Abstract:Innovative cities are essential for the economic growth and development of countries. At the same time, however, social and environmental problems related to city growth can be serious threats to the full realisation of the socio-economic contribution that cities can make. In this paper it is argued that the notion of a ‘system of innovation’ is helpful in understanding the factors that shape the processes of innovation and that determine the extent to which problems related to city growth may be solved. It is also argued that it is in cities, especially big cities, that the power of innovation to promote economic growth and development will be tested and that, in this context, institutional innovation and political innovation as compared to technical innovation are of special importance.

Abstract:Abstract This paper critically reviews dominant approaches to the economics of innovation in contemporary developing societies, namely new institutional economics (NIE) and National Innovation Systems (NIS). Both traditions explain capitalist development in late-industrialising countries using underlying assumptions and logics of advanced industrialised societies with respect to transaction costs, path dependence, the nature and structure of institutions and economic history. At their core, both approaches proffer ideal-type institutions as an essentialist route to technological and productivity improvement akin to a staged theory of development. The NIS framework became dominant in scholarly and policy circles but has neglected the implication that the concept was developed at the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development during the emergence of first-stage neoliberalism. NIE has become an essential analytical toolkit of mainstream economists and international organisations promoting competitiveness in developing countries. Analyses of the economic performance of developing countries have thus diverged from structural perspectives on development, attributing instead lacklustre technological deepening to certain national features, institutional gaps or linkage failures. The paper exposes narrow assumptions and illustrates that the ‘transition costs’ that arise from new socio-institutional configurations during the development process induces firms and other actors to compete for rents. Conversely, power asymmetries, historical factors and constraining forces in the global capitalist system generate unevenness in productive forces and technological progress. The paper proposes a political economy of technological change that considers the structural, technical and socio-political interdependencies and tensions that underpin transformative policies to improve technological, coordination and collective capabilities in the economic system.

Abstract:In this article we argue that knowledge production in industrial settings does not follow neat schemata, such as the linear model or the Mode 1/Mode 2 dichotomy. Rather than moving from research to market via development, innovation and production, it is an iterative process where information and knowledge move back and forth between different actors and milieus. Engineering science is a many-sided practice carried out at different institutions and is largely driven by a need for continuous novelty. By means of a detailed historical case study of industrial R&D in the area of engine design we document how theoretical knowledge encountered on-the-spot observations, how well educated engineers met ordinary bus drivers and how engineering test procedures clashed with economic interests. Our story line is about ‘crossover’ processes, trial-and-error ‘research’, recursive development loops, and flexibly acting innovation networks.

Abstract:Purpose Over the last few decades, more emphasis has been placed on those innovations that can reconcile economic, social and environmental goals in order to achieve a “win-win-win” situation. This paper aims to systematise the scientific literature on Sustainable Innovation as a broad field in order to identify the most relevant scholars and their significant contributions as well as existing lines of research. Finally, future research directions are suggested. Design/methodology/approach A novel methodology, the Systematic Literature Network Analysis, has been applied. By using a dynamic approach to the traditional Systematic Literature Review, the present review investigates the creation, transfer, and development of knowledge throughout the epistemic community of Sustainable Innovation. Findings Starting from a sample of 1,108 articles, the critical assessment of the results detected five main themes: (1) “the role of Regulation, Market and Technology”; (2) “Eco-Innovation determinants and firm specific factors and the debate between corporate environmental performance and corporate financial performance”; (3) “Green innovation and internal and external drivers”; (4) “The strategic determinants of green (non-green) innovation”; (5) “The interplay between policy, regulations and the green innovation”. Practical implications From a practitioner's perspective, this study provides an objective view on the current internal, external drivers and strategic determinants of sustainability-oriented innovations and relevant studies that can guide managers in their decision-making processes and enhance sustainable innovation performance. Originality/value This study is a first attempt to unveil the evolution of knowledge in the field of sustainable innovation by utilizing bibliometric tools.

