Abstract:We develop a conservative piece-wise parabolic advecting remapping method (PPRM). The first part of it is an alternate sweeping average method (ASAM) for improving symmetrization of advecting remapping method. The second part is a piece-wise parabolic distributing function for improving order. We use one-and two-dimensional examples to test order and symmetrization of PPRM. © 2009 Chinese Nuclear Sciety.

Abstract:Recently, P. Yuan presented a local method to find permutation polynomials and their compositional inverses over finite fields. The work of P. Yuan inspires us to compute the compositional inverses of three classes of the permutation polynomials: (a) the permutation polynomials of the form $ax^q+bx+(x^q-x)^k$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2},$ where $a+b \in \mathbb{F}_q^*$ or $a^q=b;$ (b) the permutation polynomials of the forms $f(x)=-x+x^{(q^2+1)/2}+x^{(q^3+q)/2} $ and $f(x)+x$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^3};$ (c) the permutation polynomial of the form $A^{m}(x)+L(x)$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n},$ where ${\rm Im}(A(x))$ is a vector space with dimension $1$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ and $L(x)$ is not a linearized permutation polynomial.

Improving Compositional Generalization in Math Word Problem Solving

Abstract:Compositional generalization refers to a model's capability to generalize to newly composed input data based on the data components observed during training. It has triggered a series of compositional generalization analysis on different tasks as generalization is an important aspect of language and problem solving skills. However, the similar discussion on math word problems (MWPs) is limited. In this manuscript, we study compositional generalization in MWP solving. Specifically, we first introduce a data splitting method to create compositional splits from existing MWP datasets. Meanwhile, we synthesize data to isolate the effect of compositions. To improve the compositional generalization in MWP solving, we propose an iterative data augmentation method that includes diverse compositional variation into training data and could collaborate with MWP methods. During the evaluation, we examine a set of methods and find all of them encounter severe performance loss on the evaluated datasets. We also find our data augmentation method could significantly improve the compositional generalization of general MWP methods. Code is available at https://github.com/demoleiwang/CGMWP.

Abstract:This article studies sums over all compositions of an integer. We derive a generating function for this quantity, and apply it to several special functions, including various generalized Bernoulli numbers. We connect composition sums with a recursive tree introduced by S.G. Woon and extended by P. Fuchs under the name "general PI tree", in which an output sequence $\{x_n\}$ is associated to the input sequence $\{g_n\}$ by summing over each row of the tree built from $\{g_n\}$. Our link with the notion of compositions allows to introduce a modification of Fuchs' tree that takes into account nonlinear transforms of the generating function of the input sequence. We also introduce the notion of \textit{generalized sums over compositions}, where we look at composition sums over each part of a composition.

Abstract:We consider composition problems of the form (1/n)∑i = 1n Fi (1/m)∑j = 1m Gj(x) , which are important for machine learning. Although gradient descent and stochastic gradient descent are straightforward solutions, the essential computation of G (x) = (1/m)∑j = 1mGj(x) in each single iteration is expensive, let alone for large m . In this article, we devise a stochastically controlled compositional gradient algorithm. Specifically, we introduce two variants of stochastically controlled technique to estimate the inner function G(x) and the gradient of the objective function, respectively. The computational cost is largely reduced. However, the natural needs of two stochastic subsets D1 and D2 form direct barriers to guarantee the convergence of the algorithm, especially the theoretical proof of the convergence. To this end, we present a general convergence analysis by proving | D1|=min{1/ϵ,m} and | D2|=min{1/ϵ,n } , through which the proposed method significantly improve composition algorithms under low target accuracy (i.e., 1/ϵ << m or n ) in both strongly convex and nonconvex settings. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over existing methods.

