General Existence of Flexural Mode Doublets in Nanowires Targeting Vectorial Sensing Applications

Abstract:Nanowires (NWs) are one of the fundamental building blocks for nanoscale devices, and have been frequently utilized as mechanical resonators. Earlier studies show that ultra-sensitive vectorial sensing toolkits can be fabricated by changing the flexural mode of NWs to oscillation doublets along two orthogonal directions. Based on in silico studies and the Timoshenko beam theory, this work finds that the dual orthogonal flexural mode of NWs can be effectively controlled through the proper selection of their growth direction. It is found that metallic NWs with a directional-independent shear modulus possess a single flexural mode. However, NWs with a directional-dependent shear modulus naturally exhibit flexural mode doublets, which do not disappear even with increasing slenderness ratio. Further studies show that such a feature generally exists in other NWs, such as Si NWs. Mimicking a pendulum configuration as used in NW-based scanning force microscopy, the cantilevered < 110 > Si NW demonstrates zeptogram mass resolution and a force sensitivity down to the order of 10(-24) N Hz(-1/2) (yN Hz(-1/2)) in both transverse directions. The findings in this work open up a new and facile avenue to fabricate 2D vectorial force sensors, which could enable ultra-sensitive and novel detection devices/systems for 2D effects, such as the anisotropy strength of atomic bonds.
Embedded Hybrid-Dimensional Heterointerface for Filament Modulation in 2D Material-Based Artificial Nociceptor

Abstract:Nociceptors are key sensory receptors that transmit warning signals to the central nervous system in response to painful stimuli. This fundamental process is emulated in an electronic device by developing a novel artificial nociceptor with an ultrathin, nonstoichiometric gallium oxide (GaOx)-silicon oxide heterostructure. A large-area 2D-GaOx film is printed on a substrate through liquid metal printing to facilitate the production of conductive filaments. This nociceptive structure exhibits a unique short-term temporal response following stimulation, enabling a facile demonstration of threshold-switching physics. The developed heterointerface 2D-GaOx film enables the fabrication of fast-switching, low-energy, and compliance-free 2D-GaOx nociceptors, as confirmed through experiments. The accumulation and extrusion of Ag in the oxide matrix are significant for inducing plastic changes in artificial biological sensors. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy demonstrate that Ag clusters in the material dispersed under electrical bias and regrouped spontaneously when the bias is removed owing to interfacial energy minimization. Moreover, 2D nociceptors are stable; thus, heterointerface engineering can enable effective control of charge transfer in 2D heterostructural devices. Furthermore, the diffusive 2D-GaOx device and its Ag dynamics enable the direct emulation of biological nociceptors, marking an advancement in the hardware implementation of artificial human sensory systems.
A Micro-wires Based Tactile Sensor for Prosthesis.

Abstract:Tactile sensor is indispensable in prosthesis for object manipulation. This study presented a novel tactile sensor based on the conductive micro-wires that can measure the normal and shear forces. The developed sensor consists of four layers, from bottom to top are the substrate supporting, polyimide based matrix circuit, micro-wire based sensing, and top surface bump layers, respectively. To improve the sensing performance, structural dimensions were optimized. According to the optimization results, analytical models and finite element analysis (FEA) were conducted to study the normal and shear force sensing performance of the sensor. To develop the tactile sensor, the carbon-black based conductive polymer was firstly fabricated, and then the conductive micro-wires were manufactured by using the method of micro-contact printing (μCP). The results demonstrate that the machined micro-wires have dimensions of 250 μm in width and 50 μm in height.

Abstract:In this paper, a new type of thermal actuator based on photo-thermal expansion is introduced. The basic idea is using a high power laser beam to heat one arm of the actuator. Different temperatures of the two arms will lead to different thermal expansions, which result in lateral deflection at the connection free end. We first give a theoretical model and use experiment data to prove its validity. Applying the presented model we investigate the influence of the facular position and area on the lateral deflection. Photo-thermal actuators are in millimeter-scale size and easy to fabricate, and they can output micro-scale displacement. They use laser beam to transfer power avoiding the presence of electric current, so they can be applied in many special fields.