Abstract:There is a lot of literature on systems of nation,region and industries,but we have litter understanding of relationships between the various systems of innovation research.This paper strongly argues that without good knowledge about the relationships between the innovation systems,it is no possible to fully understand the operating function of innovation system,and difficult to guide the development of innovation policy as well.After reviewing and summarizing the theories of innovation system,especially national innovation system,regional innovation system and industrial innovation system,we discuss their relationships and point out that to build a multi-level framework integrating the micro(enterprises),mecro(industry and region) and macro(nation and global) –scale innovation elements,and to study interaction between elements at the same geographic scales.

Abstract:Selective case studies of the post–World War II economy have given rise to claims that national innovation systems, or dirigiste linkages between the state, universities, and industry, are required for technological change and economic growth. The long-run patterns of innovation in the leading nations of Britain, France, and the United States suggest otherwise. Administered systems, where key economic decisions were made by elites, the state, and other privileged groups, typically were associated with monopsonies and the misallocation of resources and talent. By contrast, the American experience highlights the central role of markets in ideas and decentralized incentives for innovation, in concert with flexible open-access adjacent institutions, in promoting useful knowledge and sustained technological progress.

Abstract:This article revisits the concept of National Systems of already developped in the journal in Winter 1992 with coauthors Michael Crow and Saviotti. The question is why economic agents and groups of differ in the way they conduct technological change, despite the fact socio-economical systems are singly open and that everybody in world can benefit from the access to science and technology. consider that we can answer question only through the shift individuals or collective agents institutions. The global interdépendance of National Systems of Innovation provide an insight view of specificity of apprenticeship of creation and diffusion of technology. The concept explain why the and much heralded movement of globalization is still of a relative importance compared to the domestic specific innovativeness capacities.A travers une synthèse critique des différentes approches de «l 'entrepreneurship» dans le contexte de leur implication sur l'économie du développement, nous montrons que les approches traitant l'entrepreneur comme un être humain extraordinaire semblent moins pertinentes pour expliquer l'émergence de l'entrepreneur dans les pays en voie de développement. Aussi dans ces pays, cette émergence est en général un phénomène collectif qui dépend des conditions socio-culturelles et macroéconomiques. Enfin, pour encourager l'émergence de l'entrepreneur et pour orienter son talent dans les activités productives plutôt que dans les recherches des rentes, une bonne définition des règles du jeu, c'est-à- dire des institutions semble capitale.

Abstract:This review explores the rising research field of sustainable development in combination with innovation. The basis to reach sustainable development is innovation, which plays a role on all dimensions, be it economically, socially, or environmentally. In this review, science mapping techniques were employed in order to asses 1690 journal articles extracted from the SCOPUS database concerned with innovation in sustainable development (ISD). The main objective of the review is to reveal the size, growth trajectory, and geographic distribution of the ISD literature. Furthermore, the aim is to assess the key publishing journals, authors, and documents as well as to uncover the intellectual structure and topical foci of the research domain. The review acknowledges a reasonable body of knowledge spanning nearly three decades. A result of this review is that the sustainable development literature emerged from the environmental research field and that the topical foci of the domain is closely aligned with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. This review is a first attempt to systematically analyze the literature on innovation in sustainable development (ISD) by applying science mapping techniques such as bibliometric analysis. It shall give guidance for future research and demonstrate the practical implications.

