Abstract:Today various nano-moieties including nanoparticles, nanocubes, nanosticks, nanoflowers and nanoprimes have been synthesised. It is an interesting challenge to build nanostructures using those nano-moieties as blocks owing to their distinct properties and numerous applications. Herein, we demonstrate a smart way, self-assembling, to arrange nanoparticles and nanocubes into a line, sphere, network, bowl-bottom etc. The obtained anisotropic nanostructures have been employed to enhance the sensor sensitivity and to identify the hot-spot position for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS).

Abstract:The self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles is of great importance in realizing their enormous potentials for broad applications due to the advanced collective properties of nanoparticle ensembles. Various molecular ligands (e.g., small molecules, DNAs, proteins, and polymers) have been used to assist the organization of inorganic nanoparticles into functional structures at different hierarchical levels. Among others, polymers are particularly attractive for use in nanoparticle assembly, because of the complex architectures and rich functionalities of assembled structures enabled by polymers. Polymer-guided assembly of nanoparticles has emerged as a powerful route to fabricate functional materials with desired mechanical, optical, electronic or magnetic properties for a broad range of applications such as sensing, nanomedicine, catalysis, energy storage/conversion, data storage, electronics and photonics. In this review article, we summarize recent advances in the polymer-guided self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles in both bulk thin films and solution, with an emphasis on the role of polymers in the assembly process and functions of resulting nanostructures. Precise control over the location/arrangement, interparticle interaction, and packing of inorganic nanoparticles at various scales are highlighted.
Facile Engineering of Nano- and Microparticles Via Self-Assembly of Homopolymers

Abstract:We report an unprecedented assembling performance of amide-containing, homo-structured poly(N-alkylacrylamide)s, through which they can assemble into discrete spherical particles with size ranging from tens of nanometres to several micrometres. For a specific polymer, a facile control over topology and scale of assembled structures can be accomplished via solvent conditions. Assembling using appropriate solvent gives rise to capsule-like assemblies. The molecular structure of polymers, such as the side chain chemistry and topology display striking impact on the size and morphology of resulting assemblies. These polymers might function as novel model systems for investigating complex functions performed by amide moieties in proteins, while this assembling offers a simple, facile but powerful and cost-effective manufacturing route for nano- or microstructured materials that may find great potential in diverse applications varying from cosmetics, drug delivery, nanomedicine, to biotechnology.

Abstract:Polymer elastomers with reversible shape-changing capability have led to significant development of artificial muscles, functional devices, and soft robots. By contrast, reversible shape transformation of inorganic nanoparticles is notoriously challenging due to their relatively rigid lattice structure. Here, the authors demonstrate the synthesis of shape-changing nanoparticles via an asymmetrical surface functionalization process. Various ligands are investigated, revealing the essential role of steric hindrance from the functional groups. By controlling the unbalanced structural hindrance on the surface, the as-prepared clay nanoparticles can transform their shape in a fast, facile, and reversible manner. In addition, such flexible morphology-controlled mechanism provides a platform for developing self-propelled shape-shifting nanocollectors. Owing to the ion-exchanging capability of clay, these self-propelled nanoswimmers (NS) are able to autonomously adsorb rare earth elements with ultralow concentration, indicating the feasibility of using naturally occurring materials for self-powered nanomachine.
Step-Growth Polymerization of Inorganic Nanoparticles

Abstract:Self-organization of nanoparticles is an efficient strategy for producing nanostructures with complex, hierarchical architectures. The past decade has witnessed great progress in nanoparticle self-assembly, yet the quantitative prediction of the architecture of nanoparticle ensembles and of the kinetics of their formation remains a challenge. We report on the marked similarity between the self-assembly of metal nanoparticles and reaction-controlled step-growth polymerization. The nanoparticles act as multifunctional monomer units, which form reversible, noncovalent bonds at specific bond angles and organize themselves into a colloidal polymer. We show that the kinetics and statistics of step-growth polymerization enable a quantitative prediction of the architecture of linear, branched, and cyclic self-assembled nanostructures; their aggregation numbers and size distribution; and the formation of structural isomers.

