Abstract:Twinning is commonly activated in plastic deformation of low stacking-fault face-centered cubic (Fcc) metals but rarely found in body-centered cubic (Bcc) metals under room temperature and slow strain rates. Here, by conducting in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) at atomic scale, we discover that, in stark contrast to those in most Fcc metals, a majority of deformation twins in Bcc metals are unstable and undergo spontaneously detwinning upon unloading. Such unexpected instability of Bcc twins is found to be closely related to the prevalence of the inclined twin boundaries-a peculiar structure where twin boundaries are not parallel to the twinning plane, and the degree of instability is in direct proportion to the fraction of the inclined twin boundary. This work provides significant insights into the structure and stability of deformation twins in Bcc metals.

Abstract:Cu 2 O nanoparticles are investigated at atomic scale by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. It is found that growth {111} twinning is the most common type of defects in these nanoparticles. The atomic structure of the twinning boundaries is determined referring to the detailed image simulations based on the structure model refined by first-principles calculation. The twin boundary plane is along a {111} oxygen plane and the twinning shows a crystallographic relation with a symmetry operation of 180° rotation around a ⟨111⟩ axis perpendicular to the plane. The effect of the twinning on the stability of the particles is discussed.

Abstract:Twinning is a common phenomenon in crystal growth and mechanical deformation. It plays a key role in tuning mechanical and transport properties of metals. In transition metal oxides, the twinning may give additional changes related to magnetism. In this work, the atomic configuration and electronic structure of the twin boundaries in rock‐salt type NiO are studied combining aberration‐corrected transmission electron microscopy, and first‐principles calculations. For NiO, the twinning occurs on the (111) plane, with oxygen atoms located at the twin boundary and antiferromagnetic coupling between the mirroring Ni atomic planes near the twin boundary. The configuration gives the twin boundary energy of 0.26 J/m2. Atomic and magnetic structures of five‐fold twins in NiO have also been investigated. Due to the competing exchange interaction at the core of five‐fold twins, ferromagnetic coupling is formeded in the otherwise antiferromagnetic twin boundaries.This article is protected by copyright. Interactions Between Dislocations and Penta-Twins in Metallic Nanocrystals

Abstract:Dislocation interactions with twin boundary (TB) have been well-established in nanotwinned metals. Penta-twins, as an extreme of crystal twinning, are tacitly assumed to be more effective at blocking dislocation motions than conventional single or coplanar nanotwins. However, the mechanism underlying the interactions between dislocations and penta-twins remains largely unclear. Here, by combining in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) nanomechanical testing and atomistic simulations, we rationalize the fundamental interactions between dislocations and penta-twins in Au nanocrystals. Our results reveal that the interactions between dislocations and penta-twins show some similar behaviors to the ones in the cases of coplanar nanotwins, including dislocation impedance at TBs, cross-slip into the twinning plane and transmission across the TB. In addition, penta-twins also exhibit some unique behaviors during dislocation interactions, including multiple cross-slip, dislocation-induced core dissociation and climb-induced annihilation/absorption at the penta-twin core. These findings enhance our mechanistic understanding of dislocation behaviors in penta-twins, shedding light on the accessible design of high-performance nanomaterials with multi-twinned nanostructures.
Discrete Twinning Dynamics and Size-Dependent Dislocation-to Twin Transition in Body-Centred Cubic Tungsten

Abstract:Body-centred cubic（BCC） metals are known to have unstable intrinsic stacking faults and high resistance to deformation twinning, which can strongly influence their twinning behaviour. Though twinning mechanisms of BCC metals have been investigated for more than 60 years, the atomistic level dynamics of twinning remains under debate, especially regarding its impact on competition between twinning and slip. Here, we investigate the atomistic level dynamics of twinning in BCC tungsten（W） nanowires using in situ nanomechanical testing. Quantitative experimental studies directly visualize that deformation twins in W nanowires have a minimum size of six-layers and grow in increments of approximately three-layers at a time, in contrast to the layer-by-layer growth of deformation twins in face-centred cubic metals. These unique twinning dynamics induces a strong competition with ordinary dislocation slip,as exhibited by a size-dependent dislocation-to-twin transition in W nanowires, with a transition size of ～40 nm. Our work provides physical insight into the dynamics of twinning at the atomic level, as well as a size-dependent dislocation-twinning competition, which have important implications for the plastic deformation in a broad class of BCC metals and alloys.
The BCC-FCC Phase Transformation Pathways and Crystal Orientation Relationships in Dual Phase Materials From Al-(Co)-Cr-Fe-Ni Alloys

