Abstract:5 Statistical tools are discussed for the analysis of data collected from tractor guid6 ance systems. The importance of both accuracy and precision is discussed, and sta7 tistical tools for analysis are considered which incorporate important features of the 8 data. In particular, accuracy is modelled using a generalized least squares model in9 corporating autocorrelation, and precision using a gamma generalized linear model. 10 The methods are applied to data collected during an experiment conducted with a 11 Trimble receiver used with a Beeline tractor guidance system. Three different sce12 narios are considered, then compared: a tractor simulating ploughing a field; the 13 tractor pulling a plough with the receivers on the tractor; the tractor pulling a plough 14 with the Trimble receiver on the plough. The change in the precision and accuracy 15 between the scenarios is discussed. Data was collected over repeated swaths for each 16 scenario. After discussing specific statistical techniques for analysis of this type of 17 data, the collected data are analysed; major conclusions are: the data collected from 18 the Trimble receiver showed evidence of autocorrelation in the offsets; the implement 19 recorded a variance about three times that recorded by the tractor. 20
Simultaneous Interfacial Chemistry and Inner Helmholtz Plane Regulation for Superior Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and durable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts composed of earth-abundant materials is crucial for large-scale electrochemical hydrogen production. Herein, interfacial chemistry engineering is employed to decouple the restriction of both water discharge and hydrogen adsorption free energy. And low valence state Niδ+ (δ < 1) is proposed as an efficient water-dissociation promoter based on our dual-descriptor method. Moreover, metallic and intrinsic HER-active Ni is introduced and a highly conductive edge-enriched Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni hybrid electrocatalyst is constructed. DFT calculations and microkinetics analysis demonstrate that the Ni site and Ni0.2Mo0.8N site have favorable hydroxyl and hydrogen species adsorption energetics, respectively, which can cooperate synergistically towards alkaline hydrogen evolution. The resulting electrocatalyst shows excellent HER electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of about 70 mV at 300 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 33 mV dec−1. It also offers outstanding operational stability at large current densities up to 200 mA cm−2. Further theoretical calculations suggest a tip-enhanced-like local electric field around the topmost Ni nanoparticles, leading to increased K-ion concentration in the inner Helmholtz plane. The HER kinetics and surface reactant density can be simultaneously improved by this hierarchical Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni electrocatalyst. This study might open up new avenues of reasonable design of hierarchical structures for superior electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The development of low-cost, high-performance electrocatalysts for hydrogen precipitation reactions is the key to solving the energy crisis. Metal organic framework (MOFs) with metal centers and organic ligands are one of the ideal materials for the preparation of non-precious metal carbon-based HER electrocatalysts. In this work, a series of transition metal-doped nano-superstructures carbon-based materials NiMC (M=Fe, Co, Cu) were designed and prepared by introducing different transition metal atoms using Ni-MOF as precursors. And the effect of transition metal doping on the electrocatalytic hydrogen precipitation performance of Ni-MOF has been systematically investigated. Nitrogen adsorption tests have shown that the NiFeC catalyst has the highest specific surface area. The overpotential was only 69 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm -2 in an alkaline electrolyte and exhibited excellent stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the electronic interactions between Fe and Ni are tuned after Fe atom doping, which optimizes the hydrogen adsorption energy leading to the excellent HER catalytic performance of NiFeC.

Abstract:The rational design and synthesis of a highly efficient and cost-effective electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are of great importance for the efficient generation of sustainable energy. Herein, amorphous/crystalline heterophase Ni-Mo-O/Cu (denoted as a/c Ni-Mo-O/Cu) was synthesized by a one-pot electrodeposition method. Thanks to the introduction of metallic Cu and the formation of amorphous Ni-Mo-O, the prepared electrocatalyst exhibits favorable conductivity and abundant active sites, which are favorable to the HER progress. Moreover, the interfaces consisting of Cu and Ni-Mo-O show electron transfers between these components, which might modify the absorption/desorption energy of H atoms, thus accelerating HER activity. As expected, the prepared a/c Ni-Mo-O/Cu possesses excellent HER performance, which affords an ultralow overpotential of 34.8 mV at 10 mA cm-2, comparable to that of 20 wt % Pt/C (35.0 mV), and remarkable stability under alkaline conditions.

