Abstract:Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) is a diagnosis that forever altered my life and more importantly the life of my daughter. I was so excited to go to my anatomy scan with my husband. We could not wait to see our beautiful little girl, to hear how amazing she was doing and to leave with some new pictures to share with family and friends. That is what we were expecting but so very far from what we got. Like most families, I knew something was wrong the moment our doctor came in. She told us she suspected our daughter had congenital diaphragmatic hernia, however, we would need to see a specialist at the Chicago Institute of Fetal Health to confirm. She hugged me and until that moment I did not realize I had been holding my breath. I buried my head in her shoulder and just cried. This was before the research. This was before the additional scans and information. This was the feeling of profound loss that comes when you are told your dreams of a happy, healthy pregnancy and a happy, healthy baby are no longer a possibility. We lost so much that day because of three tiny letters. We went to that appointment looking for sweet pictures of our little girl. We left with so much more. This was one of those pivotal moments in life where you know everything has changed.
