Abstract:This document provides a summary of the discussions during the recent joint QCD Town Meeting at Temple University of the status of and future plans for the research program of the relativistic heavy-ion community. A list of compelling questions is formulated, and a number of recommendations outlining the greatest research opportunities and detailing the research priorities of the heavy-ion community, voted on and unanimously approved at the Town Meeting, are presented. They are supported by a broad discussion of the underlying physics and its relation to other subfields. Areas of overlapping interests with the "QCD and Hadron Structure" ("cold QCD") subcommunity, in particular the recommendation for the future construction of an Electron-Ion Collider, are emphasized. The agenda of activities of the "hot QCD" subcommunity at the Town Meeting is attached.

Abstract:This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. Section 7 describes the national need for nuclear data science and the relevance to QCD research.

Abstract:The past decade has seen huge advances in experimental measurements made in heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and more recently at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These new data, in combination with theoretical advances from calculations made in a variety of frameworks, have led to a broad and deep knowledge of the properties of thermal QCD matter. Increasingly quantitative descriptions of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in these collisions have established that the QGP is a strongly coupled liquid with the lowest value of specific viscosity ever measured. However, much remains to be learned about the precise nature of the initial state from which this liquid forms, how its properties vary across its phase diagram and how, at a microscopic level, the collective properties of this liquid emerge from the interactions among the individual quarks and gluons that must be visible if the liquid is probed with sufficiently high resolution. This white paper, prepared by the Hot QCD Writing Group as part of the U.S. Long Range Plan for Nuclear Physics, reviews the recent progress in the field of hot QCD and outlines the scientific opportunities in the next decade for resolving the outstanding issues in the field.

Abstract:Hot QCD physics studies the nuclear strong force under extreme temperature and densities. Experimentally these conditions are achieved via high-energy collisions of heavy ions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the past decade, a unique and substantial suite of data was collected at RHIC and the LHC, probing hydrodynamics at the nucleon scale, the temperature dependence of the transport properties of quark-gluon plasma, the phase diagram of nuclear matter, the interaction of quarks and gluons at different scales and much more. This document, as part of the 2023 nuclear science long range planning process, was written to review the progress in hot QCD since the 2015 Long Range Plan for Nuclear Science, as well as highlight the realization of previous recommendations, and present opportunities for the next decade, building on the accomplishments and investments made in theoretical developments and the construction of new detectors. Furthermore, this document provides additional context to support the recommendations voted on at the Joint Hot and Cold QCD Town Hall Meeting, which are reported in a separate document.

Abstract:The Les Houches Workshop on Physics at TeV Colliders took place from June 8-18, 1999. One of the three working groups at Les Houches concentrated on QCD issues, both at the Tevatron Collider and at the LHC. Besides the interest in QCD in its own right, QCD dynamics plays an important role in the production mechanisms for any new physics process that might be observed at either collider, as well as any processes that may form backgrounds to the new physics. This writeup serves both as a pedagogical overview of QCD as well as an update on the current status of the field.

Abstract:We extend our proposal that major universality classes of hadronic matter can be understood, and in favorable cases calculated, directly in the microscopic quark variables, to allow for a splitting between strange and light quark masses. A surprisingly simple but apparently viable picture emerges, featuring essentially three phases, distinguished by whether strangeness is conserved (standard nuclear matter), conserved modulo 2 (hypernuclear matter), or locked to color (color flavor locking). These are separated by sharp phase transitions. There is also, potentially, a quark phase matching hadronic {ital K} condensation. The smallness of the secondary gap in two-flavor color superconductivity corresponds to the disparity between the primary dynamical energy scales of QCD and the much smaller energy scales of nuclear physics. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract:Since it started in 2005, the subfield of studying quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phase structure has developed very rapidly. This is partly because the discovery of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP), at the vanishing net-baryon densities, at RHIC and LHC and partly due to the successful of the RHIC beam energy scan program. During November 7–11, 2011, the 7th International Workshop on Critical Point and Onset of Deconfinement (CPOD2011) was held at the College of Physical Science and Technology, Central China Normal University. More than two hundred participants attend this workshop and about eighty of them are graduate students or fresh postdocs. The focus of the workshop was the phase structure of the QCD matter. Recent progresses on experimental results of energy dependence of particle production, correlations and fluctuations, and on theoretical results from the Lattice QCD calculations and other other QCD model results were presented at the workshop. As the result of the discussion, this special issue of the Central European Journal of Physics collects more than forty papers focusing on the progress in the research of QCD

Abstract:The Quark Matter 2004 conference was held on 11--17 January 2004 at the Oakland Marriott City Center Hotel in downtown Oakland, California. It was the 17th International Conference on Ultra-Relativistic Nucleus--Nucleus Collisions, held for the third time in California. The conference was preceded by two well-attended meetings: a pre-conference symposium for young scientists and a workshop for local high school teachers. Nearly 700 physicists attended the conference to discuss the latest experimental results from RHIC and from the SPS and their theoretical implications. There were 8 plenary sessions, 12 parallel sessions and a poster session. A total of 333 abstracts were submitted to the conference out of which 90 were selected for oral presentation; the others were assigned to the poster session.

Abstract:After briefly reviewing work I've done recently with Krishna Rajagopal on the nature of the equilibrium phase transition in QCD at finite temperature and zero baryon number and on the possibility of forming misaligned vacuum by a quench, I discuss — also briefly — two new items. These are extension of the arguments concerning the order of the transition to to 2+1 dimensions, relating in this case gauge to conformal field theories, that could be explored in numerical experiments; and the energy budget at the chiral transition and its relevance to the nature of the transition and to quenching. The bulk of the material in the talk as delivered was taken from two papers written with Krishna Rajagopal. Here I will only give a telegraphic summary of those papers [1, 2] in Sections 1 and 2. Sections 3-4 are devoted to the new items mentioned in the Abstract.

