Abstract:$N \rightarrow \Delta$ transitions offer new possibilities for exploring the isovector component of the QCD quark angular momentum (AM) operator causing the $J^{u - d}$ flavor asymmetry in the nucleon. We extend the concept of QCD AM to transitions between baryon states, using light-front densities of the energy-momentum tensor in transversely localized states. We calculate the $N \rightarrow \Delta$ transition AM in the $1/N_c$ expansion, connect it with the $J^{u - d}$ flavor asymmetry in the nucleon, and estimate the values using lattice QCD results. In the same setup we connect the transition AM to the transition GPDs sampled in hard exclusive electroproduction processes with $N \rightarrow \Delta$ transitions, enabling experimental study of the transition AM.

Abstract:We report a theoretical study of the axial nucleon-to-delta (1232) ($N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Delta}$) transition form factors up to one-loop order in relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory. We adopt a formalism in which the $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ couplings obey the spin-$3/2$ gauge symmetry and, therefore, decouple the unphysical spin-$1/2$ fields. We compare the results with phenomenological form factors obtained from neutrino bubble-chamber data and in quark models.

Abstract:We present a unified study of nucleon and ${\Delta}$ elastic and transition form factors, and compare predictions made using a framework built upon a Faddeev equation kernel and interaction vertices that possess QCD-like momentum dependence with results obtained using a symmetry-preserving treatment of a vector ${\otimes}$ vector contact-interaction. The comparison emphasises that experiments are sensitive to the momentum dependence of the running couplings and masses in the strong interaction sector of the Standard Model and highlights that the key to describing hadron properties is a veracious expression of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in the bound-state problem. Amongst the results we describe, the following are of particular interest: ${G_{E}^{p}(Q^{2})/G_{M}^{p}(Q^{2})}$ possesses a zero at Q 2 = 9.5 GeV2; any change in the interaction which shifts a zero in the proton ratio to larger Q 2 relocates a zero in ${G_{E}^{n}(Q^{2})/G_M^{n}(Q^{2})}$ to smaller Q 2; there is likely a value of momentum transfer above which ${G_{E}^{n} > G_{E}^{p}}$; and the presence of strong diquark correlations within the nucleon is sufficient to understand empirical extractions of the flavour-separated form factors. Regarding the ${\Delta(1232)}$-baryon, we find that, inter alia: the electric monopole form factor exhibits a zero; the electric quadrupole form factor is negative, large in magnitude, and sensitive to the nature and strength of correlations in the ${\Delta(1232)}$ Faddeev amplitude; and the magnetic octupole form factor is negative so long as rest-frame P- and D-wave correlations are included. In connection with the ${N \to \Delta}$ transition, the momentum-dependence of the magnetic transition form factor, ${G_{M}^{*}}$, matches that of ${G_{M}^{n}}$ once the momentum transfer is high enough to pierce the meson-cloud; and the electric quadrupole ratio is a keen measure of diquark and orbital angular momentum correlations, the zero in which is obscured by meson-cloud effects on the domain currently accessible to experiment. Importantly, within each framework, identical propagators and vertices are sufficient to describe all properties discussed herein. Our analysis and predictions should therefore serve as motivation for measurement of elastic and transition form factors involving the nucleon and its resonances at high photon virtualities using modern electron-beam facilities.
Electromagnetic form factors of the transition from the Delta to the nucleon

Abstract:The low-energy electromagnetic form factors of the $\Delta$(1232)-to-nucleon transition are derived combining dispersion theory techniques and chiral perturbation theory. The form factors are expressed in terms of the well-understood pion vector form factor and pion-baryon scattering amplitudes. Nucleon and Delta exchange terms and contact terms constitute the input for these pion-baryon amplitudes. The framework is formulated for all form factors. When comparing to experimental data in the spacelike region of $e^- N \to e^- \Delta$ scattering, the focus lies on the numerically dominant magnetic dipole transition form factor. Fitting two subtraction constants (one for the scattering amplitude, one for the form factor) yields a very good description of this dominant form factor up to photon virtualities of about 0.6 GeV. After determining the subtraction constants in the spacelike region and at the photon point, respectively, predictions for the timelike region of Dalitz decays $\Delta \to N \, e^+ e^-$ are presented.