Abstract:The alloy system Al-(Co)-Cr-Fe-Ni contains compositional ranges where a solid state BCC-FCC phase transformation leads to dual-phase materials composed of face-centered cubic (FCC) and body-centered cubic (BCC) phases with nearly equal volume fraction. The microstructure arising from this transformation at slow cooling rates is the classical Widmanstätten structure, with FCC-laths and colonies growing from grain boundaries into the parent BCC-B2 grain. Very distinct microstructures are obtained, when Widmanstätten growth is kinetically suppressed e.g., during continuous cooling with high cooling rates. These novel microstructures are associated with the spinodal decomposition of the parent BCC-B2 such that FCC growth occurs during the spinodal decomposition or upon annealing from a metastable, fully spinodal state. We review the microstructures at case as function of the imposed cooling regimes for the Co-free medium entropy alloy AlCrFe2Ni2. One of them, termed ultrafine vermicular microstructure, involves a characteristic and novel crystal orientation relationship (OR) between FCC and BCC. We identify the common planes and directions of this OR using electron backscatter diffraction maps to be {111}F⁢C⁢C∥{12⁢1¯}B⁢C⁢C and ⟨1¯01⟩F⁢C⁢C∥⟨1¯01¯⟩BCC, respectively. Embedded is a second OR with {1⁢3¯⁢1¯}F⁢C⁢C∥{1¯⁢03}B⁢C⁢C and ⟨101⟩FCC∥⟨010⟩BCC. We further show that the vermicular FCC phase contains a high amount of lattice strain and sub-grain boundaries with disorientation angles in the range from 2 to 12°, as a result of the solid-state phase transformation.

Abstract:Twinning is found to impart favorable mechanical, physical and chemical properties to nanostructured materials. One important twinning mode, deformation twinning, prevails in coarse-grained hexagonal close-packed (HCP) crystalline materials and body-centered cubic (BCC) and face-centered cubic (FCC) nanomaterials under high-stress conditions. In FCC structures, the <112>{111} deformation twinning is traditionally believed to nucleate and grow through layer-by-layer emission of 1/6<112> Shockley partial dislocations on consecutive {111} planes. Here, we report that by conducting high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) observation, deformation twinning is, for the first time, found to occur in nanocrystalline (Fe, Nb)23Zr6 particles with a Mn23Th6-type FCC structure that is composed of a Zr-octahedron-based FCC network connected by alloying elements Fe and Nb like the large FCC structure such as metal-organic-framework (MOF). Based on direct atomic-scale observations, we discover a new mechanism for the <112>{111} deformation twinning in FCC structures. To form a [112]/(111) twin, for example, short ( (‾1‾11) planes within two adjacent (111) plane layers in the repeated three-layer sequence of (111) planes are shear deformed continuously by a shear-force dipole along the [112] direction like a domino effect, whereas the other (111) plane in the repeated sequence remains intact. Through this route, a small energy for twinning is expected because only 2/3 (111) planes need to be transformed to form a twin. In addition, a loading criterion for deformation twinning of a FCC NP under uniaxial compression is proposed based on our results. Our work here not only provides a fundamental understanding on deformation twinning in FCC structures, but also opens up studies of deformation behaviors in a class of Mn23Th6-type FCC materials.

Abstract:Twin boundary defects form in virtually all crystalline materials as part of their response to applied deformation or thermal stress. For nearly six decades, graphite has been used as a textbook example of twinning with illustrations showing atomically sharp interfaces between parent and twin. Using state-of-the-art high-resolution annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, we have captured atomic resolution images of graphitic twin boundaries and find that these interfaces are far more complex than previously supposed. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the presence of van der Waals bonding eliminates the requirement for an atomically sharp interface, resulting in long-range bending across multiple unit cells. We show these remarkable structures are common to other van der Waals materials, leading to extraordinary microstructures, Raman-active stacking faults, and sub-surface exfoliation within bulk crystals.

