Abstract:By using HS 6-digit trade data,this paper analyzes empirically the relative export sophistication of China compared with some developed coun-tries from three aspects: export overlapping index,export relative average unit val-ue and the value based on different level of product sophistication.Different from many current literatures,this paper finds: there is a gap between China’s export sophistication and that in developed countries,and this gap is even larger on the level of high-technology intensive product,and China is still making ef-forts to catch up with developed countries on the level of middle-technology in-tensive product.Accordingly,this paper argues that,for one thing,with the rapid development of intra-product specialization and differentiated products,internation-al specialization is becoming multicore.Under this background,there is no mani-festation that difference between "specializations" taken by China and devel-oped countries is becoming smaller and smaller.What’s more,China’s export sophistication still lags behind developed countries.So expansion of Chinese ex-port will not lead to so called wage inequality and trade terms deterioration in developed countries,for another,to improve China’ s export sophistication should consider the current comparative advantage and follow the trend of interna-tional specialization evolvement.

Abstract:China's export structure has shown a rapid shift towards more sophisticated industries. While some believe that this trend is a result of processing trade and foreign direct investment, the evidence is mixed. This paper examines variations in level of export sophistication across China's manufacturing industries. We find that an industry's level of export sophistication is positively related to the share of wholly foreign owned enterprises from OECD countries and the share of processing exports of foreign-invested enterprises, and negatively related to the share of processing exports of indigenous Chinese enterprises. Evidence from the relative export prices of Chinese goods, which measure within-product export sophistication, shows a similar pattern.
The puzzle of quality upgrading of Chinese exports from the trade liberalization perspective

Abstract:Trade liberalization could accelerate the process of quality upgrading through the competition effect. However, that the quality of Chinese exports exhibits an opposite performance pattern is puzzling. The present paper uses a framework based on multiproduct firms to analyse the mechanism of how the product quality of exports is affected by trade liberalization to explain this puzzle. The model includes two major mechanisms: the competition effect and the market effect. There is a huge gap in the influence on the product quality of exports between a decrease in tariff barriers and non-tariff barriers: firms' product quality increases (decreases) when non-tariff barriers (tariff barriers) fall. The data of Chinese firms from 2001 to 2011 supports this conclusion. Further research reveals that the influence of trade liberalization on the product quality of exports in China varies among different types of firms.

Abstract:This study investigates the distinct effects of imported intermediate and capital goods on manufacturing firms' overall and domestic sophistication. We use the plausible exogenous tariff reductions caused by China's accession to the World Trade Organization to construct firm-level instrumental variables for the import intensity of intermediate and capital goods. Empirical results demonstrate that imported intermediate goods increase firms' overall sophistication, but decrease firms' domestic sophistication. By contrast, imported capital goods increase overall and domestic sophistication. Mechanism tests reveal that imported intermediate and capital goods expand firms' production scale. However, only capital goods have innovation induction and human capital complementary effects, while intermediate goods may substitute for human capital. This study has significant implications by revealing the existence of both complementary and substitution effects of imported inputs on China's domestic technological upgrading.

Abstract:We extend the theoretical model of Antoniades (2015, Heterogeneous Firms, quality, and trade. Journal of International Economics, 95(2), 263-273) to analyze the impact of export demand shocks on the quality of multi-product firms. Using Chinese micro-data, we find that positive export demand shocks significantly promote the export quality of multi-product firms, but the impact decreases as firm productivity increases. In addition to the scale effect and the competition effect, the intensified competition caused by the expansion of export demand will induce firms to skew their export sales towards the best performing products. Our findings elucidate the importance of the resource reallocation effect in the study of trade-induced export performance.
An Analysis on the Status Quo and Evolvement Mechanism for Export Technical Sophistication of China's Silk Industry

Abstract:Based on the status quo of China’s silk industry development during 1992 ～2011,this study estimated and calculated export technical sophistication of China’s silk industry and conducted investigations on distribution and evolvement of the technical structure in exportation trade of China’s silk industry both horizontally and vertically.Furthermore,a dynamic panel data model was built to analyze the evolvement mechanism of silk industry export technical sophistication.The following two conclusions were drawn.Firstly,the export technical sophistication of China’s silk industry experienced an N shaped trend.Its development was rapid after entering the 21st century,but its absolute value of export technical sophistication ranked behind other countries,meaning that China was only a big country but not a strong country in silk export.Secondly,the major driving force for the evolvement of export technical sophistication of China’s silk industry was GDP per capita of which the driving effect is still having the tendency of being enhanced.Except for GDP per capita,export price of silk was also a driving force for increment of silk industry export technical sophistication,while export value is becoming another driving force for promotion of export technical sophistication.

