Abstract:This survey article is a much extended version of a lecture given at a Clay Institute workshop in October 2006. It describes all known results on the existence of stable coherent systems on algebraic curves.

Abstract:There is a well studied notion of GIT-stability for coherent systems over curves, which depends on a real parameter $\alpha$. For generated coherent systems, there is a further notion of stability derived from Mumford's definition of linear stability for varieties in projective space. Let $\alpha_S$ be close to zero and $\alpha_L \gg 0$. We show that a generated coherent system which is $\alpha_S$-stable and linearly stable is $\alpha_L$-stable, and give examples showing that without further assumptions, there are no other implications between these three types of stability. We observe that several of the systems constructed have stable dual span bundle, including systems which are not $\alpha$-semistable for any value of $\alpha$. We use this to prove a case of Butler's conjecture for systems of type $(2, d, 5)$.

Linear stability of coherent systems and applications to Butler's conjecture

Abstract:The notion of linear stability of a variety in projective space was introduced by Mumford in the context of GIT. It has subsequently been applied by Mistretta and others to Butler's conjecture on stability of the dual span bundle (DSB) $M_{V, E}$ of a general generated coherent system $( E, V )$. We survey recent progress in this direction on rank one coherent systems, prove a new result for hyperelliptic curves, and state some open questions. We then extend the definition of linear stability to generated coherent systems of higher rank. We show that various coherent systems with unstable DSB studied by Brambila-Paz, Mata-Gutierrez, Newstead and Ortega are also linearly unstable. We show that linearly stable coherent systems of type $(2, d, 4)$ for low enough $d$ have stable DSB, and use this to prove a particular case of a generalized Butler conjecture. We then exhibit a linearly stable generated coherent system with unstable DSB, confirming that linear stability of $( E, V )$ in general remains weaker than semistability of $M_{V, E}$ in higher rank. We end with a list of open questions on the higher rank case.

First, we derive some general results of such curves and then we analyze several families of curves that happen to be Diophantine stable.

Abstract:We investigate stability properties of the reductive Borel-Serre categories; these were introduced as a model for unstable algebraic K-theory in previous work. We see that they exhibit better homological stability properties than the general linear groups. We also show that they provide an explicit model for Yuan's partial algebraic K-theory.

Abstract:With the long-term goal of proving local structure theorems of algebraic stacks in positive characteristic near points with reductive (but possibly non-linearly reductive) stabilizer, we conjecture that quotient stacks of the form $[\mathrm{Spec}\, A/G]$, with $G$ reductive and $A^G$ complete local, are coherently complete along the unique closed point. We establish this conjecture in two interesting cases: (1) $A^G$ is artinian and (2) $G$ acts trivially on $\mathrm{Spec}\, A$. We also establish coherent completeness results for graded unipotent group actions. In order to establish these results, we prove a number of foundational statements concerning cohomological and completeness properties of algebraic stacks -- including on how these properties ascend and descend along morphisms.

The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the notion of stability on an arbitrary Artin stack and construct a coarse moduli space for the open substack of stable points. Abstract:We describe the notion of stability of coherent systems as a framework to deal with redundancy. We define stable coherent systems and show how this notion can help the design of reliable systems. We demonstrate that the reliability of stable systems can be efficiently computed using the algebraic versions of improved inclusion-exclusion formulas and sum of disjoint products.

Abstract:We investigate the geometry of correspondences between curves, and prove that correspondences over a non-Archimedean valued field have potentially stable reduction, generalising and strengthening results of Coleman and Liu. This yields a concrete description of the operator on the cohomology of the generic fibres arising from linearisation of the correspondence, via the weight-monodromy filtration and Picard-Lefschetz theory. We explicitly determine stable models of Hecke operators on various quaternionic Shimura curves, and prove a generalisation of the geometric theory of canonical subgroups by Goren and Kassaei.

Abstract:This is a survey paper about moduli spaces that have a natural structure of a (possibly incomplete) locally symmetric variety. We outline the Baily-Borel compactification for such varieties and compare it with the compactifications furnished by techniques in algebraic geometry. These differ in general, but we show that a reconciliation is possible by means of a generalization of the Baily-Borel technique for a class of incomplete locally symmetric varieties. Abstract:Based on a relative Wu theorem in étale cohomology, we study the compatibility of Steenrod operations on Chow groups and on étale cohomology. Using the resulting obstructions to algebraicity, we construct new examples of non-algebraic cohomology classes over various fields ($\mathbb{C}$, $\mathbb{R}$, $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$, $\mathbb{F}_q$). We also use Steenrod operations to study the mod $2$ cohomology classes of a compact $\mathcal{C}^{\infty}$ manifold $M$ that are algebraizable, i.e. algebraic on some real algebraic model of $M$. We give new examples of algebraizable and non-algebraizable classes, answering questions of Benedetti, Dedò and Kucharz.

Abstract:This survey is about Galois theory of curves in characteristic p, a topic which has inspired major research in algebraic geometry and number theory and which contains many open questions. We illustrate important phenomena which occur for covers of curves in characteristic p. We explain key results on the structure of fundamental groups. We end by describing areas of active research and giving two new results about the genus and p-rank of certain covers of the affine line.

On Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes Algebras of C$^\ast$-Dynamical Systems

Abstract:We continue the study of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a C$^\ast$-dynamical system, initiated by Bédos and Conti, and recently extended by Buss, Kwaśniewski, McKee and Skalski. Firstly, we introduce and study a natural notion of a Fourier algebra of a C$^\ast$-dynamical system. Notably, we show that it can be equivalently defined as the closure of the multipliers with finite support or as the closure of multipliers coming from regular equivariant representations. Secondly, we undertake an analysis of the equivariant representation theory of commutative systems. Our main result about this is a description of the group theoretical aspect of the equivariant representation theory in terms of cocycle representations of the underlying transformation group.

Abstract:Stable envelopes, introduced by Maulik and Okounkov, provide a family of bases for the equivariant cohomology of symplectic resolutions. The theory of stable envelopes provides a fascinating interplay between geometry, combinatorics and integrable systems. In this expository article, we give a self-contained introduction to cohomological stable envelopes of type A bow varieties (an interesting class of varieties extending Nakajima quiver varieties). Our main focus is on the existence and the orthogonality properties of stable envelopes for bow varieties. The restriction to this specific class of varieties allows us to illustrate the theory combinatorially and to provide simplified proofs, both laying a basis for explicit calculations.
