Abstract:The development of non-precious metal electrocatalysts with remarkable activity is a major objective for achieving high-efficiency hydrogen generation. Here, a trimetallic electrocatalyst with a dendritic nanostructure, which is denoted as NiMoCu-NF, was fabricated on nickel foam via a gas-template electrodeposition strategy. By virtue of the metallic doping and structural optimization, NiMoCu-NF exhibits superior HER electrocatalytic activity with an overpotential of 52 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Additionally, the NiMoCu-NF-derived nickel-based (oxy)hydroxide species in the oxidation operating state deliver considerable electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction (UOR) performance to match the efficient H2 generation, with a low voltage of 1.54 V to realize overall electrolysis at 50 mA cm-2. Impressively, combined experimental and simulation analysis demonstrate that the NiMoCu-NF with a favorable 3D nanostructure feature effectively regulates the heterogeneous interface states, inducing a "Gas Microfluidic Pumping" (GMP) effect that improved electron-mass transfer properties to accelerate the electrocatalytic reaction kinetics of either the HER or UOR.

Abstract:The insufficient exposure of catalyst active sites and high adsorption energy barrier of intermediates (H*) on the Ni surface are the main reasons for its lack of hydrogen evolution activity under high current. However, developing non noble metal hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts with stable activity under high current density is key to achieving large-scale industrial H 2 production. Herein, a tungsten-doped dendritic nickel-copper array on copper mesh (W-NiCu array /CM) is prepared by combining microscopic morphology control and atomic scale electron control strategies. Benefiting from the unique dendritic morphology and excellent electronic structure, the electrocatalyst exhibits outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance under high current densities. In particular, it requires a low overpotential of 257 and 349 mV at −500 and −1000 mA cm −2 , respectively, which surpasses the state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C. Characterization and density functional theory (DFT) further reveal that Cu and W control the electronic structure, and the active center Ni obtains the appropriate d-band center; thus, the optimal Gibbs free energy (ΔG H* ) of hydrogen adsorption can be gained. Overall, this study combines morphology engineering and electronic control engineering to provide an idea for the development of advanced nonprecious metal electrocatalysts applied for industrial hydrogen production.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and durable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts composed of earth-abundant materials is crucial for large-scale electrochemical hydrogen production. Herein, interfacial chemistry engineering is employed to decouple the restriction of both water discharge and hydrogen adsorption free energy. And low valence state Niδ+ (δ < 1) is proposed as an efficient water-dissociation promoter based on our dual-descriptor method. Moreover, metallic and intrinsic HER-active Ni is introduced and a highly conductive edge-enriched Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni hybrid electrocatalyst is constructed. DFT calculations and microkinetics analysis demonstrate that the Ni site and Ni0.2Mo0.8N site have favorable hydroxyl and hydrogen species adsorption energetics, respectively, which can cooperate synergistically towards alkaline hydrogen evolution. The resulting electrocatalyst shows excellent HER electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of about 70 mV at 300 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 33 mV dec−1. It also offers outstanding operational stability at large current densities up to 200 mA cm−2. Further theoretical calculations suggest a tip-enhanced-like local electric field around the topmost Ni nanoparticles, leading to increased K-ion concentration in the inner Helmholtz plane. The HER kinetics and surface reactant density can be simultaneously improved by this hierarchical Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni electrocatalyst. This study might open up new avenues of reasonable design of hierarchical structures for superior electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The development of low-cost, high-performance electrocatalysts for hydrogen precipitation reactions is the key to solving the energy crisis. Metal organic framework (MOFs) with metal centers and organic ligands are one of the ideal materials for the preparation of non-precious metal carbon-based HER electrocatalysts. In this work, a series of transition metal-doped nano-superstructures carbon-based materials NiMC (M=Fe, Co, Cu) were designed and prepared by introducing different transition metal atoms using Ni-MOF as precursors. And the effect of transition metal doping on the electrocatalytic hydrogen precipitation performance of Ni-MOF has been systematically investigated. Nitrogen adsorption tests have shown that the NiFeC catalyst has the highest specific surface area. The overpotential was only 69 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm -2 in an alkaline electrolyte and exhibited excellent stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the electronic interactions between Fe and Ni are tuned after Fe atom doping, which optimizes the hydrogen adsorption energy leading to the excellent HER catalytic performance of NiFeC.

