Abstract:2 - Ethoxynaphthalene was synthesized form 2 - naphthol and ethanol, with p - methyl - benzene monosulfonic acid as catalyst in cyclohexane. The best reaction terms are as follows: 2 - naphthol : ethanol =1; 3.the reflux respond 7 h, and accept the rate to 98.7% .tmp35-37°C . The yield is 98.7% .

Abstract:The selectivity limitations of tert-butylation of naphthalene for obtaining 2,6-di-tert-butylnaphathalene (DTBN) was overcame (2,6-/2,7-DTBN>30) over fine-tuned mordenite. With citric acid (CA) and zirconium modification, the synergistic effect of the alkylation catalyst was promoted and the ratio of 2.6-/2,7-DTBN increased after controlling the reaction conditions. Only requires 5.0 equivalents of solvent, 3.0 equivalents of tert-butanol and 20 wt% of catalyst dosage, the ratio of 2,6-DTBN/2,7-DTBN can reach to 49, overcoming the selectivity barriers in naphthalene alkylation reaction. Present study reveals that high 2,6-selectivity can be realized with the optimized acidity, enhanced synergistic effect and fine-tuned zeolite structures.

Abstract:The liquid-phase catalytic oxidation of 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene (2,6-DMN) to 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (2,6-NDA) were carried out over Co/Mn/Br catalysts in acetic acid solvent. Considering the complex free-radical oxidation mechanism of 2,6-DMN, detailed reaction pathways for the oxidation of 2,6-DMN to the main 2,6-NDA product and byproducts were elucidated. Then, a detailed fractional kinetic model was proposed to describe the liquid-phase oxidation of 2,6-DMN to 2,6-NDA with side reactions involved. Furthermore, the kinetic model parameters were determined by a nonlinear optimization method, minimizing the difference between the experimental data and calculated values. Several key factors such as substrate concentration, reaction temperature and catalyst concentration, influencing the reaction rate were investigated systematically. Finally, semicontinuous experiments were carried out at different reactant feed rates and temperatures to evaluate the reliability of the derived fractional kinetic model. The determined fractional kinetic model can provide fundamental data for the industrial process optimization and scale-up of 2,6-DMN oxidation to 2,6-NDA.

Abstract:2,6-Dimethylnaphthalene (2,6-DMN) is a crucial intermediate in the synthesis of poly(ethylene naphthalate), a heat-resistant insulating material. The key to synthesizing 2,6-DMN is the development of highly active catalysts, which still remains challenging. Herein, bare SiO2 and a series of Al-modified SiO2 catalysts (denoted as Al-SiO2) were successfully synthesized through a hydrothermal method using sodium metaaluminate as the Al source. The prepared catalysts were used for catalytic alkylation of naphthalene, and it was found that the Al-doped SiO2 exhibited better catalytic activity than bare SiO2. The main reason is ascribed to the increased acid sites for Br & ouml;nsted and Lewis acids with the incorporation of Al. Among the Al-modified SiO2 samples, the amount of weak and total acidities was the highest for the 30Al-SiO2 sample. In addition, the reaction conditions over this prepared catalyst were studied and optimized. The results showed that it exhibited the highest activity when the temperature was 300 degrees C and the weight hourly space velocity was 1 h(-1). Furthermore, density functional theory calculations showed that the doping of Al into SiO2 enhanced the adsorption of methanol, resulting in a faster rate of formation of methoxylated material in the first step. Besides, methylation at the 6 position was slightly preferred compared to that at the 7 position, in line with the experimental results.

Abstract:A procedure for synthesis of 2-methoxyphenothiazine (1) has been developed, starting from resorcinol and aniline by condensation, following methylation and cyclization. p-Toluenesulfonic acid and polysubstituted aromatics were employed as the catalyst of condensation and the solvent of cyclization, respectively, to improve the yield. The use of parallel experiments, statistical experimental design, and multivariate modeling made the total yield of the procedure as high as 74.2%. J. Heterocyclic Chem., (2012).

Abstract:Improved synthesis of 4-benzylidene-2,6-di-tert-butylcyclohexa-2,5-dienone has been developed. The dropwise addition of secondary amines was shown to reduce the dosages of amines drastically. In optimized conditions, the dosages of the catalysts were only 0.3–0.5 M of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol. Removing the water generated in the step of Mannich base formation was found to hugely accelerate the whole reaction and improve the product yield. The catalytic activity of several annular secondary amines including morpholine and piperidine in this reaction has been researched. Most of the amines led to good yields. Using this method, 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol reacted with a wide range of aromatic aldehydes to produce nine diverse 4-benzylidene-2,6-di-tert-butylcyclohexa-2,5-dienone derivatives of up to 75 % yield.

