Abstract:Since the seminal studies of Thomas and Fermi, researchers in the Density-Functional Theory (DFT) community are searching for accurate electron density functionals. Arguably, the toughest functional to approximate is the noninteracting kinetic energy, Ts[ρ], the subject of this work. The typical paradigm is to first approximate the energy functional and then take its functional derivative, δTs[ρ]δρ(r), yielding a potential that can be used in orbital-free DFT or subsystem DFT simulations. Here, this paradigm is challenged by constructing the potential from the second-functional derivative via functional integration. A new nonlocal functional for Ts[ρ] is prescribed [which we dub Mi-Genova-Pavanello (MGP)] having a density independent kernel. MGP is constructed to satisfy three exact conditions: (1) a nonzero "Kinetic electron" arising from a nonzero exchange hole; (2) the second functional derivative must reduce to the inverse Lindhard function in the limit of homogenous densities; (3) the potential is derived from functional integration of the second functional derivative. Pilot calculations show that MGP is capable of reproducing accurate equilibrium volumes, bulk moduli, total energy, and electron densities for metallic (body-centered cubic, face-centered cubic) and semiconducting (crystal diamond) phases of silicon as well as of III-V semiconductors. The MGP functional is found to be numerically stable typically reaching self-consistency within 12 iterations of a truncated Newton minimization algorithm. MGP's computational cost and memory requirements are low and comparable to the Wang-Teter nonlocal functional or any generalized gradient approximation functional.

Abstract:There is a number of explicit kinetic energy density functionals for noninteracting electron systems that are obtained in terms of the electron density and its derivatives. These semilocal functionals have been widely used in the literature. In this work, we present a comparative study of the kinetic energy density of these semilocal functionals, stressing the importance of the local behavior to assess the quality of the functionals. We propose a quality factor that measures the local differences between the usual orbital-based kinetic energy density distributions and the approximated ones, allowing us to ensure if the good results obtained for the total kinetic energies with these semilocal functionals are due to their correct local performance or to error cancellations. We have also included contributions coming from the Laplacian of the electron density to work with an infinite set of kinetic energy densities. For all but one of the functionals, we have found that their success in the evaluation of the total kinetic energy is due to global error cancellations, whereas the local behavior of their kinetic energy density becomes worse than that corresponding to the Thomas-Fermi functional.

Abstract:Practical density functional theory (DFT) owes its success to the groundbreaking work of Kohn and Sham that introduced the exact calculation of the non-interacting kinetic energy of the electrons using an auxiliary mean-field system. However, the full power of DFT will not be unleashed until the exact relationship between the electron density and the non-interacting kinetic energy is found. Various attempts have been made to approximate this functional, similar to the exchange--correlation functional, with much less success due to the larger contribution of kinetic energy and its more non-local nature. In this work we propose a new and efficient regularization method to train density functionals based on deep neural networks, with particular interest in the kinetic-energy functional. The method is tested on (effectively) one-dimensional systems, including the hydrogen chain, non-interacting electrons, and atoms of the first two periods, with excellent results. For the atomic systems, the generalizability of the regularization method is demonstrated by training also an exchange--correlation functional, and the contrasting nature of the two functionals is discussed from a machine-learning perspective.

Abstract:A kinetic-energy functional of the electronic density is presented. This functional is based on an integral form and is correct through second order in the response. The formulas are compared numerically with the Thomas–Fermi–von Weizsäcker–like formulas and favorable results are found. These formulas correctly give both shell structures in the electron densities of atoms and bond charges in the electron densities of solids. This quantum oscillation in the electron density is lacking in the densities of previous kinetic-energy functionals and is regarded as the major achievement of the current approach.

Abstract:We present a kinetic-energy density-functional theory and the corresponding kinetic-energy Kohn-Sham (keKS) scheme on a lattice and show that, by including more observables explicitly in a density-functional approach, already simple approximation strategies lead to very accurate results. Here, we promote the kinetic-energy density to a fundamental variable alongside the density and show for specific cases (analytically and numerically) that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the external pair of on-site potential and site-dependent hopping and the internal pair of density and kinetic-energy density. On the basis of this mapping, we establish two unknown effective fields, the mean-field exchange-correlation potential and the mean-field exchange-correlation hopping, which force the keKS system to generate the same kinetic-energy density and density as the fully interacting one. We show, by a decomposition based on the equations of motions for the density and the kinetic-energy density, that we can construct simple orbital-dependent functionals that outperform the corresponding exact-exchange Kohn-Sham (KS) approximation of standard density-functional theory. We do so by considering the exact KS and keKS systems and comparing the unknown correlation contributions as well as by comparing self-consistent calculations based on the mean-field exchange (for the effective potential) and a uniform (for the effective hopping) approximation for the keKS and the exact-exchange approximation for the KS system, respectively.