Abstract:The development of an efficient and cost-effective electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) that can be widely applied in industrial settings poses a multifaceted challenge. This research involved fabricating a NiCo-LDH/Cu electrode as a self-supported catalyst for hydrogen evolution on nickel foam using a solvothermal method and constant potential electrodeposition. In comparison to the NiCu electrocatalyst produced through a single-step electrodeposition, the NiCo-LDH/Cu hydrogen evolution electrode prepared via this combined approach exhibited significant electrocatalytic performance for HER in an alkaline electrolyte. The NiCo-LDH/Cu catalytic electrode requires only an overpotential of 78.0 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 in 1 M KOH. The current density required to catalyze the hydrogenation reaction is reduced by 64 % compared to pure nickel foam. This reduction accelerates the hydrogenation catalytic reaction and enhances electrochemical stability. The remarkable HER efficiency of the NiCo-LDH/Cu catalytic electrode primarily stems from the increased active surface area facilitated by the LDH structure and the synergistic impact generated during the NiCu co-deposition process. This work shows an economical and practical method for developing efficient non-precious metal catalytic electrodes.

Abstract:Composition screening and structure optimization are two critical factors in improving the electrocatalytic performance of hybrid materials. Herein, we present a straightforward hydrothermal hydrolyzation-topological transformation strategy for the synthesis of a range of Ni-Co bimetallic compounds with a hollow nanoflower structure. Among these Ni-Co compounds, Ni2P/Co2P hollow nanoflowers (HNFs) exhibit the most impressive electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), necessitating only an 153 mV overpotential to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 under alkaline conditions. Importantly, this performance remains stable for over 48 h, indicating exceptional durability. The exceptional catalytic performance of Ni2P/Co2P HNFs arises from the synergy between the hybrid Ni2P/Co2P components and the hollow nanoflower structure. The former provides abundant catalytic sites, while electron rearrangement at the heterointerfaces enhances the adsorption/desorption of active species and facilitates electron transfer. The latter contributes to the exposure of catalytic sites, shortening mass and charge transfer routes, and bolstering structural stability during prolonged electrocatalysis. This research offers valuable insights into the screening and optimization of advanced hybrid electrocatalysts, holding significant promise for applications in the emerging field of new energy technologies.

Abstract:Searching for inexpensive, efficient and durable electrocatalysts with earth-abundant elements toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of vital importance for the future sustainable hydrogen economy, yet still remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a facile template-engaged strategy is demonstrated for the direct in-situ growth of Ni nanoparticles and N-doped carbon nanotubes on carbon nanorod substrates, forming a hierarchically branched architecture (abbreviated as Ni@N-C NT/NRs hereafter). The elaborate construction of such unique hierarchical structure with tightly encapsulated Ni nanoparticles and open configuration endows the as-fabricated Ni@N-C NT/NRs with abundant well-dispersed active sites, enlarged surface area, reduced resistances of charge transfer and mass diffusion, and reinforced mechanical robustness. As a consequence, the optimal Ni@N-C NT/NR catalyst demonstrates superior electrocatalytic activity with relatively low overpotential of 134 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 and excellent stability for HER in 0.1 M KOH, holding a great promise for practical scalable H 2 production. More importantly, this work offers a reliable methodology for feasible fabrication of robust high-performance carbon-based hierarchical architectures for a variety of electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Modulating the coordination environment of single-atom catalysts is considered an effective way to boost the electrocatalytic activity of the hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, a novel electrocatalyst comprising high-density low-coordination Ni single atoms anchored on Ni-embedded nanoporous carbon nanotubes (Ni-N-C/Ni@CNT-H) is constructed through a self-template assisted synthetic strategy. We demonstrate that the in situ generated AlN nanoparticles not only serve as the template for the formation of the nanoporous structure, but also contribute to the coordination between Ni and N atoms. Benefiting from the optimized charge distribution and hydrogen adsorption free energy of the unsaturated Ni-N-2 active structure and nanoporous structure of the carbon nanotube substrate, the resultant Ni-N-C/Ni@CNT-H exhibited outstanding electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity with a low overpotential of 175 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), and a long-term durability for over 160 h in continuous operation. This work provides a new insight and approach to the design and synthesis of efficient single-atom electrocatalysts toward hydrogen fuel production.