Abstract:Technology upgrading and the surge of transnational corporations and the rise of other factors propelled the world’s intra-product labor division and trade development.Compared with inter-product trade,intra-product trade better utilizes the comparative advantage of each country or region and the value-adding strength of the various links on the product value chain differs tremendously.China’s intra-product trade is heavily characterized by processing trade which is at the lower-end of the value chain with less value-adding capability.Besides,China’s intra-product trade is principally supported by foreign capital and thus there is a high risk of market substitution.Given this,we must mange a transition from static comparative advantage to dynamic comparative advantage,materializing an increase in the value-adding strength of the intra-product value chain.By referring to the status quo of China’s intra-product trade,this paper suggests that China should place emphasis on developing its semi-finished product industry as a countermeasure to neutralize the disadvantage that may be possibly brought about by intra-product trade.
Agglomeration Economy and the Evolution of Export Sophistication in China

Abstract:Improving the sophistication of export products is an important project to increase the competitiveness and growth momentum in China. Based on the statistics ( 2000―2011 ) of the General Administration of Customs of China, this paper establishes different types of indicators of agglomeration economy and technical sophistication, and attempts to explore the underlying micro-mechanisms for export upgrading in China. We find that agglomeration economy significantly reduces sophisticated product entry barriers and exit risks, where product sophistication is captured using a measure developed by Hausmann and Hidalgo (2009 ). To be specific, variety influentially contributes more to the introduction of new products. However, specialization increases the probability of exit of sophisticated products. This paper has expanded basic relationship between agglomeration and export growth, and is helpful for further understanding of China's export upgrading.

Abstract:What matters for China’s future growth is not the volume of exports, but whether China will continue to enhance the export competitiveness of high-tech products. Using the export data of 25 countries from 1998 to 2019, this paper measures the export technological sophistication of machinery and transport equipment and constructs an empirical model to study the impact factors of export technological sophistication of machinery and transport equipment in China. The results show that the export technological sophistication is not high, although the export volume of machinery and transportation equipment is large. FDI, human capital, and the previous phase of export technological sophistication have a significant positive effect on the technological sophistication of export; however, the abundant natural resource has a significant negative effect. Finally, some countermeasures and suggestions are put forward based on the empirical results.

Markets and Markups: A New Empirical Framework and Evidence on Exporters from China

Abstract:We develop a new empirical framework to analyse destination-specific markup and quantity adjustments to bilateral exchange rates by exporters. The framework offers two methodological innovations. First, we develop an unbiased estimator of the markup elasticity that correctly isolates marginal costs in large unbalanced panels where the set of markets served by firms varies endogenously with currency movements. Second, we exploit Chinese linguistics to process characters recorded in Chinese custom forms to build a novel, general, product classification distinguishing high and low differentiation goods|which we can use to proxy for exporters' market power. Applying this framework to exporters from China over 2000-2014, we document substantial heterogeneity in destination-specific markup elasticities across product classes and firm types. Conditional on a price change, the average markup elasticity for highly differentiated consumption goods is 32%; markup adjustments explain three quarters of incomplete pass through into import prices for these goods. In contrast, the average for low-differentiation intermediates is only 5%, suggesting that pricing for these goods responds to global, rather than local, economic conditions. Markup elasticities are higher for both state-owned and foreign-invested enterprises than for private enterprises, which, on average, pursue aggressively competitive strategies throughout our sample.
Spillover Effects of Foreign Direct Investment on Export Sophistication: Evidence from Chinese Domestic Manufacturing Firms

Abstract:The rapid growth of China's export sophistication and the driving factors are a matter of discussion in the literature. This study constructs a new measurement for net sophistication by utilizing the world input-output database and excluding the technologies embodied in foreign inputs. We find that although China's net sophistication has been increasing, it is much lower than that of developed countries. Based on new measurements, we explore the impact of FDI on domestic firms' net sophistication in China using data from 2000 to 2010. The results suggest that FDI has competition effects on domestic firms. Net sophistication may increase in the short term as domestic firms adjust their production by reducing the use of foreign technology to reduce costs. However, this increase in net sophistication is not sustainable without technological upgrades. Under long-term competition from foreign firms, domestic firms' net sophistication decreases. Our findings provide clear policy implications for labor-rich developing countries that seek to upgrade exports by attracting FDI.

