Abstract:Nuclear energy is an effective way to resolve the energy crisis and environmental pollution problems. Virtual reactor is a multidisciplinary research field involving nuclear engineering, high-performance computing (HPC), applied physics, computational mathematics, and software engineering. Virtual reactor leverages science-based models, stateof-the-art numerical methods, leadership-class supercomputers, and engineering practices to accurately describe, analyze, and plan for the complicated phenomena in reactors. With the evolution in architecture and semiconductor technology, HPC has developed rapidly. The upcoming ‘‘exascale’’ computing era (with a processing ability of 10 flop/ s) offers the opportunity to solve some currently intractable problems in the energy field. Combining fundamental research and industry application, virtual reactor makes it possible to achieve reactor power uprates, life extensions, safety enhancement, material optimization, and waste reduction for both existing and future reactors. The special issue highlights recent research on models, algorithms, programming, mathematics, data analysis, simulation, material science, fuel performance, thermal hydraulics, neutronics, nuclear energy, and other energy and environment fields. Papers selected for this special issue present new developments and insights into these fields. A broad range of topics is discussed, especially in the following areas: comparison of numerical simulation and experiment; innovation and application of multi-scale grid generation method; optimization and application of Monte Carlo method; multi-scale simulation methods for nuclear materials; and multi-physics coupling simulation methods in virtual reactors. In the paper titled ‘‘Experimental and numerical analysis of the spray characteristics of biodiesel–ethanol fuel blends,’’ Geng et al. use experimental and numerical methods to investigate the effects of adding ethanol on the macroscopic and microscopic spray characteristics of biodiesel. The spray tip penetration (STP) was recorded with a high-speed camera system, while the statistical size distribution of atomized droplets and the Sauter mean diameter (SMD) were obtained using a Malvern laser particle size analyzer. The spray calculation models were established with Fluent software, and the calculation results were validated by the experimental results. Then the numerical simulation of the spray characteristics for diesel, biodiesel, and biodiesel ethanol fuel blends was conducted. The results showed that the concentration and velocity of atomized droplets are related to the distance from the nozzle exit, and adding 30% ethanol to biodiesel can effectively improve its spray quality. In the paper titled ‘‘Conversion of the geological model (fine-mesh) to a dynamic (coarse-mesh) hydrocarbon model with the nature approach in the simulation of thermal recovery in a fractured reservoir,’’ Foroozanfar et al. introduce a methodology that was inspired by Earth’s pattern to generate multi-scale grids on a multi-phase, heterogeneous reservoir, where the enhanced oil recovery process is steam injection. The principle of multi-scale grid generation in hydrocarbon reservoirs is as follows: regions with a high Darcy’s velocity should be fine-scale and other segments with low intensity of heterogeneity regions could resize into the up-scale. The results of the multi-scale grid generation method, which was inspired by Earth’s pattern, were compared with the fine-mesh (geological) model; the results show that the proposed method predicts with high accuracy and less run-time compared with the fine-mesh model.
