Abstract:In this Letter, waveguide beam splitters (1 x 3) with type I modifications are fabricated in a LiNbO3 crystal by femtosecond laser direct writing. The influence of the relative positions of three sub-waveguides on power splitting ratios are investigated in detail and the corresponding output intensities as functions of the relative positions in the numerical simulation are plotted, which are in good accordance with the experimental results. In addition, the waveguide beam splitter with a 1:1:1 splitting ratio is fabricated by changing the relative widths of the three branch-waveguides. Guiding performances at 532 nm are measured and analyzed by a typical end-face coupling system. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the beam splitting ratio of the waveguide splitter can be precisely regulated by the positions and widths of the sub-waveguides.

Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.

Abstract:We propose and theoretically demonstrate an integrated polarization beam splitter on the x-cut lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform. The device is based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with an anisotropy-engineered multi-section phase shifter. The phase shift can be simultaneously controlled for the TE and TM polarizations by engineering the length and direction of the anisotropic LNOI waveguide. For TE polarization, the phase shift is -π/2, while for TM polarization, the phase shift is π/2. Thus, the incident TE and TM modes can be coupled into different output ports. The simulation results show an ultra-high polarization extinction ratio of ∼47.7 dB, a low excess loss of ∼0.9 dB and an ultra-broad working bandwidth of ∼200 nm. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed structure is the first integrated polarization beam splitter on the x-cut LNOI platform.

Abstract:A compact polarization beam splitter based on a triple-waveguide plasmonic directional coupler is proposed and modeled. The directional coupler consists of two usual lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) ridge waveguides and a metal-capped plasmonic LNOI waveguide located between them. It utilizes stronger polarization dependence of modal birefringence of a plasmonic waveguide. By appropriately designing the plasmonic waveguide geometry, the TM component wave meets the resonant coupling condition and outputs at cross port. Instead, the TE component wave does not meet the resonant coupling condition, cannot be resonant in the triple-waveguide directional coupler and outputs at through port directly. Excellent performance is expected for an optimal device. First, the device shows an ultra-high polarization extinction ratio(PER) of 28.3 dB and an ultra-low insertion loss(IL) of 0.06 dB for the TE-polarized wave, and of 31.7 dB and of 0.31 dB in order for the TM-polarized wave. Second, the working bandwidth with PER > 25 dB and IL 20 dB and IL < 0.4 dB is 30 nm (1534–1564 nm) for the TM-polarized wave. Third, the device has a compact structure of 33 μm in length and exhibits definite fabrication tolerance. Overall, the proposed device exhibits ultra-high PER and ultra-low IL, and has a compact size suitable for on-chip use. A comparison shows that present device exhibits advantage in IL and/or size over that based on other LNOI structures or the SOI platform.

Abstract:Polarization devices on lithium niobate thin film (LNTF) are vital components for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) on the novel platform. Because both linear and nonlinear devices on the anisotropic platform are intrinsically polarization-dependent. Here, we demonstrate compact polarization beam splitters (PBS) on LNTF based on two asymmetric directional couplers with an effective length of only 180 μm. The PBS is fabricated via a single-step electron beam lithography (EBL) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching process. Our device shows efficient PBS operation at the telecom bands with an extinction ratio over 26 dB and 13 dB for fundamental TE and TM modes, respectively. The device holds promise for efficient on-chip polarization division multiplexing and polarization manipulation, which would become an indispensable component in future LNTF PICs.

Abstract:A polarization beam splitter (PBS) is proposed based on an asymmetric directional coupler consisting of a silicon nitride assisted waveguide and two ridge waveguides on a lithium niobate on insulator. Due to the silicon nitride buffer layer, the phase-matching condition is satisfied for TE polarization, whereas TM polarization has a significant phase mismatch by choosing reasonable widths of three waveguides. A 112.2-mu m-long PBS is designed, and the gap width is chosen to be 300 nm to make it easy to fabricate. Numerical simulations show that the designed PBS has a broad bandwidth (> 80 nm) for an extinction ratio of > 15 dB and an ultralow insertion loss (< 0.35 dB). Abstract:A switchable polarization beam splitter utilizing GST-on-silicon waveguides is introduced and comprehensively investigated in this paper. Based on the phase matching and mode hybridization, structural parameters of the presented device are optimized by using the particle swarm optimization algorithm and finite difference time domain method, so that the output fundamental transverse-electric (TE0) and transverse-magnetic (TM0) modes can be switched by controlling the phase state of GST and the device exhibits broad bandwidth, low crosstalk, and high polarization extinction ratio. For the designed device with the amorphous GST, the crosstalk is lower than -23.40 dB and the polarization extinction ratio is larger than 21.35 dB over the C-band. In the case of the crystalline GST, within the C-band, the crosstalk of less than -27.37 dB and the polarization extinction ratio of greater than 21.37 dB are achieved.

