Abstract:Given a nonnegative integrable function $J$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$, we relate the asymptotic properties of the nonlocal energy functional \begin{equation*} \int_{\Omega} \int_{\Omega^c} J \bigg(\frac{x-y}{t}\bigg) \ dx dy \end{equation*} as $t \to 0^+$ with the boundary properties of a given domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n$. Then, we use these asymptotic properties to study the fluctuations of many determinantal point processes, and show that their variances measure the Minkowski dimension of $\partial \Omega$.

Local interpolation techniques for higher-order singular perturbations of non-convex functionals: free-discontinuity problems

Abstract:We develop a general approach, using local interpolation inequalities, to non-convex integral functionals depending on the gradient with a singular perturbation by derivatives of order $k\ge 2$. When applied to functionals giving rise to free-discontinuity energies, such methods permit to change boundary values for derivatives up to order $k-1$ in problems defining density functions for the jump part, thus allowing to prove optimal-profile formulas, and to deduce compactness and lower bounds. As an application, we prove that for $k$-th order perturbations of energies depending on the gradient behaving as a constant at infinity, the jump energy density is a constant $m_k$ times the $k$-th root of the jump size. The result is first proved for truncated quadratic energy densities and in the one-dimensional case, from which the general higher-dimensional case can be obtained by slicing techniques. A wide class of non-convex energies can be studied as an envelope of these particular ones. Finally, we remark that an approximation of the Mumford-Shah functional can be obtained by letting $k$ tend to infinity. We also derive a new approximation of the Blake-Zisserman functional.

Nonlocal problems with local boundary conditions I: function spaces and variational principles

Abstract:We present a systematic study on a class of nonlocal integral functionals for functions defined on a bounded domain and the naturally induced function spaces. The function spaces are equipped with a seminorm depending on finite differences weighted by a position-dependent function, which leads to heterogeneous localization on the domain boundary. We show the existence of minimizers for nonlocal variational problems with classically-defined, local boundary constraints, together with the variational convergence of these functionals to classical counterparts in the localization limit. This program necessitates a thorough study of the nonlocal space; we demonstrate properties such as a Meyers-Serrin theorem, trace inequalities, and compact embeddings, which are facilitated by new studies of boundary-localized convolution operators.

Abstract:In this paper, we devote ourselves to considering a modified zero energy critical point theory for a specific set of functionals denoted as Φ μ , defined within the confines of a uniformly convex Banach space. Integrating the nonlinear generalized Rayleigh quotient approach with Ljusternik–Schnirelman category, we establish the nonexistence and multiplicity of zero energy critical points of the involved functionals. In particular, the modified zero energy critical point theory can be applied to more nonlocal problems. Our main results improve and complement the existing results in the related literature.

Abstract:We consider the two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with point interaction and we establish a local well-posedness theory, including blow-up alternative and continuous dependence on the initial data in the energy space. We provide a proof by employing a Kato's method along with Hardy inequalities with logarithmic correction. Moreover, we establish finite time blow-up for solutions with positive energy and infinite variance.

Abstract:In this paper we characterise the minimisers of a one-parameter family of nonlocal and anisotropic energies $I_\alpha$ defined on probability measures in $\R^n$, with $n\geq 3$. The energy $I_\alpha$ consists of a purely nonlocal term of convolution type, whose interaction kernel reduces to the Coulomb potential for $\alpha=0$ and is anisotropic otherwise, and a quadratic confinement. The two-dimensional case arises in the study of defects in metals and has been solved by the authors by means of complex-analysis techniques. We prove that for $\alpha\in (-1, n-2]$, the minimiser of $I_\alpha$ is unique and is the (normalised) characteristic function of a spheroid. This result is a paradigmatic example of the role of the anisotropy of the kernel on the shape of minimisers. In particular, the phenomenon of loss of dimensionality, observed in dimension $n=2$, does not occur in higher dimension at the value $\alpha=n-2$ corresponding to the sign change of the Fourier transform of the interaction potential.

Asymptotic expansion of a nonlocal phase transition energy

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of the fractional Allen--Cahn energy functional in bounded domains with prescribed Dirichlet boundary conditions. When the fractional power $s \in (0,\frac12)$, we establish establish the first-order asymptotic development up to the boundary in the sense of $\Gamma$-convergence. In particular, we prove that the first-order term is the nonlocal minimal surface functional. Also, we show that, in general, the second-order term is not properly defined and intermediate orders may have to be taken into account. For $s \in [\frac12,1)$, we focus on the one-dimensional case and we prove that the first order term is the classical perimeter functional plus a penalization on the boundary. Towards this end, we establish existence of minimizers to a corresponding fractional energy in a half-line, which provides itself a new feature with respect to the existing literature.

Abstract:We explore the dynamical behavior and energetic properties of a model of two species that interact nonlocally on finite graphs. The authors recently introduced the model in the context of nonquadratic Finslerian gradient flows on generalized graphs featuring nonlinear mobilities. In a continuous and local setting, this class of systems exhibits a wide variety of patterns, including mixing of the two species, partial engulfment, or phase separation. This work showcases how this rich behavior carries over to the graph structure. We present analytical and numerical evidence thereof.