Abstract:3D printing of arbitrary shapes and unique architectures offers unparalleled flexibility and simplicity for fabrication of highly complex 3D conformal electronics. It drives up high demands in electronic materials with excellent processability and functionality simultaneously. Herein, we overcome this challenge in prepared nanofiller/polymer piezoelectric composite by incorporating ultralow loadings (0.2 wt%) of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) in photocurable polymer solution. Furthermore, two effective approaches are introduced to significantly boost the piezoelectric responses through tuning inorganic-polymer interfacial compatibility and structural strain variation. The microstructured piezoelectric composites containing 0.2 wt% functionalized BNNTs exhibits an unprecedentedly high relative sensitivity of (120 mV/(kPa·wt%)) over a broad press region (1–400 kPa), which is 10-fold higher than that of flat composite containing unmodified BNNTs. This dramatic enhancement is ascribed to synergistic contribution from effective stress transfer efficiency between strong piezoelectric BNNTs and nonpiezoelectric polymers, and the improved structural strain variations by topology optimization of microstructures. The as-printed piezoelectric materials are successfully demonstrated as self-powered and conformal tactile sensor array to enable haptic sensing of robotic hand and detect spatial distribution of force on uneven surfaces. Our works provide a promising route for design and fabrication of novel conformal electronics with target performance by high-resolution 3D printing from rational design of materials to optimization of microstructures topology.

Abstract:We here demonstrate the multifunctional properties of atomically thin heterojunctions that are enabled by their strong interfacial interactions and their application toward self-powered sensors with unprecedented performance. Bonding between tin diselenide and graphene produces thermoelectric and mechanoelectric properties beyond the ability of either component. A record-breaking ZT of 2.43 originated from the synergistic combination of graphene's high carrier conductivity and SnSe2-mediated thermal conductivity lowering. Moreover, spatially varying interaction at the SnSe2/graphene interface produces stress localization that results in a novel 2D-crack-assisted strain sensing mechanism whose sensitivity (GF = 450) is superior to all other 2D materials. Finally, a graphene-assisted growth process permits the formation of high-quality heterojunctions directly on polymeric substrates for flexible and transparent sensors that achieve self-powered strain sensing from a small temperature gradient. Abstract:Abstract Mechano-sensitive hair-like sensilla (MSHS) have an ingenious and compact three-dimensional structure and have evolved widely in living organisms to perceive multidirectional mechanical signals. Nearly all MSHS are iontronic or electronic, including their biomimetic counterparts. Here, an all-optical mechano-sensor mimicking MSHS is prototyped and integrated based on a thin-walled glass microbubble as a flexible whispering-gallery-mode resonator. The minimalist integrated device has a good directionality of 32.31 dB in the radial plane of the micro-hair and can detect multidirectional displacements and forces as small as 70 nm and 0.9 μN, respectively. The device can also detect displacements and forces in the axial direction of the micro-hair as small as 2.29 nm and 3.65 μN, respectively, and perceive different vibrations. This mechano-sensor works well as a real-time, directional mechano-sensory whisker in a quadruped cat-type robot, showing its potential for innovative mechano-transduction, artificial perception, and robotics applications.

Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting from Two-Dimensional Boron Nitride Nanoflakes

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) piezoelectric hexagonal boron nitride nanoflakes (h-BN NFs) were synthesized by a mechanochemical exfoliation process and transferred onto an electrode line-patterned plastic substrate to characterize the energy harvesting ability of individual NFs by external stress. A single BN NF produced alternate piezoelectric output sources of ∼50 mV and ∼30 pA when deformed by mechanical bendings. The piezoelectric voltage coefficient (g11) of a single BN NF was experimentally determined to be 2.35 × 10-3 V·m·N-1. The piezoelectric composite composed of BN NFs and an elastomer was spin-coated onto a bulk Si substrate and then transferred onto the electrode-coated plastic substrates to fabricate a BN NFs-based flexible piezoelectric energy harvester (f-PEH) which converted a piezoelectric voltage of ∼9 V, a current of ∼200 nA, and an effective output power of ∼0.3 μW. This result provides a new strategy for precisely characterizing the energy generation ability of piezoelectric nanostructures and for demonstrating f-PEH based on 2D piezomaterials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials (2Dm) offer a unique insight into the world of quantum mechanics including van der Waals (vdWs) interactions, exciton dynamics and various other nanoscale phenomena. 2Dm are a growing family consisting of graphene, hexagonal-Boron Nitride (h-BN), transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), monochalcogenides (MNs), black phosphorus (BP), MXenes and 2D organic crystals such as small molecules (e.g., pentacene, C8 BTBT, perylene derivatives, etc.) and polymers (e.g., COF and MOF, etc.). They exhibit unique mechanical, electrical, optical and optoelectronic properties that are highly enhanced as the surface to volume ratio increases, resulting from the transition of bulk to the few- to mono- layer limit. Such unique attributes include the manifestation of highly tuneable bandgap semiconductors, reduced dielectric screening, highly enhanced many body interactions, the ability to withstand high strains, ferromagnetism, piezoelectric and flexoelectric effects. Using 2Dm for mechanical resonators has become a promising field in nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) for applications involving sensors and condensed matter physics investigations. 2Dm NEMS resonators react with their environment, exhibit highly nonlinear behaviour from tension induced stiffening effects and couple different physics domains. The small size and high stiffness of these devices possess the potential of highly enhanced force sensitivities for measuring a wide variety of un-investigated physical forces. This review highlights current research in 2Dm NEMS resonators from fundamental physics and an applications standpoint, as well as presenting future possibilities using these devices.

