Abstract:McCuaig (2001, Brace Generation, J. Graph Theory 38: 124-169) proved a generation theorem for braces, and used it as the principal induction tool to obtain a structural characterization of Pfaffian braces (2004, P{ó}lya's Permanent Problem, Electronic J. Combinatorics 11: R79). A brace is minimal if deleting any edge results in a graph that is not a brace. From McCuaig's brace generation theorem, we derive our main theorem that may be viewed as an induction tool for minimal braces. As an application, we prove that a minimal brace of order $2n$ has size at most $5n-10$, when $n \geq 6$, and we provide a complete characterization of minimal braces that meet this upper bound. A similar work has already been done in the context of minimal bricks by Norine and Thomas (2006, Minimal Bricks, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 96: 505-513) wherein they deduce the main result from the brick generation theorem due to the same authors (2007, Generating Bricks, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 97: 769-817).

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the **structure and properties of minimal braces**. Specifically, the goals of the paper are: 1. **Derive an inductive tool**: Based on McCuaig's brace - generating theorem, derive a main theorem for minimal braces as an inductive tool for studying minimal braces. 2. **Prove the upper bound on the size of minimal braces**: Prove that for any minimal brace \(G\) of order \(2n\), its number of edges \(m_G\) does not exceed \(5n - 10\) when \(n\geq6\). 3. **Fully characterize the minimal braces that reach the upper bound**: Provide a complete classification, describing which minimal braces can reach the above - mentioned upper bound. ### Paper Background - **Brace**: A brace refers to a bipartite matching - covered graph that is no longer a brace after deleting any edge. - **Minimal brace**: If after deleting any edge, the graph is no longer a brace, then the graph is called a minimal brace. - **McCuaig's generating theorem**: This theorem provides a method for generating simple braces and is used as an inductive tool for structural characteristics. ### Main Contributions - **Main theorem**: By using McCuaig's generating theorem, the paper derives an inductive tool for minimal braces. - **Upper bound on size**: It is proved that for any minimal brace \(G\) of order \(2n\), its number of edges \(m_G\) does not exceed \(5n - 10\) when \(n\geq6\). - **Classification result**: A complete classification of minimal braces that reach the above - mentioned upper bound is provided. ### Methods and Results - **Inductive tool**: By defining a "minimality - preserving pair", that is, a pair of an edge \(e\) and an edge set \(F\) such that the graph obtained after deleting these edges is still a minimal brace. - **Extension operations**: Three extension operations (index zero, index one, index two) are defined, and these operations can be used to generate new braces. - **Key lemma**: Through a series of lemmas, the structural characteristics of minimal braces are proved, especially the properties regarding superfluous edges. ### Conclusion By systematically studying the structure and properties of minimal braces, the paper not only provides a powerful inductive tool, but also gives the upper bound on the size of minimal braces and their classification, providing an important theoretical basis for follow - up research.