Abstract:In the pursuit of advancing the production of H 2 through hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER), the demand for the elaborate design of cost-effective and robust durability electrocatalysts has gained momentum, especially replacement of noble-metal counterparts like Pt. Herein, we introduce a facile one-pot hydrothermal approach to synthesize nickel foam-supported Ni 3 S 2 nanosheet arrays, which integrate with carbon-quantum-dot (CQDs) and Cu, Mo dual-metal doped. With the introduction of CQDs and Cu, Mo dual-metal doped site, the optimal CQDs-Cu-Mo-Ni 3 S 2 @NF exhibits superior HER catalytic activity with a low overpotential of 125 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 and strong durability for 30 h in alkaline medium. The exceptional electrocatalytic performance is ascribed to the synergistic effect of CQDs and Cu, Mo dual-metal site. This synergy encompasses optimization of water molecule adsorption/desorption energetics, elevated electrical conductivity, weakening of the strong S–H bond interaction on the Ni 3 S 2 surface, and providing ample active centers. Furthermore, an in-depth understanding of the electronic structure and adsorption energy during the HER process is probed by density functional theory (DFT) analysis. Our work provides a quintessential paradigm for the rational design of multi-component electrocatalysts for water splitting.

High-efficiency Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution in NiCo-Mo2C Tandem Nanoreactors with Bimetallic Modulation and Crystal Plane Synergy

Abstract:Mo2C, with an electronic structure closely resembling that of Pt, holds significant promise as a catalyst for nonprecious metal-based electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). This study presents the design and synthesis of Ni and Co bimetallic-doped Mo2C (NiCo-Mo2C) tandem nanoreactors, engineered by leveraging the concept of a high-gain transistor cascade amplifier. In NiCo-Mo2C material, each monomer layer on Mo2C rod functions as an individual electrocatalytic nanoreactor, with the rod supporting a tandem configuration of these units. The combined modulation of Ni and Co at NiCo-Mo2C interface increases the electron cloud density around Mo and shifts the d-band center negatively, effectively reducing Mo–H* binding energy. The synergy between NiCo-Mo2C (101) and (002) crystal planes facilitates both water dissociation and H* desorption from Mo sites. This tandem configuration of multicatalytic units achieves enhanced hydrogen evolution, demonstrated by the low overpotential at 10 mA·cm−2 (η10) values of 129 mV and 180 mV and Tafel slopes of 84 mV·dec−1 and 85 mV·dec−1 in 1 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4, respectively. Through bimetallic modulation, crystal plane synergy, and tandem structuring, this work advances a novel approach to optimizing HER kinetics, presenting a valuable strategy for developing highly efficient, nonprecious metal-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline and neutral media is crucial but still a significant challenge due to the sluggish multi-step reaction kinetics involved. The interface formed between two or more components in heterogeneous catalyst plays a critical role for electrocatalysis as it can tune the electron structure to enhance the catalytic performance. Herein, we report that multi-interface engineering of NiS, Ni2P and Ni on Ni foam results in a unique coil-like NiS-Ni2P/Ni hybrid electrocatalyst on Ni foam, which is synthesized through a two-step approach: firstly, electrodeposited Ni microspheres on Ni foam (NF), and followed by partial thermal sulfuration and phosphorization. Owing to the interfaces between NiS, Ni2P and Ni, which function as the electrochemical active sites and are beneficial for dissociative adsorption of water molecules, the resultant NiS-Ni2P/Ni/NF exhibits much superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic activity with a small overpotentials of 53 mV and 115 mV to deliever a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline and neutral medias. Remarkably, NiS-Ni2P/Ni/NF needs lower overpotential than that of Pt/C to achieve a higher current density of 100 mA cm−2. Density functional theory calculations suggested that the real active sites are located at the multi-interface of NiS, Ni2P and Ni, contributing the outstanding electrocatalytic performance. This work not only reports a highly efficient coil-like multi-interfacial NiS-Ni2P/Ni hybrid electrocatalyst on Ni foam for hydrogen production, but also paves a new way for designing other highly efficient electrocatalysts..

