Abstract:Phase pure, well-crystallized and homogeneous LiFePO4 powder with inverse opal structure was obtained by calcining the precursors of Li+, Fe2+ and PO43− in the presence of organic template of poly(styrene-methyl methacrylate-acrylic acid) latex micro-spheres under nitrogen atmosphere. The resultant products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), chemical titration, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Land 2001A electrochemical measurement system. Results indicated that after the decomposition of organic template, inverse opal structure and conductive carbon were left in the resultant products. With the large specific surface area resulting from inverse opal structure and with the conductive carbon, the products delivered satisfactory capacity and superior rate capability at room temperature, i.e., over 100mAh/g at the high current density of 5.9C.

Abstract:LiVPO4F is an attractive cathode material due to its high operating voltage, high energy density, and stable structure, but its application is still hindered by low electrical conductivity and complicated synthesis processes. Here, the microsphere LiVPO4F@C cathode material with a high discharge plateau and stable structures is synthesized by a simple hydrothermal reaction. The formation mechanisms of the microsphere LiVPO4F are clarified. Surfactant hexadecyl trimethylammonium bromide is self-assembled into a spherical micelle matrix during the hydrothermal reaction and formed the microsphere LiVPO4F@C particles through multilayer adsorption. Meanwhile, the effects of pH value and the content of LiF on the morphology, structure, and electrochemical performance of the LiVPO4F@C cathode material are investigated. When the value of pH is close to neutral, the fluorine can be effectively deposited to form spherical LiVPO4F. With the addition of LiF at a ratio of 1.4, the prepared LiVPO4F@C exhibits better crystallinity and uniform spherical morphology, with excellent rate capability and cycling stability and a capacity retention of 93.60% at 5C. This work provides a simple and effective preparation solution for exploring a high-performance LiVPO4F@C cathode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Two quaternary pyridinium-type cationic-based porous organic frameworks (DB-POF and LB-POF) were first synthesized via “one-pot” polymerization and were incorporated into a PEO/LiTFSI matrix as fillers to prepare a series of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) . The obtained quaternary pyridine-type cationic-based POFs not only have higher polarizability through the characteristic of skeleton charge but also have a stable structure and simple preparation, making them a good candidate material for achieving rapid Li+ conductivity in SPEs. Therefore, POFs could be incorporated into PEO-based SPEs that will have a positive impact on the ion transport capacity and the mechanical properties of SPEs and also increase the stability of the lithium metal anode. Among the obtained membranes, the PEO-LB-10% electrolyte exhibits the best ion conductivity, up to 5.8 × 10–4 S cm–1 at 90 °C, and has outstanding mechanical properties, and the tensile strength can reach 8.61 MPa. Significantly, the Li–S battery containing the PEO-LB-10% electrolyte indicates superior electrochemical performance, with an excellent initial discharge specific capacity of 906 mAh g–1 at 0.2 C. After 500 cycles at 1 C, its capacity remained at 472 mAh g–1, with an attenuation rate of 0.037% per cycle.

Abstract:Constructing a reliable and favorable electrode-electrolyte interface is crucial to utilize the exceptional energy storage capability in commercial lithium-ion batteries. Here, we report a facile synthesis approach for the lithium difluorophosphate (LiPO2F2) solution as an effective film-forming additive via direct adding the Li2CO3 into LiPF6 solution at 45 °C. Benefiting from the significantly reduced interface resistance (R SEI) and charge transfer impedance (R ct) of both the cathode and anode by adding the prepared LiPO2F2 solution into a baseline electrolyte, the cycling performance of the graphite||LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2 pouch cell is remarkably improved under all-climate condition.

Abstract:LiFePO4 was synthesized by heating an amorphous LiFePO4.The amorphous LiFePO4 obtained through lithiation of FePO4·xH2O by using oxalic acid as a novel reducing agent at room temperature.The effects of reaction temperature and time on the crystal structure,morphology and electrochemical properties of products were investigated.The results show that the sample synthesized at 600℃ for 12h has fine particle sizes between 100-200nm,and with homogenous sizes distribution.The synthesized LiFePO4 composites shows high electrochemical capacity of 165,160,156 and 154mAh/g at the 0.1,0.2,0.5 and 1C rate.The cell retains 98.8%,99.5%,99.1% and 99.6%of its initial discharge capacity after 50 cycles.