Abstract:The ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Delta}(1232)$ transition is a window onto hadron shape deformation, the applicability of perturbative QCD at moderate momentum transfers, and the influence of nonperturbative phenomena on hadronic observables. We explain that the Ash-convention magnetic transition form factor must fall faster than the neutron's magnetic form factor and that nonzero values for the associated quadrupole ratios reveal the impact of quark orbital angular momentum within the nucleon and $\ensuremath{\Delta}(1232)$; and we show that these quadrupole ratios do approach their predicted asymptotic limits, albeit slowly.

Nucleon axial form factors from two-flavour Lattice QCD

Abstract:We present preliminary results on the axial form factor $G_A(Q^2)$ and the induced pseudoscalar form factor $G_P(Q^2)$ of the nucleon. A systematic analysis of the excited-state contributions to form factors is performed on the CLS ensemble `N6' with $m_\pi = 340 \ \text{MeV}$ and lattice spacing $a \sim 0.05 \ \text{fm}$. The relevant three-point functions were computed with source-sink separations ranging from $t_s \sim 0.6 \ \text{fm}$ to $t_s \sim \ 1.4 \ \text{fm}$. We observe that the form factors suffer from non-trivial excited-state contributions at the source-sink separations available to us. It is noted that naive plateau fits underestimate the excited-state contributions and that the method of summed operator insertions correctly accounts for these effects.

Odd-Parity Nucleon Electromagnetic Transitions in Lattice QCD

Abstract:The parity-expanded variational analysis (PEVA) technique enables the isolation of opposite-parity eigenstates at finite momentum. The approach has been used to perform the first lattice QCD calculations of excited-baryon form factors. In particular, these calculations show that the low-lying odd-parity nucleon excitations are described well by constituent quark models at moderate u and d quark masses approaching the strange quark mass. Herein, we extend the PEVA technique to establish a formalism for the determination of odd-parity nucleon electromagnetic transition form factors in lattice QCD. The formalism is implemented in the first calculation of the helicity amplitudes for transitions from the ground state nucleon to the first two odd-parity excitations. Through a comparison with constituent quark model calculations of these amplitudes, these new results give important insight into the structure of these excitations. This work is a critical step towards confronting experimental electroproduction amplitudes for the $N^*(1535)$ and $N^*(1650)$ resonances with ab-initio lattice QCD calculations.

Abstract:High-precision nucleon-resonance electroproduction data on a large kinematic domain of energy and momentum transfer have proven crucial in revealing novel features of strong interactions within the Standard Model and unfolding structural details of baryon excited states. Thus, in anticipation of new data reaching to unprecedented photon virtuality, we employ a quark-diquark approximation to the three-valence-quark bound-state problem to compute gamma* p -> R+ and gamma*n -> R+ and gamma*n -> R-0 transition form factors on Q(2)/m(N)(2) epsilon [0, 12], where m(N) is the nucleon mass. Having simultaneously analyzed both charged and neutral channels, we also provide a quark-flavor separation of the transition form factors. The results should be useful in planning new-generation experiments.

Abstract:Predictions obtained with a confining, symmetry-preserving treatment of a vector ⊗ vector contact interaction at leading-order in a widely used truncation of QCD’s Dyson–Schwinger equations are presented for Δ and Ω baryon elastic form factors and the γN → Δ transition form factors. This simple framework produces results that are practically indistinguishable from the best otherwise available, an outcome which highlights that the key to describing many features of baryons and unifying them with the properties of mesons is a veracious expression of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in the hadron bound-state problem. The following specific results are of particular interest. The Δ elastic form factors are very sensitive to m Δ. Hence, given that the parameters which define extant simulations of lattice-regularised QCD produce Δ-resonance masses that are very large, the form factors obtained therewith are a poor guide to properties of the Δ(1232). Considering the Δ-baryon’s quadrupole moment, whilst all computations produce a negative value, the conflict between theoretical predictions entails that it is currently impossible to reach a sound conclusion on the nature of the Δ-baryon’s deformation in the infinite momentum frame. Results for analogous properties of the Ω baryon are less contentious. In connection with the N → Δ transition, the Ash-convention magnetic transition form factor falls faster than the neutron’s magnetic form factor and nonzero values for the associated quadrupole ratios reveal the impact of quark orbital angular momentum within the nucleon and Δ; and, furthermore, these quadrupole ratios do slowly approach their anticipated asymptotic limits.