Abstract:The exact form of the kinetic energy functional has remained elusive in orbital-free models of density functional theory (DFT). This has been the main stumbling block for the development of a general-purpose framework on this basis. Here, we show that on the basis of a two-density model, which represents many-electron systems by mass density and spin density components, we can derive the exact form of such a functional. The exact functional is shown to contain previously suggested functionals to some extent, with the notable exception of the Thomas-Fermi kinetic energy functional.

Abstract:An accurate expression of the kinetic energy density of an electronic distribution in terms of the single particle reduced density matrix for atomic and molecular systems is a long-standing problem in electron structure theory. Existing kinetic energy density functionals are generally expressed as modifications over kinetic energy of homogeneous electron gas and/or von Weizsäcker kinetic energy. A large class of these functionals also require empirical parametrizations to make accurate predictions of the kinetic energy for atomic and molecular systems restricting their transferability. Moreover, the correct kinetic energy density which produces accurate local properties such as atomic shell structure is still an unsolved problem. In this work, we have developed an exact methodology that can be used to derive the kinetic energy of an electronic system of arbitrary spin multiplicity. One of the attractive features of this present analytical formalism is the possibility of systematic improvement of the kinetic energy by virtue of a novel perturbation series. Applying this methodology to simple model systems such as one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator and homogeneous electron gas produces a qualitatively correct $N$-dependence of kinetic energy as a result. A one-to-one correspondence between our formalism to the traditional Green's function formalism is also demonstrated.

Developing Orbital-Dependent Corrections for the Non-Additive Kinetic Energy in Subsystem Density Functional Theory

Abstract:We present a novel route to constructing cost-efficient semi-empirical approximations for the non-additive kinetic energy in subsystem density functional theory. The developed methodology is based on the use of Slater determinants composed of non-orthogonal Kohn$\unicode{x2013}$Sham-like orbitals for the evaluation of kinetic energy expectation values and the expansion of the inverse molecular-orbital overlap matrix into a Neumann series. Applying these techniques, we derived and implemented a series of orbital-dependent approximations for the non-additive kinetic energy, which are employed self-consistently. Our proof-of-principle computations demonstrated quantitatively correct results for potential energy curves and electron densities and hinted on the applicability of the introduced empirical parameters to different types of molecular systems and intermolecular interactions. We therefore conclude that the presented study is an important step towards constructing accurate and efficient orbital-dependent approximations for the non-additive kinetic energy applicable to large molecular systems.

A General and Transferable Local Hybrid Functional for Electronic Structure Theory and Many-Fermion Approaches

Abstract:Density functional theory has become the workhorse of quantum physics, chemistry, and materials science. Within these fields, a broad range of applications needs to be covered. These applications range from solids to molecular systems, from organic to inorganic chemistry, or even from electrons to other fermions such as protons or muons. This is emphasized by the plethora of density functional approximations that have been developed for various cases. In this work, a new local hybrid exchange-correlation density functional is constructed from first principles, promoting generality and transferability. We show that constraint satisfaction can be achieved even for admixtures with full exact exchange, without sacrificing accuracy. The performance of the new functional for electronic structure theory is assessed for thermochemical properties, excitation energies, Mössbauer isomer shifts, NMR spin--spin coupling constants, NMR shieldings and shifts, magnetizabilities, as well as EPR hyperfine coupling constants. Here, the new density functional shows excellent performance throughout all tests and is numerically robust only requiring small grids for converged results. Additionally, the functional can be easily generalized to arbitrary fermions as shown for electron-proton correlation energies. Therefore, we outline that density functionals generated in this way are general purpose tools for quantum mechanical studies.

