Abstract:The influence of lattice symmetry on the existence of Dirac cones was investigated for two distinct systems: a general two-dimensional (2D) atomic crystal containing two atoms in each unit cell and a 2D electron gas (2DEG) under a periodic muffin-tin potential. A criterion was derived under a tight-binding approximation for the existence of Dirac cones in the atomic crystal. When the transfer hoppings are assumed to be single functions of the distance between atoms, it was shown that the probability of observing Dirac cones in the atomic crystal gradually decreases before being reduced to zero when the lattice changes from hexagonal to square. For a 2DEG with full square symmetry, a Dirac point exists at the Brillouin zone corners, where the energy dispersion is parabolic not linear. These results suggest that conventional Dirac fermions (such as those in graphene) are difficult to achieve in a square lattice with full symmetry (wallpaper group p4mm).
A New Dirac Cone Material: A Graphene- Like Be3c2 Monolayer

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials with Dirac cones exhibit rich physics and many intriguing properties, but the search for new 2D Dirac materials is still a current hotspot. Using the global particle-swarm optimization method and density functional theory, we predict a new stable graphene-like 2D Dirac material: a Be3C2 monolayer with a hexagonal honeycomb structure. The Dirac point occurs exactly at the Fermi level and arises from the merging of the hybridized p(z) bands of Be and C atoms. Most interestingly, this monolayer exhibits a high Fermi velocity in the same order of graphene. Moreover, the Dirac cone is very robust and retains even included spin-orbit coupling or external strain. These outstanding properties render the Be3C2 monolayer a promising 2D material for special electronics applications.

Abstract:A theoretical study is conducted to search for Dirac cones in two-dimensional carbon allotropes with square symmetry. By enumerating the carbon atoms in a unit cell up to 12, an allotrope with octatomic rings is recognized to possess Dirac cones under a simple tight-binding approach. The obtained Dirac cones are accompanied by flat bands at the Fermi level, and the resulting massless Dirac-Weyl fermions are chiral particles with a pseudospin of S = 1, rather than the conventional S = 1∕2 of graphene. The spin-1 Dirac cones are also predicted to exist in hexagonal graphene antidot lattices.

Abstract:The discovery of graphene has led to the devotion of intensive efforts, theoretical and experimental, to produce two-dimensional (2D) materials that can be used for developing functional materials and devices. This work provides a brief review of the recent developments in the lattice models of 2D Dirac materials and their relevant real material counterparts that are crucial for understanding the origins of 2D Dirac cones in electronic band structures as well as their material design and device applications. We focus on the roles of lattice symmetry, atomic orbital hybridization, and spin–orbit coupling in the presence of a Dirac cone. A number of lattice models, such as honeycomb, kagome, ruby, star, Cairo, and line-centered honeycomb, with different symmetries are reviewed based on the tight-binding approach. Inorganic and organic 2D materials, theoretically proposed or experimentally synthesized to satisfy these 2D Dirac lattice models, are summarized.

Abstract:Inspired by the great development of graphene, more and more research has been conducted to seek new two-dimensional (2D) materials with Dirac cones. Although 2D Dirac materials possess many novel properties and physics, they are rare compared with the numerous 2D materials. To provide explanation for the rarity of 2D Dirac materials as well as clues in searching for new Dirac systems, here we review the recent theoretical aspects of various 2D Dirac materials, including graphene, silicene, germanene, graphynes, several boron and carbon sheets, transition-metal oxides (VO2)(n)/(TiO2)(m) and (CrO2)(n)/(TiO2)(m), organic and organometallic crystals, so-MoS2, and artificial lattices (electron gases and ultracold atoms). Their structural and electronic properties are summarized. We also investigate how Dirac points emerge, move, and merge in these systems. The von Neumann-Wigner theorem is used to explain the scarcity of Dirac cones in 2D systems, which leads to rigorous requirements on the symmetry, parameters, Fermi level, and band overlap of materials to achieve Dirac cones. Connections between existence of Dirac cones and the structural features are also discussed.