Abstract:Two kinds of large-area ordered and highly tunable micro/submicro-nanopatterned surfaces in a complementary manner were successfully fabricated by elaborately combining block copolymer self-assembly and colloidal lithography. Employing a monolayer of polystyrene (PS) colloidal spheres assembled on top as etching mask, polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) or polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) micelle films were patterned into micro/submicro patches by plasma etching, which could be further transferred into micropatterned metal nanoarrays by subsequent metal precursor loading and a second plasma etching. On the other hand, micro/submicro-nanopatterns in a complementary manner were generated via preloading a metal precursor in initial micelle films before the assembly of PS colloidal spheres on top. Both kinds of micro/submicro-nanopatterns showed good fidelity at the micro/submicroscale and nanoscale; meanwhile, they could be flexibly tuned by the sample and processing parameters. Significantly, when the PS colloidal sphere size was reduced to 250 nm, a high-resolution submicro-nanostructured surface with 3-5 metal nanoparticles in each patch or a single-nanoparticle interconnected honeycomb network was achieved. Moreover, by applying gold (Au) nanoparticles as anchoring points, micronanopatterned Au arrays can serve as a flexible template to pattern bovine serum albumin (BSA) molecules. This facile and cost-effective approach may provide a novel platform for fabrication of micropatterned nanoarrays with high tunability and controllability, which are promising in the applications of biological and microelectronic fields.

Abstract:Nanoparticle self-assembly has emerged as an indispensable tool in designing structured materials with a wide range of applications, but quantitatively predicting the assembly process and structures still remains challenging. Drawing inspiration from the toolbox of molecular reactions and behaviors is of utmost importance in further advancement of principles and theories for assembling nanoparticles at a length scale orders of magnitude larger. Here we represent a general paradigm for the predictive self-assembly of binary inorganic nanoparticles into linear nanostructures in periodic sequence by expanding the horizon of alternating copolymerization at the molecular level to nanoscale colloidal systems. Nanoparticles grafted with reactive block copolymers are viewed as nanoscale monomers ("nanomers"), and the rapid dimerization of co-nanomers into molecular dipole-like dimers, resembling the preferential formation of dimeric intermediates or charge-transfer complexes from co-monomers in molecular copolymerization, is crucial to the organization of co-nanomers in alternating sequence. We also demonstrate that the classic kinetics and statistics of polycondensation of molecular alternating copolymers (e.g., Nylon-66) can be utilized to quantitatively predict the copolymerization process of nanomers.

Abstract:Current interest in nanoparticle ensembles is motivated by their collective synergetic properties that are distinct from or better than those of individual nanoparticles and their bulk counterparts. These new advanced optical, electronic, magnetic, and catalytic properties can find applications in advanced nanomaterials and functional devices, if control is achieved over nanoparticle organization. Self-assembly offers a cost-efficient approach to produce ensembles of nanoparticles with well-defined and predictable structures. Nanoparticles functionalized with polymer molecules are promising building blocks for self-assembled nanostructures, due to the comparable dimensions of macromolecules and nanoparticles, the ability to synthesize polymers with various compositions, degrees of polymerization, and structures, and the ability of polymers to self-assemble in their own right. Moreover, polymer ligands can endow additional functionalities to nanoparticle assemblies, thus broadening the range of their applications.In this Account, we describe recent progress of our research groups in the development of new strategies for the self-assembly of nanoparticles tethered to macromolecules. At the beginning of our journey, we developed a new approach to patchy nanoparticles and their self-assembly. In a thermodynamically driven strategy, we used poor solvency conditions to induce homopolymer surface segregation in pinned micelles (patches). Patchy nanoparticles underwent self-assembly in a well-defined and controlled manner. Following this work, we overcame the limitation of low yield of the generation of patchy nanoparticles, by using block copolymer ligands. For block copolymer-capped nanoparticles, patch formation and self-assembly were "staged" by using distinct stimuli for each process. We expanded this work to the generation of patchy nanoparticles via dynamic exchange of block copolymer molecules between the nanoparticle surface and micelles in the solution. The scope of our work was further extended to a series of strategies that utilized the change in the configuration of block copolymer ligands during nanoparticle interactions. To this end, we explored the amphiphilicity of block copolymer-tethered nanoparticles and complementary interactions between reactive block copolymer ligands. Both approaches enabled exquisite control over directional and self-limiting self-assembly of complex hierarchical nanostructures. Next, we focused on the self-assembly of chiral nanostructures. To enable this goal, we attached chiral molecules to the surface of nanoparticles and organized these hybrid building blocks in ensembles with excellent chiroptical properties. In summary, our work enables surface engineering of polymer-capped nanoparticles and their controllable and predictable self-assembly. Future research in the field of nanoparticle self-assembly will include the development of effective characterization techniques, the synthesis of new functional polymers, and the development of environmentally responsive self-assembly of polymer-capped nanoparticles for the fabrication of nanomaterials with tailored functionalities.