Abstract:The concerted catalysis throughout multiple elementary steps is key to impel sluggish hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, NiMo/Mo 2 N/NC(500-R) array is constructed by embedding densely packed NiMo/Mo 2 N heterojunctions into nanorod skeleton of nitrogen-rich derived carbons (NC), then followed by electrochemical surface reconstruction. The great electrochemical surface area of resultant electrocatalyst implies fully-exposed concerted diatomic-ensembles. The ensemble effect of unique heteronanojunction induces charge polarizations between Mo and Ni species, gives pseudocapacitance comparable to supercapacitors, and pumps mass transfers to refresh entire HER process. The exceptional activity is demonstrated by ultra-low overpotentials of 5.8 and 200.6 mV respectively at 10 and 1000 mA cm −2 , the impressive durability is indicated by lasting alkaline HER for 1000 h at 1 A cm −2 . Moreover, the performances in water-alkali electrolyzer outperform most reported catalysts. This work presents valuable insights into concerted catalysis and designing efficient and durable electrocatalysts by ensemble effect from different metal heterojunctions for commercial applications.

Abstract:Developing highly-active and robust electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is extremely desirable for hydrogen production but remains highly challenging. Herein, we reported a rational strategy to fabricate a novel metallic heterostructure composed of defect-rich nickel and amorphous/crystalline molybdenum nitride anchored on a carbon matrix (MoN/) as a superior HER electrocatalyst. Owing to the electronic structural modulation of the interfacial synergy of the defects and phase engineering, the MoN/ exhibits a low HER overpotential of 27 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 73 mV dec −1 in 1.0 M KOH solution, without any distinct attenuation after 180 h of operation. Density functional theory calculation results demonstrate that the interfacial electron transfer leads to a distorted Ni surface incorporation of the MoN phase, achieving the optimal thermoneutral hydrogen adsorption free energies (ΔG *H ) of Mo and Ni active sites. Meanwhile, the amorphous/crystalline structure in the MoN phase exposes more active sites and promotes structural stability. This work provides new insights into designing heterogeneous interfaces of non-noble-metal-based electrocatalysts with superior HER activities.

Abstract:The exploration of economical and highly efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is paramount for the development of sustainable hydrogen economy. Herein, a novel three‐dimensional (3D) hierarchical microflower electrocatalyst comprised of N‐doped carbon‐armored Ni3P/Ni/VN heterogeneous nanoparticles (Ni3P/Ni/VN@NC) is developed by combining a hydrothermal method with in‐situ carbonization‐phosphating strategy. The unique robust hierarchical structure derived from 3D NiV layered double hydroxide (NiV‐LDH) skeleton as precursor provides multidimensional mass and charge transport channels as well as numerous active sites for HER, leading to the improved HER activity. More importantly, the possible electron transfer route of Ni3P→Ni→VN is demonstrated due to the charge pumping capability of VN during interfacial electron intercoupling among the tri‐component, which endows Ni3P/Ni/VN with the favorable absorption of hydrogen‐intermediates and thus upgraded HER kinetics over such heterostructure. The resulting Ni3P/Ni/VN@NC catalyst exhibits extremely low overpotentials of 81 mV and 134 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm‐2 without iR‐compensation in alkaline and acidic media, respectively, and maintains continuous operation for over 90 h. This work enlightens the rational design of hierarchical multi‐component heterostructured catalysts for efficient hydrogen production.