Abstract:In this paper, theoretical modeling and numerical simulations of a high-performance polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on hetero-anisotropic metamaterials are proposed on the lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform. The hetero-anisotropic metamaterials constructed by sub-wavelength gratings (SWGs) can be regarded as effective anisotropy medium, which exhibits strong birefringence without breaking the geometrical symmetry, contributing to the formation of PBS. Rather than the principle of PBS based on beat-length difference of transverse electric (TE) polarization and transverse magnetic (TM) polarization, the device can realize polarization beam splitting in single beat length, and the footprint of the proposed PBS can be reduced to 8 µm × 160 µm (with S-bend). The simulation results show that the bandwidth is 185 nm (1450∼1634 nm) for TE polarization while the bandwidth is 85 nm (1490∼1575 nm) for TM polarization when the polarization extinction ratio is >20 dB. Furthermore, the insertion loss is less than 1 dB in the range of 1450 to 1650 nm, for both TE and TM polarization. Additionally, the proposed device proves strong robustness of the fabrication tolerance.

Abstract:Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) is a promising platform for high-speed photonic integrated circuits (PICs) that are used for communication systems due to the excellent electro-optic properties of lithium niobate (LN). In such circuits, the high-speed electro-optical modulators and switches need to be integrated with passive circuit components that are used for routing the optical signals. Polarization beam splitters (PBSs) are one of the fundamental passive circuit components for high-speed PICs that can be used to (de)multiplex two orthogonal polarization optical modes, enabling on-chip polarization division multiplexing (PDM) systems, which are suitable for enhancing the data capacity of PICs. In this Letter, we design and experimentally demonstrate a high-performance PBS constructed by a photonic crystal (PC)-assisted multimode interference (MMI) coupler. The measured polarization extinction ratio (ER) of the fabricated device is 15 dB in the wavelength range from 1525 to 1565 nm, which makes them suitable for the high-speed and large data capacity PICs required for future communication systems.
Compact and broadband polarization beam splitter based on a bridged hybrid plasmonic waveguide coupler on a thin-film lithium niobate

Abstract:We propose a compact and broadband polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on a thin-film lithium niobate. The hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPW) is used as a bridge in a three-waveguide coupler to achieve large birefringence. A degree of phase-matching is introduced for optimization. The proposed PBS exhibits a 125-nm bandwidth (1495-1620 nm) of polarization extinction ratio (PER) over 20 dB or an 85-nm bandwidth (1515-1600 nm) of PER over 25 dB, with a device length of only 81 μm. An ultra-low insertion loss of 0.04 dB is achieved around the wavelength of 1550 nm. In addition, the proposed device exhibits high robustness of the fabrication tolerance.

Abstract:We report on a novel waveguide-based polarization beam splitter (PBS) fabricated by femtosecond (fs) laser in lithium niobate (LiNbO3) crystals. This monolithic PBS is composed of tailored waveguide configurations with different guiding properties in which linearly polarized light along extraordinary refractive index (n(e)) and ordinary index (n(o)) can be well separated. At the wavelength of 1064 nm, polarization extinction ratio (PER) can reach to 16.60 dB and 16.18 dB for n(e) and n(o) polarizations, with insertion loss (IL) of 3.86 dB and 4.15 dB respectively. Our work may pave a new way for designing high-performance PBS and creating compact polarization conversion systems in integrated photonics and quantum photonics.

