Abstract:Graphene is an atomically thin, two-dimensional allotrope of carbon with excellent chemical, mechanical, and electronic properties. Recent studies have revealed that using graphene or modified graphene as a catalyst support or metal-free catalyst can result in significant improvement in the catalytic activity, selectivity, reusability and tolerance due to the unique structure of graphene. This review summarized the recent progress on the pre-paration of the graphene-based catalysts and their application in traditional chemical reactions, electrochemical reactions and photochemical catalysis. The perspectives of achieving graphene-based catalysts with high catalytic performance have also been included.

Abstract:Monolayer graphene is a two-dimensional material with fascinating electrical and optical properties that has brought great possibilities and challenges to chemists. The possibilities include the many applications in which graphene could be exploited, and the challenges involve optimizing synthetic strategies and manipulating the structure and properties so that graphene can be used in those applications. Here, we cover a portion of the recent progress toward using chemical techniques to render graphene available for incorporation into electronic and optical devices. With top-down and bottom-up strategies, the geometry and thickness of graphene have been well-tuned. The methods for producing structure-doped materials, such as nitrogen doping and h-BNC hybrid structures, are discussed along with the properties of those doped materials. Finally, covalent functionalization of graphene's surfaces and edges, such as hydrogenation and the diazonium and azide reactions, will be discussed as they have become powerful tools to modify the properties of graphene.

Abstract:Carbon has an amazing number of different atomic configurations. Apart from the crystalline forms of diamond and graphite, we are now familiar with the cage structures of the fullerenes [1], the elongated carbon nanotubes [2], and the two-dimensional sheets of graphene [3], and each of these forms has led to a wealth of scientific discoveries and a range of applications. In a paper in Physical Review Letters, Chuanhong Jin, Kazu Suenaga and Sumio Iijima at NIAIST in Tsukuba, Japan, and Haiping Lan and Lianmao Peng at Peking University in China show that with a high-energy electron beam, they can transform graphite into graphene, and further into separate strings of carbon atoms [4]. There have been only scarce reports on carbon atom chains, and their new approach adds an avenue to produce new all-carbon electronic nanostructures.

Abstract:Although graphene is extremely inert in chemistry because of the giant delocalized π electron system, various methods have been developed to achieve its efficient chemical modification. Covalent chemistry is effective to modulate the physical properties of graphene. By converting the sp(2) hybridized carbon atoms to sp(3) ones, new two-dimensional (2D) materials and 2D superlattices with fascinating features beyond mother graphene could be built from the graphene scaffold, greatly expanding the graphene family and its attraction. In this Perspective, the power of covalent chemistry is demonstrated from the viewpoint of tailoring graphene's energy band structure as well as creating new 2D materials and 2D superlattices. A specific focus is laid on the general consideration and understanding of covalent graphene chemistry toward electronic devices and material science.

Abstract:Graphene, as the fundamental 2D carbon structure with exceptionally high crystal and electronic quality, has emerged as a rapidly rising star in the field of material science. Its sudden discovery in 2004 led to an explosion of interest in the study of graphene with respect to its unique physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, opening up a new research area for materials science and condensed-matter physics, and aiming for wide-ranging and diversified technological applications. In this critical review, we will describe recent advances in the development of graphene-based materials from the standpoint of electrochemistry. To begin with, electron transfer properties of graphene will be discussed, involving its unusual electronic structure, extraordinary electronic properties and fascinating electron transport. The next major section deals with the exciting progress related to graphene-based materials in electrochemistry since 2004, including electrochemical sensing, electrochemiluminescence, electrocatalysis, electrochemical energy conversion and FET devices. Finally, prospects and further developments in this exciting field of graphene-based materials are also suggested (224 references).