Pareto Fronts for Compositionally Solving String Diagrams of Parity Games

Abstract:Open parity games are proposed as a compositional extension of parity games with algebraic operations, forming string diagrams of parity games. A potential application of string diagrams of parity games is to describe a large parity game with a given compositional structure and solve it efficiently as a divide-and-conquer algorithm by exploiting its compositional structure. Building on our recent progress in open Markov decision processes, we introduce Pareto fronts of open parity games, offering a framework for multi-objective solutions. We establish the positional determinacy of open parity games with respect to their Pareto fronts through a novel translation method. Our translation converts an open parity game into a parity game tailored to a given single-objective. Furthermore, we present a simple algorithm for solving open parity games, derived from this translation that allows the application of existing efficient algorithms for parity games. Expanding on this foundation, we develop a compositional algorithm for string diagrams of parity games.

Under the commutative condition of PQ=QP, we give explicit representations of the generalized Drazin inverse (P+Q)d in term of P, Pd, Q and Qd. We consider some applications of our results to the perturbation of the Drazin inverse and analyze a number of special cases.

Abstract:We focus on the permutation polynomials of the form $L(X)+\Tr_{m}^{3m}(X)^{s}$ over $\F_{q^3}$, where $\F_q$ is the finite field with $q=p^m$ elements, $p$ is a prime number, $m$ is a positive integer, $\Tr_{m}^{3m}$ is the relative trace function from $\F_{p^{3m}}$ to $\F_{p^{m}}$, $L(X)$ is a linearized polynomial over $\F_{q^{3}}$, and $s>1$ is a positive integer. More precisely, we present six new classes of permutation polynomials over $\F_{q^3}$ of the aforementioned form: one class over finite fields of even characteristic, three classes over finite fields of odd characteristic, and the remaining two over finite fields of arbitrary characteristic. Furthermore, we show that these classes of permutation polynomials are inequivalent to the known ones of the same form. We also provide the explicit expressions for the compositional inverses of each of these classes of permutation polynomials.

Abstract:Reversible computing is motivated by both pragmatic and foundational considerations arising from a variety of disciplines. We take a particular path through the development of reversible computation, emphasizing compositional reversible computation. We start from a historical perspective, by reviewing those approaches that developed reversible extensions of lambda-calculi, Turing machines, and communicating process calculi. These approaches share a common challenge: computations made reversible in this way do not naturally compose locally. We then turn our attention to computational models that eschew the detour via existing irreversible models. Building on an original analysis by Landauer, the insights of Bennett, Fredkin, and Toffoli introduced a fresh approach to reversible computing in which reversibility is elevated to the status of the main design principle. These initial models are expressed using low-level bit manipulations, however. Abstracting from the low-level of the Bennett-Fredkin-Toffoli models and pursuing more intrinsic, typed, and algebraic models, naturally leads to rig categories as the canonical model for compositional reversible programming. The categorical model reveals connections to type isomorphisms, symmetries, permutations, groups, and univalent universes. This, in turn, paves the way for extensions to reversible programming based on monads and arrows. These extensions are shown to recover conventional irreversible programming, a variety of reversible computational effects, and more interestingly both pure (measurement-free) and measurement-based quantum programming.

Confounding Privacy and Inverse Composition

Abstract:We introduce a novel privacy notion of ($\epsilon, \delta$)-confounding privacy that generalizes both differential privacy and Pufferfish privacy. In differential privacy, sensitive information is contained in the dataset while in Pufferfish privacy, sensitive information determines data distribution. Consequently, both assume a chain-rule relationship between the sensitive information and the output of privacy mechanisms. Confounding privacy, in contrast, considers general causal relationships between the dataset and sensitive information. One of the key properties of differential privacy is that it can be easily composed over multiple interactions with the mechanism that maps private data to publicly shared information. In contrast, we show that the quantification of the privacy loss under the composition of independent ($\epsilon, \delta$)-confounding private mechanisms using the optimal composition of differential privacy \emph{underestimates} true privacy loss. To address this, we characterize an inverse composition framework to tightly implement a target global ($\epsilon_{g}, \delta_{g}$)-confounding privacy under composition while keeping individual mechanisms independent and private. In particular, we propose a novel copula-perturbation method which ensures that (1) each individual mechanism $i$ satisfies a target local ($\epsilon_{i}, \delta_{i}$)-confounding privacy and (2) the target global ($\epsilon_{g}, \delta_{g}$)-confounding privacy is tightly implemented by solving an optimization problem. Finally, we study inverse composition empirically on real datasets.