Abstract:Piezoelectric microsystems are of use in areas such as mechanical sensing, energy conversion and robotics. The systems typically have a planar structure, but transforming them into complex three-dimensional (3D) frameworks could enhance and extend their various modes of operation. Here, we report a controlled, nonlinear buckling process to convert lithographically defined two-dimensional patterns of electrodes and thin films of piezoelectric polymers into sophisticated 3D piezoelectric microsystems. To illustrate the engineering versatility of the approach, we create more than twenty different 3D geometries. With these structures, we then demonstrate applications in energy harvesting with tailored mechanical properties and root-mean-square voltages ranging from 2 mV to 790 mV, in multifunctional sensors for robotic prosthetic interfaces with improved responsivity (for example, anisotropic responses and sensitivity of 60 mV N −1 for normal force), and in bio-integrated devices with in vivo operational capabilities. The 3D geometries, especially those with ultralow stiffnesses or asymmetric layouts, yield unique mechanical attributes and levels of functionality that would be difficult or impossible to achieve with conventional two-dimensional designs.

Abstract:Human skin is equipped with slow adapting (SA) and fast adapting (FA) capabilities simultaneously. To mimic such functionalities, elaborately designed devices have been explored by integrating multiple sensing elements or adopting multimode sensing principles. However, the complicated fabrication, signal mismatch of different modules, complex operation, and high power‐consumption hinder their widespread applications. Here, a new type of single‐mode and self‐powered mechanoreceptor that can mimic both SA and FA via seamless fusion of complementary while compatible potentiometric and triboelectric sensing principles is reported. The resultant potentiometric–triboelectric hybridized mechanoreceptor exhibits distinctive features that are hard to achieve via currently existing methods, including single‐mode output (only voltage signal), greatly simplified operation (single‐measurement setup), ultralow power‐consumption (<1 nW), self‐adaptive response behavior, and good capability for resolving complex stimuli. Diverse mechanical characteristics, including magnitude, duration, frequency, applying and releasing speed, can be well interpreted with this single‐mode and self‐powered mechanoreceptor. Its promising application for monitoring object manipulations with a soft robotic gripper is explored. Furthermore, the versatility of the mechanoreceptor for resolving complex stimuli in diverse daily scenarios is demonstrated. This work presents a new design that will significantly simplify the fabrication/operation and meanwhile boost the functionality/energy‐efficiency of future electronic devices and smart systems.

Biomimetic flexible strain sensor with high linearity using double conducting layers

Abstract:Herein, inspired by the structure of lateral line scale, which is a sensory organ of fish, a biomimetic flexible fiber strain sensor is proposed. This sensor was designed using a simple and controllable layer-by-layer dip coating process to construct double conducting layers in a cylindrical sandwich structure. Additionally, a novel structure of conducting-medium-substrate was used for the fiber strain sensor via the introduction of modification layer. The biomimetic strain sensor exhibits sensing characteristics of dynamic response, gauge factor (GF) (∼2.0 for 50% strain) fast response time (∼60 ms), and long-term durability over 3000 cycles. Furthermore, ultrahigh linearity of R2>0.992 (adjusted R-squared) or δ <10% (nonlinear error) (the linear trend is valid both for stretch and release up to 50 % strain) for the strain sensor was realized owing to the sensing mechanism of double conducting layers based on the bioinspired design. Our flexible strain sensors with double conducting layers can provide ideas for the design of novel bionic flexible devices. Furthermore, its application in wearable electronics, human-computer interaction, dexterous hand master-slave system, and robot teleoperation is promising.

