Abstract:Environmental Microbiology has undergone a dramatic transition from being a somewhat marginal branch of Life Sciences to becoming one of the most vibrant and visible areas of contemporary research. The homonymous journal has not only borne witness of the growing interest in environmental microbes that bloomed since the mid-1980s but it has helped also to give visibility to the field and nucleate an active and influential community of authors and readers. During the past 20 years the focus has shifted from individual isolates to communities and microbiomes, from single genomes to metagenomes and from small/medium-scale experimental systems to large/very large scenarios. New challenges that were somewhat marginal when the journal was founded have acquired an unanticipated relevance owing to their impact on the global Earth's homeostasis. They include the unacceptably high atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases, the worrying pollution of the oceans with very recalcitrant plastics and microplastics and the noxious effects of micropollutants on many ecosystems. Global problems ask for global solutions and the environmental microbiome - because of its dimension and its amazing activities - may end up being out best instrument to both counter the impact of industrial development and enable a new, sustainable partnership with Nature.

Abstract:Applications of nanotechnology are touching almost every aspect of modern life. The increased use of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) in consumer products, chemical and medical equipment, information technology, and energy, among others, has increased the number of publications (informative and scientific) on ENMs. By the 1950s. very few papers were committed to nanomaterials (NMs), but in 2009, more than 80,000 journal articles included the concept nanotechnology. The objective of this review is to compile and analyze publications on NMs in the biennium 2008-2010. This review includes the most recent publications in risk assessment/toxicity, characterization and stability, toxicity, fate and transport of NMs in terrestrial ecosystems, and new ENMs. Carbon nanotubes, metallic, metal oxides and hydroxides nanoparticles, quantum dots, and polystyrene NPs are included. Abstract:Research on the field of nanomaterials in environment has continued to be a major area of interest in recent years. To present the up-to-date progress in this field, a bibliometric study is conducted to analyze 7087 related publications in the Science Citation Index (SCI) core collection of Web of Science based on the expanded SCI. These publications are identified through using representative keywords in the research directions environment of the Web of Science. This study finds that China and the United States dominate the field; one difference between them is that China issued more independent publications and the United States issued more cooperative publications. In addition, the number of the related publications in Asian countries has exceeded that of European and American ones. A Chinese institution, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has an absolute dominance in this field. Traditional high-impact environmental journals have ruled this field. The number of publications in the Energy and Environmental Science field has gradually decreased. In addition, a co-citation analysis shows that previous studies in this field can be divided into four major branches, and that graphene oxide and nano-inorganic particles are increasingly becoming research hotspots.

Abstract:Nanomaterials in the Earth system Nanomaterials have been part of the Earth system for billions of years, but human activities are changing the nature and amounts of these materials. Hochella Jr. et al. review sources and impacts of natural nanomaterials, which are not created directly through human actions; incidental nanomaterials, which form unintentionally during human activities; and engineered nanomaterials, which are created for specific applications. Knowledge of the properties of all three types as they cycle through the Earth system is essential for understanding and mitigating their long-term impacts on the environment and human health. Abstract:Since the launch of the U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) in 2000, research and development in nanotechnology innovation has come a long way worldwide. Based on the Web of Science database, the total SCIindexed papers surged from 971 in 2000 to 13, 546 in 2014, and the momentum remains strong. One of the most active and productive research fields has been environmental applications and implications of nanomaterials and nanotechnologies. Environmental nanotechnologies have shown great potential to fundamentally change the conventional practices in environmental cleanup. While the development of innovative cleanup technologies continues to evolve, our understanding of the environmental implications/impacts associated with the booming applications of nanotechnologies in various fields has also deepened. The objectives of this special issue were to: 1) promote exchanges of ideas and information on the latest development of environmental nanotechnologies, 2) facilitate development of more cost-effective and “greener” cleanup technologies based on innovative nanomaterials and nanotechnologies, 3) address limitation and potential environmental impacts of nanotechnologies and nanomaterials, and 4) identify major knowledge gaps and research directions. Due to the capacity limit, we can only include 20 papers in this issue from a large pool of high-quality submissions, including 14 research papers addressing applications, four papers on environmental impacts/implications, and two critical review papers. The applications are focused on adsorption, and redox or catalytic degradation of contaminants in water and potentially in soil. The nanomaterials encompass carbonaceous nanomaterials including carbon nanotubes, hydroxyapatite, metal oxides, zero-valent metals including iron, metal catalysts, iron-carbon composite microspheres, and TiO2 nanotubes. The implication papers address interactions of carbonaceous materials with wastewater biomass, effects of zinc oxide on soil microorganisms, effects of nano-silicon on lead in rice cultivars, and toxicity of engineered TiO2 nanoparticles, whereas the critical reviews thoroughly examine applications of nano-sized magnetite and hollow nanomaterials. While most of these works deal with water treatment, it appears that more research is needed to develop novel in situ nanotechnologies for remediation of soil and groundwater and to address impacts of nanoparticles in the subsurface on the biogeochemical conditions. As environmental nano-research continues to thrive, we hope this special issue will inspire even greater innovation and discoveries in the field. Abstract:The purpose of this study is to summarize the underlined progress of land science related research published in Nature andScience from 2000 to 2016, and to provide the outlook for the leading edge of land science in these two magazines. The method of literature review is applied in this paper. The results show that 1)land resource protection, ecological effects of land use, land carbon emissions, effects of urbanization, farmland intensive utilization and land management strategies are the major concerns on land science related topics ofNature andScience; 2)These two magazines mainly devote to the global land issues, involving diversified data and multidisciplinary research methods characterized by originality, importance and crossing. It is concluded that global natural resource mapping and accounting, global land change mapping and monitoring, global farmland use program, interrelationship between land and social-ecologic system and novel strategic system for land administration should be the underlined direction for land science in nearly future.

