Abstract:The substantial release of NH3 during composting leads to nitrogen (N) losses and poses environmental hazards. Additives can mitigate nitrogen loss by adsorbing NH3/NH4, adjusting pH, and enhancing nitrification, thereby improving compost quality. Herein, we assessed the effects of combining bacterial inoculants (BI) (1.5%) with tricalcium phosphate (CA) (2.5%) on N retention, organic N conversion, bacterial biomass, functional genes, network patterns, and enzyme activity during kitchen waste (KW) composting. Results revealed that adding of 1.5%/2.5% (BI + CA) significantly (p < 0.05) improved ecological parameters, including pH (7.82), electrical conductivity (3.49 mS/cm), and N retention during composting. The bacterial network properties of CA (265 node) and BI + CA (341 node) exhibited a substantial niche overlap compared to CK (210 node). Additionally, treatments increased organic N and total N (TN) content while reducing NH4+-N by 65.42% (CA) and 77.56% (BI + CA) compared to the control (33%). The treatments, particularly BI + CA, significantly (p < 0.05) increased amino acid N, hydrolyzable unknown N (HUN), and amide N, while amino sugar N decreased due to bacterial consumption. Network analysis revealed that the combination expanded the core bacterial nodes and edges involved in organic N transformation. Key genes facilitating nitrogen mediation included nitrate reductase (nasC and nirA), nitrogenase (nifK and nifD), and hydroxylamine oxidase (hao). The structural equation model suggested that combined application (CA) and microbial inoculants enhance enzyme activity and bacterial interactions during composting, thereby improving nitrogen conversion and increasing the nutrient content of compost products.
Insights into effects of thermotolerant nitrifying and sulfur-oxidizing inoculants on nitrogen-sulfur co-metabolism in sewage sludge composting

Abstract:In this study, high temperature thermotolerant nitrifying bacteria (TNB) and high temperature thermotolerant sulfide oxidizing bacteria (TSOB) were obtained from compost samples and inoculated into sewage sludge (SS) compost. The effects of inoculation on physical and chemical parameters, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide release, nitrogen form and sulfur compound content change and physical-chemical properties during nitrogen and sulfur conversion were studied. The results showed that inoculation of TNB and TSOB increased the temperature, pH, OM degradation, C/N ratio and germination index (GI) of compost. Compared with the control treatment (CK), the addition of inoculants reduced the release of NH3 and H2S, and transformed them into nitrogen and sulfur compounds, the hydrolysis of polymeric ferrous sulfate was promoted, resulting in relatively high content of sulfite and sulfate. At the same time, the physical and chemical properties of SS have a strong correlation with nitrogen and sulfur compounds.

Abstract:The effects of two nitrogen fertilizer synergists (urease inhibitor, UI; nitrification inhibitor, NI) on NH3 and N2O emissions and the successions of the amoA and nirS genes during composting were assessed. Results showed that the UI and UI + NI treatments reduced NH3 emissions by 26.3% and 24.3%, respectively, and N2O emissions were reduced by 63.9% for UI + NI treatment but were not reduced by UI. The addition of UI and NI significantly reduced the abundance of the nirS gene during thermophilic stage, while significantly increased that of the amoA gene during maturation stage. Crenarchaeota was the principal nitrifying archaeal phylum and was significantly affected by pH. Proteobacteria was the main denitrifying bacterial phylum, whose relative abundance was higher for UI + NI treatment than the other treatments. PICRUSt analysis showed that the addition of UI and NI inhibited enzymatic activity related to N transformation during thermophilic stage while enriching enzymatic activity during maturation phase.

Abstract:The ongoing 4+-N and nutrient accumulation were higher in the high fecal volume treatment than in the low fecal volume treatment. Bacterial community composition and structure in UDCTs varied with composting stage and fecal volume. The diversity and richness of bacterial community in compost were changed with different fecal volumes, but the dominant groups were similar. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that nitrogen and organic carbon were the main drivers of bacterial community changes during composting. Highly nutritious and non-phytotoxic compost products were suitable for agronomic uses. Based on these results, UDCTs can be an effective way to solve the problem of fecal pollution in rural areas, and fecal dosage is a potential influencing factor in the operation and maintenance of composting systems.