Nonlocal vs Local Pseudopotentials Affect Kinetic Energy Kernels in Orbital-Free DFT

Abstract:The kinetic energy (KE) kernel, which is defined as the second order functional derivative of the KE functional with respect to density, is the key ingredient to the construction of KE models for orbital free density functional theory (OFDFT) applications. For solids, the KE kernel is usually approximated using the uniform electron gas (UEG) model or the UEG-with-gap model. These kernels do not have information about the effects from the core electrons since there are no orbitals for the projection on nonlocal pseudopotentials. To illuminate this aspect, we provide a methodology for computing the KE kernel from Kohn-Sham DFT and apply it to the valence electrons in bulk aluminum (Al) with a face-centered cubic lattice and in bulk silicon (Si) in a semiconducting crystal diamond state. We find that bulk-derived local pseudopotentials provide accurate results for the KE kernel in the interstitial region. The effect of using nonlocal pseudopotentials manifests at short wavelengths, defined by the diameter of an ion surrounded by its core electrons. Specifically, we find that the utilization of nonlocal pseudopotentials leads to significant deviations in the KE kernel from the von Weizsacker result in this region, which is, as a rule, explicitly enforced in most widely used KE functional approximations for OFDFT simulations.

Abstract:We introduce a new functional for simulating ground-state and time-dependent electronic systems within density-functional theory. The functional combines an expression for the exact Kohn-Sham (KS) potential in the limit of complete electron localization with a measure of the actual localization. We find accurate self-consistent charge densities, even for systems where the exact exchange-correlation potential exhibits non-local dependence on the density, such as potential steps. We compare our results to the exact KS potential for each system. The self-interaction correction is accurately described, avoiding the need for orbital-dependent potentials.

Abstract:The density functional theory is one of the most efficient and promising methods of quantum physics and chemistry. It is a theory of electronic structure formulated in terms of the electron density as the basic unknown function instead of the electron wave function. According to the fundamental theorems of Hohenberg and Kohn, the electron density carries all the information one might need to determine any property of the electron system. However, the way of obtaining it, is not at all trivial. In this report, the recent advances are summarized. After a review of the Hohenberg–Kohn theorems, the method of constrained search and the Kohn–Sham scheme, exact theorems, relations and inequalities are discussed. There are several important concepts of chemistry (e.g. electronegativity, hardness, softness) that have recently obtained a firm foundation in the density functional theory. The optimized potential method and the methods that generate the potential from the electron density are reviewed. The local and nonlocal approximate functionals are compared. Extensions of the ground-state density functional theory (excited states, time-dependent, relativistic and finite temperature) are summarized. A review of the applications to atoms and molecules is presented.

Abstract:The proper description of step structures in the exchange correlation potential, of charge localization, and a reasonable prediction of band gaps have been long-standing, serious challenges for semilocal density functionals. In practice, obtaining all of these properties from the functional derivative of an energy functional was possible only at the price of incorporating exact exchange. We here show that they can be achieved at significantly lower, semilocal computational expense by using kinetic-energy density-dependent functionals. The key to obtaining these features is a functional construction strategy that focuses on the derivative discontinuity and the density response.
1D Kinetic Energy Density Functionals learned with Symbolic Regression

Abstract:Orbital-free density functional theory promises to deliver linear-scaling electronic structure calculations. This requires the knowledge of the non-interacting kinetic-energy density functional (KEDF), which should be accurate and must admit accurate functional derivatives, so that a minimization procedure can be designed. In this work, symbolic regression is explored as an alternative means to machine-learn the KEDF, which results into analytical expressions, whose functional derivatives are easy to compute. The so-determined semi-local functional forms are investigated as a function of the electron number, and we are able to track the transition from the von Weizsäcker functional, exact for the one-electron case, to the Thomas-Fermi functional, exact in the homogeneous electron gas limit. A number of separate searches are performed, ranging from totally unconstrained to constrained in the form of an enhancement factor. This work highlights the complexity in constructing semi-local approximations of the KEDF and the potential of symbolic regression to advance the search.

Abstract:International Journal of Modern Physics E, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we have developed relativistic and nonrelativistic energy density functionals within the local density approximation, transitioning from momentum space to coordinate space. Utilizing the Coherent Density Fluctuation Model, these functionals predict shell and sub-shell closures across isotopic and isotonic chains. Our focus has been on refining fitting procedures and testing these functionals on selected nuclei. Previously, we compared our energy density functionals for E-RMF forces G3 and IOPB-I with the Brückner energy density functional. Our results highlighted significant advantages, particularly in accurately predicting peaks in the symmetry energy curve at magic neutron numbers within heavy and superheavy regions. This success motivates us to extend our fitting procedure for both the relativistic mean field (E-RMF) and nonrelativistic Skyrme–Hartree–Fock (SHF) parameter sets. To further ensure the reliability of our newly fitted functionals, we establish Pearson-type correlations between the symmetry energy and its derivatives.