Abstract:Silicon anode usually endures the low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) in application for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), although the volume expansion and structural stability has been greatly improved under many efforts in the recent years. During the first charge and discharge, a large number of lithium ions can participate in the formation of solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on anode surface, such as LiF, LiCO 3 and many Li‐compounds, resulting in low efficiency particularly when the nano‐sized silicon was widely applied to solve the volume effect. Herein, we find that the lithium difluorophosphate (LiPO 2 F 2 , LiDFP) additive shows some special properties, which greatly improves the reversible capacity in the first discharge. The silicon nanoparticles can deliver an ICE of 70.6% containing 2 wt% LiDFP in electrolyte, which is increased by 17.7% compared with the cell without LiDFP (~52.9%). By the comparison of the XPS and NMR results, it indicates the LiDFP may reduces the amount of lithium ions involving in SEI reaction in electrolyte under the first discharge, thus the ICE can be improved.

Abstract:The electroactive lithium vanadium fluorophosphate phase, LiVPO4F (P1¯, a=5.1687(2)Å, b=5.3062(2)Å, c=7.5031(3)Å, α=66.856(2)°, β=67.004(2)°, γ=81.583(2)° and cell volume=174.21(1)Å3) has been synthesized by a two-step reaction scheme based on a carbothermal reduction (CTR) process. High-resolution electrochemical measurements reveal a structured voltage response for the lithium extraction process while the lithium insertion process proceeds via a two-phase reaction mechanism centered at around 4.2V versus Li. Performance evaluation of a graphite||LiVPO4F lithium-ion cell indicates an average discharge voltage of 4.06V coupled to an initial material utilization for the LiVPO4F of around 123mAhg−1. Long-term cycling of this lithium-ion system demonstrates good capacity retention over the first 300 cycles. Based on the available data we believe the LiVPO4F offers considerable promise as a viable cathode replacement for LiCoO2.

Abstract:A single-ion conductor polymer electrolyte was prepared and the effects of the ratio of isophthalic acid (IPA) to 4, 4’-diphenyl ether dicarboxylic acid (DPE) on the structure and electrochemical properties have been investigated. Results show that all the lithium sulfonated polyoxadiazoles (Li-SPODs) have excellent thermal stability (510 °C). The ionic conductivity of the Li-SPOD is 7.2 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at room temperature when the IPA/DPE ratio is 6/4. A high Coulombic efficiency of 99.1% for the LiFePO 4 /6/4 li-SPOD SPEs/Li half-cell could be achieved with a capacity retention of 90.63% at a current density of 0.1 C after 25 cycles.

Abstract:Solid-state polymer electrolytes have recently drawn intense attention as alternatives to traditional liquid electrolytes in lithium batteries due to their high energy-density and reliable safety. Unfortunately, current all-solid-state polymer electrolytes suffer from the low ionic conductivity, limiting the power density of energy storage batteries. Here, we propose a deep-eutectic electrolyte, formed directly by the interaction between poly (1,3-dioxolane) and lithium salt without other auxiliary solvents. The ionic conductivity of the designed deep-eutectic polymer electrolyte can approach to 1.5 × 10−5 S/cm at ambient temperature, which is twenty times higher than that of polyethylene oxide-based electrolytes. Specifically, solid-state NMR verifies the interaction between oxygen in poly (1,3-dioxolane) and lithium ion. The LiFePO4/Li battery assembled with deep-eutectic polymer electrolyte delivers a discharge capacity of 139.6 mAh/g at 0.1 C and a capacity retention of 90% after 200 cycles at 0.2 C. Pouch LiFePO4/Li batteries also present excellent safety performances. This finding provides a new approach for materials engineering of polymer electrolytes for advanced lithium batteries.