Abstract:Microbial inoculation plays a significant role in promoting the efficiency of biowaste conversion. This study investigates the function of Streptomyces-Bacillus Inoculants (SBI) on carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) conversion, and microbial dynamics, during cow manure (10% and 20% addition) and corn straw co-composting. Compared to inoculant-free controls, inoculant application accelerated the compost's thermophilic stage (8 vs 15 days), and significantly increased compost total N contents (+47%) and N-reductase activities (nitrate reductase: +60%; nitrite reductase: +219%). Both bacterial and fungal community succession were significantly affected by DOC, urease, and NH 4 + -N, while the fungal community was also significantly affected by cellulase. The contribution rate of Cupriavidus to the physicochemical factors of compost was as high as 83.40%, but by contrast there were no significantly different contributions (∼60%) among the top 20 fungal genera. Application of SBI induced significant correlations between bacteria, compost C/N ratio, and catalase enzymes, indicative of compost maturation. We recommend SBI as a promising bio-composting additive to accelerate C and N turnover and high-quality biowaste maturation. SBI boosts organic cycling by transforming biowastes into bio-fertilizers efficiently. This highlights the potential for SBI application to improve plant growth and soil quality in multiple contexts.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to compare the effect of functional inoculant and different nitrogen sources on the relationship among lignocellulose, precursors, and humus as well as their interactions with bacterial genera in straw composting. Results showed that inoculation improved the heating process and retained more nitrate compared to control. Inoculation increased the degradation of lignocellulosic components by 26.9%-81.6% and the formation of humus by 15.7%-23.0%. Bioinformatics analysis showed that inoculation enriched key genera Chryseolinea in complex nitrogen source (pig manure) compost and Pusillimas, Luteimonas, and Flavobacteria in single nitrogen source (urea) compost, which were related to humus formation. Network analysis found that inoculation and urea addition improved the microbial synergistic effect and inoculation combined with pig manure had more complex modularity and interactions. Combining the functional bacterial inoculant with urea helped to enhance the degradation of lignocellulose and humification process during straw composting especially with single nitrogen source.

Abstract:The aims of this article were to study the effect of Fenton pretreatment and bacterial inoculation on cellulose-degrading genes and fungal communities during rice straw composting. The rice straw was pretreated by Fenton reactions and functional bacterial agents were then inoculated during the cooling phase of composting. Three treatment groups were carried out, the control (CK), Fenton pretreatment (FeW) and Fenton pretreatment and bacterial inoculation (FeWI). The results indicated that Fenton pretreatment and bacterial inoculation changed the fungal communities composition and increased fungal diversity, leading to changes in the cellulose-degrading genes. In addition, a network analysis showed that in the FeWI treatment, the fungi from modules 1, 5 and 8 were core hosts of the cellulose-degrading genes driving the cellulosic degradation. Moreover, Fenton pretreatment and bacterial inoculation changed the core module fungal communities and strengthened the correlation between the core fungi and the cellulose-degrading genes, thereby promoting cellulosic degradation. Based on redundancy and structural equation model analyses, the NH4+-N, TOC, pH and Shannon index were important factors influencing the variations in the cellulose-degrading genes. This study provides a foundation for cellulosic degradation during cellulosic waste composting.

Abstract:Sludge composting is one of the most widely used treatments for sewage sludge resource utilization. Natural zeolite and nitrification inhibitor (NI) are widely used during composting and land application for nitrogen conservation, respectively. Three composting reactors (A—the control, B—natural zeolite addition, and C—3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) addition) were established to investigate the influence of NI and natural zeolite addition on organics degradation and nitrogen transformation during sludge composting conducted at the lab scale. The results showed that, in comparison with the control, natural zeolite addition accelerated organics degradation and the maturity of sludge compost was higher, while the DMPP addition slowed down the degradation of organic matters. Meanwhile, the nitrogen transformation functional genes including those responses for nitrification (amoA and nxrA) and denitrification (narG, nirS, nirK, and nosZ) were quantified through quantitative PCR (qPCR) to investigate the effects of natural zeolites andDMPP addition on nitrogen transformation. Although no significant difference in the abundance of nitrogen transformation functional genes was observed between treatments, addition of both natural zeolite and DMPP increases the final total nitrogen content by 48.6% and 23.1%, respectively. The ability of natural zeolite for nitrogen conservation was due to the absorption of NH3 by compost, and nitrogen conservation by DMPP was achieved by the source reduction of denitrification. Besides, it was assumed that the addition of natural zeolite and DMPP may affect the activity of these genes instead of the abundance.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to access the effects of thermotolerant nitrifying microorganisms and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria on microbial community and enzyme activity involved in nitrogen‐sulfur metabolism during laboratory-scale sewage sludge (SS) composting,and to do a microbial-environmental factor association analysis to promote composting key species for nitrogen‐sulfur transformation in the body. The microbial community structure and the activities variation of six key enzyme involved were detected. The microbial inocula added had little impact on the diversity of the microbial community but changed its succession direction, and the abundance of Actinobacteria was decreased obviously of inoculation treatment (TR). The three dominant genera and indicator species in TR were significantly correlated with the conversion of nitrogen and sulfur. The addition of microbial inocula promoted the conversion of nitrogen and sulfur in SS compost, and increased the activities of the key enzymes and the microbial genera involved in nitrogen‐sulfur conversion. In other words, the nitrification and sulfur oxidation were enhanced simultaneously in the later stage of composting in TR.