Abstract:A hierarchical heterostructure of MoN@NiFe‐layered double hydroxides (LDH) is developed, with NiFe‐LDH nanosheets supported on MoN nanowire array. The as‐prepared MoN@NiFe‐LDH has a remarkably high activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction, which is comparable to the benchmark Pt/C. The improved activity can be attributed to the metallic character and reduced energy barrier by rationally designing the heterostructure. The slow charge transfer and high energy barrier are the key restrictions of cost‐effective electrocatalysts for hydrogen production. A hierarchical heterostructure of MoN@NiFe‐layered double hydroxides (LDH) is developed, with NiFe‐LDH nanosheets supported on MoN nanowire arrays. The as‐prepared MoN@NiFe‐LDH exhibits a remarkably high performance on hydrogen production in alkaline medium, which is close to the benchmark Pt/C. The theoretical computations indicate that MoN@NiFe‐LDH has a metallic character inherited from MoN, which gives rise to the promoted charge transfer. Furthermore, the adsorption intensity of intermediates on MoN@NiFe‐LDH is optimized and thereby the energy barrier is diminished. This work demonstrates the significance of constructing heterostructure for boosting the charge transfer and reducing the energy barrier, which can shed light on the development of highly efficient and low‐cost electrocatalyst for hydrogen production.

Enhancing Electrocatalytic Activity for Hydrogen Evolution by Strongly Coupled Molybdenum Nitride@Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Porous Nano-Octahedrons

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and affordable noble-metal-free catalysts toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an important step toward the economical production of hydrogen. As a nonprecious-metal catalyst for the HER, molybdenum nitride (MoN) has excellent corrosion resistance and high electrical conductivity, but its catalytic activity is still inadequate. Here we report our findings in dramatically enhancing the HER activity of MoN by creating porous MoN@nitrogen-doped carbon (MoN-NC) nano-octahedrons derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The composite catalyst displays remarkably high catalytic activity, demonstrating a low overpotential of 62 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) (eta(10)), a small Tafel slope of 54 mV dec(-1), and a large exchange current density of 0.778 mA cm(-2) while maintaining good stability. The enhancement in catalytic properties is attributed to the unique nanostructure of the MoN, the high porosity of the electrode, and the synergistic effect between the MoN and the nitrogen doped carbon substrate. The performances are among the best ever reported for nonprecious-metal-based electrocatalysts (comparable to those of a 20% Pt/C commercial catalyst), making the porous MoN-NC nano-octahedrons some of the most active and acid-stable electrocatalysts for the HER
Sulfur occupancy-induced construction of ant-nest-like NiMo/CF(N) electrode for highly efficient hydrogen evolution

