Abstract:We discuss the implications of generative AI on education across four critical sections: the historical development of AI in education, its contemporary applications in learning, societal repercussions, and strategic recommendations for researchers. We propose ways in which generative AI can transform the educational landscape, primarily via its ability to conduct assessment of complex cognitive performances and create personalized content. We also address the challenges of effective educational tool deployment, data bias, design transparency, and accurate output verification. Acknowledging the societal impact, we emphasize the need for updating curricula, redefining communicative trust, and adjusting to transformed social norms. We end by outlining the ways in which educational stakeholders can actively engage with generative AI, develop fluency with its capacities and limitations, and apply these insights to steer educational practices in a rapidly advancing digital landscape.

Abstract:Despite existing research on AI applications in education (AIEd), the release of ChatGPT has disrupted the status quo in the educational landscape. Although this technology can personalize learning, decrease teacher workload, and offer access to a wealth of information, concerns around generative AI (GenAI) tools have emerged, including academic integrity, data accuracy, and bias in information. Given research highlights and acknowledging educators’ varied levels of awareness and conflicting views toward AIEd, two teacher educators (also authors of this paper) in the Faculty of Education at Brock University facilitated three workshops among different groups of teacher educators. The workshops focused on the emerging nature of GenAI tools, their affordances, and their implications for educators’ practices. Adopting a narrative inquiry approach, the authors describe the details of these workshops and present their reflections on the process of preparing for and facilitating them. Abstract:The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and the expanding integration of large language models (LLMs) have ignited a debate about their application in education. This study delves into university instructors' experiences and attitudes toward AI language models, filling a gap in the literature by analyzing educators' perspectives on AI's role in the classroom and its potential impacts on teaching and learning. The objective of this research is to investigate the level of awareness, overall sentiment towardsadoption, and the factors influencing these attitudes for LLMs and generative AI-based tools in higher education. Data was collected through a survey using a Likert scale, which was complemented by follow-up interviews to gain a more nuanced understanding of the instructors' viewpoints. The collected data was processed using statistical and thematic analysis techniques. Our findings reveal that educators are increasingly aware of and generally positive towards these tools. We find no correlation between teaching style and attitude toward generative AI. Finally, while CS educators show far more confidence in their technical understanding of generative AI tools and more positivity towards them than educators in other fields, they show no more confidence in their ability to detect AI-generated work.

Abstract:This paper explores the transformative impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) on teachers' roles and agencies in education, presenting a comprehensive framework that addresses teachers' perceptions, knowledge, acceptance, and practices of GenAI. As GenAI technologies, such as ChatGPT, become increasingly integrated into educational settings, teachers are required to adapt to evolving classroom dynamics, where AI plays a significant role in content creation, personalized learning, and student engagement. However, existing literature often treats these factors in isolation, overlooking how they collectively influence teachers' ability to effectively integrate GenAI into their pedagogical practices. This paper fills this gap by proposing a framework that categorizes teachers into four roles -- Observer, Adopter, Collaborator, and Innovator -- each representing different levels of GenAI engagement, outlining teachers' agencies in GenAI classrooms. By highlighting the need for continuous professional development and institutional support, we demonstrate how teachers can evolve from basic GenAI users to co-creators of knowledge alongside GenAI systems. The findings emphasize that for GenAI to reach its full educational potential, teachers must not only accept and understand its capabilities but also integrate it deeply into their teaching strategies. This study contributes to the growing literature on GenAI in education, offering practical implications for supporting teachers in navigating the complexities of GenAI adoption.

Abstract:Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools have become increasingly accessible and have impacted school education in numerous ways. However, most of the discussions occur in higher education. In schools, teachers' perspectives are crucial for making sense of innovative technologies. Accordingly, this qualitative study aims to investigate how GenAI changes our school education from the perspectives of teachers and leaders. It used four domains – learning, teaching, assessment, and administration – as the initial framework suggested in a systematic literature review study on AI in education. The participants were 88 school teachers and leaders of different backgrounds. They completed a survey and joined a focus group to share how ChatGPT and Midjounery had a GenAI effect on school education. Thematic analysis identified four main themes and 12 subthemes. The findings provide three suggestions for practices: know-it-all attitude, new prerequisite knowledge, interdisciplinary teaching, and three implications for policy: new assessment, AI education, and professional standards. They also further suggest six future research directions for GenAI in education.