Abstract:Optimizing electronic structure and surface morphology are of great importance to achieve highly active and stable electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this paper, the vertically aligned Cu doped Ni/Ni3S2 nanosheet was successfully deposited on Ti mesh (NiCux/Ni3S2/TM, x = Cu/Ni atomic ratio in NiCux) by facile electrodeposition method. Phase composition, surface morphology and electronic structure information were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and XPS. The results unraveled that Cu doping induced the changes in both electronic structure and surface morphology of Ni/Ni3S2 sample, which were in favor of promoting the breakage of H-O bond in H2O and optimizing Ni-H-ads adsorption energy, thus improving HER activity with decreased overpotential at - 10 mA/cm(2) by 202 mV. The influence of Cu(NO3)(2) precursor content on HER activity of as-prepared NiCux/Ni3S2/TM was investigated. NiCu0.57/Ni3S2/TM prepared with 1.2 mM Cu(NO3)(2) exhibited the highest electrocatalytic activity toward HER with overpotential of 239 mV at - 10 mA/cm(2) and Tafel slope of 86 mV/dec. The enhanced activity and superior stability for NiCu0.57/Ni3S2/TM were ascribed to the change in electronic structure and surface morphology. (C) 2019 The Electrochemical Society.

Abstract:Tuning the structural features that furnish electrochemically active sites with improved kinetic diffusion can provide an alternative way to achieve high performance of electrocatalysis. Here, we report a nano-structure of Ni2P/C(NPC) nano-sheets supported on nickel foam (NF) that is prepared by sequenced nitrogen pyrolysis and gas phosphatization of Ni-MOF nanosheets. Initially, the passivated surface of nickel foam facilitates the oriented growth of Ni-MOF nanosheets, which is crucial for the maintenance of structure stability during the subsequent pyrolysis and phosphatization treatment. As a result, more catalytic active sites are exposed than the non-oriented NPC catalysts and diffusion kinetics is favorable. Consequently, the obtained composite can exhibit excellent hydrogen evolution catalytic activity in an alkaline electrolyte. For hydrogen evolution reaction, a current density of 10 mA cm-2 is provided at an overpotential of 97 mV and its onset overpotential is only 29 mV. Meanwhile, good morphology and catalytic activity can be maintained after 12 h of stability testing. This excellent performance is believed to be the result of NPC nanosheet structure on NF derived from the facet-oriented control of pristine Ni-MOF, enabling excellent reaction kinetics.

Abstract:Extensive researches have unequivocally revealed the remarkable potential of hierarchical porous intermetallic materials within the realms of electrocatalysis and energy materials. Nevertheless, the efficient and cost-effective synthesis of such electrocatalysts remains a challenging task, and the atomic-level mechanisms underlying hydrogen evolutions at active catalytic sites are still insufficiently comprehended. Herein, we report a novel synthesis technique for the hierarchical-heterostructured non-noble Ni-Co-Al intermetallics using spark plasma sintering followed by a selective dealloying process. This approach maximizes the electrochemical active surface area, thereby facilitating highly efficient hydrogen evolution reactions with an impressively low overpotential of only 75 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and a Tafel slope of 54 mV dec(-1). Through operando X-ray absorption fine structure and theoretical calculations, the dynamic evolution process during the hydrogen evolution reaction procedure is investigated and the atomic Ni and Co sites are identified as synergistic catalytic sites. These characteristics render this hierarchical-heterostructured porous intermetallics appealing contenders for electrocatalysts utilized in high-performance large-scale hydrogen generation applications.

Abstract:Metal sulfides for hydrogen evolution catalysis typically suffer from unfavorable hydrogen desorption properties due to the strong interaction between the adsorbed H and the intensely electronegative sulfur. Here, we demonstrate a general strategy to improve the hydrogen evolution catalysis of metal sulfides by modulating the surface electron densities. The N modulated NiCo 2 S 4 nanowire arrays exhibit an overpotential of 41 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 37 mV dec −1 , which are very close to the performance of the benchmark Pt/C in alkaline condition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory studies consistently confirm the surface electron densities of NiCo 2 S 4 have been effectively manipulated by N doping. The capability to modulate the electron densities of the catalytic sites could provide valuable insights for the rational design of highly efficient catalysts for hydrogen evolution and beyond.

Abstract:Developing efficient and robust bifunctional electrocatalysts are in high demand for the production of hydrogen by water splitting. Engineering an electrocatalyst with a regulated electronic structure and abundant active sites is an effective way to enhance the electrocatalytic activity. Herein, N-doped C-encapsulated Ni nanoparticles (Ni@N-C) are synthesized through a traditional hydrothermal reaction, followed by pyrolyzing under an Ar/H2 atmosphere. The electrochemical measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the electron transfer between the Ni core and the N-C shell induces the electron density redistribution on Ni@N-C, which directly promotes the adsorption and desorption of H* on the N-doped carbon (N-C) layer and thus dramatically enhances hydrogen production. Taking advantage of the porous spherical structure and the synergistic effects between Ni and N-doped carbon (N-C) layer, we obtain a Ni@N-C electrocatalyst that exhibits remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with low overpotentials of 117 and 325 mV, respectively. Impressively, the assembled cell using Ni@N-C as both anode and cathode exhibits excellent activity as well as stable cyclability for over 12 h.

