Abstract:Gia's battle with SCD began at birth, diagnosed through newborn screening—a moment that altered the course of our lives forever. Her father and I, both carriers of the sickle cell trait, were unaware of the risk until Gia's diagnosis. Her older sister, with a different paternal lineage, was spared from this condition, underscoring the unpredictable nature of genetic inheritance. Initially, Gia's life seemed unaffected by SCD, but at around 1.5 years old, the reality of her condition unveiled itself through recurrent episodes of pneumonia and acute chest syndrome, necessitating multiple ICU stays and blood transfusions. By the age of 8, she had endured over ten transfusions. Her first pain crisis at three, triggered by a seemingly innocent day at the park, was a harrowing experience, illustrating the disease's unpredictable cruelty.