Recent Advances in Polymer Directed Crystal Growth and Mediated Self- Assembly of Nanoparticles

Abstract:The complex morphology and structures of biomaterials in biological systems have attracted chemists and material scientists to understand self-assembly mechanisms of their emergence. The growth of biomaterials is strongly influenced by soluble biopolymer, low mass organic molecules in solution, and insoluble tissue around crystals. Mimicking the nature, various polymers with different functionalities and their combinations of these functionalities have been designed or adopted in order to control the morphology and complexity of inorganic crystals. In addition, natural polymers or modified functional polymers with specific functional groups have also been used for such mimicking process.In this review, the latest development of synthetic/natural polymer directed crystal growth and mediated self-assembly of nanoparticles will be overviewed. Soluble polymers including biopolymers and synthetic polymers as soft templates have shown remarkable effects on the directed crystal growth and controlled self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles. The flexible combinations of these soluble polymers with other additives or reaction systems make it possible for access of various inorganic materials with complex form, taking advantages of the synergistic effects of polymer with other low mass organic molecules or reaction environments. In contrast. insoluble polymers with different functionalities can be used as hard templates or substrates to offer suitable crystallization sites for the guided crystallization and self-assembly processes. Recent advances have demonstrated that polymer directed crystal growth and mediated self-assembly of nanoparticles can provide promising ways for rational design of various ordered inorganic and inorganic-organic hybrid materials with complexity and structural speciality.
A Facile Method of Forming Nanoscale Patterns on Poly(ethylene Glycol)-Based Surfaces by Self-Assembly of Randomly Grafted Block Copolymer Brushes.

Abstract:Poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate) (POEGMA) block poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes were synthesized on the silicon wafer surfaces by the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. Atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry, and water contact angle methods were employed to study the surface morphology and stimulus-response behavior. It was found that simple solvent treatments could induce phase segregation of the POEGMA and PMMA segments thus introducing nanoscale patterns. The feature size could be less than 10 nm and was tunable on the nanoscale. Various patterns including spherical aggregates, wormlike aggregates, stripe patterns, perforated layers, and complete overlayers were obtained through adjusting the upper block layer thickness. These patterns could switch between the different morphologies reversibly after the treatment with selective solvents.

Abstract:We report a versatile approach for the engineering of functional polymer nanoparticles (NPs) with tunable sizes, stiffness, and responsiveness via templating zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) NPs. This method is applicable to various components ranging from synthetic polymers to biomacromolecules, which are preloaded in ZIF-8 NPs and simultaneously cross-linked during the removal of the templates under mild conditions. Different cross-linking strategies (i.e., thiol-disulfide exchange, click chemistry, amidation reaction, and Schiff base reaction) are feasible for the formation of polymer networks. The advantages of the reported method rely on the simple assembly process, versatility of polymer components, and good control over physicochemical properties of polymer NPs. The versatile assembly strategy together with the tunable functions makes the polymer NPs promising for therapeutic delivery.