Abstract:This paper constructs a unique dataset of Chinese firm-level bilateral cross-border e-commerce exports using the back-end online logistics database of a famous Chinese logistics platform to study the impact of destination country's institutional quality on Chinese cross-border e-commerce export. Our results show that the institutional quality of destination countries significantly boosts China's cross-border e-commerce exports. Institutional quality has a more significant effect on the extensive margin than the intensive margin. Mechanism analysis shows that institutional quality significantly stimulates export entry, export survival, and continuous exports. Furthermore, destination country's institutional quality has a greater impact on cross-border e-commerce export than on traditional export.

Abstract:This study explores the impact of Internet penetration on the firm-product-level behaviour of multi-product exporters. While a substantial body of literature has explored the effect of the Internet on firm performance, especially extensive and intensive margins, few studies examine the product-level behaviour within firms. Using highly disaggregated firm-product-level data covering Chinese manufacturing industrial firms from 2000 to 2007, we provide evidence on the effects of the Internet on product mix and product switching within firms. Specifically, because of the reduction in export market entry costs, the Internet can encourage more firms to enter the export market and increase market competition, which causes multi-product exporters to skew exports towards best-performing products and drop the products furthest away from its core competence. Meanwhile, the Internet can increase multi-exporters' productivity and encourage firms to introduce new products, which are also further away from the core product. Productivity and competition cause multi-product exporters to exhibit product switching, which results in the expansion of product scope.

Abstract:Purpose Considerable research has been conducted on the comparative advantage of Chinese manufactured exports before 2000, but too little attention has been focused on the twenty‐first century. With this rapid growth of China's export volume since 2001, what is the change in comparative advantage? Have qualitative changes taken place? The purpose of this paper is to conduct a thorough analysis of the comparative advantage of Chinese manufactures from 2002 to 2009, not only within the world market but also in the US market. Design/methodology/approach The research is based on 144 manufactures' comparative advantage in the US and world market, displaying the distribution and variation range for the comparative advantage of Chinese manufactures at different technological levels in the 2002‐2009 period with the RCA Index. This paper classifies 144 kinds of manufactures (on Standard International Trade Classification, Rev. 3 data) by technology level into five general groups and nine small groups, which cover the majority of Chinese manufactured exports. Findings First, the authors found that types of Chinese manufactured products with comparative advantage in both world and US markets are increasing. Most of the products with comparative advantage are low technology (LT) products. Second, in the world market, the comparative advantage of Chinese medium technology (MT) products has largely improved, but their RCA indexes are low and their kinds of products with very high comparative advantage are small. Third, as a whole, Chinese manufactured exports are of greater comparative advantage in the world market than in the US market. Specifically, LT products have the same position in world and US markets, while MT products and high technology (HT) products obviously have a greater comparative advantage in the world market. Originality/value First, little research has been conducted on the comparative advantage of Chinese manufactured exports since 2001. This paper undertakes a thorough analysis of the comparative advantage of Chinese manufactures from 2002 to 2009, not only within the world market but also in the US market. Second, it is very important for China to stabilize the overseas market demand and secure exports, this paper shows how China could cope with a crisis.
Comparative Advantage, Exchange Rate and Exports in China

Abstract:Based on revealed comparative advantage indices, the patterns of China's exports are studied empirically at not only national level but also provincial level. The statistic results have demonstrated that China has changed its export strategy to coincide with the law of comparative advantage. However, there is a distinct difference in export patterns between the coastal region and the interior region, which may partly explain the divergence in the growth rate of GDP or income between them. In addition, econometric estimates of export equations provide evidence the real effective exchange rate, comparative advantage strategy as well as domestic supply and foreign demand have theory-expected impacts on export, which also show market force is playing a more important role in China's exports.
Exchange Rate Pass-Through to China'S Export Price: A Product-Level Investigation