Abstract:Atomically thin crystals have recently been the focus of attention in particular after the synthesis of graphene, a monolayer hexagonal crystal structure of carbon. In this novel material class the chemically derived graphenes have attracted tremendous interest. It was shown that although bulk graphite is a chemically inert material, the surface of single layer graphene is rather reactive against individual atoms. So far, synthesis of several graphene derivatives have been reported such as hydrogenated graphene "graphane" (CH), fluorographene (CF) and chlorographene (CCl). Moreover, the stability of bromine and iodine covered graphene were predicted using computational tools. Among these derivatives, easy synthesis, insulating electronic behavior and reversibly tunable crystal structure of graphane make this material special for future ultra-thin device applications. This overview, surveys structural, electronic, magnetic, vibrational and mechanical properties of graphane. We also present a detailed overview of research efforts devoted to the computational modeling of graphane and its derivatives. Furthermore recent progress in synthesis techniques and possible applications of graphane are reviewed as well.

Abstract:Graphene,a one-atom-thick and two-dimensional(2D) planar sheet of sp2-bonded carbon atoms that are densely packed in a honeycomb crystal lattice,has been a subject of extensive academic and commercial interest for potential use as the active materials in the fields of materials science,chemistry,physics and engineering due to its outstanding electronic,photonic,thermal and mechanical properties.It can be wrapped up into 0D fullerenes,rolled into 1D nanotubes or stacked into 3D graphite.In this paper the important aspects of graphenes,including preparation methods,chemical modification and potential applications,have been highlighted in detail.Basically graphenes can be prepared by micromechanical exfoliation,epitaxial growth on electrically insulating surfaces such as SiC,chemical vapor deposition,chemical synthesis and the creation of colloidal suspensions.By covalent or,non-covalent modification of graphenes,a large number of the intersting and promising functional materials have been prepared.Many challenges still remain.Future work should be focused on in-depth studies of graphene chemistry and materials science to provide a detailed understanding of the factors affecting the materials performance.

Abstract:Geim and Novoselov were jointly awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics ‘‘for groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene’’. Currently, graphene is one of the most representative low-dimensional materials and shows particular electronic, optical, mechanical and chemical properties, among others, which have found application in several scientific and technological areas. The graphene family has gained the attention of an increasing number of researchers working in different areas, from composites to molecular electronics. Thus, many promising applications based on graphene are being developed currently. Several themed issues and monographs focusing on this research space have been published. This themed issue of Chemical Society Reviews incorporates both critical and tutorial reviews and aims at providing an overview of recent developments in the expanding field of graphene chemistry. Thus, the issue covers a panorama of the latest progress related to different aspects of graphene species, ranging from theory, chemical functionalization, electron transfer chemistry and catalysis, to graphene composite materials, ‘‘graphene-on-surface’’ structures, 2D heterostructures, graphene derivatives and biomedical applications. Moreover, it has a differential character of major importance regarding previous collections: each review is written by authors from two or more research groups, who have been able to share and to contrast their particular experiences in a joint paper. The tutorial review by Roldan, Guinea and colleagues (DOI: 10.1039/C7CS00210F) presents an overview of the basic theoretical aspects of two-dimensional (2D) crystals. The authors revise not only the essential aspects of graphene but also the new families of semiconducting 2D materials, like transition metal dichalcogenides or black phosphorus. Additionally, some of the exciting new possibilities offered by 2D crystals are discussed, such as manipulation and control of quantum degrees of freedom (spin and pseudospin), confinement of excitons, or unconventional superconducting phases. The joint work of five research groups, namely, the teams of Guldi, Hirsch, Martı́n, D’Souza and Torres (DOI: 10.1039/ C7CS00229G) is dedicated to graphenebased materials (GBMs). In this review, the authors offer a general overview of the most relevant synthetic approaches for the covalent and non-covalent functionalization and characterization of GBMs. Moreover, they describe some representative examples of the incorporation to GBMs of electroactive units such as porphyrins, phthalocyanines, or ferrocene, among others, affording donor–acceptor (D–A) hybrids. Abstract:Graphene is the ultimately monolayer material with single-atom thickness. It possesses many fascinating properties including massless Dirac electronic structure, anomalous quantum Hall effects, high mobility, extraordinary high thermal conductivity, stiffness and strength (see other chapters in this book). Impressively, these properties have remarkable dependence on its morphology and atomic structure, e.g. its size and shape (Fig. 1, Xu & Buehler, 2010a). Moreover, interior and exterior doping effects from defects, molecular adsorptions or electromagnetic fields are also significant. For example, hydrogenation, oxidation and electrical field significantly tune its structural, mechanical, thermal, electronic and optical structures, which is controllable and even reversible. These sensitive responses of a graphene sheet to structural and environmental cues enable us opportunities to engineer its physical and chemical properties at nanoscale.