Abstract:A polyanion lattice engineering strategy is applied on LiFePO4, with planar triangle BO33− substituting tetrahedron PO43− to induce more flexibility and provide additional paths between Li‐ion diffusion channels. These synergetically contribute to accelerate the Li‐ion diffusion, which have outstanding high‐rate and low‐temperature battery performances. This method may be extended to the other polyanionic materials. Despite the widespread commercialization of LiFePO4 as cathodes in lithium‐ion batteries, the rigid 1D Li‐ion diffusion channel along the [010] direction strongly limits its fast charge and discharge performance. Herein, lattice engineering is developed by the planar triangle BO33− substitution on tetrahedron PO43− to induce flexibility in the Li‐ion diffusion channels, which are broadened simultaneously. The planar structure of BO33− may further provide additional paths between the channels. With these synergetic contributions, LiFe(PO4)0.98(BO3)0.02 shows the best performance, which delivers the high‐rate capacity (66.8 mAh g−1 at 50 C) and long cycle stability (ultra‐low capacity loss of 0.003% every cycle at 10 C) at 25 °C. Furthermore, excellent rate performance (34.0 mAh g−1 at 40 C) and capacity retention (no capacity loss after 2500 cycles at 10 C) at −20 °C are realized.

Abstract:Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with excellent solvating capacity toward lithium salts and easy processable feature is considered as the promising polymer electrolyte matrix for energy storage devices. However, the poor capacity and cycling performances of PEO-based batteries resulted from weak mechanical strength and electrochemical properties greatly limit its development. Herein, chiral polyurethane (HPU) with a unique helical configuration is integrated into PEO, and a well-defined microphase separation architecture is induced in the resulted hybrid. Besides the decreased crystallinity of PEO, the well-organized ordered and disordered microphase structure provides a "green channel" for Li+ transfer, contributing to a record lithium ion transference number of 0.43 for PEO-based dual-ion conductors. The mechanical strength and dimensional stability of PEO are significantly improved by the introduction of rigid helical segments and intermolecular hydrogen bondings. The electrochemical window and the ionic conductivity of the hybrid are 5.0 V (vs Li+/Li) and 4.92 × 10–5 S cm–1 (60 °C), respectively. By synergism of the decreased crystallinity and microphase separation, the LiFePO4/Li cell assembled with the optimized presents a high discharge capacity of 153 mA h g–1 at 0.1 C, and the capacity retention ratio is 83.6% after the 80th cycle with a Coulombic efficiency of approximately 99%. The growth of lithium dendrites is effectively inhibited, and the improved interfacial compatibility between and the Li metal electrode also plays a crucial role. Tri-phase (1-X-y) Li2FeSiO4·xLiFeBO3·yLiFePO4 Nested Nanostructure with Enhanced Li-storage Properties

Abstract:Although Li2FeSiO4 has the theoretical possibility to de-intercalate reversibly two Li+ from its structure (ca. 332 mAh g(-1)), the slow electronic/Li+ transports and poor capacity retention severely limit its potential application in advanced lithium ion batteries. Herein, to address such issues, a triple phase (1-x-y) Li2FeSiO4 center dot xLiFeBO(3)center dot yLiFePO(4) (denoted as (1-x-y) LFS center dot xLFB center dot yLFP) hybrid with a nested nanostructure is first synthesized through an in-situ sol-gel method. Compared with the pristine LFS, 0.92LFS.0.04LFB.0.04LFP exhibits greatly improved electrochemical performance (258.7 mAhg(-1), 0.1 C, 1.5-4.8 V, equivalent to 1.56 Li+ intercalation) due to low charge transfer impedance and Li+ diffusion energy barrier. Meanwhile, the participation of LFP avoids the instability of LFSIFB structures in the air. It also demonstrates that LFP and LFB can enhance the electronic/Li+ transport efficiency and cycling retention, and shed lights on the further searching for suitable dopants for Li-ion batteries.
Freestanding LiPON: from Fundamental Study to Uniformly Dense Li Metal Deposition Under Zero External Pressure

Abstract:Lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) is a well-known amorphous thin film solid electrolyte that has been extensively studied in the last three decades. Despite the promises to pair with Li metal anode and various cathode materials, the presence of rigid substrate and LiPONs unique amorphous, air-sensitive nature set limitations to comprehensively understand its intrinsic properties for future development and applications. This work demonstrates a methodology to synthesize LiPON in a freestanding form that exhibits remarkable flexibility and a Young s modulus of ~33 GPa. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ss-NMR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results with unprecedented high signal-to-noise ratio could be obtained with such freestanding LiPON (FS-LiPON), revealing the Li-LiPON interface bonding environments quantitatively and a well-defined glass transition temperature for LiPON. Combining interfacial stress and a seeding layer, FS-LiPON demonstrates a uniform and fully dense Li metal deposition without the aid of external pressure. Such a FS-LiPON film offers new opportunities for fundamental study of LiPON material and associated interfaces, and provides perspectives for interface engineering in bulk solid-state battery.

