Abstract:Graphene is an atomically thin, two-dimensional allotrope of carbon with excellent chemical, mechanical, and electronic properties. Recent studies have revealed that using graphene or modified graphene as a catalyst support or metal-free catalyst can result in significant improvement in the catalytic activity, selectivity, reusability and tolerance due to the unique structure of graphene. This review summarized the recent progress on the pre-paration of the graphene-based catalysts and their application in traditional chemical reactions, electrochemical reactions and photochemical catalysis. The perspectives of achieving graphene-based catalysts with high catalytic performance have also been included.

Abstract:Monolayer graphene is a two-dimensional material with fascinating electrical and optical properties that has brought great possibilities and challenges to chemists. The possibilities include the many applications in which graphene could be exploited, and the challenges involve optimizing synthetic strategies and manipulating the structure and properties so that graphene can be used in those applications. Here, we cover a portion of the recent progress toward using chemical techniques to render graphene available for incorporation into electronic and optical devices. With top-down and bottom-up strategies, the geometry and thickness of graphene have been well-tuned. The methods for producing structure-doped materials, such as nitrogen doping and h-BNC hybrid structures, are discussed along with the properties of those doped materials. Finally, covalent functionalization of graphene's surfaces and edges, such as hydrogenation and the diazonium and azide reactions, will be discussed as they have become powerful tools to modify the properties of graphene.

Abstract:As a two-dimensional (2D) giant polycyclic aromatic molecule, graphene provides a great opportunity for studying the behaviors of chemical reactions in two dimensions. However, the chemistry of graphene is challenging because of its extreme inertness due to the highly delocalized pi electron system. Recently, photogenerated free radicals have been demonstrated to effectively activate the chemical reactions of graphene. Such kinds of graphene photochemistry provide a new route for the covalent functionalization and band structure engineering of zero-gap graphene. In this chapter, the graphene photochemistry based on photogenerated free radicals is reviewed, including photohalogenation, photoarylation, photoalkylation, and photocatalytic oxidation. Although most photochemical reactions on graphene can be inspired by its small organic analogues, graphene photochemistry is of particular attraction due to its infinite 2D geometry, which offers a platform for studying geometry-correlated covalent chemistry, including single-and double-sided covalent addition reactions, asymmetric chemistry on two faces of monolayer graphene, edge-selective chemistry, and interlayer coupling-dependent few-layer graphene chemistry. In addition to the modulation of surface properties and the band structure engineering, new 2D derivatives and superlattices with fascinating features beyond mother graphene can be built by graphene photochemistry, which greatly expands the graphene family and its attraction. This chapter also summarizes the potential applications of graphene photochemistry with a specific focus being laid on the general consideration and understanding of graphene photochemistry towards electronic/optoelectronic devices and materials science. At the end, a brief discussion on the future directions, challenges, and opportunities in this emerging area is provided.

Abstract:Although graphene is extremely inert in chemistry because of the giant delocalized π electron system, various methods have been developed to achieve its efficient chemical modification. Covalent chemistry is effective to modulate the physical properties of graphene. By converting the sp(2) hybridized carbon atoms to sp(3) ones, new two-dimensional (2D) materials and 2D superlattices with fascinating features beyond mother graphene could be built from the graphene scaffold, greatly expanding the graphene family and its attraction. In this Perspective, the power of covalent chemistry is demonstrated from the viewpoint of tailoring graphene's energy band structure as well as creating new 2D materials and 2D superlattices. A specific focus is laid on the general consideration and understanding of covalent graphene chemistry toward electronic devices and material science.

Abstract:The chemical production of graphene as well as its controlled wet- chemical modification is a challenge for synthetic chemists and the characterization of reaction products requires sophisticated analytic methods. In this review we first describe the structure of graphene and graphene oxide. We then outline the most important synthetic methods which are used for the production of these carbon based nanomaterials. We summarize the state-of-the-art for their chemical functionalization by non-covalent and covalent approaches. We put special emphasis on the differentiation of the terms graphite, graphene, graphite oxide and graphene oxide. An improved fundamental knowledge about the structure and the chemical properties of graphene and graphene oxide is an important prerequisite for the development of practical applications.