Analytical Energy Gradient Evaluation in Relativistic and Nonrelativistic Density Functional Calculations

Abstract:The expressions of analytical energy gradients in density functional theory and their implementation in programs are reported. The evaluation of analytical energy gradients can be carried out in the fully 4-component relativistic, approximate relativistic, and nonrelativistic density functional calculations under local density approximation or general gradient approximation with or without frozen core approximation using different basis sets in our programs. The translational invariance condition and the fact that the one-center terms do not contribute to the energy gradients are utilized to improve the calculation accuracy and to reduce the computational effort. The calculated results of energy gradients and optimized geometry as well as atomization energies of some molecules by the analytical gradient method are in very good agreement with results obtained by the numerical derivative method.

Abstract:Kohn–Sham density functional theory has been the most popular method in electronic structure calculations. To fulfill the increasing accuracy requirements, new approximate functionals are needed to address key issues in existing approximations. It is well known that nonlocal components are crucial. Current nonlocal functionals mostly require orbital dependence such as in Hartree–Fock exchange and many-body perturbation correlation energy, which, however, leads to higher computational costs. Deviating from this pathway, we describe functional nonlocality in a new approach. By partitioning the total density to atom-centered local densities, a many-body expansion is proposed. This many-body expansion can be truncated at one-body contributions, if a base functional is used and an energy correction is approximated. The contribution from each atom-centered local density is a single finite-range nonlocal functional that is universal for all atoms. We then use machine learning to develop this universal atom-centered functional. Parameters in this functional are determined by fitting to data that are produced by high-level theories. Extensive tests on several different test sets, which include reaction energies, reaction barrier heights, and non-covalent interaction energies, show that the new functional, with only the density as the basic variable, can produce results comparable to the best-performing double-hybrid functionals, (for example, for the thermochemistry test set selected from the GMTKN55 database, BLYP based machine learning functional gives a weighted total mean absolute deviations of 3.33 kcal/mol, while DSD-BLYP-D3(BJ) gives 3.28 kcal/mol) with a lower computational cost. This opens a new pathway to nonlocal functional development and applications.

Efficient treatment of local meta-generalized gradient density functionals via auxiliary density expansion: the density fitting (DF) J+X approximation

Abstract:We report an efficient technique to treat density functionals of the meta-generalized gradient approximation (mGGA) class in conjunction with density fitting of Coulomb terms (DF-J) and exchange-correlation terms (DF-X). While the kinetic energy density $\tau$ cannot be computed in the context of a DF-JX calculation, we show that the Laplacian of the density $\upsilon$ can be computed with almost no extra cost. With this technique, $\upsilon$-form mGGAs become only slightly more expensive (10%--20%) than GGAs in DF-JX treatment---and several times faster than regular $\tau$-based mGGA calculations with DF-J and regular treatment of the density functional. We investigate the translation of $\upsilon$-form mGGAs into $\tau$-form mGGAs by employing a kinetic energy functional, but find this insufficiently reliable at this moment. However, $\upsilon$ and $\tau$ are believed to carry essentially equivalent information beyond $\rho$ and $\Vert\vec\nabla\rho\Vert$ [Phys. Rev. B 2007, 75, 155109], so a reparametrization of accurate mGGAs from the $\tau$-form into the $\upsilon$-form should be possible. Once such functionals become available, we expect the presented technique to become a powerful tool in the computation of reaction paths, intermediates, and transition states of medium sized molecules.

Approximate Functionals for Multistate Density Functional Theory

Abstract:Recently Lu and Gao [J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 13, 33, 7762-7769 (2022)] published a new, rigorous density functional theory for excited states and proved that the projection of the kinetic and electron repulsion operators into the subspace of the lowest electronic states are a universal functional of the matrix density D(r). This is the first attempt to find an approximation to the multistate universal functional F[D(r)]. It is shown that F (i) does not explicitly depend on the number of electronic states and (ii) is an analytic matrix functional. The Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-von Weizsäcker model and the correlation energy of the homogeneous electron gas are turned into matrix functionals guided by two principles: That each matrix functional should transform properly under basis set transformations, and that the ground state functional should be recovered for a single electronic state. Lieb-Oxford-like bounds on the average kinetic and electron repulsion energies in the subspace are given. When evaluated on the numerically exact matrix density of LiF, this simple approximation reproduces the matrix elements of the Hamiltonian in the basis of the exact eigenstates accurately for all bond lengths. In particular the off-diagonal elements of the effective Hamiltonian that come from the interactions of different electronic states can be calculated with the same or better accuracy than the diagonal elements. Unsurprisingly, the largest error comes from the kinetic energy functional. More exact conditions that constrain the functional form of F are needed to go beyond the local density approximation.