Spatial patterning of colloidal nanoparticle-based thin film by a combinative technique of layer-by-layer self-assembly and lithography

Abstract:A novel approach to generating clear patterns of different types of nanoparticles is presented in this paper. Nanoassembly in the vertical direction was combined with planar micropatterning. This provides industrial applications of a popular layer-by-layer method to produce multilayers of polymers, nanoparticles, and proteins organized on the nanometer scale. A thin film of organic polystyrene spheres was first coated on the pretreated silicon wafer with layer-by-layer self-assembly. Then a layer of aluminium was deposited on the thin film. A layer of positive photoresist was spun on the surface of aluminum and then illuminated with UV light. The exposed parts of the resist were removed and windows were opened above the aluminum. The subsequent etching removed exposed aluminium and left a polystyrene thin film in the open windows. Oxygen plasma was employed to remove the polystyrene thin film on the bottom. Eventually, aluminum and photoresist were removed and only the desired pattern remained. This approach was also employed for the patterning of the silica nanoparticle thin film, a widely used material in various applications. In this case, wet etching was demonstrated to etch silica particles. A scanning electron microscope was used to produce the image of the pattern.

Abstract:Patchy nanoparticles (PNPs) possess anisotropic surfaces that produce emergent directionalities in interactions. Manipulation of such surface complexities offers a powerful handle for control over interparticle spatial and orientational orderings, making PNPs an ideal class of nanoscale synthons for self-assembly. However, realization of PNPs with defined patch positions and geometries faces technical challenges related to the level of precision chemistry required to achieve the desired surface patterning. Here, we provide an in-depth review of state-of-the-art strategies available for PNP synthesis. We examine the experimental efforts made to synthesize PNPs, classifying advances based on different material types spanning organic and inorganic systems. We conclude by presenting barriers in PNP synthesis and highlighting ongoing theoretical efforts aimed at guiding experimental design and parameter selection for creating novel surface patterning on NPs.

Abstract:Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has become widely recognized as a robust and efficient route to produce nanostructured systems toward functionally superior materials. Herein, by combining mesoscale simulations and micromechanical modeling, we report the structural control over the interfacial organization and the resulted micro mechanical behaviors of novel nanocomposites designed based on the PISA of initiator-modified Janus nanoparticles in diblock copolymers. Our simulations demonstrate that the off center distribution of these functionalized Janus nanoparticles with respect to phase interface can be precisely regulated by tuning the reaction kinetics and the concentration of monomers dispersed in polymer microdomains. Theoretical calculation reveals that such polymerization-induced interfacial self assembly of Janus nanoparticles is fundamentally attributed to a unique entropy effect mediated by the reaction. The diffusion dynamics of monomers in the entanglement mesh of the diblock copolymers is also examined to evaluate the efficiency of the structural control governed by polymerization in the polymer matrix. Furthermore, the combination of techniques allows us to determine how the interfacial polymerization of Janus nanoparticles influences the micromechanical behaviors, such as the elastic fields, modulus, and failure, fracture behaviors of the nanocomposites. The findings have a bearing on enriching our understanding on the thermodynamic nature of polymer nanocomposites and suggest design guidelines for creating block copolymer-based functional materials of programmable interfacial nanostructures correlated with controlled mechanical performance.

Abstract:Nanoparticles form long-range micropatterns via self-assembly or directed self-assembly with superior mechanical, electrical, optical, magnetic, chemical, and other functional properties for broad applications, such as structural supports, thermal exchangers, optoelectronics, microelectronics, and robotics. The precisely defined particle assembly at the nanoscale with simultaneously scalable patterning at the microscale is indispensable for enabling functionality and improving the performance of devices. This article provides a comprehensive review of nanoparticle assembly formed primarily via the balance of forces at the nanoscale (e.g., van der Waals, colloidal, capillary, convection, and chemical forces) and nanoparticle-template interactions (e.g., physical confinement, chemical functionalization, additive layer-upon-layer). The review commences with a general overview of nanoparticle self-assembly, with the state-of-the-art literature review and motivation. It subsequently reviews the recent progress in nanoparticle assembly without the presence of surface templates. Manufacturing techniques for surface template fabrication and their influence on nanoparticle assembly efficiency and effectiveness are then explored. The primary focus is the spatial organization and orientational preference of nanoparticles on non-templated and pre-templated surfaces in a controlled manner. Moreover, the article discusses broad applications of micropatterned surfaces, encompassing various fields. Finally, the review concludes with a summary of manufacturing methods, their limitations, and future trends in nanoparticle assembly.