Crystal Twinning of Bicontinuous Cubic Structures

Abstract:Bicontinuous cubic structures in soft matter consist of two intertwining labyrinths separated by a partitioning layer. Combining experiments, numerical modelling and techniques in differential geometry, we investigate twinning defects in bicontinuous cubic structures. We first demonstrate that a twin boundary is most likely to occur at a plane that cuts the partitioning layer almost perpendicularly, so that the perturbation caused by twinning remains minimal. This principle can be used as a criterion to identify potential twin boundaries, as demonstrated through detailed investigations of mesoporous silica crystals characterized by diamond and gyroid surfaces. We then discuss that a twin boundary can result from a stacking fault in the arrangement of inter-lamellar attachments at an early stage of structure formation. It is further shown that enhanced curvature fluctuations near the twin boundary would cost energy because of geometrical frustration, which would be eased by a crystal distortion that is experimentally observed.

Abstract:Special boundaries subdivide grain size and change grain orientation, affecting mechanical properties of metallic materials. In this work, in-depth characterization techniques at various length scales are utilized to investigate the special boundaries (twinning boundary and interphase boundary) in dual-phase (face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed, FCC + HCP) high-entropy alloy (Fe47Mn30Co10Cr10B3). For twinning boundary, the coherent {111} boundary and the incoherent {112} boundary with 9R structure are systematically investigated. Multiple and single twin variants in FCC matrix can be observed. For interphase boundary, the coherent heterophase interface (FCC-HCP) is consistent with (111)//(0001) close-packed plane orientation, whereas, the stepped-like homophase interface (HCP-HCP) is consistent with (0001)//(10 1 ¯ 1) basal–pyramidal plane orientation. The number of HCP variants is affected by the FCC grain sizes.

Twinning in SnO2-based ceramics doped with CoO- and Nb2O5: morphology of multiple twins revealed by electron backscatter diffraction

Abstract:Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) was used for the analysis of multiple cyclic twins in cassiterite (SnO2), which form during sintering of SnO2 with small additions of CoO and Nb2O5. Grain misorientation analysis has shown that about one third of all grains contain {101} twin boundaries (TBs). The majority of these grains are contact twins, whereas a small fraction of grains are multiple, mainly cyclic twins. A procedure was developed in MTEX [Bachmann, Hielscher & Schaeben (2010). Solid State Phenom. 160, 63-88] for automated identification of crystallographically different types of cyclic twins and found two main types: coplanar twins composed of three or four domains with a common [010] axis and alternating twins composed of three to seven domains oriented along the [111] axis. Both types of cyclic twins have a characteristic common origin (nucleus) of all TBs, which is positioned eccentric relative to the grain section and the cycle is closed with a shorter non-crystallographic contact between the first and the last twin domain. The morphology of cyclic twins suggests that they form by nucleation in the initial stages of grain growth. The average size of twinned grains increases with the number of twin domains indicating the influence of TBs formation on the growth of composite grains.

Abstract:Grain boundaries (GBs), with their diversity in both structure and structural transitions, play an essential role in tailoring the properties of polycrystalline materials 1 – 5 . As a unique GB subset, {112} incoherent twin boundaries (ITBs) are ubiquitous in nanotwinned, face-centred cubic materials 6 – 9 . Although multiple ITB configurations and transitions have been reported 7 , 10 , their transition mechanisms and impacts on mechanical properties remain largely unexplored, especially in regard to covalent materials. Here we report atomic observations of six ITB configurations and structural transitions in diamond at room temperature, showing a dislocation-mediated mechanism different from metallic systems 11 , 12 . The dominant ITBs are asymmetric and less mobile, contributing strongly to continuous hardening in nanotwinned diamond 13 . The potential driving forces of ITB activities are discussed. Our findings shed new light on GB behaviour in diamond and covalent materials, pointing to a new strategy for development of high-performance, nanotwinned materials.

Abstract:We report atomic scale structural characterization of the phase separation along the twin boundary in a CoCrFeNiAl0.3 high entropy alloy on being subjected to intermediate temperature annealing after introducing sufficient dislocations by tensile deformation. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the nucleation of B2 phase is associated with the reaction between the dislocations and twin boundaries. The configuration of the B2 phase shows that two different partially coherent interfaces result in an asymmetric nucleus growing into one side of the twinning.