Abstract:A compositive synthesis of gel polymer electrolytes by blending poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) into poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) as a polymer host is proposed. The blending polymer is produced by a facile solution casting method and ester groups of PPC are successful introduced into PVDF-HFP. The gel polymer electrolyte displays an excellent ion conductivity of 1.18 x 10(-3) S cm(-1), broad electrochemical window up to 4.8 V (vs. Li/Li+) and outstanding electrochemical stability within rechargeable lithium batteries at room temperature. The improvement of ion conductivity is attributed to the decrease of polymer crystallizability and the increase of micro pores. Localized High Concentration Polymer Electrolyte Enabling Room Temperature Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries with Stable LiF-rich Interphases

Abstract:Polyvinylidene fluoride hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) based polymer electrolyte shows mechanical flexibility, soft and intimidate physical contact and good electrochemical stability, however, low ionic conductivity at room temperature and unstable interphases against Li metal hinder its application. In this article, we propose a universal strategy to prepare localized high concentration polymer electrolytes (LHCPE) in which high concentration lithium salt (LiTFSI) dissolved in tiny residual solvent (DMF) and the PVDF-HFP serves as solid dilution. The LHCPE regulates the solvation structure of lithium ions with anions instead of DMF solvent, allowing more anions to coordinate with Li+ and forming amount contact ion pairs (CIPs) and aggregates (AGGs). As a result, high ionic conductivity (5.9 x 10(-4) S cm(-1)) and low activation energy (0.10 eV) achieved. The LHCPE also induces the decomposition of anions-derived LiF-rich interphases, that is ionic conducive and mechanical robust, thereby greatly improving the charge transfer kinetics and stability towards Li metal anodes. Consequently, at 0.5 mA cm(-2) and 0.25 mAh cm(-2), stable and long-term cycling over 2000 h obtained under room temperature in Li//Li symmetric cells achieved. The full solid-state LFP//LHCPE//Li cells further exhibit excellent capacity retention of 82.83 % even after 1200 cycles at room temperature and a high rate of 8 C (1C=170 mAg(-1)). Our work shed light on the design of high-performance polymer-based composite electrolytes by manipulating the Li solvation structure.
In situ polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane and formation of fluorine/boron-rich interfaces enabled by film-forming additives for long-life lithium metal batteries

Abstract:In situ polymerized 1,3-dioxolane (PDOL) is widely utilized to construct solid polymer electrolytes because of its high room-temperature ionic conductivity and good compatibility with lithium metal. However, the current polymerization additives used in PDOL do not effectively contribute to the formation of a robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), leading to decreased cycle life. Herein, a film-forming Lewis acid, tris(hexafluoroisopropyl) borate (THB), is demonstrated not only to be a catalyst for the ring-opening polymerization of DOL, but also an additive for the formation of a stable fluorine- and boron-rich SEI to improve the interfacial stability and suppress the Li dendrite growth. Moreover, molecular dynamics simulations and experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of THB can promote the dissociation of lithium salt and release more Li+ while the boron site can effectively restrict the free movement of TFSI- anion, thus increasing Li+ transference numbers (0.76) and ensuring the long-term cycling stability of cells. By using THB-PDOL, a stable cycling of Li‖Li symmetric cell for 600 h at a capacity of 0.5 mA h cm-2 can be achieved. Furthermore, employing THB-PDOL in Li‖LiFePO4 full cell enables a capacity retention of 98.64% after 300 cycles at 1C and a capacity retention of 95.39% after 200 cycles at a high temperature (60 °C). At the same time, this electrolyte is also suitable for the Li‖NCM523 full cell, which also achieves excellent stability of more than 180 cycles. This film-forming Lewis acid additive provides ideas for designing low-cost, high-performance PDOL-based lithium metal batteries.