Abstract:The aim of this narrative review is to understand how Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically generative AI (e.g. ChatGPT) is thought to be used to support teachers in content authoring and curriculum production. Our findings indicate that Generative AI is envisioned as a co-design partner in enhancing educational content such as rubrics, lesson plans, interactive exercises, analogies, reflective questions, and case studies tailored to learning goals and instructional needs. The literature suggests that the key issues with the use of ChatGPT in education can be summarised mainly around its accuracy, and reliability, and its potential to lead to plagiarism. The analysis of empirical studies on the use of generative AI in higher education revealed first insights into themes such as ChatGPT's role in administrative tasks, varied perceptions of AI, generational differences in attitudes, multifunctional roles of ChatGPT, concerns about academic integrity and need for AI literacy, and the call for teaching philosophy reform, around assessment.
Generative AI and Teachers -- For Us or Against Us? A Case Study

Abstract:We present insightful results of a survey on the adoption of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) by university teachers in their teaching activities. The transformation of education by GenAI, particularly large language models (LLMs), has been presenting both opportunities and challenges, including cheating by students. We prepared the online survey according to best practices and the questions were created by the authors, who have pedagogy experience. The survey contained 12 questions and a pilot study was first conducted. The survey was then sent to all teachers in multiple departments across different campuses of the university of interest in Sweden: Luleå University of Technology. The survey was available in both Swedish and English. The results show that 35 teachers (more than half) use GenAI out of 67 respondents. Preparation is the teaching activity with the most frequency that GenAI is used for and ChatGPT is the most commonly used GenAI. 59% say it has impacted their teaching, however, 55% say there should be legislation around the use of GenAI, especially as inaccuracies and cheating are the biggest concerns.

Abstract:There has been widespread media commentary about the potential impact of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT on the Education field, but little examination at scale of how educators believe teaching and assessment should change as a result of generative AI. This mixed methods study examines the views of educators ( n = 318) from a diverse range of teaching levels, experience levels, discipline areas, and regions about the impact of AI on teaching and assessment, the ways that they believe teaching and assessment should change, and the key motivations for changing their practices. The majority of teachers felt that generative AI would have a major or profound impact on teaching and assessment, though a sizeable minority felt it would have a little or no impact. Teaching level, experience, discipline area, region, and gender all significantly influenced perceived impact of generative AI on teaching and assessment. Higher levels of awareness of generative AI predicted higher perceived impact, pointing to the possibility of an 'ignorance effect'. Thematic analysis revealed the specific curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment changes that teachers feel are needed as a result of generative AI, which centre around learning with AI, higher-order thinking, ethical values, a focus on learning processes and face-to-face relational learning. Teachers were most motivated to change their teaching and assessment practices to increase the performance expectancy of their students and themselves. We conclude by discussing the implications of these findings in a world with increasingly prevalent AI.

Abstract:Generative Artificial Intelligence has rapidly expanded its footprint of use in educational institutions. It has been embraced by students, faculty, and staff alike. The technology is capable of carrying out a sustained sequence of interactive dialogs and creating reasonably meaningful text. Not surprisingly it seems to be routinely used by faculty to generate questions and assignments, by students to submit assignments and aid in self-learning, and administration to create manuals, memoranda, and policy documents. With its potential to lead to significant social innovation, tethering on the verge of becoming a disruptive technology, it seems most unlikely that it will fade away without being fully enfolded into almost all aspects of academic and pedagogical activity. While it is early to predict the exact place of this technology in education, we present thoughts to aid deliberations and give a brief review of the opportunities and challenges.

Abstract:Generative models are now capable of producing natural language text that is, in some cases, comparable in quality to the text produced by people. In the computing education context, these models are being used to generate code, code explanations, and programming exercises. The rapid adoption of these models has prompted multiple position papers and workshops which discuss the implications of these models for computing education, both positive and negative. This paper presents results from a series of semi-structured interviews with 12 students and 6 instructors about their awareness, experiences, and preferences regarding the use of tools powered by generative AI in computing classrooms. The results suggest that Generative AI (GAI) tools will play an increasingly significant role in computing education. However, students and instructors also raised numerous concerns about how these models should be integrated to best support the needs and learning goals of students. We also identified interesting tensions and alignments that emerged between how instructors and students prefer to engage with these models. We discuss these results and provide recommendations related to curriculum development, assessment methods, and pedagogical practice. As GAI tools become increasingly prevalent, it's important to understand educational stakeholders' preferences and values to ensure that these tools can be used for good and that potential harms can be mitigated.