Abstract:The roles of grain boundaries and twin boundaries in mechanical properties are well understood for metals and alloys. However, for covalent solids, their roles in deformation response to applied stress are not established. Here we characterize the nanotwins in boron suboxide (B 6 O) with twin boundaries along the planes using both scanning transmission electron microscopy and quantum mechanics. Then, we use quantum mechanics to determine the deformation mechanism for perfect and twinned B 6 O crystals for both pure shear and biaxial shear deformations. Quantum mechanics suggests that amorphous bands nucleate preferentially at the twin boundaries in B 6 O because the twinned structure has a lower maximum shear strength by 7.5% compared with perfect structure. These results, which are supported by experimental observations of the coordinated existence of nanotwins and amorphous shear bands in B 6 O, provide a plausible atomistic explanation for the influence of nanotwins on the deformation behaviour of superhard ceramics.

Abstract:Interfacial engineering in oxide heterostructures has evolved into a thriving research field due to the presence of diverse novel physical phenomena. In this study, we grew epitaxial CuO thin films on a ZnO(0001) single crystal substrate, where the orientation relationship was CuO [110] (111) || ZnO [1120] (0001). The atomic, magnetic, and electronic structures of the CuO/ZnO interface and the CuO(001) twin boundary were studied by combining aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and first-principles calculations. The CuO/ZnO interface was found to be fully coherent and metallic, making it possible to form two-dimensional electron gas between the two semiconductors.

Abstract:Twinning is an essential deformation mode of crystals which is attracting growing attention due to its potential in simultaneously improve the strength and ductility of metals. It is generally believed that twinning is mediated by shear and atomic shuffles on an invariant twinning plane. Here, by using in situ high resolution transmission electron microscopy, we report on an extension twinning mode in rhenium nanocrystals along the (1014 ) direction on the {2021 } plane, which can be mediated by the formation of interfacial defects that fall between the parent prismatic plane and the twin pyramidal plane which are a pair of corresponding planes of the {2021 } twinning mode. The incoherent twin boundary can partly evolve into the coherent twinning plane during detwinning. The findings provide direct evidences to the {2021 } twin in hexagonal close-packed metals and corroborate the conjecture that twinning nucleation is essentially a transformation that conforms to and establishes the lattice correspondence which can be mediated by interfacial processes other than homogeneous shear on the twinning plane.

Abstract:We have investigated twin boundaries in double-lattice hexagonal close-packed metallic materials, focusing on their atomic geometry. Combining accurate ab-initio methods and large-scale atomistic simulations we address the following two fundamental questions: (i) What are the possible intrinsic twin boundary structures in hcp crystals? (ii) Are these structures stable against small distortions? In order to help end a decade-long controversy over the experimental observations of the atomic structures of twin boundaries, we have determined the energetics, spectra, and transition mechanisms of the twin boundaries. Our results confirm that the mechanical stability controls structures which are observed.

Abstract:The occurrence of deformation twinning in face-centered-cubic (fcc) crystals with medium to high stacking fault energy is normally very difficult. Through specially designing the orientation of Cu single crystal, the authors do not only observe profuse nanoscale deformation twins with a tower shape originating from grain boundary but also find some of them terminated in the interior of the grain. The observations clearly prove that the deformation twinning can nucleate through successively emitting partials from grain boundaries, indicating the ubiquity of deformation twinning even in those fcc single crystals deformed at suitable conditions.

Abstract:Twinning is profuse in bcc transition metals (TMs) except bulk W and Mo. However, W and Mo nanocrystals surprisingly exhibit twinning during room temperature compression, which is completely unexpected as established nucleation mechanisms are not viable in them. Here, we reveal the physical origin of deformation twinning in W and Mo. We employ density functional theory (DFT) and a reduced-constraint slip method to compute the stress-dependent generalized stacking fault enthalpy (GSFH), the thermodynamic quantity to be minimized under constant loading. The simple slipped structures and GSFH lines show that compressive stresses stabilize a two-layer twin embryo, which can grow rapidly via twinning disconnections with negligible energy barriers. Direct atomistic simulations unveil the explicit twinning path in agreement with the DFT GSFH lines. Furthermore, twinnability can be related to the elastic constants of a stacking fault phase (SFP). The hcp phase may serve as a candidate SFP for the {112}⟨1[over ¯]1[over ¯]1⟩ twinning system in bcc TMs and alloys, which is coincident with the {111}⟨112[over ¯]⟩ twinning in fcc structures.