Abstract:The influences of combination of garbage enzyme and biochar on total organic carbon (TOC) degradation, humification and the fungal succession during sewage sludge (SS) composting were established. Results showed that the GE and BC + GE treatments significantly increased the enzyme activity of fluorescein diacetate hydrolase (FDA) and increased the TOC degradation rate by 9.8% and 21.9% relative to control. The excitation-emission matrix (EEM) combined with the percentage fluorescence response (Pi, n) also proved that the combination of BC and GE promoted fulvic acid-like and humic-like substances production, and thus increased humification. Furthermore, the combination of BC and GE effectively decreased the relative abundance of Unclassified_k_Fugni, while increased the abundance of Ascomycota and Basidiomycota compared with control. The four genera, Pseudeurotium, Talaromyces, Trichoderma, and Penicillium, were the main fungi for the humification. Comparatively, the combined of BC and GE showed the optimal performance for TOC degradation and humification during SS composting.

Abstract:In order to investigate the potential effect of sulfur (S) aided composting on NH3 volatilization mitigation, bisphenol A (PBA) and estrogens (estrone, 17 beta-estradiol, estriol, and 17a-ethinylestradiol) degradation and biosolids stabilization, five treatments of S (i.e., 0, 0.25%, 0.50%, 1.0%, and 2.0%, dry weight basis) were applied to the mixtures of biosolids and wheat straw during the 50 days of composting stabilization process. Results implicated addition of S decreased alkalinity of compost system, mitigated NH3 volatilization, facilitated degradation of bisphenol A and estrogen in biosolids, and improved biosolids stabilization. Compared to control, the S-added treatments reduced nitrogen loss by 29.39%-97.22%, and degraded PBA and estrogens in biosolids by 25.42-72.63% and 21.11-68.14%, respectively, with S additions in range of 0.25-2.0%. In terms of economic efficiency and ecological risk, S addition at <= 0.50% is suggested for composting stabilization of biosolids.

Abstract:The main purpose of this study was to explore the effects of Fenton pretreatment combined with bacterial inoculation on humification characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) during rice straw composting. Three treatment groups (Fenton pretreatment: FeW, Fenton pretreatment and bacterial inoculation: FeWI, control: CK) were carried out during composting. The results showed that total organic carbon concentration of DOM and HIX showed an increase trend in all treatments in the composting process. The fungi that affect DOM conversion showed remarkable effects, meanwhile, fungal numbers of influencing DOM conversion were higher for FeWI than CK and FeW. The contribution rate of fungi to DOM was greater than that of environmental factors in FeWI composting, while environmental factors accounted for a large proportion in FeW and CK composting. This study exhibits referential significance for the effective degradation of agricultural wastes.

Abstract:Alterations in microbial community succession patterns and enzyme activities by petroleum pollutants during co-composting of straw and swine manure with the supplementary nitrogen source are unclear. In this study, urea was added into co-composting systems, and the removal performance of petroleum, microbial enzyme activity and community changes were investigated. Results showed that the polyphenol oxidase and catalase activities which were both related to the degradation of petroleum contaminants were accordingly increased from 20.65 to 30.31 U/g and from 171.87 to 231.86 U/g due to urea addition. The removal efficiency of petroleum contaminants in composting with urea increased from 45.06% to 82.29%. The addition of urea increased the diversity and abundance of petroleum-degrading microorganisms, and enhanced microbial linkages. This study provides a novel strategy for the degradation of petroleum hydrocarbon as well as a new insight into the effect of urea on both microbial processes and composting phases.