Abstract:Biomimetic mechanosensors have profound implications for various areas, including health care, prosthetics, human‒machine interfaces, and robotics. As one of the most important parameters, the sensitivity of mechanosensors is intrinsically determined by the detection resolution to mechanical force. In this manuscript, we expand the force detection resolution of current biomimetic mechanosensors from the micronewton to nanonewton scale. We develop a nanocrack-based electronic whisker-type mechanosensor that has a detection resolution of 72.2 nN. We achieve the perception of subtle mechanical stimuli, such as tiny objects and airflow, and the recognition of surface morphology down to a 30 nm height, which is the finest resolution ever reported in biomimetic mechanosensors. More importantly, we explore the use of this mechanosensor in wearable devices for sensing gravity field orientation with respect to the body, which has not been previously achieved by these types of sensors. We develop a wearable smart system for sensing the body's posture and movements, which can be used for remote monitoring of falls in elderly people. In summary, the proposed device offers great advantages for not only improving sensing ability but also expanding functions and thus can be used in many fields not currently served by mechanosensors.
A Phenomenological Framework for Modeling of Nonlinear Mechanical Responses in Soft Network Materials with Arbitrarily Curved Microstructures

Abstract:Soft network materials (SNMs), consisting of rationally designed filamentary microstructures distributed periodically in lattice patterns, offer high air permeability, excellent defect insensitivity and highly tunable mechanical properties that could match precisely those of biological tissues. Owing to these excellent physical properties, SNMs have been widely used in stretchable electronics, biomedical engineering, soft robotics, and other areas. Although a few theoretical models were developed previously to predict nonlinear J-shaped stress–strain curves of SNMs with horseshoe microstructures, these models are not applicable to SNMs with arbitrarily curved microstructures. Herein, we establish a phenomenological framework capable of predicting nonlinear mechanical responses of SNMs with arbitrarily curved microstructures and various lattice topologies. The phenomenological framework incorporates a two-segment model that exploits simple, explicit expressions to capture the J-shaped stress–strain relationship, and a machine learning (ML) approach that enables the determination of the single phenomenological parameter in the model. Both finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental measurements on a diversity of SNMs have been conducted to validate the phenomenological model. The developed model enables a rapid inverse design of biomimetic SNMs for reproducing the target J-shaped stress–strain curves of soft biological tissues, and can be also extended to model anisotropic mechanical responses of SNMs with horseshoe microstructures. The versatile applicability of the phenomenological framework suggests that it can serve as a reliable design tool of SNMs for uses in tissue engineering and bioelectronics.

Abstract:Micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) micro-pressure sensors have wide applications in consumer electronics, industrial monitoring, and biomedicine. However, as the next-generation portable and wearable devices bloom in recent years, existing design of pressure sensors faces great challenges to break the trade-off between the sensitivity and nonlinearity in the miniaturization process. Here, we report a sandwich-like Graphene/h-BN/Graphene-resistor heterostructure sensing element for micro-pressure detection. This novel design decouples pressure-to-strain translation process and strain-to-electrical signal sensing process by the insulation of bottom graphene structure layer and top graphene piezoresistive layer. We reveal the effects of the heterostructure dimensions, layer number and pretension on the mechanical performance utilizing finite element method (FEM) simulation, and propose the design principle of the piezoresistors and patterning strategy of the heterostructure. Remarkably, the heterostructure exhibits ultra-high sensitivity per unit area, outperforming state-of-art graphene and silicon-based sensors by up to five orders of magnitude, as well as a significant reduction of the nonlinearity. Our work shows tremendous potential of 2D material heterostructure as a promising platform to break the miniaturization limitation of ultrasensitive pressure sensors.

The study of the mechanical properties of 2D materials plays an important role in next‐generation flexible mechanical electronic device applications. Unfortunately, traditional experiment models and measurement methods are not suitable for 2D materials due to their atomically ultrathin thickness, which limits both the theoretical research and practical value of the 2D materials. In this review, we briefly summarize the characterization of mechanical properties of 2D materials by in situ probe nanoindentation experiments, and discuss the effect of thickness, grain boundary, and interlayer interactions. We introduce the strain‐induced effect on electrical properties and optical properties of 2D materials. Then, we generalize the mechanical sensors based on various 2D materials and their future potential applications in flexible and wearable electronic devices. Finally, we discuss the state of the art for the mechanical properties of 2D materials and their opportunities and challenges in both basic research and practical applications.