Abstract:The microstructure of the electrocatalyst plays a critical role in the reaction efficiency and stability during electrochemical water splitting. Designing an efficient and stable electrocatalyst, further clarifying the synthesis mechanism, is still an important problem to be solved urgently. Inspired by the copper pyrometallurgy theory, an exceptionally active NiMo/CF(N) electrode, consisting of an ant-nest-like copper foam substrate (defined as CF(N)) and deposited NiMo layer, was fabricated for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Our findings expounded the structure construction mechanism and highlighted the pivotal role of the spatial occupancy of sulfur atoms in the construction of the ant-nest-like structure. The NiMo/CF(N) composite, characterized by channels with a 2 μm diameter, showcases strong electronic interactions, increased catalytic active sites, enhanced electron/ion transport, and facilitated gas release during HER. Remarkably, NiMo/CF(N) demonstrates ultralow overpotentials of 21 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH. This electrode also exhibits outstanding durability, maintaining a current density of 200 mA cm-2 for 110 h, attributed to the chemical and structural integrity of its catalytic surface and the excellent mechanical properties of the electrode. This work advances the fundamental understanding of constructing micro/nano-structured electrocatalysts for highly efficient water splitting.
Enhanced Electrocatalytic Activity of Mo-Doped NiFe Layered Double Hydroxide Nanosheet Arrays for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:NiFeMo layered double hydroxide (NiFeMo-LDH) nanosheet array structures in situ grown on Ni foam were rationally designed and fabricated by a convenient and green hydrothermal strategy. The systematic characterization proved that Ni x Fe1Mo1-LDH/NF (x = 4, 6, 8, 10) composites grew on the surface of Ni foam as vertically interlaced LDH nanosheets. The electrochemical results showed that all composites possessed high electrocatalytic activity, and Ni6Fe1Mo1-LDH/NF exhibited the best hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. Furthermore, the nanosheet array structure with the best active metal molar ratio was in situ grown on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) uniformly modified Ni foam (∼210 nm × 20 nm) with an overpotential of 90 mV at 10 cm–2 in an alkaline solution, which was superior to most non-noble metal-based catalysts. Experimental results and density functional theory with the Hubbard U (DFT + U) calculations confirmed that the active site for H adsorption changed from the Fe site to the Mo site after Mo doping in NiFe-LDH, which reduced the water dissociation energy barrier and the subsequent proton adsorption energy barrier and adjusted the electronic structure of Fe and Ni sites, thereby greatly promoting the whole Volmer–Heyrovsky process under alkaline conditions and improving the HER performance. The synergistic coupling of NiFeMo-LDH nanosheets with rGO enhanced conductivity and electrochemical performance. The growth of NiFeMo-LDH on rGO/NF facilitated the formation of bubbles and significantly improved electrochemical stability. The present electronic regulation strategies using metal doping can be extended to synthesize other types of transition metal composite catalysts and used for the development of renewable and friendly energy devices.

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through the urea-assisted electrolysis of water possesses considerable potential to reduce the consumption of energy during hydrogen generation. As a more favorable active site for the urea oxidation reaction (UOR), Ni has the merits of high intrinsic activity, excellent conductivity, and low price. However, achieving the desired activity and stability for single metal Ni remains a great challenge. Selecting appropriate substrates to maximize the activity of Ni while also maintaining its stability may be a feasible strategy. Herein, using N-doped carbon dots (NCDs) as a participant, a hydrophilic electrocatalyst with Ni nanoparticles wrapped in a carbon-dot-derived coating (Ni@NCDs) was fabricated. Benefiting from the encapsulated structure and their benign hydrophilicity, the Ni@NCDs showed an excellent bifunctional catalytic activity for the HER and the UOR. Specifically, an overpotential of only 86 mV is needed to sustain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for the HER in alkaline media and a potential as low as 1.38 V at 10 mA cm −2 is required for the UOR. Furthermore, the coupled HER and UOR system requires a low cell voltage of only 1.47 V at 10 mA cm −2 with outstanding long-term durability, which is much lower than that for standard water electrolysis. This study is expected to provide new opportunities for the application of carbon dots in electrocatalysis.

Abstract:A phosphor and cobalt dual doped copper–nickel alloy electrocatalyst is prepared by one‐step electrodeposition method, which displays outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction performance, owing to the improved conductivity, the increase of available active sites, and the formation of P–O passivation layer. Additionally, the synergistic effect of different dopants reduces the hydrogen desorption free energy. The rational design of highly active and durable non‐noble electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is significantly important but technically challenging. Herein, a phosphor and cobalt dual doped copper–nickel alloy (P, Co–CuNi) electrocatalyst with high–efficient HER performance is prepared by one‐step electrodeposition method and reported for the first time. As a result, P, Co–CuNi only requires an ultralow overpotential of 56 mV to drive the current density of 10 mA cm−2, with remarkable stability for over 360 h, surpassing most previously reported transition metal‐based materials. It is discovered that the P doping can simultaneously increase the electrical conductivity and enhance the corrosion resistance, while the introduction of Co can precisely modulate the sub‐nanosheets morphology to expose more accessible active sites. Moreover, XPS, UPS, and DFT calculations reveal that the synergistic effect of different dopants can achieve the most optimal electronic structure around Cu and Ni, causing a down‐shifted d‐band center, which reduces the hydrogen desorption free energy of the rate‐determining step (H2O + e− + H* → H2 + OH−) and consequently enhances the intrinsic activity. This work provides a new cognition toward the development of excellent activity and stability HER electrocatalysts and spurs future study for other NiCu‐based alloy materials.