Abstract:Geim and Novoselov were jointly awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics ‘‘for groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene’’. Currently, graphene is one of the most representative low-dimensional materials and shows particular electronic, optical, mechanical and chemical properties, among others, which have found application in several scientific and technological areas. The graphene family has gained the attention of an increasing number of researchers working in different areas, from composites to molecular electronics. Thus, many promising applications based on graphene are being developed currently. Several themed issues and monographs focusing on this research space have been published. This themed issue of Chemical Society Reviews incorporates both critical and tutorial reviews and aims at providing an overview of recent developments in the expanding field of graphene chemistry. Thus, the issue covers a panorama of the latest progress related to different aspects of graphene species, ranging from theory, chemical functionalization, electron transfer chemistry and catalysis, to graphene composite materials, ‘‘graphene-on-surface’’ structures, 2D heterostructures, graphene derivatives and biomedical applications. Moreover, it has a differential character of major importance regarding previous collections: each review is written by authors from two or more research groups, who have been able to share and to contrast their particular experiences in a joint paper. The tutorial review by Roldan, Guinea and colleagues (DOI: 10.1039/C7CS00210F) presents an overview of the basic theoretical aspects of two-dimensional (2D) crystals. The authors revise not only the essential aspects of graphene but also the new families of semiconducting 2D materials, like transition metal dichalcogenides or black phosphorus. Additionally, some of the exciting new possibilities offered by 2D crystals are discussed, such as manipulation and control of quantum degrees of freedom (spin and pseudospin), confinement of excitons, or unconventional superconducting phases. The joint work of five research groups, namely, the teams of Guldi, Hirsch, Martı́n, D’Souza and Torres (DOI: 10.1039/ C7CS00229G) is dedicated to graphenebased materials (GBMs). Abstract:Graphene has stimulated enormous interest due to its intriguing structure and fascinating properties. The extremely high carrier mobility, mechanical flexibility, and optical transparency as well as the versatility for band structure engineering make graphene a promising candidate for next-generation carbon-based electronic devices. Graphene chemistry, the covalent functionalization of graphene as a 2D giant molecule, offers a promising direction to controllably tailor its properties through the introduction of various chemical decorations. One of the great challenges for graphene functionalization originates from its strong chemical stability, thus highly reactive chemical species are needed as the reactants. In recent years, novel photochemical approaches have been developed to achieve efficient graphene modification and bandgap modulation, following a general concept of Photochemical Bandgap Engineering of Graphene. In this article, such kinds of photochemical graphene engineering are demonstrated, together with a brief discussion on the future directions, challenges, and opportunities in this fascinating research area.

Abstract:Atomically thin crystals have recently been the focus of attention in particular after the synthesis of graphene, a monolayer hexagonal crystal structure of carbon. In this novel material class the chemically derived graphenes have attracted tremendous interest. It was shown that although bulk graphite is a chemically inert material, the surface of single layer graphene is rather reactive against individual atoms. So far, synthesis of several graphene derivatives have been reported such as hydrogenated graphene "graphane" (CH), fluorographene (CF) and chlorographene (CCl). Moreover, the stability of bromine and iodine covered graphene were predicted using computational tools. Among these derivatives, easy synthesis, insulating electronic behavior and reversibly tunable crystal structure of graphane make this material special for future ultra-thin device applications. This overview, surveys structural, electronic, magnetic, vibrational and mechanical properties of graphane. We also present a detailed overview of research efforts devoted to the computational modeling of graphane and its derivatives. Furthermore recent progress in synthesis techniques and possible applications of graphane are reviewed as well.

Abstract:Graphene is the basic building block of 0D fullerene, 1D carbon nanotubes, and 3D graphite. Graphene has a unique planar structure, as well as novel electronic properties, which have attracted great interests from scientists. This review selectively analyzes current advances in the field of graphene bioapplications. In particular, the biofunctionalization of graphene for biological applications, fluorescence-resonance-energy-transfer-based biosensor development by using graphene or graphene-based nanomaterials, and the investigation of graphene or graphene-based nanomaterials for living cell studies are summarized in more detail. Future perspectives and possible challenges in this rapidly developing area are also discussed.

Chemical Modification of Graphene and Its Applications

Abstract:Graphene, a two-dimensional crystalline monolayer made of sp(2)-hybridized carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice, holds a set of remarkable electronic and physical properties, such as ballistic transport with low resistivity, high chemical stability, and high mechanical strength. By taking advantage of these, in recent years our research group has performed a series of studies for modifying the surfaces of graphene and tuning its properties. These studies can be mainly divided into two categories. First, we opened graphene's band gap to some extent through covalent and/or noncovalent chemical modifications, and installed sensing functions into graphene. In detail, we grafted nitrophenyl group onto graphene through an electrochemical method and methyl group onto graphene by plasma treatment to open its band gap. Also, we assembled lead sulfide or titanium dioxide onto graphene through electron beam evaporation to achieve optical or gas sensing. A rotaxane molecule with a bistable structure was also assembled onto graphene through pi-pi stacking to obtain optical switches with logic capability. On the other hand, we also fabricated graphene-based nanoelectrodes for making a new-generation molecular electronic devices with diverse functionalities. In detail, we cut graphene using electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching to obtain graphene electrodes. Poly(3-hexyl thiophene) or copper phthalocyanine was spin-coated onto these electrodes to achieve field effect transistors with the high carrier mobility and photoresponsive property. We further developed graphene nanoelectrodes by dash-line lithography, and molecular bridges with different functions were connected between these nanoelectrodes. These single molecule devices can switch their conductance upon exposure to external stimuli, such as metal ion, pH and light. Looking into the future, graphene, as a representative of carbon-based nanomaterials, will continue to play an important role in the area of nano/molecular electronics.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) that are flat 0D nanomaterials have attracted increasing interest because of their exceptional chemicophysical properties and novel applications in energy conversion and storage, electro/photo/chemical catalysis, flexible devices, sensing, display, imaging, and theranostics. The significant advances in the recent years are summarized with comparative and balanced discussion. The differences between GQDs and other nanomaterials, including their nanocarbon cousins, are emphasized, and the unique advantages of GQDs for specific applications are highlighted. The current challenges and outlook of this growing field are also discussed.