Abstract:In this paper, we study certain combinatorial expansions of descent polynomials by using the change of context-free grammars method. We provide a unified approach to study the gamma-positivity and the partial gamma-positivity of the descent polynomials of several combinatorial structures, including the descent polynomials of permutations, derangements, Stirling permutations, Legendre-Stirling permutations and Jacobi-Stirling permutations. Moreover, we study a group action on Stirling permutations and Jacobi-Stirling permutations due to Foata and Strehl.

Abstract:Compositional Game Theory is a new, recently introduced model of economic games based upon the computer science idea of compositionality. In it, complex and irregular games can be built up from smaller and simpler games, and the equilibria of these complex games can be defined recursively from the equilibria of their simpler subgames. This paper extends the model by providing a final coalgebra semantics for infinite games. In the course of this, we introduce a new operator on games to model the economic concept of subgame perfection.

Abstract:Compositional models were introduce by Jirousek and Shenoy in the general framework of valuation-based systems. They based their theory on an axiomatic system of valuations involving not only the operations of combination and marginalisation, but also of removal. They claimed that this systems covers besides the classical case of discrete probability distributions, also the cases of Gaussian densities and belief functions, and many other systems. Whereas their results on the compositional operator are correct, the axiomatic basis is not sufficient to cover the examples claimed above. We propose here a different axiomatic system of valuation algebras, which permits a rigorous mathematical theory of compositional operators in valuation-based systems and covers all the examples mentioned above. It extends the classical theory of inverses in semigroup theory and places thereby the present theory into its proper mathematical frame. Also this theory sheds light on the different structures of valuation-based systems, like regular algebras (represented by probability potentials), canncellative algebras (Gaussian potentials) and general separative algebras (density functions).

Abstract:Let $1 \le k \le n,$ and let $v_1,\ldots,v_k$ be integral vectors in $\mathbb{Z}^n$. We consider the wedge map $\alpha_{n,k} : (\mathbb{Z}^n)^k /SL_k(\mathbb{Z}) \rightarrow \wedge^k(\mathbb{Z}^n)$, $(v_1,\ldots,v_k) \rightarrow v_1 \wedge \cdots \wedge v_k $. In his Disquisitiones, Gauss proved that $\alpha_{n,2}$ is injective when restricted to a primitive system of vectors when defining his composition law for binary quadratic forms. He also gave an algorithm for inverting $\alpha_{3,2}$ in a different context on the representation of integers by ternary quadratic forms. We give here an explicit algorithm for inverting $\alpha_{n,2}$, and observe via Bhargava's composition law for $\mathbb{Z}^2 \otimes \mathbb{Z}^2 \otimes \mathbb{Z}^2 $ cube that inverting $\alpha_{4,2}$ is the main algorithmic step in Gauss's composition law for binary quadratic forms. This places Gauss's composition as a special case of the geometric problem of inverting a wedge map which may be of independent interests. We also show that a given symmetric positive definite matrix $A$ induces a natural metric on the integral Grassmannian $G_{n,k}(\mathbb{Z})$ so that the map $X \rightarrow X^TAX$ becomes norm preserving.

Abstract:Pipedreams are combinatorial objects that compute Grothendieck polynomials. We introduce a new combinatorial object that naturally recast the pipedream formula. From this, we obtain the first direct combinatorial formula for the top degree components of Grothendieck polynomials, also known as the Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials. We also prove the inverse fireworks case of a conjecture of Mészáros, Setiabrata, and St. Dizier on the support of Grothendieck polynomials.