Abstract:The insufficient intrinsic activity and electrical conductivity of transition metal-based catalysts still inhibits their practical application. In this work, carbon-coated nano-Ni-armed Mo2N nanosheets (Ni@C-Mo2N) assembled on Ni Foam (NF) by using CDs-NH2 as reaction inducing and welding reagent. In-depth experiments reveal that the functional groups of (CDs) play a decisive role in regulating the phase composition and hierarchical structure of the final hybrid material. As electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the optimized hierarchical Ni@C-Mo2N/NF achieved a very low overpotential of 38 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and outstanding stability of over 60 h, which should from the synergistic interfacial effect among the Ni, Mo2N and graphitic carbon optimized the electronic structure of catalyst with enhanced active sites, and improved electrical conductivity. This work provides novel insights for constructing more hierarchical multicomponent materials with the help of variable functional groups of CDs for further electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Hydrogen is considered to be an energy source with a high potential to replace traditional fuels. Herein, NiMoO4-CuO nanorod arrays are constructed on copper foam (CF) substrate. Synergistic effect between NiMoO4 and CuO can improve the electron transfer rate. Meanwhile, the superhydrophilic and superaerophobic structure of NiMoO4-CuO/CF promotes the diffusion of electrolyte and ensures the rapid release of bubbles. Therefore, only an overpotential of 59 mV is required to achieve the current density of 50 mA.cm(-2). At the current density of 50 mA.cm(-2) for 24 h, the catalytic performance of the electrode has no obvious change, demonstrating that NiMoO4-CuO/CF electrocatalyst has outstanding stability, which provides a new pathway to synthesizing highly efficient HER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The large-scale preparation of non-precious-metal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrodes with remarkable performance was important to the energy crisis. Here, Mo-NiMo/NF (Ni Foam) electrodes were fabricated by homemade high power impulse magnetron sputtering technique with subsequent annealing. The synthesized Mo-NiMo/NF electrodes presented an exceptional electrocatalytic performance with η10 = 71 mV and prominent stability in alkaline aqueous electrolyte for the HER. The experimental data were corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The significant catalytic performance for HER active arose from NiMo alloy and the coupling effect between Mo and NiMo alloy. The lowest value on Gibbs free energy of NiMo was − 0.027 eV, very close to the ideal value zero. The adsorption energy of hydrogen atom from heterojunction between Mo and NiMo was − 1.786 eV, which could facilitate Volmer step to further enhance HER activity. More importantly, this synthesis method reported here was scalable, which could provide a valuable strategy to engineer the electrocatalysts with the aim to improve their catalytic activities.

Abstract:Designing ultrahigh energy density and mass-loading of electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution is highly desirable but remains a great challenge. Herein, a 3D high-rise architectural structure consisting of dense Ni(OH) 2 nanoparticles on CuMoO 4 nanocube heterostructure arrays on Ni foam (Ni(OH) 2 /CuMoO 4 /NF) is developed via a hydrothermal reaction, calcination and electrodeposition method. Benefitting from the optimized electronic configuration, hierarchical high-rise architecture, and large specific surface area and mesoporous, the Ni(OH) 2 /CuMoO 4 /NF exhibits superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity in 1.0 M KOH solution. Ni(OH) 2 /CuMoO 4 /NF only requires low overpotential of 70 mV achieving a current density of 10 mA cm −2 with a low Tafel slope of 80 mV dec −1 , and superior long-term stability toward HER. This work provides a new structural design to high-rise architectural structures for efficient catalytic application.