Abstract:Purpose Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) has seen exponential growth in recent years due to its capability to generate original content through natural language processing and comprehensive language models. This paper aims to investigate the transformative impact of GAI on higher education, focusing on the evolving roles of faculty in the classroom. Design/methodology/approach Using a phenomenological perspective and a process approach, the study involved 25 semi-structured interviews with academicians in higher education. Findings The findings reveal that GAI currently creates biased and commercially driven learning environments, challenging traditional pedagogical models. Despite its potential for enhancing education, the autonomous nature of GAI often prioritizes commercial interests over pedagogical goals. Research limitations/implications The study is limited to faculty perspectives, suggesting future research should include student viewpoints and diverse educational contexts. Practical implications The study highlights the need for higher education institutions to develop comprehensive policies, provide training for faculty and students and design new courses that leverage GAI for personalized learning experiences and enhanced faculty research. Originality/value This paper contributes to the emerging literature on GAI's impact on education, highlighting its dual nature as both a transformative tool and a potential threat to traditional educational roles and outcomes.
Transforming Teacher Education in Developing Countries: The Role of Generative AI in Bridging Theory and Practice

Abstract:This study examines the transformative potential of Generative AI (GenAI) in teacher education within developing countries, focusing on Ghana, where challenges such as limited pedagogical modeling, performance-based assessments, and practitioner-expertise gaps hinder progress. GenAI has the capacity to address these issues by supporting content knowledge acquisition, a role that currently dominates teacher education programs. By taking on this foundational role, GenAI allows teacher educators to redirect their focus to other critical areas, including pedagogical modeling, authentic assessments, and fostering digital literacy and critical thinking. These roles are interconnected, creating a ripple effect where pre-service teachers (PSTs) are better equipped to enhance K-12 learning outcomes and align education with workforce needs. The study emphasizes that GenAI's roles are multifaceted, directly addressing resistance to change, improving resource accessibility, and supporting teacher professional development. However, it cautions against misuse, which could undermine critical thinking and creativity, essential skills nurtured through traditional teaching methods. To ensure responsible and effective integration, the study advocates a scaffolding approach to GenAI literacy. This includes educating PSTs on its supportive role, training them in ethical use and prompt engineering, and equipping them to critically assess AI-generated content for biases and validity. The study concludes by recommending empirical research to explore these roles further and develop practical steps for integrating GenAI into teacher education systems responsibly and effectively.

Abstract:Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) can be used to author academic texts at a similar level to what humans are capable of, causing concern about its misuse in education. Addressing the role of GenAI in teaching and learning has become an urgent task. This study reports the results of a survey comparing educators' (n = 68) and university students' (n = 158) perceptions on the appropriate use of GenAI in the writing process. The survey included representations of user prompts and output from ChatGPT, a GenAI chatbot, for each of six tasks of the writing process (brainstorming, outlining, writing, revising, feedback, and evaluating). Survey respondents were asked to differentiate between various uses of GenAI for these tasks, which were divided between student and teacher use. Results indicate minor disagreement between students and teachers on acceptable use of GenAI tools in the writing process, as well as classroom and institutional-level lack of preparedness for GenAI. These results imply the need for explicit guidelines and teacher professional development on the use of GenAI in educational contexts. This study can contribute to evidence-based guidelines on the integration of GenAI in teaching and learning.