Abstract:The development of engineered nanotechnology has necessitated a commensurate maturation of nanoanalysis capabilities. Building off a legacy established by electron microscopy and light-scattering, environmental nanoanalysis has now benefited from ongoing advancements in instrumentation and data analysis, which enable a deeper understanding of nanomaterial properties, behavior, and impacts. Where once environmental nanoparticles and colloids were grouped into broad 'dissolved or particulate' classes that are dependent on a filter size cut-off, now size distributions of submicron particles can be separated and characterized providing a more comprehensive examination of the nanoscale. Inductively coupled plasma-quadrupole mass spectrometry (ICP-QMS), directly coupled to field flow fractionation (FFF-ICP-QMS) or operated in single particle mode (spICP-MS) have spearheaded a revolution in nanoanalysis, enabling research into nanomaterial behavior in environmental and biological systems at expected release concentrations. However, the complexity of the nanoparticle population drives a need to characterize and quantify the multi-element composition of nanoparticles, which has begun to be realized through the application of time-of-flight MS (spICP-TOFMS). Despite its relative infancy, this technique has begun to make significant strides in more fully characterizing particulate systems and expanding our understanding of nanoparticle behavior. Though there is still more work to be done with regards to improving instrumentation and data processing, it is possible we are on the cusp of a new nanoanalysis revolution, capable of broadening our understanding of the size regime between dissolved and bulk particulate compartments of the environment.

Abstract:As an introduction to the special issue on "emerging nanotechnologies", this paper puts in perspective contemporary debates and challenges about nanotechnology. It presents an overview of diverse analyses and expectations about this presumably revolutionary set of technological, scientific and industrial developments. Three main lines of argument can then be delineated: first of all, the degree of cumulativeness of science and technologies and the respective roles of newcomers and incumbents in the industrial dynamics; second the knowledge dynamics in nanotechnologies, especially the linkages by science and technology and third the role of institutions (network, geographic agglomeration and job market). It finally discusses methodologies to delineate the field of nanotechnologies and to collect data.

Abstract:This perspective addresses some of the key lessons learned in nanosafety research during the past 15 years with an emphasis on nano‐bio interactions (interactions of nanomaterials with biological systems), in particular, the bio‐corona and eco‐corona. The authors also present a bibliometric survey of nanotoxicological research (2000–2022). Engineered nanomaterials offer numerous benefits to society ranging from environmental remediation to biomedical applications such as drug or vaccine delivery as well as clean and cost‐effective energy production and storage, and the promise of a more sustainable way of life. However, as nanomaterials of increasing sophistication enter the market, close attention to potential adverse effects on human health and the environment is needed. Here a critical perspective on nanotoxicological research is provided; the authors argue that it is time to leverage the knowledge regarding the biological interactions of nanomaterials to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the human health and environmental impacts of these materials. Moreover, it is posited that nanomaterials behave like biological entities and that they should be regulated as such.

Abstract:Exploration of the structure formation and dynamics of animate and inanimate matter on the nanometer scale is a highly interdisciplinary field of rapidly emerging research. It is relevant for various molecular and nanoscale systems of different origins and compositions and concerns numerous phenomena originating from physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science. This topical issue presents a collection of research papers devoted to different aspects of the Dynamics of Systems on the Nanoscale. Some of the contributions discuss specific applications of the research results in several modern and emerging technologies, such as controlled nanofabrication with charged particle beams or the design and practical realization of novel gamma-ray crystal-based light sources. Most works presented in this topical issue were reported at the joint Sixth International Conference "Dynamics of Systems on the Nanoscale" and the tenth International Symposium "Atomic Cluster Collisions" (DySoN-ISACC 2021), which were held in Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy, in October 2021.
