs, deriving a soliton perturbation equation and giving exact analytical expressions for the QNMs of fiber solitons. We discuss the boundary conditions in this intrinsically dispersive system and identify novel signatures of dispersion. From here, we discover a new analogy with black holes and describe a regime in which the soliton is a robust black hole simulator for light-ring phenomena. Our results invite a range of applications, from the description of optical pulse propagation with QNMs to the use of state-of-the-art technology from fiber optics to address questions in black hole physics, such as QNM spectral instabilities and the role of nonlinearities in ringdown.

Abstract:Chip-scale optical frequency combs have attracted significant research interest and can be used in applications ranging from precision spectroscopy to telecom channel generators and lidar systems. In the time domain, microresonator based frequency combs correspond to self-stabilized soliton pulses. In two distinct regimes, microresonators have shown to emit either bright solitons in the anomalous dispersion regime or dark solitons (a short time of darkness in a bright background signal) in the normal dispersion regime. Here, we investigate the dynamics of continuous-wave-laser-driven soliton generation in the zero-group-velocity-dispersion (GVD) regime, as well as the generation of solitons that are spectrally crossing different dispersion regimes. In the measurements, zero-dispersion solitons with multi-peak structures (soliton molecules) are observed with distinct and predictable spectral envelopes that are a result of fifth-order dispersion of the resonators. Numerical simulations and the analysis of bifurcation structures agree well with the observed soliton states. This is the first observation of soliton generation that is governed by fifth-order dispersion, which can have applications in ultrafast optics, telecom systems and optical spectroscopy.

Abstract:Wideband dissipative soliton is generated in a passively mode-locked cavity by optimizing the distribution of chromatic dispersion and gain filtering in cavity. The maximal 3 dB bandwidth of 61.1 nm is obtained. The corresponding pulse width is compressed to 222 fs with chirp, which could be further compressed to 42 fs according to the Fourier transform limitation. The signal-to-noise ratio is 80.3 dB. The single pulse energy is 0.18 nJ. The dynamics process is investigated by dispersive Fourier transformation during the building-up. The simulation investigation on dissipative soliton formation is provided according to the modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which are relatively consistent with the experiment. The results demonstrate that a weak normal net dispersion close to zero and efficient gain bandwidth are critical to the formation of wideband dissipative soliton.

Abstract:We theoretically investigated the vector properties of quartic solitons in a pure fourth-order-dispersion birefringent fiber and a quartic-dispersion-dominant mode-locked fiber laser. We found that, compared with scalar pure quartic solitons, a vector quartic soliton (VQS) in the birefringent fiber still preserves the Gaussian shape, except for the distinctions of reduced peak power, central frequency offset, slight frequency chirp, and mitigated oscillatory tails. We also demonstrated that pulse shaping in the mode-locked laser cavity could explicitly facilitate the formation of Kelly sidebands and distortion of oscillatory tails. Furthermore, dynamical evolutions of quartic group-velocity-locked and polarization-rotating vector solitons were obtained to enrich the nonlinear community of VQSs. We believe that our elaborate findings will bring insights into both the fundamental understanding and potential applications of VQSs.

Counter-propagating Solitons in Microresonators

Abstract:Counter-propagating solitons are generated in microresonator systems, producing dual-soliton frequency-comb streams with different repetition rates but high relative coherence useful for spectroscopy and laser ranging systems. Solitons occur in many physical systems when a nonlinearity compensates wave dispersion. Their recently demonstrated formation in microresonators has opened a new research direction for nonlinear optical physics1,2,3,4,5. Soliton mode locking also endows frequency microcombs with the enhanced stability necessary for miniaturization of spectroscopy and frequency metrology systems6. These microresonator solitons orbit around a closed waveguide path and produce a repetitive output pulse stream at a rate set by the roundtrip time. Here, counter-propagating solitons that simultaneously orbit in an opposing sense (clockwise/counter-clockwise) are studied. Despite sharing the same spatial mode family, their roundtrip times can be precisely and independently controlled. Furthermore, a state is possible in which both the relative optical phase and relative repetition rates of the distinct soliton streams are locked. This state allows a single resonator to produce dual-soliton frequency-comb streams with different repetition rates, but with a high relative coherence that is useful in both spectroscopy7,8,9 and laser ranging systems10.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs in microresonators (microcombs) have a wide range of applications in science and technology, due to its compact size and access to considerably larger comb spacing. Despite recent successes, the problems of self-starting, high mode efficiency as well as high output power have not been fully addressed for conventional soliton microcombs. Recent demonstration of laser cavity soliton microcombs by nesting a microresonator into a fiber cavity, shows great potential to solve the problems. Here we study the dissipative soliton generation and interaction dynamics in a microresonator-filtered fiber laser in both theory and experiment. We bring theoretical insight into the mode-locking principle, discuss the parameters effect on soliton properties, and provide experimental guidelines for broadband soliton generation. We predict chirped bright dissipative soliton with flat-top spectral envelope in microresonators with normal dispersion, which is fundamentally forbidden for the externally driven case. Furthermore, we experimentally achieve soliton microcombs with large bandwidth of ~10 nm and high mode efficiency of 90.7%. Finally, by taking advantage of an ultrahigh-speed time magnifier, we study the real-time soliton formation and interaction dynamics and experimentally observe soliton Newton's cradle. Our study will benefit the design of the novel, high-efficiency and self-starting microcombs for real-world applications.