Fabrication and Characterization of Electrically Conductive 3D Printable TPU/MWCNT Filaments for Strain Sensing in Large Deformation Conditions

Abstract:This research focuses on 3D printable thermoplastic polyurethane filaments embedded with multi‐walled carbon nanotubes for enhanced strain sensing in large deformations. It explores the electromechanical properties of the filaments, identifying a conductive threshold in the composite material. The study also examines the application of these filaments in flexible structures, particularly for soft robotics and wearable electronics. This study investigates the development of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) filaments incorporating multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) to enhance strain‐sensing capabilities. Various MWCNT reinforcement ratios are used to produce customized feedstock for fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printing. Mechanical properties and the piezoresistive response of samples printed with these multifunctional filaments are concurrently evaluated. Surface morphology and microstructural observations reveal that higher MWCNT weight percentages increase filament surface roughness and rigidity. The microstructural modifications directly influence the tensile strength and strain energy of the printed samples. The study identifies an apparent percolation threshold within the 10–12 wt.% MWCNT range, indicating the formation of a conductive network. At this threshold, higher gauge factors are achieved at lower strains. A newly introduced Electro‐Mechanical Sensitivity Ratio (ESR) parameter enables the classification of composite behaviors into two distinct zones, offering the ability to tailor self‐sensing structures with on‐demand properties. Finally, flexible structures with proven application in soft robotics and shape morphing are fabricated and tested at different loading conditions to demonstrate the potential applicability of the custom filaments produced. The results highlight a pronounced piezoresistive response and superior load‐bearing performance in the examined structures.
3D Printing-Induced Hierarchically Aligned Nanocomposites With Exceptional Multidirectional Strain Sensing Performance

Abstract:High-performance sensors capable of detecting multidirectional strains are indispensable to understand the complex motions involved in flexible electronics. Conventional isotropic strain sensors can only measure uniaxial deformations or single stimuli, hindering their practical application fields. The answer to such challenge resides in the construction of engineered anisotropic sensing structures. Herein, a hierarchically aligned carbon nanofiber (CNF)/polydimethylsiloxane nanocomposite strain sensor is developed by one-step 3D printing. The precisely controlled printing path and shear flow bring about highly aligned nanocomposite filaments at macroscale and orientated CNF network within each filament at microscale. The periodically orientated nanocomposite filaments along with the inner aligned CNF network successfully control the strain distribution and the appearance of microcracks, giving rise to anisotropic structural response to external deformations. The synergetic effect of the multiscale structural design leads to distinguishable gauge factors of 164 and 0.5 for applied loadings along and transverse to the alignment direction, leading to an exceptional selectivity of 3.77. The real-world applications of the hierarchically aligned sensors in multiaxial movement detector and posture-correction device are further demonstrated. The above findings propose new ideas for manufacturing nanocomposites with engineered anisotropic structure and properties, verifying promising applications in emerging wearable electronics and soft robotics.
Observation of a giant two-dimensional band-piezoelectric effect on biaxial-strained graphene

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials used in the development of nanoscale mechanical sensors, actuators and energy harvesters have received much attention. More recently, devices made of graphene are of particular interest because of graphene’s intriguing electronic and mechanical properties. Intrinsic graphene has long been considered devoid of the piezoelectric effect, although flexoelectricity has been exploited to demonstrate piezoelectricity in functionalized graphene and graphene nanoribbons. The perceived lack of this property has restricted graphene’s use in nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) for electromechanical coupling purposes. Here an unprecedented two-dimensional (2D) piezoelectric effect on a strained/unstrained graphene junction is reported. In stark contrast to the bulk piezoelectric effect that results from the occurrence of electric dipole moments in solids, the 2D piezoelectric effect arises from the charge transfer along a work function gradient introduced by the biaxial-strain-engineered band structure. The observed effect, termed the band-piezoelectric effect, exhibits an enormous magnitude due to the ultrathin structure of graphene. On the basis of the band-piezoelectric effect, a graphene nanogenerator and a pressure gauge were fabricated. The results not only provide a versatile NEMS platform for sensing, actuating and energy harvesting, but also pave the way for efficiently modulating graphene via strain engineering.