Abstract:1-Chloro-2,5-dimethoxybenzene was prepared from p-benzoquinone through chlorination and methylation with total yield of 78%. p-Benzoquinone was firstly converted catalytically to 1-chloro-2,5-dihydroxybenzene in the binary system of dichloroethane and hydrochloric acid at 35℃ with yield of 89%, then the final product was synthesized by methylation of obtained 1-chloro-2,5-dihydroxybenzene with dimethyl sulfate in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The intermediate 1-chloro-2,5-dihydroxybenzene and the obtained title compound 1-chloro-2,5-dimethoxybenzene were characterized by IR and GC-MS respectively. The results showed that their chemical structures were correct and the purity of title compound was over 98%.

Abstract:2, 4-Dimethoxybenzaldehyde was prepared using 1, 3-dimethoxybenzene as raw material through Vilsmeier formylation with DMF directly. The compound was characterized by IR and NMR as a qualified product. Under the optimal conditions the product obtained from the orthogonal experiments could be given in 94.2% yield with purity of 98.64%, after purification the purity of final compound could be reached 99.6%.

Abstract:2-Methyl-6-acyl naphthalene is the precursor of polyester PEN.By the two Louis acid catalyst including ferric chloride and zinc chloride,the influence of the reaction time and reaction temperature on catalytic characteristics of 2-methylnaphthalene acidylation were discussed.The experimental results show that chloride-ferric chloride has better catalytic effect and the yield of production is 84% at 25 ℃ and 5 hours.When the temperature is too high,it leads to a large number of by-products,and decreases the production rate.Moreover,the reaction time has little influence on the selectivity of products.According to the experimental results,the appropriate operating conditions of synthesis target product were obtained.

Abstract:2-Bromo-3-methyl-1,4-dimethoxynaphthalene,an im-portant intermediate of menaquinone,was synthesized through three-step process employing 2-methyl-1,4-naphtho-quinone as the starting material.The first catalytical hydrogenation with pal-ladium/activated carbon as the catalyst gave a 98.8% yield.Forthe second step,2-methyl-1,4-naphthohydroquinone reacted with dimethyl sulfate in aqueous alkali,95.1% yield was realized.The target product was obtained through the reaction between 2-methyl-1,4-dimethoxynaphthalene and bromine with 90.1% yield.The overall yield reached 84.6%.

Abstract:The MeOTf/KI-catalyzed synthesis of 2-arylnaphthalene derivatives from aryl ethylene oxides in alcohol under ambient conditions is described. The present protocol has a higher atom efficiency and wider substrate applicability with excellent yields. The reaction proceeded using the aryl ethylene oxides to give 2-arylnaphthalenes either in homo-coupling or in cross-coupling. The reaction could also be carried out at the gram scale in minutes.

Abstract:A novel carbon-based strong acid catalyst, methylnaphthalenesulfonic acid - formaldehyde condensate, has been synthesized successfully. The catalytic activity for acetalization and ketalization at room temperature under solvent-free condition was investigated. The results showed that the novel catalyst was very efficient for the reaction. Also the novel heterogeneous catalyst owned the advantages of high activity, wide applicability, strikingly simple work-up procedure, non-pollution, stability and reusability, which made the catalyst hold great potential for the "green process".

Abstract:Condensations of benzene or toluene, xylene and paraformaldehyde to diphenylmethane (DPM) or its derivatives were performed using acidic ionic liquids Et3NHCl–AlCl3, Et3NHCl–FeCl3, Et3NHCl–ZnCl2, Et3NHCl–CuCl2, Et3NHCl–CuCl, Et3NHCl–SnCl2 as catalysts. The catalytic activity of Et3NHCl–AlCl3 proved to be superior to that of other catalysts for the condensation of benzene and paraformaldehyde, giving 92.4% conversion of HCHO and 76.1% selectivity to diphenylmethane at 80 °C and atmospheric pressure. The effect of various reaction conditions on the reaction and reaction kinetics of DPM synthesis were explored.

