Abstract:In this paper, we establish a structure theorem for connected graded Hopf algebras over a field of characteristic 0 by claiming the existence of a family of homogeneous generators and a total order on the index set that satisfy some desirable conditions. The approach to the structure theorem is constructive, based on the combinatorial properties of Lyndon words and the standard bracketing on words. As a surprising consequence of the structure theorem, we show that connected graded Hopf algebras of finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension over a field of characteristic 0 are all iterated Hopf Ore extensions of the base field. In addition, some keystone facts of connected Hopf algebras over a field of characteristic 0 are observed as corollaries of the structure theorem, without the assumptions of having finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension (or affineness) on Hopf algebras or of that the base field is algebraically closed.

Abstract:Let A be a bi-Koszul algebra. We describe all possible A∞-algebra structures on the Ext-algebra E(A) and prove that E(A) must be [m2,m3]-finitely generated. We give an equivalent description of the condition for a connected graded algebra to be a bi-Koszul algebra in the language of A∞-algebras. We discuss decomposition in the case that E(A) is endowed with minimal number of multiplications.

Abstract:We study left braces satisfying special conditions, or identities. We are particularly interested in the impact of conditions like Raut and lri on the properties of the left brace and its associated solution of the Yang–Baxter equation (YBE). We show that the solution ( G , r G ) of the YBE associated to the structure group G = G ( X , r ) (with the natural structure of a left brace) of a nontrivial solution ( X , r ) of the YBE has multipermutation level 2 if and only if G satisfies lri. It is known that every (left) brace with lri satisfies condition Raut. We prove that for a graded Jacobson radical ring with no elements of additive order two the conditions lri and Raut are equivalent. We construct a finite two-sided brace with condition Raut which does not satisfy lri. We show that a finitely generated two-sided brace which satisfies lri has a finite multipermutation level which is bounded by the number of its generators.

Abstract:Braces are generalizations of radical rings, introduced by Rump to study involutive non-degenerate set-theoretical solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation (YBE). Skew braces were also recently introduced as a tool to study not necessarily involutive solutions. Roughly speaking, skew braces provide group-theoretical and ring-theoretical methods to understand solutions of the YBE. It turns out that skew braces appear in many different contexts, such as near-rings, matched pairs of groups, triply factorized groups, bijective 1-cocycles and Hopf-Galois extensions. These connections and some of their consequences are explored in this paper. We produce several new families of solutions related in many different ways with rings, near-rings and groups. We also study the solutions of the YBE that skew braces naturally produce. We prove, for example, that the order of the canonical solution associated with a finite skew brace is even: it is two times the exponent of the additive group modulo its center.

Abstract:A left brace is a triple $(\mathcal{B},+,\cdot)$, where $(\mathcal{B},+)$ is an abelian group, $(\mathcal{B},\cdot)$ is a group, and there is a left-distributivity-like axiom that relates between the two operations in $\mathcal{B}$. In analogy with a left brace, we define a left $\mathscr{M}$-brace to be a triple $(\mathcal{B},+,\cdot)$, where $(\mathcal{B},+)$ is a commutative monoid, $(\mathcal{B},\cdot)$ is a monoid, and the axiom of left distributivity holds. A lcm-monoid $M$ is a left-cancellative monoid such that $1$ is the unique invertible element in $M$, and every pair of elements in $M$ admit a lcm with respect to left-divisibility. The class of lcm-monoids contains the Gaussian, quasi-Garside and Garside monoids. We show that every lcm-monoid induces a left $\mathscr{M}$-brace. Furthermore, we show that every Gaussian group induces a partial left brace.