Abstract:We propose a new concept of a two-dimensional (2D) Dirac semiconductor which is characterized by the emergence of four-fold degenerate band crossings near the band edge, and provide a generic approach to realize this novel semiconductor in the community of material science. Based on the first-principle calculations and symmetry analysis, we discover recently synthesized triple-layer (TL) Bi2OS2 is such a 2D Dirac semiconductor that features a Dirac cone at the X/Y point, protected by a centrosymmetric nonsymmorphic space group. Due to the sandwich-like structure, each Dirac fermion in TL-Bi2OS2 can be regarded as a combination of two Weyl fermions with opposite chiralities, degenerate in momentum-energy space but separated in real space. Such a 2D Dirac semiconductor carries hidden layer-dependent helical spin textures. Moreover, novel topological phase transitions are flexibly achieved in TL-Bi2OS2: (i) a vertical electric field can drive it into the Weyl semiconductor with switchable spin polarization direction; (ii) an extensive strain is able to generate ferroelectric polarization and actuate it into the Weyl nodal ring around the X point and into another type of four-fold degenerate point at the Y point. Our work extends the Dirac fermion into semiconductor systems and provides a promising avenue to integrate spintronics and optoelectronics in topological materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials, especially their most prominent member, graphene, have greatly influenced many scientific areas. Moreover, they have become a base for investigating the relativistic properties of condensed matter within the emerging field of “Dirac physics.” This has ignited an intense search for new materials where charge carriers behave as massless or massive Dirac fermions. Here, by the use of density functional theory and symmetry analysis, we theoretically show the existence of Dirac electrons in a series of 2D transition-metal carbides, known as MXenes. They possess eight conical crossings in the first Brillouin zone with giant spin-orbit splitting. Our findings indicate that the 2D band structure of MXenes is protected against external perturbations and preserved even in multilayer phases. These results, together with the broad possibilities to engineer the properties of these phases, make them a potential candidate for studying novel Dirac-physics-based applications.

Abstract:Materials with Dirac point are so amazing since the charge carriers are massless and have an effective speed of light. Among the reported two-dimensional silicon allotropes, no one showing such exciting nature was proved experimentally. This fact motivates us to search for other such two-dimensional silicon allotropes. As a result, a new single atomic layer thin silicon allotrope was predicted by employing CALYPSO code in this work. This silicon allotrope is composed of eight- membered rings linked by Si-Si bonds and presents buckling formation. Expectedly, the electronic calculation reveals that there exists Dirac point at Fermi energy level. Furthermore, the ab initio molecular dynamics simulations displays that the original atomic configuration can be remained even at an extremely high temperature of 1000 K. We hope this work can expand the family of single atomic layer thin silicon allotropes with Dirac fermions.
Electrically Tunable Multiple Dirac Cones in Thin Films of the (lao)(2)(sbse2)(2) Family of Materials

Abstract:Two-dimensional Dirac physics has aroused great interests in condensed matter physics ever since the discovery of graphene and topological insulators. The ability to control the properties of Dirac cones, such as bandgap and Fermi velocity, is essential for various new phenomena and the next-generation electronic devices. On the basis of first-principles calculations and an analytical effective model, we propose a new Dirac system with eight Dirac cones in thin films of the (LaO)(2)(SbSe2)(2) family of materials, which has the advantage in its tunability: the existence of gapless Dirac cones, their positions, Fermi velocities and anisotropy all can be controlled by an experimentally feasible electric field. We identify layer-dependent spin texture induced by spin-orbit coupling as the underlying physical reason for electrical tunability of this system. Furthermore, the electrically tunable quantum anomalous Hall effect with a high Chern number can be realized by introducing magnetization into this system.
Anomalous Linear and Quadratic Nodeless Surface Dirac Cones in Three-Dimensional Dirac Semimetals

Abstract:Surface Dirac cones in three-dimensional topological insulators have generated tremendous and enduring interest for almost two decades owing to hosting a multitude of exotic properties. In this work, we unveil the existence of two types of anomalous surface Dirac cones in three-dimensional Dirac semimetals. These surface Dirac cones are located at the surfaces perpendicular to the rotation symmetry axis, and are found to display a number of features remarkably different from that in topological insulators. The most prominent one is the absence of singular Dirac node. In addition, the spin textures of these nodeless surface Dirac cones are found to exhibit a unique two-phase-angle dependence, leading to the presence of two different winding numbers in the orbital-resolved spin textures, which is rather different from the well-known spin-momentum locking in topological insulators. Despite the absence of Dirac node, we find that the two types of surface Dirac cones are also characterized by quantized $\pi$ Berry phases, even though one of them takes a quadratic dispersion. In the presence of time-reversal-symmetry-breaking fields, we find that the responses of the surface and bulk Dirac cones display an interesting bulk-surface correspondence. The uncovering of these nodeless surface Dirac cones broadens our understanding of the topological surface states and bulk-boundary correspondence in Dirac semimetals, and also lays down the basis for studying unconventional Dirac physics.