Abstract:Solitons are self-sustained wavepackets that occur in many physical systems. Their recent demonstration in optical microresonators has provided a new platform for the study of nonlinear optical physics with practical implications for miniaturization of time standards, spectroscopy tools, and frequency metrology systems. However, despite its importance to the understanding of soliton physics, as well as development of new applications, imaging the rich dynamical behavior of solitons in microcavities has not been possible. These phenomena require a difficult combination of high-temporal-resolution and long-record-length in order to capture the evolving trajectories of closely spaced microcavity solitons. Here, an imaging method is demonstrated that visualizes soliton motion with sub-picosecond resolution over arbitrary time spans. A wide range of complex soliton transient behavior are characterized in the temporal or spectral domain, including soliton formation, collisions, spectral breathing, and soliton decay. This method can serve as a visualization tool for developing new soliton applications and understanding complex soliton physics in microcavities.

Abstract:Solitons, as coherent structures that maintain their shape while traveling at constant velocity, are ubiquitous across various branches of physics, from fluid dynamics to quantum fields. However, it is within the realm of optics where solitons have not only served as a primary testbed for understanding solitary wave phenomena but have also transitioned into applications ranging from telecommunications to metrology. In the optical domain, temporal solitons are localized light pulses, self-reinforcing via a delicate balance between nonlinearity and dispersion. Among the many systems hosting temporal solitons, active optical resonators stand out due to their inherent gain medium, enabling to actively sustain solitons. Unlike conventional modelocked lasers, active resonators offer a richer landscape for soliton dynamics through hybrid driving schemes, such as coupling to passive cavities or under external optical injection, affording them unparalleled control and versatility. We discuss key advantages of these systems, with a particular focus on quantum cascade lasers as a promising soliton technology within the class of active resonators. By exploring diverse architectures from traditional Fabry-Perot cavities to racetrack devices operated under external injection, we present the current state-of-the-art and future directions for soliton-based sources in the realm of semiconductor lasers and hybrid integrated photonic systems.

Abstract:We examine a coherently-driven, dispersion-managed, passive Kerr fiber ring resonator and report, to the best of our knowledge, the first direct experimental observation of dispersive wave emission by temporal cavity solitons (CSs). Our observations are in excellent agreement with analytical predictions and they are fully corroborated by numerical simulations. These results lead to a better understanding of the behavior of temporal CSs under conditions where higher-order dispersion plays a significant role. Significantly, since temporal CSs manifest themselves in monolithic microresonators, our results are likely to explain the origins of spectral features observed in broadband Kerr frequency combs.

Recent experiments have, however, shown that a qualitatively different type of temporal soliton can arise via parametric downconversion in resonators with simultaneous quadratic and cubic nonlinearity. In contrast to conventional solitons in pure-Kerr resonators, these parametrically driven solitons come in two different flavours with opposite phases, and they are spectrally centred at half of the frequency of the driving field. Here we theoretically predict and experimentally demonstrate that parametrically driven solitons can also arise in resonators with pure-Kerr nonlinearity under conditions of bichromatic driving. In this case, the solitons arise through four-wave-mixing-mediated phase-sensitive amplification, come with two distinct phases and have a carrier frequency in between the two external driving fields. Our experiments are performed in an integrated silicon nitride microcavity, and we observe frequency comb spectra in remarkable agreement with theoretical predictions. In addition to representing the discovery of a new type of temporal dissipative soliton, our results constitute an unequivocal realization of parametrically driven soliton frequency combs in a microcavity platform that is compatible with foundry-ready mass fabrication.

Abstract:The (2+1)-dimensional generalized coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the four-wave mixing (FWM) term is studied in this paper, which describes the optical solitons in a birefringent fiber. By virtue of the Hirota method, the one- and two-soliton solutions are derived. On the basis of solutions obtained, we discuss how the values of the FWM and some free parameters affect the solitons’ peformance. The FWM parameter can help to control the amplitude of the solitons. Meanwhile, by setting the values of certain free parameters, we can control the solitons’ propagation direction and speed, and reduce the interactions between them as well. In addition, the energy transfer of solitons during elastic collision and separation is also discussed. The conclusions here may be useful in improving the communication quality in multi-mode fibers.

Abstract:We study symmetric and asymmetric optical multi-peak solitons on a continuous wave background in the femtosecond regime of a single-mode fiber. Key characteristics of such multi-peak solitons, as the formation mechanism, propagation stability, and shape-changing collisions, are revealed in detail. Our results show that this multi-peak (symmetric or asymmetric) mode could be regarded as a single pulse formed by a nonlinear superposition of a periodic wave and a single-peak (W-shaped or antidark) soliton. In particular, a phase diagram for different types of nonlinear excitations on a continuous wave background including breather, rogue wave, W-shaped soliton, antidark soliton, periodic wave, and multi-peak soliton is established based on the explicit link between exact nonlinear wave solution and modulation instability analysis. Numerical simulations are performed to confirm the propagation stability of the multi-peak solitons with symmetric and asymmetric structures. Further, we unveil a remarkable shape-changing feature of asymmetric multi-peak solitons. It is interesting that these shape-changing interactions occur not only in the intraspecific collision (soliton mutual collision) but also in the interspecific interaction (soliton-breather interaction). Our results demonstrate that each multi-peak soliton exhibits the coexistence of shape change and conservation of the localized energy of light pulse against the continuous wave background.

Abstract:Spatial solitons can exist in various kinds of nonlinear optical resonators with and without amplification. In the past years different types of these localized structures such as vortices, bright, dark solitons and phase solitons have been experimentally shown to exist. Many links appear to exist to fields different from optics, such as fluids, phase transitions or particle physics. These spatial resonator solitons are bistable and due to their mobility suggest schemes of information processing not possible with the fixed bistable elements forming the basic ingredient of traditional electronic processing. The recent demonstration of existence and manipulation of spatial solitons in emiconductor microresonators represents a step in the direction of such optical parallel processing applications. We review pattern formation and solitons in a general context, show some proof of principle soliton experiments on slow systems, and describe in more detail the experiments on semiconductor resonator solitons which are aimed at applications.