Abstract:Chemical functionalisation is one of the most active areas of graphene research, motivated by fundamental science, the opportunities to adjust or supplement intrinsic properties, and the need to assemble materials for a broad array of applications. Historically, the primary consideration has been the degree of functionalisation but there is growing interest in understanding how and where modification occurs. Reactions may proceed preferentially at edges, defects, or on graphitic faces; they may be correlated, uncorrelated, or anti-correlated with previously grafted sites. A detailed collation of existing literature data indicates that steric effects play a strong role in limiting the extent of reaction. However, the pattern of functionalisation may have important effects on the resulting properties. This article addresses the unifying principles of current graphene functionalisation technologies, with emphasis on understanding and controlling the locus of functionalisation.

Abstract:Graphene is the ultimately monolayer material with single-atom thickness. It possesses many fascinating properties including massless Dirac electronic structure, anomalous quantum Hall effects, high mobility, extraordinary high thermal conductivity, stiffness and strength (see other chapters in this book). Impressively, these properties have remarkable dependence on its morphology and atomic structure, e.g. its size and shape (Fig. 1, Xu & Buehler, 2010a). Moreover, interior and exterior doping effects from defects, molecular adsorptions or electromagnetic fields are also significant. For example, hydrogenation, oxidation and electrical field significantly tune its structural, mechanical, thermal, electronic and optical structures, which is controllable and even reversible. These sensitive responses of a graphene sheet to structural and environmental cues enable us opportunities to engineer its physical and chemical properties at nanoscale.

Abstract:Functionalization and dispersion of graphene sheets are of crucial importance for their end applications. Chemical functionalization of graphene enables this material to be processed by solvent-assisted techniques, such as layer-by-layer assembly, spin-coating, and filtration. It also prevents the agglomeration of single layer graphene during reduction and maintains the inherent properties of graphene. Therefore, a detailed review on the advances of chemical functionalization of graphene is presented. Synthesis and characterization of graphene have also been reviewed in the current article. The functionalization of graphene can be performed by covalent and noncovalent modification techniques. In both cases, surface modification of graphene oxide followed by reduction has been carried out to obtain functionalized graphene. It has been found that both the covalent and noncovalent modification techniques are very effective in the preparation of processable graphene. However, the electrical conductivity of the functionalized graphene has been observed to decrease significantly compared to pure graphene. Moreover, the surface area of the functionalized graphene prepared by covalent and non-covalent techniques decreases significantly due to the destructive chemical oxidation of flake graphite followed by sonication, functionalization and chemical reduction. In order to overcome these problems, several studies have been reported on the preparation of functionalized graphene directly from graphite (one-step process). In all these cases, surface modification of graphene can prevent agglomeration and facilitates the formation of stable dispersions. Surface modified graphene can be used for the fabrication of polymer nanocomposites, super-capacitor devices, drug delivery system, solar cells, memory devices, transistor device, biosensor, etc.

Challenges and Opportunities in Chemistry of Graphene Analogues

Abstract:Graphene analogues can provide promising opportunities to satisfy peoples requirement of transparent portable nanodevices because of their ultrathin thickness, huge specific surface area and high flexibility. Expanding the study area of graphene analogues with a nonlayered structure or quasi-layered structure with relatively strong bonds between the layers will not only enrich the family of two dimensional crystals with atomic thickness, but also bring us unprecedented excellent properties and wide applications. However, because of the lack of long-range order in the third dimensionality, the characterization of these low-dimensional structures and the understanding of their clear structure-property relationship encounter many great difficulties. In this review, we focus on the recent advances in synthetic strategies for graphene analogues with the layered structure, nonlayered structure as well as the quasi-layered structure with relatively strong bonds between the layers. And we survey the recent progresses in fine structure and defects characterization of the ultrathin two dimensional crystals, and furthermore overview the methods for modulation of their electronic structures. In addition, the structure-property relationship, transparent and flexible device construction as well as wide applications in photoelectrochemical water splitting, photodetectors, thermoelectric conversion, touchless moisture sensing and supercapacitors of the graphene analogues were also highlighted. It is anticipated that the present review will deepen peoples understanding of this field and hence contribute to guide the future design of high-efficiency energy-related devices.