Two-dimensional CoSe Structures: Intrinsic Magnetism, Nonsymmorphic Magnetic Nodal Line, and Antiferromagnetic Metal State

Abstract:The interplay between magnetism, band topology, and electronic correlation in low dimensions has been a fascinating subject of research. Here, we propose two-dimensional (2D) material systems which demonstrate such an interesting interplay. Based on first-principles calculations and structural search algorithms, we identify three lowest energy 2D CoSe structures, termed as the $\alpha$-, $\beta$-, and $\gamma$-CoSe. We show that $\alpha$- and $\gamma$-CoSe are ferromagnetic metals. They possess rich topological band features, including the nonsymmorphic magnetic nodal line, the magnetic Weyl point, and the magnetic Weyl loop. Remarkably, all these features are robust against spin-orbit coupling. Meanwhile, $\beta$-CoSe is a rare example of a 2D antiferromagnetic metal, which is related to a Fermi surface nesting feature for its three conduction band valleys. The possible phase transitions and the experimental aspects have been discussed.
Dirac Semimetals in Two Dimensions

Abstract:Graphene is famous for being a host of 2D Dirac fermions. However, spin-orbit coupling introduces a small gap, so that graphene is formally a quantum spin hall insulator. Here we present symmetry-protected 2D Dirac semimetals, which feature Dirac cones at high-symmetry points that are \emph{not} gapped by spin-orbit interactions, and exhibit behavior distinct from both graphene and 3D Dirac semimetals. Using a two-site tight-binding model, we construct representatives of three possible distinct Dirac semimetal phases, and show that single symmetry-protected Dirac points are impossible in two dimensions. An essential role is played by the presence of non-symmorphic space group symmetries. We argue that these symmetries tune the system to the boundary between a 2D topological and trivial insulator. By breaking the symmetries we are able to access trivial and topological insulators as well as Weyl semimetal phases.

Abstract:We theoretically predict that a large variety of Dirac-cone materials can be constructed in Bi${}_{1-x}$Sb${}_{x}$ thin films, and we here show how to construct single-, bi- and tri- Dirac-cone materials with various amounts of wave vector anisotropy. These different types of Dirac cones can be of special interest to electronic devices design, quantum electrodynamics and other fields.

Abstract:Materials harboring exotic quasiparticles, such as Dirac and Weyl fermions\cite{xu2015discovery,borisenko2015time,weng2015weyl,xu2015observation}, have garnered much attention from the physics and material science communities. These fermions are massless and, in some materials, have shown exceptional physical properties such as ultrahigh mobility and extremely large magnetoresistances \cite{liang2015ultrahigh,ali2014large,du2015unsaturated,shekhar2015large}. Recently, new materials have been predicted to exist which exhibit line nodes of Dirac cones \cite{PhysRevLett.115.036806,xie2015new,burkov2011topological,rhim2015landau}. Here, we show with angle resolved photoemission studies supported by \textit{ab initio} calculations that the highly stable, non-toxic and earth-abundant material, ZrSiS, has an electronic band structure that hosts several Dirac cones which form a Fermi surface with a diamond-shaped line of Dirac nodes. We also experimentally show, for the first time, that the square Si lattice in ZrSiS is an excellent template for realizing the new types of 2D Dirac cones recently predicted by Young and Kane \cite{young2015dirac} and image an unforseen surface state that arises close to the 2D Dirac cone. Finally, we find that the energy range of the linearly dispersed bands is as high as 2\,eV above and below the Fermi level; much larger than of any known Dirac material so far. This makes ZrSiS a very promising candidate to study the exotic behavior of Dirac electrons, or Weyl fermions if a magnetic field is applied, as well as the properties of lines of Dirac nodes
Topological Dirac States Beyond Π Orbitals for Silicene on SiC(0001) Surface