Abstract:Exchange rate movement usually results in changes in the production costs of exporting firms, and, therefore, the prices and the quantity of traded products. The present paper constructs a theoretical model to demonstrate that export products with higher productivity, or with larger market share, or of higher quality will experience a less complete pass-through. Using the six-digit harmonized system export data from the CEPII database over the period of 2000 to 2013, the present paper examines how product heterogeneity affects the exchange rate pass-through of Chinese exports. The empirical results show that the most competitive Chinese export products, or those least affected by exchange rate risks, are those of higher quality, with higher technological complexity and at the high end of the international value chain. Therefore, Chinese exporting firms should pay more attention to improving export quality and upgrading technology to better cope with exchange rate risks and to enjoy more bargaining power in the international market.

Abstract:Based on Chinese industrial firm information and international transaction data from 2003 to 2013, we construct a currency overvaluation index across 297 cities in China. Using the innovative index, we present that currency overvaluation significantly promotes the export product quality of Chinese manufacturing enterprises, which is conceivably due to increased import of intermediate goods. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that the impact is more pronounced for medium-sized firms, domestic invested firms, and firms in non-mega cities. By investigating the driving forces of export product quality improvement, we provide clear policy implications for government and firms pursuing long-term development.

Abstract:Based on firm-level Chinese Customs and Industrial Production micro data for 2000–2013, this study investigates the impact of exchange rate fluctuations on the quality of products imported by Chinese manufacturing firms. The empirical results show that exchange rate appreciation upgrades the quality of imported products through the price effect, new product variety effect, and competitive effect channels, and by improving the quality of exported products. Our empirical results are robust after considering several potential problems. Furthermore, we find that the quality of products imported by firms with lower productivity, fewer financing constraints, non-core products, low market share, foreign-invested and private enterprises and countries with higher level of economic development upgrade more in respond to exchange rate appreciation. These results imply that exchange rate appreciation is an important way to encourage firms to upgrade the quality of imported products.

Abstract:Along with the increasingly fierce European debt crisis, China which has excessive reliance on European and American markets is stepping up to emerging markets, especially in developing countries markets. In order to improve the international competitiveness of China's export products in emerging markets, this paper calculates SITC Rev3 to 5 digital 2600 kinds of manufactured goods technical complexity through the measure of export commodities technical complexity index. Based on manufactured goods technical complexity, each kind of manufactured goods is arranged and classified from small to large according to its technical complexity. Finally, export share of China and 11 emerging economies in every category of products is calculated, construct of export technical structure of each economy. The paper analyzes trade competition domain, trade development space and potential as well as dynamic change of the mutual trade alternative domain and mutual trade development space between China and emerging economies. Results show that: since China's entry into WTO, technical structure of manufactured goods export has been updated, but the speed lagged behind India. India is a potential competitor. Compared with India and Vietnam, China doesn 't have an advantage over low technical manufactured goods. Compared with Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, Brazil and Mexico, China is in a disadvantage position over high technical and above-average technical manufactured goods. Under this circumstances, China has a risk of falling into middle-income trap. Accordingly, the authors put forward policy suggestions of optimizing technical structure of export between China and each emerging economies and stepoing over middle-income trap.
Evolution of the specialization of China’s exports according to their technological content

Abstract:The objective of this study is to analyze how China's export specialization (and its global trade position in general) has evolved according to technological content for the 1987–2015 period. To that end, first, exports are classified by technological content to analyze the evolution of their composition. Second, the export specialization is studied using the Revealed Comparative Advantage Index. Then, the evolution of China's competitive position in the world trade in goods is analyzed according to their technological content using three indices that combine export and import data: the Relative Trade Balance index, the Contribution to the Trade Balance index and the Market Position index. The results obtained confirm that the technological content of Chinese exports has shown a remarkable improvement, mainly in some high-technology (electrical and electronic products) and in medium-technology (mechanical engineering products) products. Nevertheless, China's greatest trade strength continues to be products with low technological content.