Abstract:The need to formulate a new approach to a more effective analysis of the development of technological innovations has led to the creation of a number of concepts. One of them is the concept of technological innovation system (TIS). TIS is a systematic approach for understanding the development, diffusion and use of new technologies. The concept is widely used in the study of technological innovation in developed countries, becoming increasingly popular in developing countries. In Russia, this concept did not receive such wide development as abroad. This paper presents a detailed description of the basic conceptual milestones of TIS, shows the fundamental differences of this concept from other innovative concepts, its advantages and disadvantages. Based on the results of the analysis, it has been concluded that, despite the existing shortcomings, TIS provides a comprehensive analysis of the development of technologies within the framework of existing socio-political, economic and organizational factors. TIS promotes understanding of the mechanism of emergence and growth of new technologies and industries, focusing on the analysis of barriers and driving forces of this process. The results of TIS analysis are traditionally used as a basis for developing policy recommendations.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review the emerging research field of open innovation and identify where the field is going as well as suggest future fields of research. Design/methodology/approach All academic papers and books published until November 2007 under the label of open innovation were systematically reviewed. Also, nine key researchers were asked to contribute with their opinions on the research frontier. Findings A number of key themes in the research were identified, and conclusions on the underlying structure were drawn. This reveals that there is a tendency towards a broader definition and application of the term, a growing critical perspective, and a concentration on theory development and managerial implications. Research limitations/implications The paper suggests that the locus of the innovation process and the extent of collaboration should be used as two dimensions in a model to further understanding of how open innovation develops. These dimensions have an important impact on both the human and the organizational side of innovation, areas that are highlighted as important fields for further research. Originality/value Despite the interest in the open innovation topic, a comprehensive review of the academic publications in the area does not seem to exist. The review and the conclusions drawn support the understanding of the growing field.

Abstract:This article mainly explores the new trend of innovation management: the construct of theory for inclusive innovation system.After a comprehensive review of the basic concepts in literature on inclusive innovation,this article proposes the concept of inclusive innovation which enables all groups including the poor participate in economic growth,make contribution and share the fruits of growth reasonably through eliminating the poverty of the rights of the poor and social exclusion they face through innovation to achieve equality of opportunity and equitable participation during the process.This article further articulates the differentiation between inclusive innovation and traditional innovation mode,and discusses the special implication inclusive innovation may bring during the new round of social development.Then it proposes three theoretical mechanisms on how inclusive innovation promotes inclusive development,namely,reducing barriers,upgrading ability and changing institutions through innovation in the perspective of social exclusion.Finally,it analyzes potential theoretical development within restrict formation and restrict solution in the perspective of theory constructing.

Abstract:This paper presents insights and action proposals to better harness technological innovation for sustainable development. We begin with three key insights from scholarship and practice. First, technological innovation processes do not follow a set sequence but rather emerge from complex adaptive systems involving many actors and institutions operating simultaneously from local to global scales. Barriers arise at all stages of innovation, from the invention of a technology through its selection, production, adaptation, adoption, and retirement. Second, learning from past efforts to mobilize innovation for sustainable development can be greatly improved through structured cross-sectoral comparisons that recognize the socio-technical nature of innovation systems. Third, current institutions (rules, norms, and incentives) shaping technological innovation are often not aligned toward the goals of sustainable development because impoverished, marginalized, and unborn populations too often lack the economic and political power to shape innovation systems to meet their needs. However, these institutions can be reformed, and many actors have the power to do so through research, advocacy, training, convening, policymaking, and financing. We conclude with three practice-oriented recommendations to further realize the potential of innovation for sustainable development: ( i ) channels for regularized learning across domains of practice should be established; ( ii ) measures that systematically take into account the interests of underserved populations throughout the innovation process should be developed; and ( iii ) institutions should be reformed to reorient innovation systems toward sustainable development and ensure that all innovation stages and scales are considered at the outset.

Abstract:The article considers the main patterns and signs of economic growth. One of the most important sources of economic growth is a breakthrough in the evolutionary development of science, which creates the potential for the development of technology. Modern models of economic growth should include an innovative component. In the theory of economic growth, technological change is considered as one of the key factors influencing productivity, and therefore the rate of economic growth in general. The main patterns associated with economic growth are provided by increasing the productivity of capital and labor, the causes of which are technological change, innovation. The main signs of economic growth are: technical progress; institutional, behavioral and ideological changes that contribute to the realization of the growth potential inherent in new technology; constant growth of the national product. It was found that the innovative breakthrough is based on scientific and technological progress, and science, education, technology, new knowledge have become the engine of economic growth in all developed countries. The stages of evolutionary development of research and development are considered, in particular, the first stage is associated with the emergence of laboratories, the first R&D units in large companies; the second stage is associated with the rapid development of science-intensive scientific disciplines; the third stage is based on the marketing approach and the concept of strategic planning; within the fourth stage, customer needs and technical capabilities are being developed simultaneously. The systematization of innovations is analyzed. The greatest importance was given to such a feature as the degree of radical innovation. On this basis, you can systematize innovations in different ways: radical and modifying; epochal, which occur every few centuries and radically change the face of society; subversive and supportive. The latter approach is the most adequate from the point of view of business: what to beware of business and how to behave in the case of an innovation.