Abstract:Homogeneous polymerization of p-diethynylbenzene initiated by nickel acetylide Ni(C equivalent to CC6H4C equivalent to CH)(2)(PPh3)(2) has been investigated in terms of different solvents, addition agents, atmosphere gases, catalyst concentrations, monomer concentrations and polymerization temperatures. The yield and catalytic efficiency approach 88% and 11.1 kg polymer/mol Ni, respectively, under the optimum conditions: [cat] = 0.01 mol/L, [M] = 1.0 mol/L, NEt3/cat (mol ratio) = 3 similar to5, 1,4-dioxane/toluene (volume ratio) = 1 and T = 25 degreesC for 5 h. The polymerization rate equation can be expressed as R-p = k(p)[M][cat](2), where k(p)= 0.47 L-2 . mol(-2) S-1 (25 degreesC). The overall polymerization activation energy was found to be 203 kJ . mol(-1). Poly(p-diethynylbenzene) so obtained is soluble in THF, CHCl3 and toluene with weight-average molecular weights as high as 27, 100 and a rich-trans extended pi -conjugated polyene chain structure with pendent groups of p-C6H4C equivalent to CH.

Abstract:The results of studying of the cycloalkylation reaction of phenol with 3-methylcyclohexene in the presence of zeolite Y impregnated with phosphoric acid are presented. It was found that in order to achieve a high yield (71.2%) and selectivity (93.7%) during the cycloalkylation reaction of phenol with 3-methylcyclohexene, the reaction conditions should be as follows: reaction temperature 120 oC, molar ratio of phenol to 3-methylcyclohexene 1:1, volume velocity 0.5 h-1. The results of the synthesis of 2-hydroxy-5(3-methylcyclohexyl) aceto- and benzophenones by the reaction of p-(3-methylcyclohexyl) phenol with acetic acid (AcOH) and benzoyl chloride (BzCl) with the participation of nanosized ZnCl2 as a catalyst are presented. It was found that at a temperature of 140 oC, a reaction time of 40 minutes, and a molar ratio of p-(3-methylcyclohexyl) phenol to AcOH (BzCl) of 1:2, the yield of the target products was 63.3-66.7%.

Abstract:Using palladium‐catalyzed reaction of 5‐(2‐bromophenyl)pent‐3‐en‐1‐ynes with arylboronic acids was studied. Reaction proceeds with C‐Br bond activation, migratory insertion, metathesis with arylboronate, and reductive elimination to yield the desired naphthalene derivatives. Highly substituted naphthalene derivatives were prepared via palladium‐catalyzed reaction of 5‐(2‐bromophenyl)pent‐3‐en‐1‐ynes with arylboronic acids. Typically, reaction of 3‐bromo‐4‐(3‐(4‐chlorophenyl)‐5‐phenyl‐1‐(p‐tolyl)pent‐2‐en‐4‐yn‐1‐yl)‐N‐methylaniline (1a) with PhB(OH)2 in the presence of Pd(PPh3)4 as the catalyst under basic conditions provided 8‐benzhydryl‐7‐(4‐chlorophenyl)‐N‐methyl‐5‐(p‐tolyl)naphthalen‐2‐amine (2a) quantitatively. Overall, 19 new naphthalene compounds were obtained by this methodology and their structures were characterized by spectroscopic methods. In addition, crystal structure of 2j was determined to confirm the structural details. Reaction pathway leading to the desired product is also discussed.

Abstract:A practical method for the oxidation of aromatic side chains was established for the preparation of aromatic aldehydes and ketones. Using NiCl2 as the catalyst, substituted toluenes were oxidized with Na2S2O8 at the benzvlic site for the synthesis of the corresponding aldehydes in the yield of 22%similar to 79%. Ethylbenzene analogs were oxidized more easily to obtain the corresponding ketones with 64%similar to 84% yields. The oxidation of benzyl alcohol analogs was completed to acquire the corresponding carbonyl compounds in shorter time with better selectivity and yields. The method has the advantages such as the mild reaction conditions, no requirement for precious metals or additional promoter, and good selectivity.

Abstract:Abstract A Copper‐catalyzed benzylation of methylenecyclopropanes with potassium benzyltrifluoroborate salts has been developed to produce 2‐benzyl‐3,4‐dihydronaphthalenes in moderate to good yields. This oxidative cyclization reaction proceeds well via a sequence of radical addition, ring‐opening, and cyclization. This protocol represents a new example of methylenecyclopropane oxidative cyclization and tolerates a diverse range of substrate.