On Engel groups, nilpotent groups, rings, braces and the Yang-Baxter equation

Abstract:It is shown that over an arbitrary field there exists a nil algebra $R$ whose adjoint group $R^{o}$ is not an Engel group. This answers a question by Amberg and Sysak from 1997 [5] and answers related questions from [3, 44]. The case of an uncountable field also answers a recent question by Zelmanov. In [38], Rump introduced braces and radical chains $A^{n+1}=A\cdot A^{n}$ and $A^{(n+1)}=A^{(n)}\cdot A$ of a brace $A$. We show that the adjoint group $A^{o}$ of a finite right brace is a nilpotent group if and only if $A^{(n)}=0$ for some $n$. We also show that the adjoint group of $A^{o}$ of a finite left brace $A$ is a nilpotent group if and only if $A^{n}=0$ for some $n$. Moreover, if $A^{o}$ is a nilpotent group then $A$ is the direct sum of braces whose cardinatities are powers of prime numbers. Notice that $A^{o}$ is sometimes called the multiplicative group of a brace $A$ (for example in [13]). We also introduce a chain of ideals $A^{[n]}$ of a left brace $A$ and then use it to investigate braces which satisfy $A^{n}=0$ and $A^{(m)}=0$ for some $m, n$ (Theorems 2, 3). In Section 2 we describe connections between our results and braided groups and the Yang-Baxter equation. It is worth noticing that by a result by Gateva-Ivanova [17] braces are in one-to-one correspondence with braided groups with involutive braided operators.

Abstract:McCuaig (2001, Brace Generation, J. Graph Theory 38: 124-169) proved a generation theorem for braces, and used it as the principal induction tool to obtain a structural characterization of Pfaffian braces (2004, P{ó}lya's Permanent Problem, Electronic J. Combinatorics 11: R79). A brace is minimal if deleting any edge results in a graph that is not a brace. From McCuaig's brace generation theorem, we derive our main theorem that may be viewed as an induction tool for minimal braces. As an application, we prove that a minimal brace of order $2n$ has size at most $5n-10$, when $n \geq 6$, and we provide a complete characterization of minimal braces that meet this upper bound. A similar work has already been done in the context of minimal bricks by Norine and Thomas (2006, Minimal Bricks, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 96: 505-513) wherein they deduce the main result from the brick generation theorem due to the same authors (2007, Generating Bricks, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 97: 769-817).

Abstract:Over a field of characteristic zero, we prove that the Freiheitssatz holds for brace algebras, the word problem for the brace algebras with a single defining relation is decidable, two generated subalgebras of free brace algebras are free, and that automorphisms of two generated free brace algebras are tame.

Abstract:It is proven that a matched pair of actions on a Hopf algebra $H$ is equivalent to the datum of a Yetter-Drinfeld brace, which is a novel structure generalising Hopf braces. This improves a theorem by Angiono, Galindo and Vendramin, originally stated for cocommutative Hopf braces. These Yetter-Drinfeld braces produce Hopf algebras in the category of Yetter-Drinfeld modules over $H$, through an operation that generalises Majid's transmutation. A characterisation of Yetter-Drinfeld braces via 1-cocycles, in analogy to the one for Hopf braces, is given. Every coquasitriangular Hopf algebra $H$ will be seen to yield a Yetter-Drinfeld brace, where the additional structure on $H$ is given by the transmutation. We compute explicit examples of Yetter-Drinfeld braces on the Sweedler's Hopf algebra, on the algebras $E(n)$, on $\mathrm{SL}_{q}(2)$, and an example in the class of Suzuki algebras.

On a family of simple skew braces

Abstract:Several constructions have been given for families of simple braces, but few examples are known of simple skew braces which are not braces. In this paper, we exhibit the first example of an infinite family of simple skew braces which are not braces and which do not arise from nonabelian simple groups. More precisely, we show that, for any primes $p$, $q$ such that $q$ divides ${(p^p-1)}/{(p-1)}$, there are exactly two simple skew braces (up to isomorphism) of order $p^p q$.