Abstract:To address the defects of traditional composting products, such as slow fertilizer efficiency, high dosage and high emissions of gas pollutants, we propose a new composting process from the perspective of increasing the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content in compost. The results showed that nanobiofilm-covered echelon oxygen-controlled composting could effectively reduce the emissions of CH 4 , CO 2 and NH 3 and increase the DOC content in the composting products. Among the methods, using nanobiofilm covering and applying moderate ventilation during the warming phase and high ventilation during the high-temperature phase, along with low ventilation during the cooling and maturation phases (T3), proved to be the most effective in promoting the conversion of carbon to dissolved organic carbon and in reducing carbon and nitrogen losses. Compared to the control, this treatment resulted in a 36.16% reduction in total carbon loss, a 21.14% reduction in total nitrogen loss, and a 57.22% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions while also increasing the DOC content by 82.64%. This is because treatment T3 initially maintained the composting process in an aerobic state, followed by a semianaerobic state, which is conducive to the accumulation of DOC. The research results provide a new technical path for improving the quality, efficiency and emission reduction of organic fertilizer.

Abstract:This study investigated the impact of adding enzyme inducer (MnSO 4 ) on humic substance (HS) formation during straw composting. The results demonstrated that both enzyme inducer treatment group (Mn) and functional microorganism treatment group (F) led to an increase in the content of HS compared to the treatment group without enzyme inducer and functional microorganism (CK). Interestingly, the enzyme inducer exhibited a higher promoting effect on HS (57.80 % ~ 58.58 %) than functional microbial (46.54 %). This was because enzyme inducer stimulated the growth of key microorganisms and changed the interaction relationship between microorganisms. The structural equation model suggested that the enzyme inducer promoted the utilization of amino acids by the fungus and facilitated the conversion of precursors to humic substance components. These findings provided a direction for improving the quality of composting products from agricultural straw waste. It also provided theoretical support for adding MnSO 4 to compost.

Abstract:Aerobic composting is increasingly regarded as a promising technology for the recycling of spent mushroom substrate (SMS), and an applicable nitrogen source is necessary to improve the process. This study is the first to investigate the effects of protein-like N source (chicken manure, CM) and high-N source (urea, UR) on humification process and P dynamics during SMS composting. The effect of different N sources on microbial succession was also studied. Results showed that CM addition achieved a longer thermophilic phase (16 d vs 9 d), greater germination indices (131.6% vs 106.3%), and higher total phosphorus content (13.1 g/kg vs 6.56 g/kg) in the end products, as compared to UR. The addition of CM showed beneficial effects on humification and stabilization, including decreased weight loss and fluctuations in the level of functional groups. The P produced in the compost was interconverted and leached in the P pool. In this case, the P detected in the compost was in the form of orthophosphate and MgNH4PO4 center dot 6H(2)O crystal as inorganic P and orthophosphate monoester as organic P. The most abundant microorganisms at the phylum level mainly include Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Proteobacteria, accounting for more than 88% of the total microorganisms. The addition of CM to SMS compost resulted in higher organic matter degradation rates. This work clarified the role of various N sources in SMS composting and presented an appropriate waste management method beneficial to bioresource technology and sustainable development of the edible fungi business.

Abstract:The aim of this paper was to confirm the role of inhibitors addition, namely adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and malonic acid (MA), on nitrogen availability during rice straw (RS) composting. The results showed that inhibitors addition slowed down the mineralization of ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen compared to CK. Meanwhile, amino sugar nitrogen and hydrolysable unknown nitrogen contents in ATP and MA treatments were higher, indicating that their addition improved the retention of organic nitrogen components. Furthermore, inhibitors additions attenuated the responsive relationship between bacterial communities and nitrogen components. The main reason was that the addition changed the bacterial community structure of RS compost. The final structural equation verified that inhibitors addition enhanced conversion between nitrogen components, that was, to complex nitrogen components to improve the quality of compost, and the remodeling of bacterial community played an important role. Therefore, adding inhibitors had a driving effect on promoting nitrogen sequestration.