Abstract:Conductivity and morphology are the two important factors affecting the performance of electrocatalysts. In this article, a facile two-step hydrothermal process was developed to grow Co9S8-Ni3S2 nanoarrays on nickel foam (Co9S8-Ni3S2 NAs/NF). The as-obtained catalyst possessed a novel morphology, in which the Co9S8 nanoneedles were surrounded by Ni3S2 ultrathin nanosheets. The resultant Co9S8-Ni3S2 nanoarrays not only permitted more exposures of active sites but also facilitated the charges and ions transport along the nanoarrays. Moreover, both Co9S8 and Ni3S2 exhibited metallic properties allowed the catalysts with conductivity (metallic conductor vs. semiconductor). Co9S8-Ni3S2 NAs/NF exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activities for both HER and OER in 1.0 M KOH solution. To reach a large current density of 100 mA cm(-2), it only required overpotentials of 204 mV and 346 mV for HER and OER, respectively. After long-term electrolysis, the high activities were still preserved. This work indicates efficient electrocatalysts can be obtained by the rational design of the heterostructure, which sheds some light on the development of noble metal-free electrocatalysts.

Abstract:A novel dendritic nanostructure NiSe has been synthesized for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through a hydrothermal method. The micromorphology and microstructure characterizations show that the branches of the dendritic NiSe are epitaxially grown on the trunk, and individual nickel selenide dendrites have three-dimensional structures with four branches in short axes. The nanostructures of each branch are paralleled to each other in the same plane, and are perpendicular to the trunk with the same crystal orientation. The dendritic NiSe catalyst demonstrates highly efficient HER activity with a low overpotential of 191 mV and a small Tafel slope of 47 mV dec −1 in acidic solutions. The remarkable enhancement of the dendritic NiSe in the HER performance can be attributed to its dense dendritic nano-structure, and high specific surface area, which provide effective diffusion channels and much more catalytic sites towards the HER. This achievement provides a new method for producing cheap and efficient dendritic nanostructures catalysts for water splitting.

Amorphous Core-Shell NiMoP@CuNWs Rod-Like Structure with Hydrophilicity Feature for Efficient Hydrogen Production in Neutral Media

Abstract:Using interface engineering, a highly efficient catalyst with a shell@core structure was successfully synthesized by growing an amorphous material composed of Ni, Mo, and P on Cu nanowires (NiMoP@CuNWs). This catalyst only requires an overpotential of 35 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2. The exceptional hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity is attributed to the unique amorphous rod-like nature of NiMoP@CuNWs, which possesses a special hydrophilic feature, enhances mass transfer, promotes effective contact between the electrode and electrolyte solution, and exposes more active sites during the catalytic process. Density functional theory revealed that the introduction of Mo weakens the binding strength of the Ni site on the catalyst surface with the H atom and promotes the desorption process of the H2 product significantly. Owing to its facile synthesis, low cost, and high catalytic performance, this electrocatalyst is a promising option for commercial applications as a water electrolysis catalyst. Abstract:Finding the best candidates with outstanding electrocatalytic capabilities for the hydrogen evolution reaction is essential for realizing large-scale hydrogen production through electrolysis. In this study, we synthesized NiCo2Se4 (NCS) and NiTe2 (NT) nanorod arrays using a hydrothermal method. The confirmation of catalyst formation was achieved through X-ray diffraction analysis, electron microscopy imaging, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Leveraging the plentiful heterointerfaces and synergistic effects arising from the incorporation of bimetallic components, the NCS/NT electrocatalyst demonstrates remarkable efficacy in catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction. It achieves a minimal overpotential of 163 mV to attain a current density of 50 mA cm-2, showcasing exceptional catalytic activity. Further exploration has revealed that the engineering of heterogeneous interfaces and the morphology of nanorods not only guarantee the exposure of numerous active sites and expedite electron-mass transfer but also trigger electron modulation. Such modulation serves to fine-tune the adsorptive and adsorptive dynamics of reaction intermediates, culminating in an enhancement of the catalyst's inherent activity. This study illuminates the novel composite electrocatalyst with robust synergy, highlighting the pivotal role of their unique nanostructures in achieving high-efficiency hydrogen production via electrolysis.