Abstract:On-chip polarization management components play a critical role in tackling polarization dependence in the lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform. In this work, we proposed a reconfigurable TE-pass polarizer based on optical phase change material (GST) and the LNOI wafer. The key region is formed by a hybrid GST-S i 3 N 4 layer symmetrically deposited atop the centerline of the LNOI waveguide along the propagation direction where the GST is sandwiched in the middle of the S i 3 N 4 layer. Whether the polarizer will take effect depends on the phase states of the GST layer and the graphene and aluminum oxide layers are coated atop the G S T-S i 3 N 4 layer as the microheater to control the conversion of phase states. The proposed device length is 7.5 µm with an insertion loss (IL)=0.22 dB and extinction ratio (ER)=32.8 dB at the wavelength of 1550 nm. Moreover, it also has a high ER (>25d B) and a low IL (<0.5d B) in the operating bandwidth of 200 nm. Such a high-performance TE-pass polarizer paves a new way for applications of photonics integrated circuits.

Abstract:Using a lithium niobate(LN) material, we propose a broadband polarization beam splitter(PBS) with high efficiency by employing a negative refractive photonic crystal(PhC) wedge slab with an angle of 60°. It can split the incident light into two parts at about 90° with TE and TM polarizations. The transmissions of polarized light for an LN-based PBS are more than 80% with a broad angle and wavelength bandwidth of 8° and 70 nm at1.55 ^rni, while with a Si-based PhC, no PBS with high efficiency can be realized for the relatively lower transmission of TM output light.

Abstract:A novel controllable polarization beam splitter is designed by using the modified Y-branch waveguide structure, in which the nematic liquid crystal is introduced. The optical performance of the polarization beam splitter is numerically investigated by the beam propagation method. The results show that not only can high extinction ratio and low optical loss be easily achieved, but also the output ports for TE and TM modes can be dynamically interchangeable in our configuration. Moreover, the proposed polarization beam splitter has little wavelength dependence and large fabrication tolerance. This firstly proposed device provides a unique approach for the manipulation of polarization splitting, which has wide potential application in the photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:The polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on the directional coupler is numerically investigated to operate transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) modes including high-order modes. Based on the phase-matching condition, all TM-polarization modes are switched from the bus waveguide to the adjacent waveguide without changing the spatial profile of the electric field and mode order while all TE-polarization modes go along the bus waveguide without significant coupling. The results show a low cross talk characteristic (>20 dB at 1.55 mu m) and big fabrication tolerance (delta w = +/- 20 nm). Abstract:In this study, one-dimensional grating coupler on single-crystal lithium niobate thin film (lithium niobate on insulator, LNOI) that also served as a polarization splitter was designed. The coupler could separate both orthogonal polarization states into two opposite directions while coupled light from a standard single-mode fiber to a waveguide on LNOI at the same time. Using segmented and apodized designing, the peak coupling efficiencies (CEs) around telecommunication wavelength 1550 nm for fundamental TE and TM modes of −2.82 dB and −2.83 dB, respectively, were achieved. The CEs could be optimized to −1.97 dB and −1.8 dB when a metal layer was added below the silicon dioxide layer.

Abstract:In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a broadband polarization splitter-rotator (PSR) on the lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI). With multiple sequentially connected adiabatic tapers for waveguide mode conversion and directional coupling, the PSR shows a 160-nm bandwidth covering the C and L bands, an insertion loss of less than 2 dB, and an extinction ratio of more than 11 dB. Benefiting from the conversion-enhanced adiabatic tapers, the broadband device has a short length of 405 µm. Further optimization is performed to reduce the device length to 271 µm and comparable performances are achieved, demonstrating the feasibility of higher device compactness. The proposed design and principle can contribute to high-performance polarization management for integrated lithium niobate photonics.
Electro-optically modulated polarization mode conversion in lithium niobate ridge waveguides

Abstract:Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) waveguides, as an emerging technology, have proven to offer a promising platform for integrated optics, due to their strong optical confinement comparable to silicon on insulator (SOI) waveguides, while possessing the versatile properties of lithium niobate, such as high electro-optic coefficients. In this paper, we show that mode hybridization, a phenomenon widely found in vertically asymmetric waveguides, can be efficiently modulated in an LNOI ridge waveguide by electro-optic effect, leading to a polarization mode converter with 97% efficiency. Moreover, the proposed device does not require tapering or periodic poling, thereby greatly simplifying the fabrication process. It can also be actively switched by external fields. Such a platform facilitates technological progress of photonics circuits and sensors.