Abstract:Microbial inoculation plays a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency of biowaste conversion. In this study, we investigated the effects of inoculating a complex microbial agent called the BP consortium, comprising Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus subtilis, and Penicillium chrysogenum , at different stages of swine manure (SM) aerobic composting, specifically the initial stage and cooling stage. Our objective was to examine the impact of BP inoculation on nitrogen conversion, enzyme activity, and microbial community dynamics through a 35-day aerobic composting experiment. Compared to the group without the inoculant, initial-stage inoculation of BP led to a remarkable increase of 23.12% and 140.91% in the germination index and NO 3 − -N content of the final product, respectively. Furthermore, it effectively reduced NH 3 and N 2 O releases by 65.73% and 18.76% during the SM composting process. The activities of urease also exhibited significant increase at the conclusion of the experiment. Additionally, we observed a proportional increase in the number of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria during the thermophilic stage of composting. However, BP inoculation during the cooling phase did not demonstrate a positive effect on nitrogen retention. Nevertheless, the findings from this investigation provide valuable guidance for the implementation of BP consortium inoculation to mitigate nitrogen loss during SM aerobic composting.

The Effects of Long-Term Application of Stabilized and Coated Urea on Soil Chemical Properties, Microbial Community Structure, and Functional Genes in Paddy Fields

Abstract:The addition of fertilizers is indispensable in agricultural production, and currently, there is a wide variety of new types of fertilizers available. For example, commonly used are stabilized fertilizers with inhibitors and coated slow-release fertilizers, among others. However, the long-term effects of these fertilizers, when applied continuously are still uncertain. This study will provide scientific and theoretical support for the development and promotion of these fertilizers. A 16-year paddy field with brown soil treated with different urease and nitrification inhibitors, sulfur-coated urea (SCU), and resin-coated urea (PCU) was studied. The study showed that long-term use of conventional urea nitrogen fertilizer resulted in a significant reduction in soil total phosphorus (TP). Long-term application of NBPT and conventional urea significantly increased soil organic matter (SOM). Moreover, except for HQ and NBPT+DMPP, the prolonged application of new urea fertilizers also significantly enhanced soil total potassium (TK). Application of SCU fertilizer in brown soil type paddy fields resulted in a significant decrease in soil pH over time. However, changes in pH had no effect on the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), as AOB was mainly affected by soil-available N. DMPP, HQ+DCD, NBPT+DMPP, SCU, and PCU significantly reduced the 16S rRNA gene copy number of soil bacteria, with the greatest effect of coated urea fertilizer (SCU and PCU). Long-term application of stable urea fertilizer with HQ significantly reduced the bacterial community in paddy soil. Conversely, HQ+DCD-stabilizede urea fertilizer significantly increased the population structure and abundance of Basidiomycota fungi while decreasing the population structure and abundance of Rozellomycota fungi. DMPP-stabilized urea fertilizer notably increased the population structure and abundance of Ascomycota fungi while decreasing the population structure and abundance of Rozellomycota and Chytridiomycota fungi. Furthermore, HQ-stabilized urea fertilizer significantly reduced the population structure and abundance of Chytridiomycota fungi.

Abstract:Low humification and nitrogen loss pose substantial challenges to the resource utilization in kitchen waste composting. This study investigated the effects of brown-rot fungi (BRF), cellulolytic nitrogen fixing bacteria (CNFB), and their composite microbial inoculants (CMI) during composting. Results indicated that microbial inoculants extended the thermophilic phase and enhanced cellulose degradation. Compared with the control, the degree of polymerization (HA/FA) in BRF, CNFB, and CMI was 2.28, 1.85, and 2.68 times higher, respectively, while increasing total nitrogen by 11.15%, 15.50%, and 19.73%. BRF and CMI primarily enhanced the Maillard humification pathway, while CNFB promoted the polyphenol humification pathway. Additionally, BRF enhanced nitrification and reduced denitrification, whereas CNFB and CMI improved nitrification, nitrogen fixation, and ammonification while reducing denitrification. Overall, BRF primarily promoted humification, while CNFB excelled in nitrogen retention. The CMI achieved optimal humification and nitrogen retention, indicating a potential sustainable solution for kitchen waste composting.