Abstract:In this paper we determine all the Hopf q-brace structures on rank one pointed Hopf algebras and compute the socle of each one of them. We also identify which among them are Hopf skew-braces. Then we determine when two Hopf q-brace structures on rank one pointed Hopf algebras are isomorphic, and, finally, we compute all the weak braiding operators on these Hopf algebras.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a nonabelian group. We show how a collection of compatible endomorphisms $\psi_i:G\to G$ such that $\psi_i([G,G])\le Z(G)$ for all $i$ allows us to construct a family of bi-skew braces called a brace block. We relate this construction to other brace block constructions and interpret our results in terms of Hopf-Galois structures on Galois extensions. We give special consideration to the case where $G$ is of nilpotency class two, and we provide several examples, including finding the maximal brace block containing the group of quaternions.

Abstract:L. N. Childs defined a bi-skew brace to be a skew brace such that if we swap the role of the two operations, then we find again a skew brace. In this paper, we give a systematic analysis of bi-skew braces. We study nilpotency and solubility, and connections between bi-skew braces and set-theoretic solutions of the Yang–Baxter equation. Further, we deal with Byott's conjecture in the case of bi-skew braces, and we use bi-skew braces as a tool to solve a classification problem proposed by L. Vendramin. In the final part, we investigate brace blocks, defined by A. Koch to be families of group operations on a given set such that any two of them yield a bi-skew brace. We provide a characterisation of brace blocks, illustrate how all known constructions in literature follow in a natural way from our characterisation, and give several new examples.

Abstract:Braces were introduced by Rump as a promising tool in the study of the set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. It has been recently proved that, given a left brace $B$, one can construct explicitly all the non-degenerate involutive set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation such that the associated permutation group is isomorphic, as a left brace, to $B$. It is hence of fundamental importance to describe all simple objects in the class of finite left braces. In this paper we focus on the matched product decompositions of an arbitrary finite left brace. This is used to construct new families of finite simple left braces.

Abstract:We translate the main result of author's <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1309.7744" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1309.7744">arXiv:1309.7744</a> to the language of formal geometry. In this new setting we prove directly that the Koszul resp. Borjeson braces are pullbacks of linear vector fields over the formal automorphism exp(a) -1 in the Koszul, resp. a/(1-a) in the Borjeson case. We then argue that both braces are versions of the same object, once materialized in the world of formal commutative geometry, once in the non-commutative one.

Specifically, a weak (left) brace is a non-empty set S endowed with two binary operations $$+$$ + and $$\circ $$ ∘ such that both $$(S,+)$$ ( S , + ) and $$(S, \circ )$$ ( S , ∘ ) are inverse semigroups and $$\begin{aligned} a \circ \left( b+c\right) = \left( a\circ b\right) - a + \left( a\circ c\right) \qquad \text {and} \qquad a\circ a^- = - a + a \end{aligned}$$ a ∘ b + c = a ∘ b - a + a ∘ c and a ∘ a - = - a + a hold, for all $$a,b,c \in S$$ a , b , c ∈ S , where $$-a$$ - a and $$a^-$$ a - are the inverses of a with respect to $$+$$ + and $$\circ $$ ∘ , respectively. In particular, such structures include that of skew braces and form a subclass of inverse semi-braces. Any solution r associated to an arbitrary weak brace S has a behavior close to bijectivity, namely r is a completely regular element in the full transformation semigroup on $$S\times S$$ S × S . In addition, we provide some methods to construct weak braces.

Abstract:This paper introduces Hopf braces, a new algebraic structure related to the Yang-Baxter equation which include Rump's braces and their non-commutative generalizations as particular cases. Several results of classical braces are still valid in our context. Furthermore, Hopf braces provide the right setting for considering left symmetric algebras as Lie-theoretical analogs of braces.

Abstract:Left braces, introduced by Rump, have turned out to provide an important tool in the study of set theoretic solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation. In particular, they have allowed to construct several new families of solutions. A left brace $(B,+,\cdot )$ is a structure determined by two group structures on a set $B$: an abelian group $(B,+)$ and a group $(B,\cdot)$, satisfying certain compatibility conditions. The main result of this paper shows that every finite abelian group $A$ is a subgroup of the additive group of a finite simple left brace $B$ with metabelian multiplicative group with abelian Sylow subgroups. This result complements earlier unexpected results of the authors on an abundance of finite simple left braces.