Abstract:This paper argues that less developed countries (LDCs) need twin national systems of innovation: systems with one, ‘upper’ level or sub-system to engage with advanced technology and develop industries which use it; and (cooperating with the upper level) a ‘lower’ level to help to improve the economy’s existing, traditional technology. The focus is on the lower level. The process there should involve the development and use of intermediate technologies. These are much better suited to the LDC’s factor endowment, and maximise opportunities for learning by doing. Most LDCs lack such a lower level, and lose much from this; Brazil is an example. Japan and Taiwan developed twin NSIs and gained accordingly, until success caused the levels to merge. 19th Century Denmark and Malaysia are other cases in point recently. Mainland China failed to build on its 1950s beginnings and the lower level of its NSI is now weak.

Abstract:<p>The circular economy emerged as an alternative model to the linear system, which now appears to be reaching its physical limitations. To transition to a circular economy, companies must not only be aware of but also engage in more sustainable practices. For such a transition, companies must rethink and innovate their business models and the ways they propose value to their clients while simultaneously considering environmental and social facets. This systematic literature review sought to map out from the company perspective the key topics interrelated with innovation and the circular economy, describing the internal and external factors to consider in such transition processes. Key lines of research were identified, and suggestions for future research and for facilitating movement toward a circular economy are provided. This work contributes to deepening the literature by identifying the priority areas concerning the circular economy and encouraging future research that meets international standards of excellence.</p>

Abstract:This article argues that innovation in and from emerging economies is largely shaped by the challenges of sustained catching-up with the advanced economies. Just as firms and industries are constantly seeking to upgrade their technological and organizational capabilities, so too are their societies reconfiguring their institutions and networks to improve their knowledge resources. Such a co-evolutionary process requires IB scholars to draw on interdisciplinary work from the innovation and development literature in order to reconsider the key drivers of innovation at multiple levels within these economies. Innovation is not just limited to technological activities but includes organizational and transactional improvements, and is largely a process of recombination of local and imported knowledge, shared through multiple forms of collaboration. This can redefine the FSAs of local and foreign firms, often shaped by the strategies of domestic public and private actors. Simultaneously, policymakers need to develop the appropriate institutions needed to underpin R&D, training, standards, and knowledge coordination. MNEs play unique roles as instigators of innovation, as conduits for new knowledge, and as beneficiaries themselves, via their own recombination capabilities.

Abstract:The evolutionary turn in economic geography has shed new light on historically contingent regional preconditions for innovation and economic growth, which has the potential of improving the analytical input to regional innovation system approaches. Evolutionary economic geography has renewed interest in and sharpened the conceptual lens on firms, their organizational routines and knowledge bases as well as the long-term, self-sustaining development dynamics, which may arise from their co-location in regions. At the same, it has been pointed out that an overreliance on imported evolutionary frameworks (such as Nelson and Winter’s theory of the firm and their lack of an explicit social ontology) may lead to a ‘theoretical relegation’ of institutions and agency. It seems also that the policy agenda of evolutionary economic geography has remained largely implicit. In comparison, regional innovation system has been developed in closer interaction with policy-makers and has been used widely as a framework for the design, implementation and evaluation of regional innovation policies in a variety of countries and regions. The purpose of this article is to critically investigate what evolutionary economic geography brings to the policy table, and how this potentially can advance a regional innovation systems approach. The article specially focuses on how this may improve the capacity of policies based on a regional innovation system framework to support new path development (i.e. path renewal and path creation) to secure regional resilience.