Abstract:We calculate the axial $N\to \Delta(1232)$ and $N\to N^{\star}(1440)$ transition form factors in a chiral constituent quark model. As required by the partial conservation of axial current ($PCAC$) condition, we include one- and two-body axial exchange currents. For the axial $N\to \Delta(1232)$ form factors we compare with previous quark model calculations that use only one-body axial currents, and with experimental analyses. The paper provides the first calculation of all weak axial $N\to N^{\star}(1440)$ form factors. Our main result is that exchange currents are very important for certain axial transition form factors. In addition to improving our understanding of nucleon structure, the present results are relevant for neutrino-nucleus scattering cross section predictions needed in the analysis of neutrino mixing experiments.

Signatures of chiral dynamics in the Nucleon to Delta transition

Abstract:Utilizing the methods of chiral effective field theory we present an analysis of the electromagnetic $N\Delta$-transition current in the framework of the non-relativistic "small scale expansion" (SSE) to leading-one-loop order. We discuss the momentum dependence of the magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole and coulomb quadrupole transition form factors up to a momentum transfer of $Q^2<0.3$ GeV$^2$. Particular emphasis is put on the identification of the role of chiral dynamics in this transition. Our analysis indicates that there is indeed non-trivial momentum dependence in the two quadrupole form factors at small $Q^2<0.15$ GeV$^2$ arising from long distance pion physics, leading for example to negative radii in the (real part of the) quadrupole transition form factors. We compare our results with the EMR($Q^2$) and CMR($Q^2$) multipole-ratios from pion-electroproduction experiments and find a remarkable agreement up to four-momentum transfer of $Q^2\approx 0.3$ GeV$^2$. Finally, we discuss the chiral extrapolation of the three transition form factors at $Q^2=0$, identifying rapid changes in the (real part of the) quark-mass dependence of the quadrupole transition moments for pion masses below 200 MeV, which arise again from long distance pion dynamics. Our findings indicate that dipole extrapolation methods currently used in lattice QCD analyses of baryon form factors are not applicable for the chiral extrapolation of $N\Delta$ quadrupole transition form factors.

Abstract:Using a continuum approach to the hadron bound-state problem, we calculate ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\eta},{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ transition form factors on the entire domain of spacelike momenta, for comparison with existing experiments and in anticipation of new precision data from next-generation ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ colliders. One novel feature is a model for the contribution to the Bethe-Salpeter kernel deriving from the non-Abelian anomaly, an element which is crucial for any computation of $\ensuremath{\eta},{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ properties. The study also delivers predictions for the amplitudes that describe the light- and strange-quark distributions within the $\ensuremath{\eta},{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$. Our results compare favorably with available data. Important to this at large ${Q}^{2}$ is a sound understanding of QCD evolution, which has a visible impact on the ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ in particular. Our analysis also provides some insights into the properties of $\ensuremath{\eta},{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ mesons and associated observable manifestations of the non-Abelian anomaly.

Abstract:A symmetry-preserving continuum approach to the calculation of baryon properties in relativistic quantum field theory is used to predict all form factors associated with nucleon-to-$\Delta$ axial and pseudoscalar transition currents, thereby unifying them with many additional properties of these and other baryons. The new parameter-free predictions can serve as credible benchmarks for use in analysing existing and anticipated data from worldwide efforts focused on elucidation of $\nu$ properties.