Abstract:Graphene is a one-atom-thick layer of carbon atoms arranged in a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. Graphene has attracted tremendous attention due to its exceptional mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. Graphene was considered a ”wonder material” immediately after its discovery because it was deemed capa- ble of bringing drastic changes to many fields. This review gives a comprehensive overview of the atomic structure of graphene, its bonding, and the physical characteristics that have positioned this material as one of the most studied during the past two decades. Further, we discuss recent synthesis techniques including CVD and electrochemical exfoliation and detail the advantages and limitations of each with regard to scalable production. The following review further discusses the vast applications of graphene, from electronics to energy storage, involving production challenges and further improvements that could be achieved in the future. This collection is meant to serve as a starting point for researchers interested in the complications and opportunities brought about by graphene in today’s technologies.

Abstract:Graphene is a fascinating new nanocarbon possessing, single-, bi- or few- (≤ ten) layers of carbon atoms forming six-membered rings. Different types of graphene have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The extraordinary electronic properties of single-and bi-layer graphenes are indeed most unique and unexpected. Other properties of graphene such as gas adsorption characteristics, magnetic and electrochemical properties and the effects of doping by electrons and holes are equally noteworthy. Interestingly, molecular charge-transfer also markedly affects the electronic structure and properties of graphene. Many aspects of graphene are yet to be explored, including synthetic strategies which can yield sufficient quantities of graphene with the desired number of layers.

Abstract:The chemical production of graphene as well as its controlled wet- chemical modification is a challenge for synthetic chemists and the characterization of reaction products requires sophisticated analytic methods. In this review we first describe the structure of graphene and graphene oxide. We then outline the most important synthetic methods which are used for the production of these carbon based nanomaterials. We summarize the state-of-the-art for their chemical functionalization by non-covalent and covalent approaches. We put special emphasis on the differentiation of the terms graphite, graphene, graphite oxide and graphene oxide. An improved fundamental knowledge about the structure and the chemical properties of graphene and graphene oxide is an important prerequisite for the development of practical applications.

Abstract:Single layers of carbon dubbed "graphenes", from which graphite is built, have attracted broad interest in the scientific community because of recent exciting experimental results. Graphene is interesting from a fundamental research perspective, as well as for potential technological applications. Here, we provide a brief overview of recent developments in this field, focusing especially on the electronic properties of graphite. Experimental evidence indicates that high-quality graphite is a multi-layer system with nearly decoupled 2D graphene planes. Based on experimental observations, we anticipate that thin graphite samples and not single layers will be the most promising candidates for graphene-based electronics.

Abstract:Carbon materials, with their diverse allotropes, have played significant roles in our daily life and the development of material science. Following 0D C<sub>60</sub> and 1D carbon nanotube, 2D graphene materials, with their distinctively fascinating properties, have been receiving tremendous attention since 2004. To fulfill the efficient utilization of 2D graphene sheets in applications such as energy storage and conversion, electrochemical catalysis, and environmental remediation, 3D structures constructed by graphene sheets have been attempted over the past decade, giving birth to a new generation of graphene materials called 3D graphene materials. This review starts with the definition, classifications, brief history, and basic synthesis chemistries of 3D graphene materials. Then a critical discussion on the design considerations of 3D graphene materials for diverse applications is provided. Subsequently, after emphasizing the importance of normalized property characterization for the 3D structures, approaches for 3D graphene material synthesis from three major types of carbon sources (GO, hydrocarbons and inorganic carbon compounds) based on GO chemistry, hydrocarbon chemistry, and new alkali-metal chemistry, respectively, are comprehensively reviewed with a focus on their synthesis mechanisms, controllable aspects, and scalability. At last, current challenges and future perspectives for the development of 3D graphene materials are addressed.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