Abstract:The advancements in Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) provide opportunities to enrich educational experiences, but also raise concerns about academic integrity. Many educators have expressed anxiety and hesitation in integrating GenAI in their teaching practices, and are in needs of recommendations and guidance from their institutions that can support them to incorporate GenAI in their classrooms effectively. In order to respond to higher educators' needs, this study aims to explore how universities and educators respond and adapt to the development of GenAI in their academic contexts by analyzing academic policies and guidelines established by top-ranked U.S. universities regarding the use of GenAI, especially ChatGPT. Data sources include academic policies, statements, guidelines, and relevant resources provided by the top 100 universities in the U.S. Results show that the majority of these universities adopt an open but cautious approach towards GenAI. Primary concerns lie in ethical usage, accuracy, and data privacy. Most universities actively respond and provide diverse types of resources, such as syllabus templates, workshops, shared articles, and one-on-one consultations focusing on a range of topics: general technical introduction, ethical concerns, pedagogical applications, preventive strategies, data privacy, limitations, and detective tools. The findings provide four practical pedagogical implications for educators in teaching practices: accept its presence, align its use with learning objectives, evolve curriculum to prevent misuse, and adopt multifaceted evaluation strategies rather than relying on AI detectors. Two recommendations are suggested for educators in policy making: establish discipline-specific policies and guidelines, and manage sensitive information carefully.

Abstract:The launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 precipitated a panic among some educators while prompting qualified enthusiasm from others. Under the umbrella term Generative AI, ChatGPT is an example of a range of technologies for the delivery of computer-generated text, image, and other digitized media. This paper examines the implications for education of one generative AI technology, chatbots responding from large language models, or C-LLM. It reports on an application of a C-LLM to AI review and assessment of complex student work. In a concluding discussion, the paper explores the intrinsic limits of generative AI, bound as it is to language corpora and their textual representation through binary notation. Within these limits, we suggest the range of emerging and potential applications of Generative AI in education.

Abstract:Generative AI (Gen AI), exemplified by ChatGPT, has witnessed a remarkable surge in popularity recently. This cutting-edge technology demonstrates an exceptional ability to produce human-like responses and engage in natural language conversations guided by context-appropriate prompts. However, its integration into education has become a subject of ongoing debate. This review examines the challenges of using Gen AI like ChatGPT in education and offers effective strategies. To retrieve relevant literature, a search of reputable databases was conducted, resulting in the inclusion of twenty-two publications. Using Atlas.ti, the analysis reflected six primary challenges with plagiarism as the most prevalent issue, closely followed by responsibility and accountability challenges. Concerns were also raised about privacy, data protection, safety, and security risks, as well as discrimination and bias. Additionally, there were challenges about the loss of soft skills and the risks of the digital divide. To address these challenges, a number of strategies were identified and subjected to critical evaluation to assess their practicality. Most of them were practical and align with the ethical and pedagogical theories. Within the prevalent concepts, "ChatGPT" emerged as the most frequent one, followed by "AI," "student," "research," and "education," highlighting a growing trend in educational discourse. Moreover, close collaboration was evident among the leading countries, all forming a single cluster, led by the United States. This comprehensive review provides implications, recommendations, and future prospects concerning the use of generative AI in education.

Abstract:The emergence of Chat GPT has once again sparked a wave of information revolution in generative artificial intelligence. This article provides a detailed overview of the development and technical support of generative artificial intelligence. It conducts an in-depth analysis of the current application of generative artificial intelligence in the field of education, and identifies problems in four aspects: opacity and unexplainability, data privacy and security, personalization and fairness, and effectiveness and reliability. Corresponding solutions are proposed, such as developing explainable and fair algorithms, upgrading encryption technology, and formulating relevant laws and regulations to protect data, as well as improving the quality and quantity of datasets. The article also looks ahead to the future development trends of generative artificial intelligence in education from four perspectives: personalized education, intelligent teaching, collaborative education, and virtual teaching. The aim of the study is to provide important reference value for research and practice in this field.

Abstract:In November 2022, Open Artificial Intelligence (AI) launched the controversial generative AI tool named ChatGBT-plus or ChatGPT-4 (Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer) which has been available to users via the website in February 2023. Since then, its use in the classroom environment has been debated. Various scholars, especially in the field of computer sciences, provided insights into its functioning and genesis on its possible negative use and impact particularly in the education sector. Therefore, there is a need for teachers' and students' insights vis-a-vis this robot with a global perspective. This exploratory study on 236 university educators based in India revealed mixed perceptions of using ChatGPT as a learning and teaching tool. Surveyed educators are aware of it and its acceptance as teaching tool is still limited. In the conclusion, the study proposed potential research avenues about the use OpenAI in education.