Abstract:QCD thermodynamics is studied using a model which combines Polyakov loop dynamics with spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and its restoration (the PNJL model). The input is fixed entirely by pure-gauge lattice QCD results and by pion properties in vacuum. Successful comparisons with results from thermal lattice QCD are achieved, including extrapolations to finite quark chemical potential. The phase diagram and selected susceptibilities for two quark flavors are investigated with inclusion of diquark degrees of freedom.

Abstract:This White Paper presents the science case of an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), focused on the structure and interactions of gluon-dominated matter, with the intent to articulate it to the broader nuclear science community. It was commissioned by the managements of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) with the objective of presenting a summary of scientific opportunities and goals of the EIC as a follow-up to the 2007 NSAC Long Range plan. This document is a culmination of a community-wide effort in nuclear science following a series of workshops on EIC physics over the past decades and, in particular, the focused ten-week program on “Gluons and quark sea at high energies” at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Fall 2010. It contains a brief description of a few golden physics measurements along with accelerator and detector concepts required to achieve them. It has been benefited profoundly from inputs by the users’ communities of BNL and JLab. This White Paper offers the promise to propel the QCD science program in the US, established with the CEBAF accelerator at JLab and the RHIC collider at BNL, to the next QCD frontier.

Abstract:In this paper the QCD phase diagram is obtained by the crossing of two effective models: the MIT bag based models are used to describe quark matter and QHD type models to describe hadronic matter, being the use of the former something new to this kind of approach and the latter used with improved parameterizations as compared with previous calculations. We use the Gibbs' conditions to establish the crossing points of the pressure in function of the chemical potential obtained in both phases. We first analyze two-flavour symmetric matter constrained to both the freeze-out and the liquid-gas phase transition at the hadronic phase. Later we analyse the results for $\beta$-stable and charge neutral stellar matter and compare two different prescriptions: one that assumes flavour conservation, so that the quark phase is completely determined from the hadronic phase, a prescription never applied to finite temperatures before, and the other based on the Maxwell construction, where the quark phase is also $\beta$-stable. At the end, we compute the latent heat to find a signature of the critical end point.

An Experiment Study on the Quark Matter Properties and QCD Phase Structure at RHIC

Abstract:In this paper, we review the recent results from relativistic heavy-ion collision experiments at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider-Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (RHIC-STAR), primarily focusing on collective flow; high moments of conserved quantities; and the production of light nuclei, heavy flavor and strange hadrons. The experiment discovered thermalized quark matter in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. With measurements from RHIC-STAR Beam Energy Scan Phase I, several observables indicate the Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) critical region exists below collision energy root s(NN) = 39 GeV. Finally, we discuss ongoing global facilities for beam energy scan experiments and the research direction of QCD phase structure.

Detector upgrades will further probe the properties of Quark Gluon Plasma. Future measurements with upgraded detectors will be presented. The discovery perspectives from future measurements will also be discussed.

QCD and Asymptotic Freedom: Perspectives and Prospects

Abstract:QCD is now a mature theory, and it is possible to begin to view its place in the conceptual universe of physics with an appropriate perspective. There is a certain irony in the achievements of QCD. For the problems which initially drove its development — specifically, the desire to understand in detail the force that holds atomic nuclei together, and later the desire to calculate the spectrum of hadrons and their interactions — only limited insight has been achieved. However, I shall argue that QCD is actually more special and important a theory than one had any right to anticipate. In many ways, the importance of the solution transcends that of the original motivating problems. After elaborating on these quasiphilosophical remarks, I discuss two current frontiers of physics that illustrate the continuing vitality of the ideas. The recent wealth of beautiful precision experiments measuring the parameters of the standard model have made it possible to consider the unification of couplings in unprecedented quantitative detail. One central result emerging from these developments is a tantalizing hint of virtual supersymmetry. The possibility of phase transitions in matter at temperatures of order ~102 MeV, governed by QCD dynamics, is of interest from several points of view. Besides having a certain intrinsic grandeur, the question “Does the nature of matter change qualitatively, as it is radically heated?” is important for cosmology, relevant to planned high-energy heavy-ion collision experiments, and provides a promising arena for numerical simulations of QCD. Recent numerical work seems to be consistent with expectations suggested by renormalization group analysis of the potential universality classes of the QCD chiral phase transition; specifically, that the transition is second-order for two species of massless quarks but first order otherwise. There is an interesting possibility of long-range correlations in heavy ion collisions due to the creation of large regions of the misaligned chiral condensate. Finally, at the end, there is a brief discussion on the relation between scaling violations and running of the coupling. Some statements made later in the conference seemed to indicate that the relationship between these concepts is commonly misunderstood, so I’m smuggling this bit in even though it wasn’t part of the original talk.
Exploring the QCD landscape with high-energy nuclear collisions

Abstract:Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phase diagram is usually plotted as temperature (T) versus the chemical potential associated with the conserved baryon number (\mu_{B}). Two fundamental properties of QCD, related to confinement and chiral symmetry, allows for two corresponding phase transitions when T and \mu_{B} are varied. Theoretically the phase diagram is explored through non-perturbative QCD calculations on lattice. The energy scale for the phase diagram (\Lambda_{QCD} ~ 200 MeV) is such that it can be explored experimentally by colliding nuclei at varying beam energies in the laboratory. In this paper we review some aspects of the QCD phase structure as explored through the experimental studies using high energy nuclear collisions. Specifically, we discuss three observations related to the formation of a strongly coupled plasma of quarks and gluons in the collisions, experimental search for the QCD critical point on the phase diagram and freeze-out properties of the hadronic phase.