Abstract:The discovery of intriguing properties related to the Dirac states in graphene has spurred huge interest in exploring its two-dimensional group-IV counterparts, such as silicene, germanene, and stanene. However, these materials have to be obtained via synthesizing on substrates with strong interfacial interactions, which usually destroy their intrinsic π(p_z)-orbital Dirac states. Here we report a theoretical study on the existence of Dirac states arising from the p_x,y orbitals instead of p_z orbitals in silicene on 4H-SiC(0001), which survive in spite of the strong interfacial interactions. We also show that the exchange field together with the spin-orbital coupling give rise to a detectable band gap of 1.3 meV. Berry curvature calculations demonstrate the nontrivial topological nature of such Dirac states with a Chern number C = 2, presenting the potential of realizing quantum anomalous Hall effect for silicene on SiC(0001). Finally, we construct a minimal effective model to capture the low-energy physics of this system. This finding is expected to be also applicable to germanene and stanene, and imply great application potentials in nanoelectronics.
Tilted Dirac Cones in Two-Dimensional Materials: Impact on Electron Transmission and Pseudospin Dynamics

Abstract:This study is devoted to the profound implications of tilted Dirac cones on the quantum transport properties of two-dimensional (2D) Dirac materials. These materials, characterized by their linear conic energy dispersions in the vicinity of Dirac points, exhibit unique electronic behaviors, including the emulation of massless Dirac fermions and the manifestation of relativistic phenomena such as Klein tunneling. Expanding beyond the well-studied case of graphene, the manuscript focuses on materials with tilted Dirac cones, where the anisotropic and tilted nature of the cones introduces additional complexity and richness to their electronic properties. The investigation begins by considering a heterojunction of 2D Dirac materials, where electrons undergo quantum tunneling between regions with upright and tilted Dirac cones. The role of tilt in characterizing the transmission of electrons across these interfaces is thoroughly examined, shedding light on the influence of the tilt parameter on the transmission probability and the fate of the pseudospin of the Dirac electrons, particularly upon a sudden change in the tilting. We also investigate the probability of reflection and transmission from an intermediate slab with arbitrary subcritical tilt, focusing on the behavior of electron transmission across regions with varying Dirac cone tilts. The study demonstrates that for certain thicknesses of the middle slab, the transmission probability is equal to unity, and both reflection and transmission exhibit periodic behavior with respect to the slab thickness.

Antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetals in two dimensions

Abstract:The search for symmetry-protected two-dimensional (2D) Dirac semimetals analogous to graphene is important both for fundamental and practical interest. The 2D Dirac cones are protected by crystalline symmetries and magnetic ordering may destroy their robustness. Here we propose a general framework to classify stable 2D Dirac semimetals in spin-orbit coupled systems having the combined time-reversal and inversion symmetries, and show the existence of the stable Dirac points in 2D antiferromagnetic semimetals. Compared to 3D Dirac semimetals which fall into two distinct classes, Dirac semimetals in 2D with combined time-reversal and inversion symmetries belong to a single class which is closely related to the nonsymmorphic space-group symmetries. We further provide a concrete model in antiferromagnetic semimetals which supports symmetry-protected 2D Dirac points. The symmetry breaking in such systems leads to 2D chiral topological states such as quantum anomalous Hall insulator and chiral topological superconductor phases.

Abstract:Abstract Dirac materials possess many excellent electrical properties, resulting that the search and design of Dirac materials have become a hot research area. Revealing the formation conditions of Dirac cone (DC) can provide theoretical guidance for the search and design of Dirac materials. To obtain the necessary conditions for the formation of DC of two-dimensional (2D) materials with six-fold symmetry (SFS), the DC formation mechanism was analyzed by the ‘divide-and-couple’ approach in the framework of tight-binding theory, confirmed by the subsequent density functional theory calculations. The simple ‘6 n + 2’ rule was proposed to determine whether the 2D materials with SFS have DCs, i.e. when the number of atoms in a unit cell is 6 n + 2, the systems would possess DCs at the vertex of Brillouin zone for the 2D materials composed of the elements of the IV main group. Moreover, the ‘3 n + 1’ rule was derived as the condition for the DC formation in graphene-like silagraphene with SFS and used to design a silagraphene Si 6 C 8 with DCs. Understanding the DC formation mechanism of 2D materials with SFS not only provides theoretical guidance for designing novel Dirac materials but also sheds light on the symmetry origin of the formation mechanism of DC.