Abstract:Electroproduction form factors describing the gamma* p -> Delta(+)(1232), Delta(+)(1600) transitions are computed using a fully dynamical diquark-quark approximation to the Poincare-covariant three-body bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory. In this approach, the Delta(1600) is an analogue of the Roper resonance in the nucleon sector, appearing as the simplest radial excitation of the Delta(1232). Precise measurements of the gamma* p -> Delta(+)(1232) transition already exist on 0 <= Q(2) less than or similar to 8 GeV2, and the calculated results compare favorably with the data outside the meson-cloud domain. The predictions for the gamma* p -> Delta(+)(1600) magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole transition form factors are consistent with the empirical values at the real photon point, and extend to Q(2) approximate to 6m(p)(2), enabling a meaningful direct comparison with experiment once analysis of existing data is completed. In both cases, the electric quadrupole form factor is particularly sensitive to deformation of the Delta-baryons. Interestingly, while the gamma* p -> Delta(+)(1232) transition form factors are larger in magnitude than those for gamma* p -> Delta(+)(1600) in some neighborhood of the real photon point, this ordering is reversed on Q(2) greater than or similar to 2m(p)(2), suggesting that the gamma* p -> Delta(+)(1600) transition is more localized in configuration space.
Chiral Behavior of K →π L Ν Decay Form Factors in Lattice QCD with Exact Chiral Symmetry

Abstract:We calculate the form factors of the $K \to \pi l \nu$ semileptonic decays in three-flavor lattice QCD, and study their chiral behavior as a function of the momentum transfer and the Nambu-Goldstone boson masses. Chiral symmetry is exactly preserved by using the overlap quark action, which enables us to directly compare the lattice data with chiral perturbation theory (ChPT). We generate gauge ensembles at a lattice spacing of 0.11fm with four pion masses covering 290-540 MeV and a strange quark mass m_s close to its physical value. By using the all-to-all quark propagator, we calculate the vector and scalar form factors with high precision. Their dependence on m_s and the momentum transfer is studied by using the reweighting technique and the twisted boundary conditions for the quark fields. We compare the results for the semileptonic form factors with ChPT at next-to-next-to leading order in detail. While many low-energy constants appear at this order, we make use of our data of the light meson electromagnetic form factors in order to control the chiral extrapolation. We determine the normalization of the form factors as f_+(0) = 0.9636(36)(+57/-35), and observe reasonable agreement of their shape with experiment.

Abstract:We present an exploratory study of the gluonic structure of the $\phi$ meson using lattice QCD (LQCD). This includes the first investigation of gluonic transversity via the leading moment of the twist-two double-helicity-flip gluonic structure function $\Delta(x,Q^2)$. This structure function only exists for targets of spin $J\ge1$ and does not mix with quark distributions at leading twist, thereby providing a particularly clean probe of gluonic degrees of freedom. We also explore the gluonic analogue of the Soffer bound which relates the helicity flip and non-flip gluonic distributions, finding it to be saturated at the level of 80%. This work sets the stage for more complex LQCD studies of gluonic structure in the nucleon and in light nuclei where $\Delta(x,Q^2)$ is an 'exotic glue' observable probing gluons in a nucleus not associated with individual nucleons.

Abstract:We present a unified description of elastic and transition form factors involving the nucleon and its resonances; in particular, the $N(1440)$, $\Delta(1232)$ and $\Delta(1600)$. We compare predictions made using a framework built upon a Faddeev equation kernel and interaction vertices that possess QCD-kindred momentum dependence with results obtained using a confining, symmetry-preserving treatment of a vector$\,\otimes\,$vector contact-interaction in a widely-used leading-order (rainbow-ladder) truncation of QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations. This comparison explains that the contact-interaction framework produces hard form factors, curtails some quark orbital angular momentum correlations within a baryon, and suppresses two-loop diagrams in the elastic and transition electromagnetic currents. Such defects are rectified in our QCD-kindred framework and, by contrasting the results obtained for the same observables in both theoretical schemes, shows those objects which are most sensitive to the momentum dependence of elementary quantities in QCD.
