Abstract:Recently, P. Yuan presented a local method to find permutation polynomials and their compositional inverses over finite fields. The work of P. Yuan inspires us to compute the compositional inverses of three classes of the permutation polynomials: (a) the permutation polynomials of the form $ax^q+bx+(x^q-x)^k$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2},$ where $a+b \in \mathbb{F}_q^*$ or $a^q=b;$ (b) the permutation polynomials of the forms $f(x)=-x+x^{(q^2+1)/2}+x^{(q^3+q)/2} $ and $f(x)+x$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^3};$ (c) the permutation polynomial of the form $A^{m}(x)+L(x)$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n},$ where ${\rm Im}(A(x))$ is a vector space with dimension $1$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ and $L(x)$ is not a linearized permutation polynomial.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the compositional inverses of several classes permutation polynomials of the form $\sum_{i=1}^kb_i\left({\rm Tr}_m^{mn}(x)^{t_i}+\delta\right)^{s_i}+f_1(x)$, where $1\leq i \leq k,$ $s_i$ are positive integers, $b_i \in \mathbb{F}_{p^m},$ $p$ is a prime and $f_1(x)$ is a polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_{p^{mn}}$ satisfying the following conditions: (i) ${\rm Tr}_m^{mn}(x) \circ f_1(x)=\varphi(x) \circ {\rm Tr}_m^{mn}(x),$ where $\varphi(x)$ is a polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_{p^m};$ (ii) For any $a \in \mathbb{F}_{p^m},$ $f_1(x)$ is injective on ${\rm Tr}_m^{mn}(a)^{-1}.$

Abstract:We focus on the permutation polynomials of the form $L(X)+\Tr_{m}^{3m}(X)^{s}$ over $\F_{q^3}$, where $\F_q$ is the finite field with $q=p^m$ elements, $p$ is a prime number, $m$ is a positive integer, $\Tr_{m}^{3m}$ is the relative trace function from $\F_{p^{3m}}$ to $\F_{p^{m}}$, $L(X)$ is a linearized polynomial over $\F_{q^{3}}$, and $s>1$ is a positive integer. More precisely, we present six new classes of permutation polynomials over $\F_{q^3}$ of the aforementioned form: one class over finite fields of even characteristic, three classes over finite fields of odd characteristic, and the remaining two over finite fields of arbitrary characteristic. Furthermore, we show that these classes of permutation polynomials are inequivalent to the known ones of the same form. We also provide the explicit expressions for the compositional inverses of each of these classes of permutation polynomials.

Abstract:In this paper, we further investigate the local criterion and present a class of permutation polynomials and their compositional inverses over $ \mathbb{F}_{q^2}$. Additionally, we demonstrate that linearized polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ is a local permutation polynomial with respect to all linear transformations from $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ to $\mathbb{F}_q ,$ and that every permutation polynomial is a local permutation polynomial with respect to certain mappings.

Abstract:Permutation polynomials over finite fields constitute an active research area and have applications in many areas of science and engineering. In this paper, four classes of monomial complete permutation polynomials and one class of trinomial complete permutation polynomials are presented, one of which confirms a conjecture proposed by Wu et al. (Sci China Math 58:2081–2094, 2015 ). Furthermore, we give two classes of permutation trinomial, and make some progress on a conjecture about the differential uniformity of power permutation polynomials proposed by Blondeau et al. (Int J Inf Coding Theory 1:149–170, 2010 ).

Abstract:Permutation polynomials over finite fields are an interesting and constantly active research subject of study for many years. They have important applications in areas of mathematics and engineering. In recent years, permutation binomials and permutation trinomials attract people's interests due to their simple algebraic forms. In this paper, by reversely using Tu's method for the characterization of permutation polynomials with exponents of Niho type, we propose a new method to construct permutation trinomials with coefficients 1. Moreover, we give the explicit compositional inverses of a class of permutation trinomials for a special case.

Abstract:In 1953, Carlitz showed that all permutation polynomials over , where is a power of a prime, are generated by the special permutation polynomials (the inversion) and (affine functions, where ). Recently, Nikova, Nikov and Rijmen (2019) proposed an algorithm (NNR) to find a decomposition of the inverse function in quadratics, and computationally covered all dimensions . Petrides (2023) theoretically found a class of integers for which it is easy to decompose the inverse into quadratics, and improved the NNR algorithm, thereby extending the computation up to . In this paper, we extend Petrides' result, as well as we propose a new number theoretical approach, which allows us to easily cover all (surely, odd) exponents up to 250, at least.

Abstract:The problem of constructing a family of polynomials over a finite field all yielding permutations in a single conjugacy class, namely involutions with specified number of fixed points, is addressed. For an odd prime power q satisfying we construct totally permutation polynomials, all giving involutory permutations with exactly fixed points. Among them polynomials are trinomials, and the rest are 6-term polynomials.

Abstract:We determine all permutations in two large classes of polynomials over finite fields, where the construction of the polynomials in each class involves the denominators of a class of rational functions generalizing the classical Redei functions. Our results generalize eight recent results from the literature, and our proofs of our more general results are much shorter and simpler than the previous proofs of special cases.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct two classes of permutation polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ with odd characteristic from rational R\'{e}dei functions. A complete characterization of their compositional inverses is also given. These permutation polynomials can be generated recursively. As a consequence, we can generate recursively permutation polynomials with arbitrary number of terms. More importantly, the conditions of these polynomials being permutations are very easy to characterize. For wide applications in practice, several classes of permutation binomials and trinomials are given. With the help of a computer, we find that the number of permutation polynomials of these types is very large.

Abstract:Gutierrez and Urroz (2023) have proposed a family of local permutation polynomials over finite fields of arbitrary characteristic based on a class of symmetric subgroups without fixed points called $e$-Klenian groups. The polynomials within this family are referred to as $e$-Klenian polynomials. Furthermore, they have shown the existence of companions for the $e$-Klenian polynomials when the characteristic of the finite field is odd. Here, we present three new families of local permutation polynomials over finite fields of even characteristic. We also consider the problem of the existence of companions for the $e$-Klenian polynomials over finite fields of even characteristic. More precisely, we prove that over finite fields of even characteristic, the $0$-Klenian polynomials do not have any companions. However, for $e \geq 1$, we explicitly provide a companion for the $e$-Klenian polynomials. Moreover, we provide a companion for each of the new families of local permutation polynomials that we introduce.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct two classes of permutation polynomials over ${\mathbb {F}}_{q^2}$ with odd characteristic closely related to rational Rédei functions. Two distinct characterizations of their compositional inverses are also obtained. These permutation polynomials can be generated recursively. As a consequence, we can generate permutation polynomials with an arbitrary number of terms in a very simple way. Moreover, several classes of permutation binomials and trinomials are given. With the help of a computer, we find that the number of permutation polynomials of these types is quite big.