Abstract:We study the local asymptotic behavior of divergence-like functionals of a family of $d$-dimensional Infinitely Divisible Random Fields. Specifically, we derive limit theorems of surface integrals over Lipschitz manifolds for this class of fields when the region of integration shrinks to a single point. We show that in most cases, convergence stably in distribution holds after a proper normalization. Furthermore, the limit random fields can be described in terms of stochastic integrals with respect to a Lévy basis. We additionally discuss how our results can be used to measure the kinetic energy of a possibly turbulent flow.

Abstract:We consider the determinantal point process with the confluent hypergeometric kernel. This process is a universal point process in random matrix theory and describes the distribution of eigenvalues of large random Hermitian matrices near the Fisher-Hartwig singularity. Applying the Riemann-Hilbert method, we study the generating function of this process on any given number of intervals. It can be expressed as the Fredholm determinant of the confluent hypergeometric kernel with $n$ discontinuities. In this paper, we derive an integral representation for the determinant by using the Hamiltonian of the coupled Painlevé V system. By evaluating the total integral of the Hamiltonian, we obtain the asymptotics of the determinant as the $n$ discontinuities tend to infinity up to and including the constant term. Here the constant term is expressed in terms of the Barnes $G$-function.

Homogenization of non-local energies on disconnected sets

Abstract:We consider the problem of the homogenization of non-local quadratic energies defined on $\delta$-periodic disconnected sets defined by a double integral, depending on a kernel concentrated at scale $\varepsilon$. For kernels with unbounded support we show that we may have three regimes: (i) $\varepsilon<\!<\delta$, for which the $\Gamma$-limit even in the strong topology of $L^2$ is $0$; (ii) $\frac\varepsilon\delta\to\kappa$, in which the energies are coercive with respect to a convergence of interpolated functions, and the limit is governed by a non-local homogenization formula parameterized by $\kappa$; (iii) $\delta<\!<\varepsilon$, for which the $\Gamma$-limit is computed with respect to a coarse-grained convergence and exhibits a separation-of-scales effect; namely, it is the same as the one obtained by formally first letting $\delta\to 0$ (which turns out to be a pointwise weak limit, thanks to an iterated use of Jensen's inequality), and then, noting that the outcome is a nonlocal energy studied by Bourgain, Brezis and Mironescu, letting $\varepsilon\to0$. A slightly more complex description is necessary for case (ii) if the kernel is compactly supported.

Abstract:In this paper the study of a non-local Cahn-Hilliard-type singularly perturbed family of functionals is undertaken, generalizing known results by Alberti & Bellettini. The kernels considered include those leading to Gagliardo seminorms for fractional Sobolev spaces. The limit energy is computed via $\Gamma$-convergence and shown to be an anisotropic surface energy on the interface between the two phases.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a determinantal point process on the interval $(-s,s)$, associated with the confluent hypergeometric kernel. Let $\mathcal{K}^{(\alpha,\beta)}_s$ denote the trace class integral operator acting on $L^2(-s, s)$ with the confluent hypergeometric kernel. Our focus is on deriving the asymptotics of the Fredholm determinant $\det(I-\gamma \mathcal{K}^{(\alpha,\beta)}_s)$ as $s \to +\infty$, while simultaneously $\gamma \to 1^-$ in a super-exponential region. In this regime of double scaling limit, our asymptotic result also gives us asymptotics of the eigenvalues $\lambda^{(\alpha, \beta)}_k(s)$ of the integral operator $\mathcal{K}^{(\alpha,\beta)}_s$ as $s \to +\infty$. Based on the integrable structure of the confluent hypergeometric kernel, we derive our asymptotic results by applying the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method to analyze the related Riemann-Hilbert problem.

Abstract:We consider a class of nonconvex energy functionals that lies in the framework of the peridynamics model of continuum mechanics. The energy densities are functions of a nonlocal strain that describes deformation based on pairwise interaction of material points and as such are nonconvex with respect to nonlocal deformation. We apply variational analysis to investigate the consistency of the effective behavior of these nonlocal nonconvex functionals with established classical and peridynamic models in two different regimes. In the regime of small displacement, we show the model can be effectively described by its linearization. To be precise, we rigorously derive what is commonly called the linearized bond-based peridynamic functional as a -limit of nonlinear functionals. In the regime of vanishing nonlocality, the effective behavior of the nonlocal nonconvex functionals is characterized by an integral representation, which is obtained via -convergence with respect to the strong topology. We also prove various properties of the density of the localized quasiconvex functional such as frame-indifference and coercivity. We demonstrate that the density vanishes on matrices whose singular values are less than or equal to one. These results confirm that the localization, in the context of -convergence, of peridynamic-type energy functionals exhibits behavior quite different from classical hyperelastic energy functionals.

Abstract:We study the large-time behavior of global energy class solutions of the one dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a general localized potential term and a defocusing nonlinear term. By using a new type of interaction Morawetz estimate localized to an exterior region, we prove that these solutions decompose into a free wave and a weakly localized part which is asymptotically orthogonal to any fixed free wave. We further show that the $L^2$ norm of this weakly localized part is concentrated in the region $|x| \leq t^{1/2+}$, and that the energy ($\dot{H}^1$) norm is concentrated in $|x| \leq t^{1/3+}$.
