Does China’s Export Sophistication Reach Level in Developed Countries

Abstract:By using HS 6-digit trade data,this paper analyzes empirically the relative export sophistication of China compared with some developed coun-tries from three aspects: export overlapping index,export relative average unit val-ue and the value based on different level of product sophistication.Different from many current literatures,this paper finds: there is a gap between China’s export sophistication and that in developed countries,and this gap is even larger on the level of high-technology intensive product,and China is still making ef-forts to catch up with developed countries on the level of middle-technology in-tensive product.Accordingly,this paper argues that,for one thing,with the rapid development of intra-product specialization and differentiated products,internation-al specialization is becoming multicore.Under this background,there is no mani-festation that difference between "specializations" taken by China and devel-oped countries is becoming smaller and smaller.What’s more,China’s export sophistication still lags behind developed countries.So expansion of Chinese ex-port will not lead to so called wage inequality and trade terms deterioration in developed countries,for another,to improve China’ s export sophistication should consider the current comparative advantage and follow the trend of interna-tional specialization evolvement.