Abstract:We present a template-free method for "polymerizing" nanoparticles into long chains without side branches. A variety of nanoparticles are encapsulated in polystyrene-block-poly(acrylic acid) (PSPAA) shells and then used as monomers for their self-assembly. Spherical PSPAA micelles upon acid treatment are known to assemble into cylindrical micelles. Exploiting this tendency, the core-shell nanoparticles are induced to aggregate, coalesce, and then transform into long chains. When more than one type of nanoparticles are used, random and block "copolymers" of nanoparticles can be obtained. Detailed procedures are reported for the PSPAA encapsulation of nanoparticles, homo- and co-polymerization of the core-shell nanoparticles, separation and purification of the resulting nanoparticle chains. Transformations of single-line chains into double- and triple-line chains are also presented. The synergy between the polymer shell and the embedded nanoparticles leads to an unusual chain-growth polymerization mode, giving long nanoparticle chains that are distinct from the products of the traditional step-growth aggregation process.

Abstract:The ability to fabricate micro/nanostructures by non-conventional method is essential in the future development of functional devices.In this respect, polymers are potentially ideal micro/nanoscale building blocks because of their natural length scale, well-defined architecture, controlled synthesis, ease of processing and wide range of chemical functionality.In this paper, we have presented several patterning methods in the use of homopolymers, block copolymers and their blends to pattern polymer surfaces at different length scales.All these methods use templates or external field as the patterning-driven-force and achieve the purpose well.

Abstract:Bottom-up self-assembly of high-density block-copolymer nanopatterns is of significant interest for a range of technologies, including memory storage and low-cost lithography for on-chip applications. The intrinsic or native spacing of a given block copolymer is dependent upon its size (N, degree of polymerization), composition, and the conditions of self-assembly. Polystyrene-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PS-b-PDMS) block copolymers, which are well-established for the production of strongly segregated single-layer hexagonal nanopatterns of silica dots, can be layered sequentially to produce density-doubled and -tripled nanopatterns. The center-to-center spacing and diameter of the resulting silica dots are critical with respect to the resulting double- and triple-layer assemblies because dot overlap reduces the quality of the resulting pattern. The addition of polystyrene (PS) homopolymer to PS-b-PDMS reduces the size of the resulting silica dots but leads to increased disorder at higher concentrations. The quality of these density-multiplied patterns can be calculated and predicted using parameters easily derived from SEM micrographs of corresponding single and multilayer patterns; simple geometric considerations underlie the degree of overlap of dots and layer-to-layer registration, two important factors for regular ordered patterns, and clearly defined dot borders. Because the higher-molecular-weight block copolymers tend to yield more regular patterns than smaller block copolymers, as defined by order and dot circularity, this sequential patterning approach may provide a route toward harnessing these materials, thus surpassing their native feature density.

Hybrid Patterns from Directed Self-Assembly of Diblock Copolymers by Chemical Patterns.

Abstract:The surface affinity is a critical factor for controlling the formation of monolayer nanostructures in block copolymer thin films. In general, strong surface affinity tends to induce the formation of domains with low spontaneous curvature. Abiding by this principle, we propose a facile chemoepitaxial scheme for producing large-scale ordered hybrid patterns by the directed self-assembly of diblock copolymers. The guiding chemical pattern is designed as periodic stripes with alternately changing surface affinities. As a consequence, two different geometries of domains are formed on the stripes with different affinities. The self-assembly process of block copolymers guided by the stripe patterns is investigated using cell dynamics simulations based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, and the kinetic stability diagram is estimated. Hybrid patterns are successfully achieved with both cylinder-forming and sphere-forming diblock copolymers. In the cylinder-forming system, the major hybrid pattern exhibiting a considerable stability window is composed of parallel cylinders and perforated lamellae, while it is composed of monolayer spheres and parallel cylinders in the other system. Encouragingly, the chemoepitaxial method is valid till the period of the guiding pattern is a large multiple of the domain spacing. The chemoepitaxial scheme demonstrated in this work serves as a nice supplement to the graphoepitaxial one proposed in our previous work.
